  1. Welcome to F4 Customs Motorcycle Windshields, home of the “Motorcycle Windshield Specialist” and the infamous “Steel Wool Test.” F4 started with founder Don Frank’s dream of flipping the motorcycle industry upside down with products that were a hands down first choice by motorcycle owners. The first product was the F4 Customs windshield. In March of 2005, F4 Customs started daily operations launching the marketing and sales efforts on their new windshields. The company now has many different windscreens available for various models and many more in the design process. Don attributes their success to the help and support of their friends and family along with providing the best possible customer service. 2. I had a real shock today. I have a 2006 RSTD and I do 95% of my riding with no windshield. That was one of the reasons I got it. I like the bare cruiser look most of the time. Today I knew I was going to be doing a straight highway run, so I thought I would put the shield on, and take a nice easy ride. Well, I have put almost 1000 K on the bike in the last 3 days, and just like last year, I was getting about 280 - 300 KM out of a tank. Well, today on my ride I filled up, reset my fuel odometer on my Garmin 550 as usual and reset my low fuel indicator. 170 KM later, my Garmin shows just under half tank, and my fuel gauge on the bike is on low fuel indicator again. This is the worst fuel economy I have had since the bike was new. Now, I was also going faster than my normal rides, where I generally stick to the back roads, and keep it between 80 and 90 KM/H. I had the cruise set at 114 (by garmin, 122 by speedo) my first thought was that the windscreen caused this horrible mileage. I will have to check it again, with the windscreen off. I know that I rode with the windscreen on last year to North bay, which is about 5 hours, and I do not recall the mileage being that bad, but again, most of the highways are 80 KM/h limit, where I do 90ish. Anyone else found this kind of bad mileage with the windscreen?
  3. Was wondering has anyone attempted to make a windshiled out of the same thickness lexan? I have thought about like a Cee Baileys shorter windshield, but I have a sheet of lexan (I think the same thickness as current windscreen) and was wondering if anyone has made thier own. I saw a couple posts somewhere about cutting down the current OEM windscreen.
  4. I have to replace the windshield on my RSTD. I started by looking for a stock windscreen, and all I found was this: STR-1D607-11-00 7” lower than stock, made of tough polycarbonate with Quantum Coating® for superior abrasion resistance and longer life. I couldn't find the stock size at the Yamaha website. I'll admit that the only place I could see the windscreen listed was in accessories. I couldn't find it in the parts section. So I started looking for alternatives. The most popular seems to be the Clearview. Threads here suggest that people are getting the shorter version, with the vent. The recurve is both praised and cursed. Any comments on this, comfort, mpg, passenger buffeting? How does the wider size impact attachments to the handlebars? How about riding in the rain, which I do a lot of? The stock windscreen keeps me nice and dry, but it kills my mpg. Another option is Cee Baileys. Anyone have this?? WHen would you use light green? What else is there to fit the stock RSTD quick connect? How does the smoke windscreen look on a midnight bike? Photo examples? Thanks so much for your experience and opinions! Dave
  5. Several people asked to see pics of the short windscreen I have my Midnight RSV so here they are..
  6. Hello all, OK... It's Sat. and I'm about to start going through my new 1st gen VR (fluids, plugs, elec. system check, etc.) I started looking her over last night and found a few minor concerns, just minor mechanical and cosmetic but am having trouble finding links etc. so I will put my initial queries in this post and see what shakes loose. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give. Mechanically for starters... I noticed the shift shaft (shifter input shaft if you prefer) has got some play, checked a couple other bikes around (not VR's) and they are solid. Is this normal for 81K miles, or is there a fix for this? I know the seal needs replacing, that's no biggie but the play has me worried. Leaking oil a little from top of lft rear cyl. appears to be cam cover gasket and half moon, any little oddities to beware of here? Will there be any problem switching to full synth on the oil change, or any oil change tips from the masters? Second... cosmetics: The windscreen is "peeling"? and kinda yellow, is there a fix or is this a new windscreen? Needs some odds and ends... side vent, reflector, etc. any good places to get these at a reasonable price? Finally... I'm perplexed, I've seen pics of the '86 VR with and w/o a lower fairing piece or "scoop". Is there a good reason why some have them and some don't? If possible... same as trim question, where can a guy find one at a reasonable price? Thanks for reading and indulging an enthusiastic new owner! Look forward to hearing from you all. Kelly
  7. Windscreen is too high...Need a replacement I don't have to look through. Was also concerned about buffeting for my passenger. Any thoughts?
  8. Are there no choice for a V Star 250? All I see is black for a 2010. Kinda seems crappy. Or am I looking at their site wrong? And can a windscreen, saddelbags and backrest be added? Inquiring minds want to know.
