  1. Im seriously thinking about having knee replacement surgery within the next year. I wanted to wait about 8 more years as I got closer to retirement but the pain is getting to be a drag. Has anyone here had it done and if so, how has it affected your riding. Recovery time? Flexability?
  2. Going in tomorow for my left knee replacement! Had the right one done in feb this year! turned out to b a wonderful thing. started to have trouble with left knee, had it looked at, doc said it was bone on bone, not as bad as right one was but still bone on bone. monday at 10:30 we get the left one replaced!!! Its a b----h gett'n old!!!! Like this new parts for old farts program!!!! Would appreciate any prayers you all would like to send my way! THANKS!
  3. I'll be off to the hospital early tomorrow for a total knee replacement. After dealing with knee pain for the past 8 to 10 years I'm looking forward to getting this done. Not looking forward to the rehab but at least it will be done in the winter and shouldn't impact my riding much. Glad they've got wifi in the hospital. Dennis
  4. got home on saturday after almost a month in a care center for my left total knee replacement. things are going good so far. im able to walk with out a walker now and i can walk about a block with the help of the cane. very little pain. untill night time comes? i have pills for that.im able to fully extend the knee. but not able to do so bending it. im at 95% on that and they want more? kind of sore doing that work out the quads are tight. and i still have great pain in the area the drain tube was? i lost 12 pounds and working on a diet. i went from 274 to 262 still more to go. i have pt starting again monday. one hour per day five days a week. and a half hour swimming on saturday afternoon. did any one else have a clicking feeling after a total knee operation? feels funny and sometimes i can hear it? all in all im very happy with the operation. i dont lean to my right any more. standing taller now. and able to put equal weight on both legs and knees feels great. now i need to see if my dues are due? so if the boss sees this let me know ok?

well after all that.s been going on in my life this year with 3 deaths. and such and not able to ride and selling the old 1984 .im going in tomorrow to get this left knee replacement done. i know there is a lot of work to do to get the new knee up to snuff. lots of PT and i will end up in a place for 2 weeks after the operation. to help push me along. then im going to push the PT as much as i can stand. i have put away 3 grand for the purchase of a bike for next summer.im not going to go with a first gen as i just cant handle that big boy no more. thinking a vstar? not sure what size? and if i can snag one for that price? i did see a nice one for $2800 and i should have snapped on that one.1100cc and had 24000 miles but my daughter said to wait as she knew i would have taken that bike out before this operation. and either mess up my old knee or the new to me bike/ dang kids where they learn to be so smart? anyways asking for a little prayer that all goes well. and with luck and hard work i might be on the road again next summer. bike wise. sincerly oldgoat
  7. Well, we were looking forward to finally getting some riding time in again after my 2 knee surgerys. But it looks like I will be putting it off for even longer now. The VA has finally decided my knee needs to be replaced and waiting any longer is pointless. Guess it helped that I had to have 2 surgeries inside of a year. Course the bad thing is my last surgery was June 1st, now I have to have the replacement on Sept. 20th. Oh well no rest for the wicked. So I have a quesion for anyone that has gone through this, how long were you down? How long after that was it before you were comfortable riding again? TIA Joe
  8. ok i just got approved for a total knee replacement for my very bad left knee. this will be done around the end of july. what i want to ask is? how many here had this done? and how long did it take you to feel like you could ride a bike again? also the right knee needs a partical replacement. most likely a year after the left. i was told that after the left one is done i will be sent to a rehab place for 2 weeks because i live alone and i have MS as well so they want me working the new knee for 4 to 5 hours a day for that 2 weeks the lots of PT there after. no driving for 6 weeks? this sounds like a good plan and i hope it works. not sure how much pain is invovled in healing ? im prety good at handling pain. and im sure they will dope me up. bad news is no new bike this fall. but hopes are for a good recovery and a new to me bike in the summer of 2013 i will have about $3900 to $4200 for a bike. wont be able to find one with the voyager trike kit for that amount. but if i get a light bike and low in the seat hight i should be able to hold it up. well let me know how you all did if you had this type of operation. and how long it took ya to get back on a bike thanks oldgoat
  9. Putting this out there for having a M/D on Sat. March 31st. I wasn't able to do it this past year due to knee replacement. I'm looking to have one this next year again so lets see what we can setup. Steve

