  1. I'm seriously thinking about buying a trailer to use on our 4000 mile trip we have planned for September. I have a question that keeps coming to my mind that is keeping me from going ahead and pulling the trigger to buy one. Q. How the heck do you keep the thing secure if you leave it at the hotel while you do a day ride? Surely some of you have some jazzy ways to secure it so it will still be there when you get back to the hotel. I'd be on fire if I spent good money for a trailer and it got stolen while I was on my trip. Please advise.
  2. Hello all. Bad timing for me with most people already left for the International. I was trying to check my rear shock pressure before leaving tomorrow to International and towing my tent trailer. I just bought a hand bicycle pump to add pressure. When I went to take psi I couldn't get a seal and lots of air came out. I tried putting air in with the hand pump and it wasn't going in, I played with the pump and think I broke it. I can not now get any pressure psi reading with the two tire gauges I have. Any suggestions of what to do, or what I broke without realizing? I don't think I will be able to tow the trailer now if the pressure is gone. Any and all advice and criticism is welcome.
  3. well here goes, i want to get back into camping and don't know which way to go. a pull behind camper would be nice, motels are probably cheaper but not as much fun minus the rain and a cargo trailer could be used for camping of for long road trips. if i go with the cargo trailer i don't know if I'm still able or willing to sleep on the ground. please give any info you can, thanks.
  4. Wife and I took the motorhome with my 87 on a trailer out to the East Coast for a bit of riding in the Ocean City area. When loading / unloading the ol' gal on the trailer, (the bike, not the wife), I noticed something on the underside of the bike nipped a weld at the back of the trailer. Apparantley there's a really close tolerance where the ramp ends and the trailer deck begins. I could see no damage on the bike,...nothing obvious broken or pulled apart, but I can see where the weld on the trailer was scraped. I learned that for easiest unloading I'll use the motorhome leveling jacks to lift the front of the motorhome, giving less of an angle on the loading ramp on the trailer. In any case, the bike seems to run ok, although the diaphrams need replaced (just ordered a new set) The thing is that she started making some sounds that I first thought were major problems, ....sounded like maybe a valve rapping, with an occasional backfire on low rpm / heavy throttle situations. Got the bike back to the motorhome, and let her cool down and gave her the once over, finding the source of all the noise was from the 1/4" hole in the bottom of the inlet of the left muffler. I kept riding, with the noise, and had no further problems, but am wondering what could be causing the increased exhaust flow through this hole. (compared to the other side) Right side barely has any exhaust leakage through it, and no noticeable noise......left side has noticeable exhaust flow and noise through this small hole. Any ideas what I should be looking for before I tear into it? Thanks y'all.
  5. My red 84 is finally sold and gone, he also wants me to build a new trailer hitch for her and will buy my trailer also!!! Thank GOODNESS it finally happened! She left the house about an hour ago, I feel a little bit sad because of all I've been thru, done to and did with her But that's alright, 'cause now I can start putting all the goodies on the 08!!!
  6. Just wanted to say thanks to the general site membership. Been very valuable to me so far. Just got back from a small (500 mile) riding weekend and everything just worked great. - My stereo was locking up after 5 min of riding (ever since I brought it home). Pulled the connectors, contact cleaner and dielectric grease...worked like a champ the whole weekend. - Installed my baggershield windscreen while the fairing was apart....perfect with just the short section (I'm 6'4") - Built my first motorcycle trailer based on the tech info in the trailer section. Pulled straight and true...and she was loaded pretty good. - Hitch from Carbon 1 and aux wiring from M61A1MECH....again perfect. - Used Carbon 1's stand to put fresh E3's on the front and rear....that and dynabeads = 0 vibration. All this added up to me having a very enjoyable, troublefree weekend. Great site, and glad I'm a member. Now to try adjusting my carb floats and using the carbtune to set my A/F screws....I like that it's free and curious if it will affect my MPG at all. I seem to be at the standard 38-39.

  8. Had a great time with Marcarl and Wizard765 and our wives except for having to load Wayne's VR on a trailer to get him home.
