In a few months, I'll be taking off my rear tire for replacement. Now I also have to think about greasing the splines, etc. What parts should I have on hand, before I tackle the job: 1) J&H Jack - on hand 2) Carbon One with Legs - on hand 3) Bolt to remove the axle bolt - What size do I need for this? Socket? 4) Shaft Drive Seal part - (need 2) - part # 93108-43013-00 - will order soon. 5) Honda Moly60 Tube - will order soon. 6) Rear End Gear Oil - on hand 7) ??? 8) ???

Thanks for all your response. Now you guys got me thinking more? I agree, tires is something you should not compromise on...I've looked and looked (must be looking in the wrong place) and could not find the best site where they sell Dunlop Elite 3 Rear tires. Can someone also please educate me on Bias as opposed to Radial Tires for motorcycles. The OEM Bridgestones are Bias tires. I am very ready to buy, just want to find the best deal.
-
5000 miles on a tire is very low even if I guess we are talking about sport bike tires . I will have to think this over real good. The Elite's according to past threads in this forum are great tires. Not sure if they sell this or not. Avon tires are the most expensive at $160 per tire...potentially may last longer too.

I almost have 9K miles on my OEM Bridgestones and I may be able to squeeze in another 2K. Had some feel on D404's and put in 15K miles on in, but that was from a lighter bike. Yep, the price is good with Free Shipping. I can also get OEM G702 Bridgestones for 10 bucks more per tire. Thanks for your input.

Currently shopping around for tires and came across motorcycle-superstore's website and came across the best deal on Dunlop D404 (Rear and Front). - 150/90H-15 for $90.99 (Rear) and -150/80H-16 for $97.99 (Front). For both tires, it is free shipping. What do you guys think? Not sure if radial or bias, etc. I may go ahead and order these tires tomorrow, before Monday.

Sorry to hear about your accident, but glad to know that both of you are ok. Get healed soon and hope you can get a replacement ride in the near future. I also have an '07 and regularly check my tire pressure. This time, I may pay closer attention to the valve stems as well. My rear tire may have 2K miles left, so I am debating whether to keep the old valve stem or have them replace it with a new one. Not sure what the standard procedure is for tire changes ... unless if we ask for the valve stem to be replaced.

Cruise Control Problem
N3FOL replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Well, it only happened to me just once so far...as I was cruising down the highway and placed it on CC and it won't engage with the 'SET' light lit. Tried to turn off and cancel and re-engage CC with no success. I was just travelling at 70 mph:cry:...got home, parked the bike and rode the next day. Long behold, CC is working once again. Never had any problems ever since...so far. -
Gerbings Heated Gear and my 09 RSV
N3FOL replied to csogbk's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not sure how long you would like to ride in the cold and where. With my setup, I have Gerbings Gloves and Liner. With temps in the 40's, I can ride for an hour or two with no problems with just gloves, chaps, and my leather jacket. I do not have to turn on the liner. With temps in the 20's and 30's, I will just turn On my liner for a few minutes and then I have to turn it off. It will be just my gloves that will be turned On most of the time. Chaps is more than enough for my legs. As you know, you have good wind deflection right by your legs, so this is not an issue for me. For Liners, Pants, and Gloves....that is really an overkill...you will sweat in the dead of winter. IMO, Gloves and Jacket Liner and a good pair of Chaps will do the trick for Maryland riding. I live in PA. and work in MD....when you have your Gerbing gear all turned on...it is ideal that you are crusing down the highway so that you do not kill your battery. -
Do you turn the fuel off...
N3FOL replied to yamadawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm not so sure what you mean about water on the bottom of the tank. Please enlighten us on this phenomena. I rarely go on Reserve, but it has happened to me a few times on the interstate. If the intention is to at least empty out the tank as much as possible until you put in fresh gas in there, this may be beneficial. -

The term makes me :rotfl:time to time. It sure is funny everytime I read something about it. Well guess what, I arrived home from work last night and long behold...I turned off the fuel petcock. I just have to make sure to turn it back On before I ride today. -
They are great bikes. Not sure on the specific model, but an acquaintance tried to replace his front brakes on his BMS and the calipers shut closed. The only way he can open it back up is to tow his bike to the dealer, so they can hook up a laptop to let the calipers open. I do love the performance, but if you ever decide to purchase a BMW, be ready to pay a little bit more on maintenance work.

You started to make me think more about shutting off the fuel petcock. As mentioned earlier, I also turn my petcock time to time just to give me a peace of mind that it still turns. I may start to turn off my fuel petcock once parked inside the garage. Better be safe than sorry. -

Negative on this end. I always leave it at the opened position and occasionally turn the petcock all the way to reserve and back to normal position. Ride Safe. -
17th confirmed bird strike of the year
N3FOL replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
:rotf:You have a point there. -
Well, we didn't really have a very miserable hot humid summer this year. So local predictors/acquaintances are saying that winter may involve a lot of that $%*# stuff. I guess I don't have to worry about that until December of this year (hopefully).

Very interesting fix. Bike start right away due to a radio amplifier Power Supply (?) Electrical problems can sometimes be weird in many ways. Glad to hear that all is well and you got your bike back.

17th confirmed bird strike of the year
N3FOL replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
So far, I only can confirm one bird strike on my Venture one morning headed to work. The bird hit the right side of the fairing and down it went (came from my left). Luckily it appeared to be a smaller bird 8 o'clock in the morning. -
Disappointed with the 2010 RSV
N3FOL replied to Deacon's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My guess would be 30 years +/- 5 years. -
Likewise on this end - no riding on the rain. I check doppler radar every day. My OEM Bridgestones currently have 8400 miles and I'll try to get about 10K miles. When I got caught in the rain, I just slow down a bit and try not to lean too much on turns. Ride safe...BTW I am currently shopping for the best deal for my rear tires. OEM Bridgestones appear to be the cheapest and Avons are on the high end.
-
I travel the interstates everyday and CB can give me an early bad traffic report I get caught in a slow down or pile up. +1 on getting a new antenna and get it tuned to '1' on the SWR meter or as close as you can get. Ride Safe.
-
IMO, to modify the CB unit on the Venture is a waste of money. I am happy with the unit out of the box for short distance communication. Ride safe.

Disappointed with the 2010 RSV
N3FOL replied to Deacon's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
FWIW, Yamaha certainly attracted me to the Venture a year ago. Even if it is carburated...I still wanted this bike knowing that the engine was well proven for the past 7 or 8 years. As long as Yamaha don't stop making parts available for the 2nd Gens...I may stay on this bike indefinitely:scratchchin:. I am always looking forward to the next year's lineup of Yamaha motorcycles. -
Disappointed with the 2010 RSV
N3FOL replied to Deacon's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Love the looks of the '10 Stratoliner, but it is air cooled for a big bike like that and belt driven. This Model may attract a different group of riders with their own style of riding. Certainly unique for Yamaha right now, IMO. Just imagine, put aftermarket pipes on that bike - the rumble shall be awesome! -
Very nice project brewing there. Best of luck and don't forget to post pics on the finished bike. As I was looking at the new 2010 models, I saw a nice Stratoliner Deluxe with fairing and a shorty windshield. Very sharp!

+1. After 9 years, I would not be surprised to see a leak but this is minor. Get all your parts on hand before you tackle the job...as mentioned ealier, valve adjustment (if needed) time is perfect for this. Ride safe.