    Goin bionic

My doc just informed me its time to start thinking about a knee replacement. I remember people talking about their experiences with this and was hoping for some feedback about what to watch out for! Is one brand knee better than another? Thanks, Kenw
  11. After going through a series of clearance tests I was all set for my Feb 9th Total Knee Replacement surgery date. Got a call this morning from the surgical coordinator saying that due to a large amount of emergency surgeries that have come up they have to cancel my elective surgery until April 26th. I was stunned. Just how many emergencies surgeries could there have been? I was supposed to be on a cancellation list but I took my name off of it because Feb 9th date fit my schedule nicely. Now when i asked about the cancellation list the coordinator says she will put me on it but that cancellations are rare. They did offer to have another surgeon do the surgery on Jan 29th but this Dr uses a Depuy knee, which I do not want. My Dr uses a Stryker Triathlon knee, and after having done my research I was happy with the choice. It does not sound right to me. Im waiting for a return call. I dont want to start this process over with another Dr and another clinic but I also dont want to be screwed around with. What happens in April when they call again with another slew of emergencies? And what about the time limits on my clearances? Right now im just venting. But what I dont understand is why cant the other Dr handle his emergencies. It really sounds like they just dont want to do the surgery.
  12. ...I'm all wet. I need some recommendations on rain gear. I've got a pair of Frogg Toggs, but they're too bulky and not heat resistant. They're great as far as keeping the rain and road mist off my shins, but the right leg has too much extra material that winds up resting on the exhaust. It's already got a hole in it behind the right knee, and it left a tarnish on my pipe (which I can fix.) I'm basically looking for rain gear that's not baggy. Even if it's something of a heat resistant rubber pant suit that's loose enough to be easy going over the top of my jeans and thermals. Btw, as GAWildKat just took the liberty of reminding me, I'm not on a Venture yet. I'm on a Suzuki Volusia 800, and the exhaust runs down the right side of the bike, just below my knee.

