Thinking about buying a Venture...
N3FOL replied to sho_greg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
All I can say it that these bikes are absolutely very dependable and fun to ride. Just like any other piece of machinery, maintenance is a prerequisite to happiness on 2 wheels. Hope you decide to stick with the 2nd Gens. -
Rear Splines. etc. Parts List
N3FOL replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I think I over did the grease on the clutch hub last night. One thing I'd like to point out is that there is a thin rubber bushing under the hub as soon as you pull the fingers out. I saw it when I was cleaning the whole assembly. Oh yes, I did grease the fingers as well...I was glad that the fingers were not corroded at all with some grease applied to them. Also last night, I had the hardest time in installing the oil seal unto the drive shaft. What I failed to do is to remove the metal portion that I left in there...thinking that the rubber seal appeared to be glued to the shaft itself. I had no idea that that metal piece which is part of the rubber seal must go out in order for the new seal to slide in. After spending about 30 minutes trying to figure it out, I decided to give Eck a call and he gladly told me what needs to come out....Thanks to Eck!!! As far as the seal is concerned, it is not really all the way very close to the splines and I think this should be good as long as I can slide in the metal washer and put back the circlip properly. What do you think? From there it was past 9 pm and I decided to call it the night. This Saturday, it should not take me long to grease the d. shaft and pumpkin splines and attempt to slide the d. shaft back on the engine side. I may slightly over do the grease part, but I promise not too much this time. Attached are a couple of pics from last night. As you can see, the pic of the drive shaft still have the metal piece in there before Eck instructed me that that piece has to come out. -
Parts for Front Wheel bearing replacement

When you get a chance, post some pictures as you go along. I still have no idea where these front wheel bearing are and would like to educate myself as early as possible. -
Rear Splines. etc. Parts List
N3FOL replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks, KiteSquid. I had just picked up my tire tonight and is ready to be installed tomorrow. I still need to wipe off the old grease on the clutch hub and am really surprised to still see a descent amount of grease left in there after 11K + miles. As far as Honda Moly60, I have 2 tubes waiting for me to use. I hope one tube is more than enough to grease the splines on three places. -
Rear Splines. etc. Parts List
N3FOL replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You are very right. The oil seal appears to be in great shape though. When I pulled out the drive shaft off the pumpkin after removing the circlip, the shaft pulled right off easily. At any rate, I do have a brand new oil seal so I will also have to remove the smaller circlip (engine end) in order to slide in the new oil seal. With the way it looks, this is the only way to do it without damaging the seal. -
Rear Splines. etc. Parts List
N3FOL replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I already have removed my rear tire and dropped it off at our local bike shop to mount and balance my new tire for $25 bucks. At this point in time, I am working on wiping off the old grease from the drive shaft and pumpkin end. I removed the circlip on the pumpkin end of the shaft and pulled the drive shaft off the pumpkin...my suspicion is over...there is indeed some gear oil on the splines in there and there seems to be a little bit of grease as well. My question is, do I have to replace the oil seal even though I did not damage the old seal? The old seal appears to be still in good shape, so I am debating whether to go ahead and replace the seal or not. I also read in this thread to swap the inner and outer pads on the rear caliper. Is this method acceptable? My inner pads sure looks thinner than the outer. Please advise. I did take some pics as I was doing the job with my cell phone...the pics are not the best, nevertheless, it shows what I am going through right now. As far as torque specs... 1) Axle Bolt = 110 ft lbs. 2) Acorn Nuts = ?? 3) Rear Caliper bolt = ?? Oh yes, I do plan to use Blue Loctite on all bolts upon re-installation. -
Tire Balance - remove disk?
N3FOL replied to N3FOL's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for your speedy reply. I feel much better now...the new and old tire is already in the car. I'll be busy working in the garage after work tomorrow. -
I just removed my rear tire this afternoon and will be taking it to a dealer to install my new tire. Do I need to remove the rear brake disk for them to balance the tire? Oh yes, I do have pics on my rear tire removal...will be posting soon.

Prayers is sent from here as well. May Charlene recover fast after her surgery. Regards.

I've hand washed mine once and had been keeping up with 'Frebreeze. In 2 months, it is going back in a bucket of soapy water and have that soak overnight and then rinse. Definitely air dry only.

