Changing Coolant Without Mess

I went ahead and drained the radiator and removed & cleaned the reservoir. Topped off the radiator and filled the reservoir up to the Full line. After running the bike for about 4 to 5 minutes, I released pressure on the radiator cap and noticed that some coolant back flowed into the reservoir tank. Now the reservoir tank is beyond the full mark. Should I leave this reservoir tank beyond the full mark and then ride for about 10 minutes around the neighborhood and see if it returns to the Full level? Right now I could not ride, since it is raining and it is Halloween night. I may ride the bike tomorrow in the am. Your thoughts please? -

I'm very interested to find out exactly this swtich is located to do some preventative maintenance to it. A pic can be very helpful. I hope Storminyte took advantage of the factory warranty on his bike. So, what was the fix? -
I have no problem with Goose's comments. He can say what he wants. BradT, thanks for standing up for me. You are right, a part of my decision is to stay with the same brand for the front and rear. I am plenty happy with my OEM Bridgestones with ride comfort and handling. For the last 2K miles, I changed my psi to 40 rear and 37 front. If I get at least 10K to 11K on the rear tire, I am a happy rider. Attached is a pic of my Excedra waiting to be installed once I decide that the rear tire is no longer safe enough to use. Honda Moly60 and one oil seal are waiting in the garage as well. Ride Safe.

I picked up myself 2 Gallons of 50/50 Anti-Freeze Coolant from Advance Auto ON SALE for $5.99/Gallon. Grab them while supplies last. I think even though it is not motorcycle specific, it is safe to use on my Venture. Any thoughts on this? This coming Friday, may be the big day to drain the radiator and unplug those small plugs from each cylinder and clean the coolant reservoir. -

I've done coolant changes on cars and even replaced two water pumps and a radiator once in my lifetime. After reading more about changing the coolant in this forum, I think it should take me at least 2 hours from start to finish (taking my time). I just have to make sure about the plug that I pull off on the side of each jug. -

Thanks for the tips. I am now thinking of changing the coolant next Friday. I do have a couple of old bath towels in the garage that will come in handy. As far as the water pump drain plug is concerned, I think I will also bypass that step assuming that fresh coolant will have to pass through that pump constantly while the engine is running. I was just at Walmart the other day and I am thinking of getting the premixed 50/50 Prestone for the bike. -

If it is a deep cycle battery, they are designed to take some abuse. For a motorcycle battery, if one drains the battery completely it may be the point of no return. If ever the battery recovers, it may not be charging and keeping its charge at its full potential. Good point on the RR. Something worth checking... -
Very nice product, but pricey for me. For $500.00 dollars, I think I can buy several replacement bulbs for my headlight and passing lamp . I may wait until more products come out. What I am really waiting for is a better LED side marker next to the saddle bags.

After a few days of internet shopping for a motorcycle rear tire, I decided to order another Bridgestone G702 from AmericanMoto tire. I made this decision, because I still have my OEM Bridgestone on the front and this front tire may easily last for another 5K to 8K miles. After this set, I may very well try another brand and replace all tires as a set. Thank You for all your helpful response to my inquiries and Thank You to VentureRider.org. Order was place today, so I probably should receive my tire in about 3 to 5 days.

Looks like I will only need one (1) seal which is #33 on the diagram. As far as the driveshaft engine side is concerned, what is holding that in place? Does is just snap-in place on the u-joint. I read on past threads that there is a rubber boot on the engine side that keeps dirt, water, grime, etc. out of that joint. -
I received another email from Shinko's customer support and they said that the Shinko 230 is a V Rated tire. The specs. are similar to the Metzler, so it may or may not be a good choice. My gut feeling is that this tire may last for at least 10K miles as long as you maintain proper psi throughout the life of the tire. As far as price is concerned, the Shinko is for sure the cheapest tire out there.

ok with the picture, I see #33 oil seal is the engine side (?). #9 Oil Seal is the pumpkin side. (Correct me here). These are 2 different part numbers. -

It really won't hurt to replace spark plugs. Yamaha recommends that plugs be replaced at 8000 miles. I did mine 1000 miles ago using OEM brand NGK plugs. -
I emailed Shinko and asked for the load rating on the Shinko 230 150/90/15. It looks like the same load rating as the Avon Venom and the Metzler 880 Marathon. (Metzler tires is not recommended by majority of Venture owners). I've not read of anybody using a Rear Shinko tire on a 2nd Gen. They responded stating, "First of all let me thank you for your interest in Shinko Tires!! The laod rating on this tire is 992 lbs. I hope this information helps and if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask!"

Thanks for the diagram. I also have a copy of the Tech Manual and will review the parts and their placement before I start tearing down. This weekend, I am taking a ride to my local Yamaha dealership to pickup my materials. (off to reading sections of the tech manual)
