  1. My RSV has a coolant leak, under the left aft cyclinder cover. It is not coming from the cover bolt holes, but what I think is the cylinder drain plug (looks like #1 in the center picture on page 3-35 of the service manual). This 'plug' has no internal or external wrenching feature, but the center is threaded. Can I tighten this plug to try to stop the leak? How do I tighten it? Can I just thread another bolt in there to tighten it? Or will tightening the cylinder covers push it in to hold it? The bottom cylinder cover bolt was loose when I disassembled it.
  2. New to the forum and first post. I have a 1983 Venture that I am using for the power plant for a Reverse Trike, now I know that a few will sat why not just ride on 2. I have had some major injuries that prevents this from happening. I started with a failed project that someone had got in a hurry to complete, so I brought it to my shop so that I could get some wind in my face. I tore the whole thing apart after I got the venture running, it had not been started for 2 years and the valves stuck for a few minutes, but after some Sea Foam they cleared up and it ran pretty good for something that had not run for 2 years. I then disconnected all the relays and the TCI from the wiring harness to do my welding for the pan and roll cage. Well 2 months later I decide to hook everything back up and test run the engine again. Well it wouldn't start after plugging everything back up so here is what has been done so far: Cleaned all grounds Replaced Carb Diaphrams Replaced Coils replaced plug wires checked fuel pump and relay removed TCI from under frame Repaired starter Here is the problem I don't get fire from number 4 plug. I can get fire from #4 plug if I unplug #3 coil and plug it into #4 coil I get fire to #4 plug. This must sound like I am rambling but I really don't know where to look next for the answer. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Happy Holidays to everyone on the board!
  3. My other riding group (ZZRBikes) had a ride this past weekend. I was carrying a passenger and decided I would ride the Beast. I towed her to Dallas and rode to Kerrville on Friday morning. The group (2 x ZZR1200, 4 x C14, 1 x R1, 1 x BMW, and my VR) left Kerrville at 9:30am on Saturday. About 75 miles into the ride my rear tire started going down. I found a hole where something had punctured it. We put a plug in it and rode for a while. The plug came out (first time I have had a plug come out) and we got sideways in a turn. We put another plug in and took it easy to the "Motorcycle Store". A staff member claimed he had a plug that would not fall out. He used a kit and punched in a rubber plug with a mushroom or umbrella tip. I took it easy for the next 80 miles to the hotel. In the morning she is still holding the 42lbs of air I started with. I decided we would ride with a group most of the way back to Dallas, safety in numbers and all that. The ride got pretty brisk and I saw 105mph . . . twice. I feel pretty good about this plug and plan on buying one of those kits!
  4. Could anyone please tell me what size of dowel or plug is required to block off the AIS systems? I have read the articles but not sure what size plug is required. Thank you in advance Chris
  5. Do they make an adapter cord that will go from a standard earplug connector that go to the AUX jack of my '99??? Male on both ends. It's probably the same one everyone else is using to plug in their IPods into the system, and if it is, where do I find one??
  6. Does the plug that goes into the side of the CD player in the saddlebag just pull out? I want to unplug and remove the player. I've pulled on the plug and it's not coming out. I don't want to break anything by really yanking on it. TIA
  7. So I picked up a 87 venture but turns out it has 40 lbs when hot in one cylinder, front right, put oil in spark plug hole and on re test reading went up to 60 lbs , the other three are good, yesterday I pulled the motor, put some oil down the spark plug hole and with the comp tester on hand turned the motor and the oil pushed out a valve on the exhaust side, so what do you thing ? chiped valve ? bent valve, bad rings ? I did not test any other cylinder with the oil I do have clearance between camshaft and shim. thanks Mike.
  8. well just finished the rear brakes getting ready to change out the final drive oil when lo and behold i find this(i know better to find at home that on the road)http://www.venturerider.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=800&pictureid=5051 the problem is the tire is already cupping has fairly good tread but riding two up with gear to tybee island will a plug be enough or not? dont have the money for a new tire, and yes when i pulled it out air started pouring out so i put back in until i plug it. would like some feed back, thanks
  9. In case anyone hasn't picked up on it. The 5 pin connector for the headsets on the RSV uses the same plug as the old 5 pin DIN PC mouse connector. That is the larger mouse plug used on the old AT computers. So it wouldn't be to hard to fabricate a Y adapter if someone really needed to. Cut off an old mouse cord for the male end and use a DIN to ps2 patch cord for the female end. Mike
  10. I'm stuck at work with an overheating 97 Tour Classic. The top drain plug p/n 1AA-12561-00-00 has broken off in the radiator and leaks coolant. The poor thing overheats after only a couple of miles and I don't have the tools to remove it with me so I'll be taking a few breaks on the ride home. I would like to replace it with something other than the stock plastic one. Does anyone know the size and thread of what's there so I can can find brass fitting to put in its place?
  11. Removed the fairing, (easy) and cleaned the audio plug with pin cleaner....if it happens again, what is the harm in doing away with the plug and soldering the wires together...seems like a permanent solution?.....
  12. We got home from St. Judes about 8:00 oclock, other than fighting the cross winds on I 40 everything went well. (even the plug in the tire) It was good to see old friends and make new ones. Hope everyone makes it home safe.
