  1. I just got back from a STAR Touring BBQ in Branson, MO. 2500 miles, 900 of it MO & AR twists and whoop-t-doos. (rode straight home,950 miles yesterday,,, whew. About 18 hours.) So, my stock size Venom is now shot (now at 22k) I called my dealer to get another and was told they can't get it anymore. I looked on Bike Bandit and saw it only on CLOSEOUT for stock size. Guess that narrows the field again on stock size 150/80-16. No Avon, no Michilen Commander II. So I am having them put on a Dunlop E-3 Friday. Mike G in SC
  2. I've lived in SC for 40+ years. Lived on the coast in Beaufort and midlands, east of Columbia. With that, and that you might like motorcycles, I's suggest looking towards Greenville, SC. I don't know about mobile communities but suggest the area. Pleanty of stuff to do, town festivals regular. Newer growing area with the manufacturing (BMW). AND>>>> MOUNTAINS are 30 minutes away! Mike G in SC
  3. Do they also make it in metric sizes?
  4. Like Jim said, Gravity Feed. I found my 2009 post about it(below). I ran for a week, almost 1000 miles until the dealer could get one in. Mine went at about 50k. If you get stuck, like Wizard said, you can re-route the fuel line to the carbs. in 15 minutes. Remove the seat, remove the rear tank bolt, lift the rear of the tank for access to the carb port. Pull the line off the top of the filter and re-route it to the carbs. (obviously you have to pull the line that came from the bottom of the pump to the carb.) Make sure you have a good needle nose pliers for the clamps. Oh, and a flashlight incase it happens at night. You should also open the left side cover and disconnect the electrical connection to the pump so it won't try to poop out any remaining gas. If you think you may do this for a while, buy a small cheap inline filter and a couple of inches of gas line and put it inline close to the fuel cutoff valve. You are good for lot's of miles this way. Might have issues if you let the tank get too low. Ah, and don't smoke while you are doing this!
  5. We rode Skyline Drive in June. Cost was $10 for two on the MC. Later I found out that you can get a Senior National Park Pass for $10. That is for life and will cover admission to National Parks and other federal recreational lands,,,, for life. May also include other discounts at the parks. It's good for your car load or you and 3 others if walk in. Got to be 62,,,, driver license. YES THIS IS A NATIONAL SECRET! Cause they WILL NOT tell you about it as you pay for admissions. You have to know to ask, really. I saw some older couples at Lookout Mountain pay for tickets that cost more than the pass. Then when I got to the ranger and asked for the pass,,, no problem. And hey, it used to be free! Not many bennies left. Mike G in SC
  6. Yeah, Bill knows his stuff. Yesterday I was showing someone I met in the mountains Bill's handy work lowering my RSV. Matt, when you called me a few months ago, I thought you wanted "some work",,, WOW. I guess. Tickled to see how it worked out. Mike G in SC
  7. That year the Italian Cardinal Sicola was picked by the conclave. You know of Pope Sicola.
  8. And just when did you realize it was getting soft? Oh, and never mix Seafoam with Balance Beads,,, sparks,,, don't ask.
  9. I had a Strat for a year (while I also had my RSTD). I sold the Strat to get a Venture (while still keeping my RSTD). Agreed, if it's not a 4 cylinder,, I'm out. (well, at least staying on old RSTD's AND RSV's till they die) Mike G
  10. I always used the home made version (a 4x8 and a 4" pipe) on my Road Star. Worked great, the bottom is flat and lowest thing was the frame rails. (Often called the $20 Harley jack. http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/bikelift.htm ) But gave it away (with the Road Satar) when I got a 06 RSTD. To many bulky things under there. Maybe Carbon One could come up with one for the Royals. Mike G.
  11. So,,,, in a couple or years he will sell the bike to get the latest. Then someone gets a clean, dealer maintained Venture with a few thousand miles for a good used price. WE NEED THOSE TYPES!!!!
  12. I got nothing to brag on but something interesting. Yesterday I lent a friend my 2006 RSTD, I rode my 2009 RSV. We ran from my side of Columbia, SC to the Blue Ridge Parkway below Asheville and back. On the tank that included the Parkway and about 40 miles of interstate, we both used exactly 4 gallons. So, getting same mileage under slow and fast rides. Also noticed that when we got home, the RSV said 434 miles and the RSTD said 434.5. Pretty similar! Two weeks ago on a longer trip in the mountains, my RSTD said 1063 miles to another friend's Valkyrie with more like 1010. Pretty sure we set a "trip 2" reset together at start. (And yes, like most, if my ODO says 80 I am probably doing about 73-74 on both bikes.) Mike G in SC