  9. Leaving Saturday for a 12 day trip from Kansas City, MO to Bar Harbor, Maine, then down along the coast and eventually winding our way back to KC. Here's my question. When we go on our longer trips, we have a few more things than normal, and since we are going up to the NE, and the weather will be cooler and rainy from the looks of it, we will pack some extra things for that too. Now, I can get it all on the bike, including using the luggage rack, with the bag made to attach to it. When I calculate my weight that I will add on the bike, and then add myself and tailgunner, we are running pretty heavy, I think. We have done it for many miles that way but I am setup on the bike and have a nice little trailer that I can pull along... So, if I take all that weight off the bike (luggage, not tailgunner) and put it in the trailer with a tongue weight of about 20 pounds, would that be a better option? I will have less weight on the bike, but more weight behind me, and gas mileage goes down, and so forth.... So what say ye? What would be the preferred way to do this? Thanks Ex
  10. Planning on building a Harbor Freight, flat bed, trailer this weekend. Have to be at work Sunday go going to use the shop space and welder to put it together. For tongue length...1.5 time the axle length right? So if the width is 40 inches, tongue must be 60 inches. Now is that 60 inches out from the axle or 60 inches out from the front of the bed? Going to install the HF LED kit mentioned on here. Ordered a dog box from the diamond deluxe place. They had a special on a leftover trailer from previous order (damn near 50% off) but strange dimenstions, but I think I can make it work. The way I will mount it, it's 72" long, so will overhang the 48" trailer bed, will be to hang 8 inches off the back and weld angle iron to frame it in (extend the bed) and figure the 16" will be out front where the cooler should go (give a little more tongue weight). This sound about right? The width of the box is 24 inches, with the bed only 40"....so I would love to put the box over to 1 side and use the rest for storage...but I think I need to leave it centered so it pulls better, right? This only gives me 8" on each side for bed...not ideal but can make it work....Was just going to cover the open bed areas with the lightest gauge diamond aluminum I can find...to match the box. Initially the box was going to be temporary, only for the trips where I'd take the 2 dogs...but now thinking I'll leave it on and use for (mostly) waterproof storage on camping runs. Should be able to fit the tent, chairs, mattress etc on each side in the 8 inch areas. I've read numerous posts about how to adjust wheel bearings and trailer wiring...so hopefully good-to-go there.
  11. This story starts back in Feb'2012 when my beloved Motorvation Trailer got legs and disappeared over the horizon. Since the escape it's remained at large. It was insured so I wasn't worried about finding something to replace it, and after a few months I started shopping Craigslist instead of hoping to see the Motorvation listed for sale by the DS that took it. About a month ago I ran into a nice 2003 American Legend Trailer and bought it. It looks good behind the RSV even though it's black, and the price was very right. Fast forward to last weekend. Just before buying the AL I found a white 2010 Teardrop listed in a local auction, but ran into a scheduling problem and couldn't make the auction. To my surprise it turned up again last weekend due to the bidder not having the bucks to pay for it. So I bought it this time around. The price was very close to what I had paid for the Legend. I actually bought it to make a few bucks since I already had a trailer that I liked. Here's the conundrum.... The dang thing is growing on me, and now I don't know what to do??? Which one should I keep?? The Legend is built to retro blend with a Harley and does look good behind the '99. The Teardrop has cleaner lines and is like a cavern inside. Which way do you think I should go???
  12. Talked to Jim and we seem to be falling short on ticket sales for the trailer...This trailer is costing us a little over $1,600.00 to purchase. We still need to sell around 50 more tickets to come up with the purchase price. I know we still have about 4 or 5 weeks till the rally but I'd feel alot better if we had this expense covered by now. If you have not purchased you tickets yet, now is the time to get yours.. I know money is tight for most of us and if you had any intentions of getting a ticket or 2 please do so now. This is a great trailer and someone has to win it.........WHY NOT YOU !
