I have read all of the posts for this thread with great interest. However, I never imagined that the comments and info would be useful so quickly. As I mentioned in one of Marcarl's posts, I parked under an overpass today (to put on my rain suit) and thought I had enough angle for the side stand. However, the shoulder was sloped so much that the wind from the first truck that went by blew the bike over --- and I mean right over. Instead of being held up by the front and back crash bars, my fairing bit the dust, and the bike ended up sloped downward on its side due to the sloped shoulder. Even with the proper technique, I am sure I could not have got the bike upright without my wife's help. To make matters worse, that was the first time ever that my VR has been scarred from going over.

I now know how it feels Carl. Today, I stopped under an overpass to put on my rain gear. Unlike you, I did use my side stand and because the shoulder was sloped, I actually paused to make sure there was enough lean for the side stand. There was - until a truck went by and the wind from the truck was enough to cause the bike to go over - and I mean right over until my fairing made contact with the ground. First time my bike has gone over, so it was an emotional event for me. Fortunatley, Anne was with me so with her help, I was able to lift the bike back up and continue my ride in the rain.

Great pictures Steve. Congratulations!

FABULOUS Bob. The good news is that you are now retired. The not so good news is that if you are like most of us retired guys, you will not be able to figure out where all your time goes - or why you are still short of time for the things you would like to do in your retirement. Regardless, sincere wishes for a great retirement!!

A few weeks ago, a friend (unnamed) had his 2nd gen slip out from under him on some slippery wet ground. He called for help to get it upright. We could not do the proper procedure cause of the ground. It was all we could do to lift the bike off the slippery ground

These kind of price differences which don't seem to have much justification sure are frustrating for us Canadians. Similar price differences exist for motorcycle tires.

Nothing like an early morning wake-up Steve! During our Venture West last year, we came across these Grizzlies only a few feet off the Kananaskis Trail, which you can see in the picture. The large one stood up on its haunches and stared at me for a few seconds, before it went back to gorging on berries. Needless to say, I kept the bike in 1st gear with my hand on the clutch, ready for a quick get away. I was pretty sure that our 1st gens are faster than a Grizzle. What I didn't realize until informed by my wife later was that a third Grizzle was even closer to us on the other side of the road.

Guess it could have been worse. Several years ago, I was riding through Smuggler's Notch in Vermont with a guy who was wearing shorts. A bee went up his shorts and stung him where it hurts a guy most. Once he made it over the top of the notch and down into the meadow area, he dropped his bike, ran into the bush and immersed himself in a muddy swamp.

Hope you all had a good ride. We couldn't make it. Left this morning for a week ride heading east. Made it to Ottawa after riding through Prince Edward County and along the Thousand Island Parkway. Great ride so far. May go to Tremblant. Anyone done that ride?

Both of my daughters rode their own motorcycles when they were teenagers - 30 years ago. I had a KZ650 and an Interstate back then.

Rick - I think we all benefit from hearing about your close call which seems like it should never have happened except for bad driving by the trucker. It reminds us all of the need to stayt alert, especially on our bikes. Sure glad you could talk about it.

I was able to buy a Decka here in Ontario but in the end, I ordered it from Bohanan (great guys) and my all cost including shipping was less than buying it here in Ontario.

Bob, it looks like you are getting some good info. While I can't help you there, I would like to wish you well as you go down whatever new road that you decide to take.

Jim, you have certainly come to the right place for info about 1st gen Ventures. I stumbled across this forum when I was thinking of buying an 88 Venture Royale, and the result has been an amazing amount of information as well as assistance and new friends. You will also find an amazing amount of info about the characteristics of the 1st gen Venture in various threads on this forum that are easy to search, including it's weak points (which are few) and what to look for when considering a purchase. What year and model of Guzzi's do you have?

During our VentureWest last year, one of our favorite places to visit and stay overnight was Dancing Bears Inn in East Glacier Park which was a great location for doing the Road to the Sun. Ask the Dancing Bears people if the cabin that they also own and rent out is available. It's one of the nicest cabin I have ever stayed in and it will handle all of you.