  9. I decided a few months ago that I wanted to get the tall OEM windscreen out of my way temporarily and allow the wind to cool me a bit during the summer months. After riding for a few weeks with no windscreen at all, I decided I wanted at least something mounted on the fairing to fill the slot. A secondary thought was to maybe mount a shorty windscreen for appearances sake. Not really having any desire to purchase a brand new full-size windscreen (to cut down), I placed a "part wanted" ad here on the site for one that I could cut down to the size I wanted. A Venture brother in California saw my request and shipped me an old one for the cost of shipping. I received his old one and measured off an 8" rise from bottom to top on the older screen. I overlapped my OEM screen over the replacement and used the upper edge of mine to grease-pencil the upper curve to provide me a cut-line. I cut the excess screen off using a high-speed abrasive cutting disc and a die-grinder, leaving about 1/8" extra outside my grease-pencil line. I then polished that down exactly with another abrasive sanding disc, in the same die-grinder. I then rounded all edges with an air-sander and mounted the freshly re-sized windscreen to my fairing. It looks great and does exactly what I want. Allows enough air to keep me aerated, yet fills the slot and keeps the appearance sharp. Just finished and mounted it yesterday, so I haven't had it out for a major highway ride yet. So not sure if it's low enough to avoid throwing a buffet into the middle of my face, but it can be shortened again if necessary. I'd rather have it too short than too tall. I'll post pics ASAP
  10. Someone had asked me recently for a pic of my shorty windscreen.. and voila.. http://www.eastcoastphotos.com/venture/img_7509a.jpg http://www.eastcoastphotos.com/venture/img_7510a.jpg http://www.eastcoastphotos.com/venture/img_7512a.jpg
  11. Overly concerned at my fuel usage on the highway recently, I installed a short and wide Road Chrome windscreen to replace the Clearview Tall & wide and did comparative testing to see if it really did make a difference or not to go short or tall as far as fuel mileage goes. And here are my results, observed but unscientific.. (speeds noted are actual, not what the speedo reads, 10% difference) The biggest difference observed is at speed and depending on headwinds. It would appear to me that the biggest significant difference is when traveling at 110 km/h (actual speed) and above. At lower speeds, back rural roads and so on, I couldn't see much difference.. But once on the highway, as long as the speeds were in the 100 km/h area, with little headwinds, it would be the same.. the shorter windscreen seems to get a wee bit better mileage.. However, traveling at our 110 km/h posted speed limits on the highway is where the big difference comes in. And if traveling at a slightly higher speed then it's a huge difference. When you add on a 20 to 30 km/h head wind component to this equation, I found that the shorter windscreen made a huge difference.. And it's that 110 km/h speed 'zone' that makes the difference.. Mind you, the tall wide windscreen makes for a more comfortable ride, sitting behind that plexi barn door, but the wind it deflects is also wind that drags down the bike as well. I'm heading out on Wednesday for Maine and possibly New Hampshire for a few days and will be able to tell more on how it works out.. but thus far, seems like the shorter windscreen is the way to go.. When I got caught in a down pour today, I could see over the top of the windscreen without getting soaked.. bonus. The tall and wide would protect me from the rain a little better but depending on conditions would make it scary trying to see through it instead of over it.. It's all about trading off comfort and safety until you have a good balance..
  12. I am currently running with a Show Chrome short wide windscreen. I love it but passenger buffeting is a bit of a drag. So I am looking to buy, trade for, whatever it takes to get an RSV stock or Clearview XL or XXL windscreen. Got to keep the passenger happy. . Pm me or call 636-485-9613. Thanks!
  13. Hi all, I've been offered a High Windscreen for £40 and a Low Windscreen for £25. What I want to know is did the Ventures come as standard with a option for High or Low windscreens? I really want to build the bike back up to as standard as possible so I'd like to get the original.
  14. Hey All, Has any one used the Nuvi 250 on there bike? A couple local box stores have the Nuvi 250 & 250W on sale for the same price ($179) I know it is not a waterproof GPS but figured I may use it on the Venture occasionally. My question is would the 250W be too big for the windscreen? or should I just get the regular Nuvi250? The Garmin Zumo 550 is quite a bit out of my $$ range.

    Gasoline odor

I filled up the tank for the first time, and the gas smell while I was riding was so strong that I pulled over thinking that I had a gas leak. There was nothing. Now 100 miles later the smell is still there, and I have to keep moving my head above the windscreen to get air that does not smell like gas. I called the dealer and they said it was a clogged vent. That was not the case. Has anyone else experienced this?