  13. I have an E3 on the front of my 2nd Gen with around 12,000 miles on it the other day the front end seemed vary unstable on uneven roads but but fine on smoother. The tire looks OK but it seems to be worn more on the left more than right my question is can this cause the bike to feel unstable? I alway keep the air pressure up in the tires and this happened out of the blue you can tell the difference more riding 2 up or pulling a trailer. Even hitting the road snakes it will act funny almost like it hops or wobbles over them. I know you can feel the trailer if that hits some uneven road or pot holes but this was almost to the point of dumping it. I'm just thinking front tire is the issue but not sure, the front forks have been checked steering head and fork oil changed at 22,000 in May I have 24,000 on it now. Just wondering what your thoughts may be or if anyone has had the same problem, Thanks
  14. Does ANYBODY know who has the trailer Aussie Annie used in N. America last year when she dropped it off in the state of Washington??? IH Truck Guy is in Seattle right now ready to get it IF we can figure out where it is..... You can reply here or call me on my cell at 317-370-0139 THANKS!!
  15. Two quick questions for those who trailer often. I have an '86 VR and Piggybacker trailer. 1 - What air pressure to you run in the trailer tires? 2 - Getting some sway when I hit 75, below that is good. Any adjustments I can make? Dave
  16. Just posting a warning to everyone about using Harbor freight ramps to load a Venture. I bought the ramps just knowing they were going to be the cats meow. Had them around since 2-29-12 & just used them for the first time last Friday. Hooked onto the little trailer I have, backed into the shop door, lined the Venture up and drove it on. No problem????? Drove to Hog roast / Poker Run for ABATE Dist # 10. Went to unload next morning while the boss was in the 5th wheel "gettin purdy". Mark & I had agreed that we would meet in a city that was about 60 miles from each of us. I had a long hour to unload & prep for the short ride. WELL, I put the ramp on the end of the trailer, unstrapped the Venture and proceeded to roll back to the ramp and eased onto it...........BANG,xy//!!..!@#$%^&, oh no the ramp must have slipped. Nope it broke right where the tang sets on the trailer, then broke the hinges (3 of them) between the sections. Fortunately the trailer was only about a foot tall, but there I sat with the rear wheel stuck between the sections about half way down the ramp and the bike still about 2 feet on the trailer. Well I hollered for Babe, and I hollered for Babe, AND I HOLLERED FOR BABE, well you guessed it she thought I was hollering for the dogs & ignored me. So I finally thought you can't stand here all morning so I tried to push the bike back off the ramp, but when it went back about another foot it pinched on the non-broken ramp and pushed the bike over to the right & you all know what came next. Yep, I just got my right leg out of the way and let the 980# behemoth lay down. Dammit. You all know the feeling or if you don't you will some day. Well 3 guys came to my rescue & helped me set the bike back up (Thanks Pig Cookers" and get it off of the trailer & broken ramp. Of course I was 15 min late getting to meet Mark & Babe said "What took You so long??" Gish. Oh well nobody got hurt & Venture got one little mark. My 1st to put on it. Long story with a warning. When I got home I read the label on the box I took the ramp out of Friday. "1500# capacity cumulatively 500# on each section evenly distributed". WELL everyone knows you read the direction after the SCR3W UP. Be careful if you buy one of these ramps they will let you down if you know what I mean.
  17. I was coming out of Aberdeen SD today at about 1:30 p.m. and I met a black Venture pulling a trailer headed west on U.S. Hwy 12. There isnt many ventures around here, and I thought I knew most all of them. Just wondering if it was anybody from this site. The trailer was a car top box mounted to trailer, and it looked pretty nice. I gave a good wave from my pickup truck but I doubt they saw me (split lane road).
