Where is the best place to mount a thermometer?
awsmsrv replied to Dave77459's topic in Watering Hole
Great minds think alike, don't they? -
First, nothing wrong with the picture. I'm not the same size as you. If I were to buy a new bicycle (or used, for that matter), I would have to adjust the seat height, handlebars, etc., to make it fit me. If you got on it, it would not fit you. Even if we weigh the same & are the same height, my legs, torso, arms are different lengths compared to yours. If I were to drive your car, same thing: I'd have to adjust the seat, steering column, mirrors, etc., so it would be comfortable for me. You'd hate those changes because it wouldn't fit you. Second, nothing is perfect. Things are generically designed, so it will be reasonably close to what "everyman" likes. Minor, sometimes major, tweaks are always necessary. OK. End of practicality explanation. Hey, it's fun making it our own with what we add, change, remove. Sometimes it's just an experiment. Often it's unnecessary. But, it's mine. I'll do what I want. Doesn't have to suit anyone but me (well, maybe the wife, too). If I think something "improves" the bike, that's all that matters. If you think it detracts from the bike, doesn't matter to me. To each his/her own. Besides, if every RSV, Gold Wing, "whatever bike" were the same as every other, wouldn't it be boring? The differences in the same bike, car, boat, etc., makes things interesting. Applies to people, too. Gives us something to talk/argue about. Without the different things we do & like, everything & everyone would be the same. How depressing would that be?!?! No one needs another "me" out there. (Ask some who know me. ) Anyway, I like to see what others have done to their bikes. Sometimes I'll incorporate others' ideas. Sometimes it gives me a new idea. Sometimes I might even shake my head in disbelief, but, that's OK, too. Yes, it can be annoying when things aren't made the way we think they should be. Still, we don't have to acquire it, or we can move on to something else &... ...LET THE TINKERING BEGIN AGAIN!

My wife just got me (us?) the REI Half Dome 2 for my birthday. $134.99 is hard to beat for a tent this size. Looking forward to using it this summer. Practiced a couple times putting it up. Takes maybe 10 minutes to set it up: footprint, tent, rain fly. Less time if you are fast & don't need the rain fly. Can't wait.

Yep, that's what I do, too. Especially on crowded, signal-controlled freeway entrances. I even do this in the car. I've never understood why people have to be so close to the vehicle in front of them. What if they stalled & you have no room to go around them because the guy behind you did the same thing. You should be far enough behind that you could pull around them without reversing first. On the bike, obviously, you could stay a little closer, but, really no reason. Always be thinking ahead.

Same story here.

Not if you're with it.

The lock set is what has gone bad both times. It becomes harder & harder to get the key to turn. I know it's not the key because it works perfectly on everything else. Maybe what they did the first time was key the new ignition to the old key. The dealer says the had a locksmith come in to do that. This time Yamaha said wouldn't do that. It would cost about $85, so, the cheaper way to go is to double cut a new key. It just really bugs me that they aren't willing to pay for the fix like the first time. My warranty is up at the end of the month, so, they'll never have to do it again anyway. Pretty cheap attitude, IMHO.

I'm about to have my ignition switch replaced again (44K miles). The first time was around half that mileage. The first time Yamaha also paid for redoing the locks on the saddlebags, trunk & helmet locks. This time they'll fix the ignition, but, said they won't do the other part. This really annoys me. They wanted to know how this has happened twice to me, never to anyone else. They think I must carry a wad of keys. I don't. Only the bike key, not even on a key ring. I don't want to carry 2 keys &, yes, I know I can have 1 key cut on one side for the ignition & the other side for the saddlebags, etc. That is what I will most likely do, as it's the cheapest way to solve the problem for me. Regardless, I still think Yamaha should fix the problem at their expense under warranty. I guess I'm looking for advice. Thanks in advance for any insight. I only feel a little better after venting this.

Yeah, kinda what I was sayin'. Just in a lot fewer words (& tongue in cheek, too).

Wrong psi? You like to start like a jack rabbit? Odometer way off? You always skid to a stop? The roads you ride are in awful shape? Buying used tires? Could be a lot of reasons.

No, they don't distract me nor do they blind me at night. In fact, I like that they're easily visible, rather than just the dash indicator.

I'll try to get those up in the next few days. They have 3M tape on the back of them &, Yes, I had to drill holes. I drilled 1/4" holes, fitted appropriately sized rubber grommets into the holes, then ran the wiring through the grommets & tapped into the turn signal wires. I also used male & female terminals to connect inside the fairing with about 2 feet of wire, so, when I split the fairing, I can just easily disconnect them & lay aside the front half of the fairing. They are not sequential. I do have sequentials on my mirrors. To see them click here.

OK. Here's what I just did today for additional turn signals. I added a 1 foot long amber LED strip right next to the fairing "eyebrows". Whadaya think?

Installed my SpeedOhealer
awsmsrv replied to shikano53's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Yep, same here. I keep track of my miles/gallon every fill-up, too, & figure I'm getting about 2 to 3 more miles/gallon than it shows.- 15 replies

Yes, they do.

Mine are actually the V Star halogens that I've got on a relay & a switch on my dash that turns them on & off. They are wired to be on whether on low or high beam. I've also aimed them toward the edges of the road (critters).

Can ya hear me now?

Are you progressing, yet? -
No problem here with FF4 either.
-
I average about 185 miles between fill-ups. I also leave it on reserve all the time. Once the fuel light comes on, I know I can go about another 40. The furthest I ever went was 218. The most gas I ever put in was 5.976 gallons. Can you say, "Fumes"? BTW, I, too, have the speedohealer corrected to -7.5%, so I'm actually going a little further than indicated. I'd rather have my speed accurate than my distance.

Communication systems
awsmsrv replied to viragofan's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
My wife & I use the Scala Rider Q2s. Whether she's on the back of my bike or on her own, we can easily communicate. No wires. All bluetooth. You can buy them as a set already paired. Then you just have to pair them to your phones. I'm sure others will chime in with their solutions, as well. -
Yeah, you know how it goes. Just like taking your car in & saying, "It's making this funny noise", but, the mechanic takes it on the road & hears nothing. You drive it home &, sure enough, it's still making that noise. Must be something like Murphy's Law or something.