The *OFFICIAL* Gas Mileage Poll
N3FOL replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This thread sure did started in 2007...long time ago. As far as gas mileage is concerned, I may get 41 to 43 mpg during the summer. My Ventures lifetime mpg with over 11K miles on it is below. Off course, we all know that mpg suffers a little bit during winter. Ride safe. -
* 1984 Jaguar XJ6 - just for a nice Sunday drive. (80K Miles) * 1995 Taurus SHO - now my daughter's car. (175K Miles) * 2008 Prius - great in gas - lots of ammenities. * 2010 Prius - also great in gas with solar panels... That's it.

replacing brake/clutch fluid
N3FOL replied to Color01's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
+1 on Speedbleeder(s). I have them on my bike and it is trully a One Man Job. For under $50.00 bucks, you can have yourself Speedbleeders for your front & rear calipers, and clutch + a couple of 2 large jugs of Brake Fluid...and you can do your bleeding over and over and over again by yourself. http://www.speedbleeder.com/ -
Oil Leak - Top of Left Rear Cylinder
N3FOL replied to TrainMaster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
That is very interesting. So how in the world would someone do a valve clearance check without taking the rear valve cover off? There must be a technique to remove the rear covers. -
Oil Leak - Top of Left Rear Cylinder
N3FOL replied to TrainMaster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I also have the same situation on my '07 that I bought in '08. I've noticed this very small oil leak 3 months ago. I am the only one that change oil on my bike and the oil sight glass is always at the midpoint...so the crankcase is not really full of oil. The gasket remains to be moist with oil and it does not even drip on the sides the of jugs...fortunately it is not a dripping oil scenario. With my constant observation, I also noticed that sometimes the gasket will remail moist on that corner and sometimes not at all after a few days of riding it everday. I know it will have to be fixed someday under warranty. I may take a ride down to the dealers this weekend to show them what I mean. -
You are right, the $10 dollar gallon container is dino. SAMs that mostly sell in wholesale carry them in a box with 3...1 gallon dino jugs.
-
I've also been riding since Tuesday, but I really have to always wear my Gerbings. 150 miles in 2 days is a blast. I am hoping that this will continue until Saturday. And this Saturday, I am going with a small group of riders to check out the D.C. International Bike Show this weekend. Ride Safe and stay warm everyone.

I really very worried about you.

The more I hear about this Rotella 15W40, the more I am inclined to get the oil for my Venture. Advance Auto in our area recently had a sale of the White jugs for $9.99/Gallon. SAMs is just $10 bucks and some change per gallon...Rotella dino 15W40 will for sure be in my bike next month for an oil change. However, since it is 15W40 and I do ride in 20 degree weather...will the oil weight matter at all? Perhaps not? What do you guys think?

I just knew something was not right. To my understanding a repo person will not reposses an item as long as it is inside 'your' property...they know the law. Once outside of your property, the said item can be repossesed. I may be wrong...but the bottom line is I'm glad to hear that the bike was found and the bad guys identified. Always lock your bike even if parked inside a garage. Ride Safe.

I'm in for that. Who's cooking the meat?

Does 25 inches of snow and -40 windchill sound fun to you?!?!?!
N3FOL replied to Chaharly's topic in Watering Hole
If I was a Penguin, heck Yeah!!!!!!!! -
First of all, I hope you can find the correct replacement for your helmet lock. As far as the helmet lock is concerned, I've never really paid attention to the bolts that hold them in place. Is this a typical occurence? I hope not. I'll be checking those bolts, when I arrive from work.

Front and rear tire pressure
N3FOL replied to Chiro's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The Yamaha Manual will say otherwise in terms of psi...and we all know that the spec. is too low even for me. I think Yamaha Manual recommends 36 psi Front and Rear. On my current Bridgestones aka rockstones:crackup:and currently 11K + miles on the rear, I've been running 37 Front and 40 Rear. IMO, as long as you do not exceed the tire manufacturer's maximum psi rating and take into account the load rating of the tire...you should not have any problems. Of course, the more pressure you put on the tire, the longer your tires may last as long as you can take a little bit of harshness on the bumps. E3s are widely accepted in this forum. Ride Safe.