    Biker Down

Son had a bad crash yesterday evening. Went down avoiding the rearend of a SUV. Chose the grassy medium instead of the rear bumper of the SUV. Messed up his Road Star and caused him to have a broken knee cap and fracture rib. Probably will need surgery to correct his knee injury. Bike probably a total. Could have been worse had he not been wearing the proper protective gear. Said he was not speeding and he rolled after impacting the ground like a ball. Glad he's alive! Prayer would be greatly appreciated for his full recovery. He's a great son!
  14. Been home from work the last 4 days. The right knee that I had surgery on less than 2 years ago is failing. Im scared to get the knee replacement I need. Several friends who have had it are now having scar tissue problems along with mobility issues. Right now riding is out of the question. Had to take 4000 mg of naproxen last friday just to get through the night at work, which is causing some other issues. Thats 3000mg more then recommended. Selling the bike was also a thought, fleeting as it may have been. So, I have some major thinking to do...... Now, where are my drugs......
  15. well i been haveing terrible knee pain in both knees. my left knee has been operated on over 17 times in just about as many years. there is now bone on bone. last night it tried to lock up? never had that before? heard a loud pop? now lots of pain. im going in for some injections. some xrays. and a possible MRI. i have been trying to get the doctor to replace this bad left knee. ever since the workers comp accident to it. im still fighting that case. of coure the doctor says your too young im 53 to have a total knee replacement? lets just keep doing the injections. well i got news for him. its my body my insurance company pays the bill. so lets get er done. no one should have to suffer if there is a better fix out there. granted a total knee replacement scares the crap out of me. like can i ride again? should i sell the venture and find a smaller bike?. it,s been over a year and a half and i have not taken the venture out for no more then 100 miles in that year and a half. im frustrated broke and just want to feel good again. get a bike i can handle. and maybe make that last run? well thanks for letting me get this out. off to see the doctor.
  16. I've had trouble with my knees for a few years and I still get around OK but I am considering a knee replacement before I get to the point that I can't function. The doc says I could wait another year or two but I would like to get back to being able to walk a few miles. Has anyone been through the surgery and if so, how was the recovery and rehab? How long before you were back to work, driving and on the bike? Would you do it again? Thanks, Dennis
  17. Yesterday, my wife and I were following a young guy on a crotch rocket. We were stopped at the light as we were coming out of a shopping center onto a 4 lane road. The sport bike was turning left so he had to cross 2 lanes before getting into his turn. He had a car in front of him as he turned, so he was doing all of about 15 mph. With all the style and grace of an experienced road racer, he shifted his weight to the left side of the seat, hooking his right knee and extended his low side knee outward 90 degrees to the bike. I laughed out loud... I mean COME ON.....15MPH????? He didn't even make it a sharp turn...just a gentle arc!He was leaning all of about 5 degrees!!!! In fact he probably had to lean to the RIGHT to compensate for the weight shift! But, my wife, loving and generous as she is, said we should give him the benefit of the doubt....he might not be an idiot....maybe he just shifted his weight because had to fart!
  18. Wanted to thank Buddy Rich for the quality knee wind deflectors I received from him last week... Mounted them and rode the bike in to work today.... Wind turbulence way down, I think I'm gonna like 'em.....
  19. My future son-in-law has been wanting to learn to ride, always asking me to teach him. I continually told him to take the MSF beginner class, that I wouldn't teach him on my bikes. Well.... after he got off work last night one of his co-workers said he could ride his 1100 Honda in the parking lot, Let's just say it didn't go as planned. 2 laps around the lot... over the parking block... side swiped the building before hitting the cement filled steel pole with his knee which caused him and the bike on top of him to go skidding 15 feet across the pavement He now has multiple patches of road rash, a knee the size of a grapefruit and a complete understanding of why I told him to take the MSF and wear protective gear. Here's a few pictures for your viewing enjoyment.
  20. Looks like my riding season will be shortened for a while. Went to see a different orthopedic surgeon yesterday about my right knee, which was scoped out 2 years ago by another surgeon and is failing. I was hoping he would be able to do another scope to buy me some more time but after his thorough evaluation he says I definitely need a new knee. There are several things going on in there that just cant be scoped out. He also looked at pics of my left knee and said that it looked much worse then my right knee. I told him that knee was scoped out in 1998 and its been holding up fine save for some low level pain. He was surprised. Either way, looks like ill be shooting for a Jan 2012 surgery date. I should have sufficient leave for this by then. He also took me off naproxen and started me on Celebrex, which seems to be working a little better. WooHoo, only 10 more months to go!!
  21. I have noticed in the past that several members are or were active duty military. I have a couple of questions about dealing with the VA. When I was in the USAF, I had surgery done on my knee and my miniscus carteldge was removed. The VA filed me as less than 10% disabled. While I do get to go to the VA clinics and they have done a follow up surgery, I am needing surgery again. The surgeon even says my cartiledge is gone and I should be on disability. Unfortunately for me, the nearest hospital is New Orleans. After Katrina, the hospital was damaged beyond repair. They are currently using Tulane Univ. training hospital but are limited on the number of days they have access to the surgery. Presently, I have basically additional floating bones in my knee area that keep floating into the joint area and creating a rather electifying experience. I am on the list for surgery to remove the particals as I am "too young" for replacement, but have not been scheduled. And truthfully, not sure when it will happen. My questions are: 1. How do I get the VA to upgrade, my disability - I have tried being reevaluated, but they just touch my scar and say nothing has changed. 2. How do I get the VA to move me up on their schedule, I have been waiting since Halloween and jonesing to ride my bike. TIA Joe
  22. Well I have scheduled to have my right knee to have total knee replacement surgery on Feb 7th. So the I will have 2 bionic knees. One other nice thing is the drugs I get also take my headaches away. Just too bad I get take these drugs all the time. :rotfl:Oh well. Please wish me well on the 7th and send a little prayer my way. Thanks.
  23. well not with motorcycles. but moving up with my PT and moving a little better. i now moved up from snail to turtle. i made it half way around the gym. today with the use of the walker. orthopedic doc said the left knee is in real bad shape and the last operation. back in november 2009 prety much did it in there is verry little cushion. cartlage. left the bone on bone. is makeing the knee cap grind. he agreed to let me keep it untill july. then we talk total replacement. he said he would like it done before next winter. because i need to move that new knee around and in the winter there is verry little room around here to walk and exersize. im just happy i can now stand and move even if its not verry far and i need the use of a walker. where trying to get me back to the use of a cane. i have 2 weddings to attend my daughter in may. and a old friend in july. one i give the daughter away. the other im the best man. he,s a old neighbor from MN just cant figure out why a 72 year old would get married again. and ask me to be his best man/ i think he out lived all of his other neigbors LOL. or could be all the scrap we use to collect and find out we spent more time cleaning that crap. just to make a few$$. but the memories of him and how tough that old bugger is. makes it all worth the while.

  25. After recently having a complete knee replacement I went to my Doctor for a 3 month checkup. I had been having a problem with the knee swelling badly and I asked him what I could do about it. His diagnosis was for me to take viagra 2 times a day backwards.
