  1. I put 50k miles on my Road Star before I sold it to family. Good looking bike,,, looks like a motorcycle should. It is better geared for the mountains than the Royal's. But you will miss your Royal on the interstate at 75+ mph and long trips. At the age of both bikes, I don't think you have too much $$ in inventory that you can't justify keeping both. I have a RSTD and a RSV, one for solo, one for family rides. I enjoyed the Road Star but if I jump on it now,,,, it seems small. Go figure. Mike G. Oh, what to look for. Primarily the sticky valve syndrom. Mine got hard running on cold starts, but that was mostly winter, had to run choke constant on cold mornings. Keep the oil on the low side. If you start getting into the BAK and such, know what you are doing else you will fight yourself on adjustments. And don't use premium, that will carbon it up. I also went through 3 stator/regulator rectifiers, but it's okay now. You might think about making the stock seat more comfortable or get an Ultimate. It's belt drive so it can make some belt noises,,, you can usually fix. Like any of the Star bikes, it's a good bike if you keep it up.
  2. If it's already running good, use 1 or 2 ounces to every 3rd or 4th tank (for maintenance). Or if your bike sits, some each tank is okay. If it is running poor, then use at least half a can first tank and burn it through (shock treatment). Then, once running good, to back to "maintenance". Mike G in SC Oops, sorry for the repeat Brian, you beat me by seconds.
  3. Thanks George. Jeff, Got Khrome Werks! These are in near mint condition (only I know where one minor swirl is, where I removed a label). I think the price is good as they were only on 2 weeks. Yep, too loud for me. I actually put on a set of the Baron's 4-2-4 to tone it down. Click on the link above to see pictures. Also Sleeperhawk has a You Tube video of his. They are a quick fit and hook up with no clamp shown, my 4-2-4's have exposed clamps. They are loud, but not as loud as the V&H Shotguns I had on my Road Star. Check em out. Can send more pics from home. Thanks, Mike G in SC
  4. I have over 80k miles on my '06 RSTD,,, going strong. I got a venture to "take some miles off it". Venture is my family weekender car. But, my daily drive is the RSTD. I haven't decided which ride I will take to Madison WI this summer (from SC). I use Amsoil and change more like at 7K miles. Mike G
  5. Thanks all, I just talked to a Dupont tech (chemist) friend who was a Michelin tire Mfg guy. He confirmed what is said above, that the tire should be fine as it is bias. The arrow is for tread. He was more concerned that the shop does not damage the bead when removing it. I told her to make them let her see the tire before they remount. She would still be more comfortable with new, as it is the front. We'll see where that goes. The irony is she took her HD to a local metric (multi-brand) shop to get this done wrong. Oh, the tire is a Dunlop 402 with 1200 miles. She got 49K miles on her last 402 front,, really. The bike has single rotor on the front. Thanks again, Mike G.
  6. Yeah, those are two real different answers. I might wait for at least a 3rd one,,, LOL . I think I need to verify the tire type and how many miles she has. Thanks,,, Mike G
  7. Hey, any tire pros, A Harley friend (Heritage) has asked me a question. I'm guessing she has HD Dunlop 404. She rides local and even did SC to CA last year, so she rides! Your input might help her. I've had so many problems with my front tire. Riding back and forth to work I heard a lot of road noise. New tire, this must be usual! After looking at the tire I noticed the rotation was going the wrong way. So now I need to know whether I should leave the tire as it is or do I have SOMEONE fix the issue. My main question is will the tire seperate like a car tire if you rotate it wrong? This is my front tire and I'm a bit WORRIED. I don't want to be going 80 mph and have a blow out. Thanks EVERYONE. Deb Thanks in advance, Mike G in SC
  8. If you buy one of these and keep it in your bags you won't need to give it another thought! It's a great compact air pump (and all hook ups and hose and gauge). It comes in a small case and takes little room. I have given several as presents or door prizes. They list for $37 but I get them at O'Reilly's for closer to $30. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/SLI0/40001.oap?mn=Slime&mc=SLI&pt=N0184&ppt=C0337 Mike G in SC
  9. For the most part, "Out of site is out of mind". Your example of Wal-mart,,, I carry my helmet in and put other stuff in the bags. I don't usually bother to lock them,,, unless I have something specific of value. It is nice that the Royal Star lines have bags. Mike G
  10. I saw similar at a St. Pat's celebration (beer time) in Columbia, SC. The guy was okay but his girlfriend (who he was holding hands with at the time) fell down laughing,,, in fetal position,, same loud laugh!!! Witnessed by hundreds. I can still hear the ringing of the sign when he hit it. And still laughing myself just remembering it. Mike G
  11. I grew up in Beaufort County, SC. Sorry to say,,, that road ain't in Beaufort County,, and sure ain't Hwy 17. Beaufort is a coastal county, FLAT, lots of islands (some know of Parris Island (oorah), also Hilton Head. And Hwy 17 is a throughfare to go from Charleston to Savannah, now all 4 lanes in the county. Sorry, no whoop-t-doos. But pretty low country scenery. Yeah, I'd like that one too. If you want one hell of a cool single hump (almost airborne) try the Old Fanning Bridge Rd, where it hits Hwy 191 just west of the Asheville, NC airport. That's a throttle-up PUCKER! So much fun, you will turn around several times to try it both east and west. And the end by the airport is all curves. Not a epic road but one slick whoop-t. Mike G in SC
  12. Thanks guys, Found a) "rear wheel removal" under tires/suspension and b) "lube rear end" under engine & drive train in the 2nd gen tech library. Pretty sure that is what is making the noise. Thanks again, Mike G in SC
  13. I'm sure this is a quick one for some of you,,, I got a rear end noise in the last few days. With engine off, simply backing the bike or pushing it forward I hear a creaking noise like a old wood ship or a door. It's variable but repeats as you push the bike. It sounds like it is coming from the rear end, left side of wheel. Is this simply a need to grease the rear end? If so, can you put me on a link to do it? (Also, is it rideable or park it till it's fixed.) Thanks, Mike G in SC
