  1. For the most part, at anything above idle, my stock voltage gauge reads 14ish. Lately, it's been getting up there but it seemed a bit random. Tonight, I checked the wires leading to the R/R and man...did I ever get there just in time. One of the wires from the 3 prong plug had gotten so hot, it not only melted the plug, it heated up the connector enough to slide out of the crimp. One slight tug and it came completely free. I have been going over my bike and re-seating and greasing plugs as I come to them...I was planning on doing this anyway but damn...there was some serious puckering happening when I saw that bare wire. I pulled all the connectors out of the burned and melted plug, cleaned them up and plugged the wires together, without the plug, and insulating them. A quick startup showed the volts at around 14...right off of idle and steady as a rock no matter the load. Moral of the story; check those plugs. If you catch them in time, you may save yourself the time and effort of getting stranded and buying a new R/R.
  2. :Happy Birthday: :Happy Birthday: Hope you have a great day today. I'd say you should get a ride in but I'm not sure if the snow and ice have melted down there yet. Just remember spring will be here sometime. Margaret & Jeff
  3. I found the problem with the headlight. It is the start button............ Wanted to see if anyone here had one to sell before i look at e-bay........ My starter button has melted around the contacts, never saw that before.
  4. I pulled up to my local auto parts store at about 7:00 this evening to pick up some spark plugs for my RSV and I parked next to a young guy and his Vstrom. He had the seat off and was starting to take the plastic off. We exchanged hello's and commented that he hoped I didn't have his problem. A short in the electrical system due to melted insulation on several wires that had made contact with head. As I walked away to go in and get my spark plugs I noticed that he was from out of state with an Arkansas plate. When I came out I asked what I could do to help. While Riley (the owner) had fortunately found the short it was in one of those places that you could see but couldn't reach into. Neither he nor I had ever worked on a Vstrom. After I had assured him that I would not leave him stranded we spent the next 2 hours in the parking lot stripping the bike down by taking off the fairing and tank in order to get access to the wires. The store personnel were great in that they let him borrow tools from the shelf. We managed to get enough slack in the wire bundle and separate the melted wires in order to wrap them with tape. While we worked we got to know each other a bit and I found that he is a photographer who shoots weddings. So do I, or I did. So we were able to talk photography as well. Just as dark fell we had the bike back together and running well. He had another 40 miles to go tonight to make his next stop. He was very appreciative of my help and I enjoyed helping a fellow rider out. Hopefully, I'll get my spark plugs installed tomorrow night. DT
  5. Yes, As you can read on title that is what I thought I bought on E-bay. A 1998 Royal Star 21" Tall Winshield on Excellent Conditions, as listed and as was in the picture showed on E-bay (Yes, the picture of the fiance in Italy. I know that history). The problem: a melt on one side of the size of a tennis ball. A small scrach in the middle but almost not noticeable. So, If I return it I have to pay shipment twice. If I keep it, I'll feel like an idiot. So, anyone know any miracle formula to try to fix the melted. (It seems like to previous owner impact hardly against something that melted it). Apart of it, perfect. Complete hardware, two slides on the shield. Original plates with Logo. Ah, also it fits perfect on the bike. So, I'll appretiate all feeds helping on this. Lawyer please hold until figure out final status. Thanks :sick:
  6. Tuesday evening while riding home from work, the 18 wheeler that was ahead of me was flashing it's brake lights at me. It was not dark yet, so I thought that perhaps my headlight was out and I kept riding. About 5 miles later, I smelled something that smelled like brakes burning and I attributed the smell to the truck that was flashing his brake lights at me. About a mile later, lots of smoke from under the instrument panel. Being between off ramps, I decided that I could make it another 1/2 mile to the next exit, so slowed down and kept going. When I was exiting I-80, the instrument panel burst into some flames. I pulled off the road, shut it off, pulled my stuff out of the trunk, dialed 911 and ran to the nearest house for a bucket of water. By the time I got back there were 3 foot flames. A bucket of water didn't do much. The fire department put it out within about 3 minutes. I had time to pull the fairing today to find about 10 inches of the wiring harness gone. All of the relays are gone, of course the windshield, the clutch hose and switch are burned up. Headlight adjuster knob is oblong shaped. Throttle cable is a bit crispy... ignition switch cover is gone. Both side panels on the fairing are melted. Emergency flasher switch is melted. Right hand mirror inside trim and rubber boot is melted. I have a spare wiring harness and am considering a rebuild. I would need: Clutch hose from lever to hard tube. clutch switch L and R side panel covers R mirror windshield relays emergency flasher switch instrument panel and cover Any idea what that might cost?