  18. As always, Craigslist cost me some more $$ today. Saw a simple ad for "cargo trailer" in the motorcycle section, clicked and it read "Shoreline cargo trailer. Works well". No pictures in the ad, no phone # but I sent a e-mail for more info and sent my phone #. I forgot about the ad then later this morning I get a call from the guy. I asked what kind of shape it was in and he said.....Well it has a few chips in the paint in the front from being towed and a small scuff in the paint on a back corner. I'm thinkin....wouldn't it be great if that were the ONLY issues?! I got the directions and headed over to look at it. It turns out he bought it new in 1981, used it gently for a few years then it sat in his barn "for a looooong time". His description was right on! When he first bought it he didn't like the short tongue and the way it towed and he wanted to get the ice chest out of the inside for more room so he made a new 1 piece tongue, added a rack for the ice chest, made a insulated cover for the ice chest then decided to build a rear bumper and have it chromed. He also said there were some problems with the wiring when it was new and instead of laying on the ground to work on the wiring,he built a really neat stand that slides under the trailer hooking on to the axle and rear frame section. Once the stand is under the trailer, you simply pick up the tongue and the trailer rolls on to the back and is VERY sturdy. This makes it a breeze to check the wiring, pack the bearings etc. He had the trailer stored on end in the barn for years. This demo of the stand gave me a good opportunity to inspect the bottom of the fiberglass and frame etc. Anyway, the fiberglass is in like new condition, the original paint is still in pretty good shape(good enough to use as is) and he included a chrome swivel hitch, the stand, the ice chest and cover and 2 new unmounted tires. It cost me about as much as a new HF tagalong would have but The Shoreline is built much better IMO. So far my only plans are to change out the bulbs for LEDs,clean, inspect and pack the bearings, mount new tires and change the plug out to one that will hook to my bike. I couldn't resist and took it to town, loaded up 80 pounds of dog food and a weeks worth of groceries and it pulled fine. I haven't had time to clean the barn dust off yet but it don't look too bad............ http://i47.tinypic.com/30139ea.jpg http://i49.tinypic.com/1zoak95.jpg
  19. can bigger wheels and tires be put on this w/o a lot of trouble?
  20. I know from time to time riders are looking for a cheap trailer, I'm one of them, I've been looking for about 9 months, and had settled on getting a small trailer and building one & then last night I find a gem... now it is on back order, BUT i'm in no hurry.. http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/trailer-accessories/600-lb-capacity-78-inch-tag-along-trailer-66771.html
  21. So now that winter is almost here, and the riding season has or nearly has ended for most of us, what projects do you have planned for the winter? My projects for this winter in no particular order are; Front progressive springs. Service steering head bearings. New tires. Convert driving lights to HID. Lots more lights. Upgrade stator and RR for more power for all of the lights. Replace or add to the two Bad Boys horns with an even louder horn. Build receiver flag mount. Build receiver cooler rack. Clean up some wiring that was done in a hurry last summer. Finish making my version of the valve shim tool. Check my valve clearances. New spark plugs and wires. Carb diaphragms. Center brake light for the trailer. Cooler rack for the trailer. Some of these are not needed right away so will get done on a cash available basis. Dang that is a lot of work. I better get started soon.
  22. Bought a new2me trailer off Craigslist this morning to replace the stolden Motorvation. A black 2003 American Legend Sport. It had been towed behind a Road King and it's grungy as all get out around the front end. So it's going to take a while before I can peal off the soot. Me thinks the Harley had a problem.... One thing interesting is the ice chest is identical to the one I had on the Motorvation. There must be a company out there making these things for MC Trailer Manufacturers...?? It also came with the complete ball and receiver off the RK. Also grungy as h3ll, but cleanable. It's one of the vertical type that fits up inside the fender with a 'L' shaped stinger. I'll probably sell it to recoup some of my outlay... Anyway it's a happy day in Mudville.......
  23. I recently bought a trailer from harbor freight for a trip this summer out west before I pack up for the trip I planning I draggin it around home a lot any advice on max weight, tire psi, suspension psi, safe speed, anything I should watch for as far as harbor freight quality "bearings, balanced tires" etc. Also I haven't tore off the stock lights and put my L.E.D.'s on yet, am I ok to run the standard lights as far as the staters go?
  24. Just finished wiring the beast for a trailer using a Reese Towpower tail light converter. Bike lights behave normally after completion. When I connect the trailer and turn the key the headlight fuse blows. I see two possibilities: 1. There's a short in the running lights on the trailer or 2. The trailer running lights are too much draw for the circuit. Any helpful thoughts appreciated...
  25. The picture is of my new (used) trailer. Gettin' ready to ride!