  14. Bump ,,, it's today.
  15. Yep cell phones. What did we do for irritations 30 years ago? I chased a beep around my office for 30 minutes to realize it was a "low bat" tone on the phone in my pocket. Higher frequencies are harder to chase, hard to get a fix on them. And headed home last summer from the SC low country, I heard a high pitch screem as I was crossing a lonely swamp area of the Edisto River, was sure the engine was going to blow. The sun was going down, Sunday PM, and thinking, I was about to be broke down in Lizzard Man country. As I was about to pull off the road it hit me,,,, FROGS! Mike G
  16. Both my RSTD and RSV are lowered in the rear (Barons kit). But I didn't want the full 1.5". So, for both, I had a local fab guy make a pair for of links that are half way between the stock and the Barons links. So the rear is dropped more like 3/4". (Someone here said for each 1/4" you add/sub on the links you lower/raise the rear 1".) Makes a lot less muffler scrapes, less on the kickstand and handling is closer to stock but still give me a better footing at stop, with two up. On the RSTD, I'm also lowered 1/2" in the front. So, close to level. Would like to lower the RSV front 3/4" but,, not that adventurous. (Anyone in the SC area who's good at lowering the front on a RSV ($$) ?) Mike G.
  17. Extreme Sports Yamaha in Sumter SC is having their spring open house event this Saturday, 5/7. As SC locals know, this is a GREAT dealership (just Yamaha's). See the flyer below,, free dyno, burn out pit, bike show, food. Thanks, Mike G http://www.extremesportsyamaha.com/ http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs014/1103168065038/img/32.jpg
  18. A guy I ride with is about 5'4". He added the Flanders and kept original cables. He now has over 30K miles and never has any issues. Mike G in SC
  19. The end weights on my 2006 RSTD are different from my 2009 RSV. The RSTD have a alan head bolt that goes through them and the shoulder is unthreaded. On my RSV, the weights are solid (no bolt) and are threaded on the shoulder to screw into the grips. So,, may be different. You may be able to tell from looking at the plastic plug on the end. The RSTD has a one about half dime size, the RSV is dime size. Mike G in SC
  20. Wow, thanks,,, but yeah, got stuff to do and that will shoot the day. BUT, I did copy/past your post and emailed it to myself for "a later broadcast". Thanks, Mike G
  21. Back to the PIAA question. I've had several of the Silver Star H4 headlights, nice while the bright lasts. But that's for about 50 hours. The PIAA seems to last like a normal bulb. And yes, it is much brighter than stock, but maybe not as intense as a HID. It appears white (not blue). And it is the white one, between to my yellow passing lamps! I buy the 2 pack from Amazon, $44/pr. Carry a spare. Amazon link: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/PIAA-10904-H4-Intense-White/dp/B000MG40QW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1303294083&sr=8-4]Amazon.com: PIAA 10904 H4 Intense White - H4 60/55W=135/125W Xtra Intense White Bulb, Twin Pack: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31E5YHnwdIL.@@AMEPARAM@@31E5YHnwdIL[/ame] And, yeah, who found LED replacement passing lamps,,, lately? What, where? (The marine lamps got pulled last year.) Thanks, Mike G in SC
  22. That's funny, my deductable is $500! But, not likely to live thru a fender bender to collect $100,,, or go to jail! Mike G in SC
  23. The 2005-2009 RSTD can be lowered in the front,,,, Free Version. A friend did mine. You cannot get the same 1 1/2" as the Venture. You can get about 1/2" only. But for me,,, worth it. You only get 1/2" because the air valves will hit the handle bars if you go anymore. With that, I suffered no issues and got the results I wanted. I also have the Barons kit on the back but had fabricated dogbones half way between stock and Barons. So, I am lowered 1/2 in front and 3/4 in the rear. (I had the small tire at first, so it was 3/4 both.) You drop the tripple tree same way as the Venture (no fairing is nice). But my mechanic also figured out that with a little machining on the big washers and swapping them from top to bottom, you could get another little bit. If you do it, be sure and put a jack under the bike before you loosen it. You'll thank me later. Also, first measure the distance from the top of the air valve to the handle bars. That is the max you can drop it. If you go too far, you won't know it till you put it back together,,, . Like I said, though if you do the washer thing I mentioned, you can get another 1/4",, maybe. Anyhow, for your question about the front kit,,, for the 1/2" of change for the RSTD, I would not bother. Mike G
  24. I get my son-in-law to pick up the bike and shake it. Big guy. Get Rick Butler's thumb-screw nuts, on the member vendor page. They are much easier to hold on to when you are taking them on or off. But,,,, buy 3 incase you drop one!!!!! Mike G in SC