  13. It's a Sky Hook from the 50's. They didn't come in chrome till '62. That's a '62.
  14. I have two lowered Royals. (I wear 29 inseam) Both can be lowered 1 1/2 in the rear with the Baron's lowering kit. (I didn't go quite that far, had some mid length dog bones made.) But that alone is a poor fix, without doing the front, bad rake for a heavy bike. If you only did front or back,,, do the front. Then, the RSV can be lowered exactly 1 1/2 in the front,,, and the RSTD can be lowered between 1/2 and 3/4 in the front. (The RSTD 3/4 is by modifying and switching the big washers in the fork tubes.) Later, I will look for the thread where this was done a few months ago to my RSV (or you may have already found it). As for chopping the stock seat,, I tried that first. With due respect, that mod ended up going flat within a couple thousand miles and I have since got it built back up. With the height you are inferring, you need to lower the bike, the seat chop will not do it for you. Oh, did I say,,,,, I LOVE MY LOWERED BIKES! So does my wife as she does not fear my balance at stops now. But if you lower the front and later want to sell it,,, advertise that. Because some short guy will want it but someone tall will not want to go through the process to raise it back up. (And I just had a 6'5" friend ride my RSV last week. I got some chuckles.) Mike G in SC Mike G Follow this thread for more on getting mine lowered. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66844 Also get hold of Wild Bill (in our Vendor Classifieds) if you have questions. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=36
  15. Once you DO get them off,,,, Sand down the pipes (or emery cloth) then apply a liberal amount of Anti-sieze compound on the entire covered area of the pipes before you put the new mufflers on. Get the stuff in little blister packs at the parts counter or just buy a small tube of it. (Same stuff you use on spark plugs)
  16. YOU'LL PUT YOUR EYE OUT!
  17. Same here, Bill. I got the chromed bracket and the wire kit from Larry on my RSV. I just looked. No spacer needed on the bracket. Bracket goes from the ground post, out far enough (1 1/2") to the 90 to mount the horn. (Saying the full top leg on mine is about 1 1/2" to the outside of the 90.) But on my RSTD, which I did on the cheap with a Lowes fifty cent bracket, I had to make a spacer (looks like brass,, maybe a lamp part) to run the bolt to the horn. I do think the RSV mount is a bit closer to the bike than on the RSTD but,, not much. Mike G. But, looking at Larry's horn from his ad, the horn itself has a different mount area than mine. (mine is a 2 year old Stebil, but just like my 5 year old one on my RSTD.) http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/data/24/100_0292.jpg
  18. Yep, mono air shock. Run it 0-50 lbs (use a small Harley zero loss pump) PS: We were in Romney, WV a few weeks ago. The big dealer there was $17,950 on a new 2012 midnight, where the other dealer in Winchester, VA was sticker at $20,200, same bike. That's probably only a few hours for you.
  19. My dear old mom would always try to offer me bug repellant before I would hit the road to head home. I only tried to explain to her once that it don't work at 70 mph. She also suggested deer whistles. If it would bring her back,, I'd put some on.
  20. Awsome trip, great write up. Thanks for sharing it, Mike G in SC
  21. Bobby G. Try this one, it just worked for me: http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?PF=6&ProductID=HDCH-990 And, this is the one I bought. Again, it's great,,, but the leather is thin and perhaps simulated. They say leather but (?). But it does just fine. Oh, and it has a deep rounded bottom sleeve to slip in behind the windshield. Again, you don't need to push it in as far as the screws, just enough to wedge it when you thghten them back up. Let me know if you want some pictures of it mounted. Mike G in SC (used to be Beaufort SC,,, you heard of that Marine?)
  22. Andy, I got myself the "Scala Rider G4 Powerset" for Christmas. It's the 2 set package. Thought I wanted to talk,,, nah. Hell, I don't even turn on my radio, CB or even that cassette thing. I wear half helmet and gave one set a 10 minute try in January. I have an I-phone and in my brief try, decided I was not interested. (With a half helmet, need to figure out how to put the speakers closer to the ears. Anyhow, the set sits here and I will probably not use it. I bought it at the Competition Accesories store in Rock Hill, SC. List was like $400. I got them down to $300 + tax, so paid $321 out the door. I can ship it to you for say $225. If your research says this is what will work for you and my pirce is good, contact me at mikeginsc@bellsouth.net I will probably put it in the classifieds soon, just wasn't motivated till I saw your post. 23. Both Kuryakyn and Baron's sell bar end weights for around $40. They are made to fit on the end of the Kuryakyn ISO's. I think the Kuryakyn ends are a little bit heavier of the two. But either is not near as heavy as the stock end weights. The Baron's are bullet points, the Kuryakyn are more flat ended. Both look good. When I first got ISO's on my RSTD I did a week or two without. Then had the stock weights shaved to fit. Yes, I could tell. Glad to have them. On my RSV, I went with the aftermarket for easy fit. The aftermarket ones simply use the four small screws and go in in minutes. Using the stock weights takes some grinding somewhere, either the weights or the grips. I think they are needed more on the RSTD than the RSV as the RSTD bars stick out wider.
  24. Minutes! Took out the two screws holding the chrome trim. Loosened the others then just slid it between the glass and the inside of the fairing. It will slide in there. Then just put it back together and tighten it back down. No need to put screws through it. It ain't going anywhere.. The center bag is kind of soft and tends to hide the speedo. Just push it back if it droops. Of course, carefull not to break the tabs on the trim. Mike G
  25. Oh, hey, that was my old thread. Yeah, I bought the one suggested by VR members. http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail....uctID=HDCH-990 It is great in the shape and size. Holds my sunglasses center, camera on right, bike papers on left. It's from JP Cycles, called the Harley Bag. Say's leather,,, that is the only problem. Sure looks like they killed a small naguhide to me. It's a great bag but if that's true leather,,, not sure what they killed for it. Maybe a free roaming sofa. (but I would probably buy it again if I was looking) Mike G in SC