  13. This information will seem like old hat to those of us who have been around these bikes a while, but what I will explain below is that knowing and understanding something it is NOT the same as grokking it! This may be a little long, but I'll do my best to keep it concise. If you have noticed voltage fluctuations on your bike, this thread's for you. The problem: For at least the last 20,000 miles I have had intermittent periods of low voltage on my 05, but only when running extra load like passing lamps. Occasionally the voltage while riding would drop down below 12, and at idle even below 11. But if I turned off the driving lamps it would jump all the way back to 13.8 - 14. I also noticed that when the voltage was low, often just a sudden increase in load such as a quick touch of the air horn or just flashing the high beams would cause the voltage readings to go back to normal. I have NOT had any problem with dead battery. Although my bike is close to 100,000 miles and has the original six year old battery in it, I also noticed this identical problem on the 07 I had for a few months. This was a clue that I ignored. Analysis: These are absolute classic symptoms for bad wire connections or pin contacts in plugs. Since the voltage was only low when the load was high, it indicated that excess current was being sucked from the battery instead of being supplied by the bike's charging system. The fact that it was not always low under those conditions proved that the charging system did have the full capacity, but it was not always being delivered to the battery. On the Royal Stars, the plug connecting the regulator/rectifier is a know problem with the pins for the main 12V and ground wires often overheating and melting the plug. The excess heat that melts the plug is caused by poor pin contact that works like a resistor. Long ago I pulled this plug and it looked perfect. I also pulled the plug for the three stator wires, and all looked good there too. Over the past year or two I have periodically checked just about all plugs and wires, including grounds and battery cables without finding any problems. This problem can also be caused by an old or defective battery that just sucks up too much charging current, so this knowledge coupled with the fact that I still have the original six year old battery in the bike made me assume that had to be the cause. I never did see an excess charge current flowing into the battery on the ammeter, but just assumed that was because the only ammeters that are available these days have a + - 60A swing, and that is just too much to accurately see current flow on a 30A max motorcycle. I was just waiting for the bike to show some slow cranking to buy a new battery and prove the point. The problem has been getting noticeably worse in the past few months. Still not having charging problems, but probably because I have been mostly leaving the driving and passing lights off. If I did not have full gauges and monitor them regularly, I probably would never even have a hint that there was a problem at all. If the battery had died two years ago, I would have just assumed it was normal old age for a motorcycle battery. Surprise easy fix: Well today I decided to pull the regulator/rectifier one more time to check that plug. It still looked perfect. Although this circuit seems to be designed on the absolute minimum of what is needed for the 30A current, the plug does have a very good rubber seal in it that keeps out the crud if the plug is properly seated, and even after close to 100,000 miles, mine still looked like new. But still, I took the time to plug/un-plug the thing about 10 times to scrape the pins good, then I took a pair of needle nose pliers to slightly tweak the pins for the big red and black wires - the idea here was to make them press harder on the fittings in the plug and guarantee good contact. Well guess what? When I took it out for several hours, even with fairly low battery voltage to begin with from sitting for several weeks, the system voltage NEVER DROPPED EVEN ONE TIME! This was an obvious fix that I should have done a couple of years ago, but the fact that my plug never showed any signs of heat problems fooled me into believing there must not be any problem with the pin contact there. WRONG. The moral here is that even when things look right, they may not be. Never hurts to go the extra distance to clean/re-seat/tighten something that you suspected in the first place. It sure won't make things worse, and it just might fix it! Goose
  14. Anyone make one? What I would like to do is plug in an adapter to my 5 pin "pentagon" shaped pigtail for my headset and then plug in a 1/8 inch male stereo jack. This way I could use the speakers in my Arai full face helmet on any bike... any thoughts? When I ride the 650 Vstar I use the same helmet and I'm having clearance issues if I use ear buds
  15. Got brave today and removed the side panels, tank cover, and seat. When I removed the seat, found this plug on the left side of the bike. Any idea what it is for? Thanks in advance, Don

  17. I finally got my new to me trailer "thanks roadkill" wired up tonite and i'll say it was real easy. However when i started reading howto's by other members i thought it would be difficult. Some of ya made it way to complicated and intimidating but after a while i said screw it and did it this way... bought a "CALTERM" # 08079 tailight converter 5 wire to 4 wire spliced them in under the seat by the battery and wala i got lights. the beauty of the calterm is the converter is in the plug in where the the trailer plug goes so you don't need to get all fancy with splices and sh%& like that. so easy a caveman could do it....... "me" oh ya only $13.99 !!!!
  18. I have a 2008 venture and would like to get rid of my cassette deck and install what? I don't want to stock cds in the bike but I suppose if I have to I would. I would prefer a USB hook up to plug in an Ipod. Is there anything like that available ? Tks.
  19. My carbtune finally arrived. The bike still has the AIS. After removing the 4 vacuum plugs, do you have to plug the 2 AIS lines while synching? Thanks
  20. What is the purpose of the plugs closer to the outside of the spark plug (see pic...circled in red) It would be a lot easier for ham fisted people if they were "optional" spark plug locations! I'm thinking just a casting plug...but is there any mechanical function to these?
  21. Is it redundant to carry an emergency plug repair kit after putting "Ride On" in your tires???...because wouldn't any hole that Ride On isn't able to stop be too big for a plug to repair? Or would the Ride On in the tires prevent a plug from sealing the hole? Just wondering.
  22. I'm considering buying a Zumo but that's a lot of loot and I really only half-understand what all this thing will do. I would appreciate some input from those who have them and have used them. Any input would be appreciated. Does the Zumo plug into the bike's existing sound system? If so, how does it connect? If so does it then play through the AUX function? I understand the Zumo is Bluetooth compatible. Is that correct? Can you receive calls through your helmet headset? From reading the various threads about the Zumo it sounds as though the newer version may be significantly improved over the 550. Any thoughts on that? As far as playing the MP3 music, do you load the Zumo from your computer at home or does it have a jack to plug an iPod into? Thanks in advance for any information you might have to share. Kingbird '05 Venture (Liquid Silver)
  23. Someone PLEEEEEASE tell me that there is a way to remove the ignition coils from my 89 Venture without removing ALL the front fairing!!----I thought I saw a thread on here a while back saying you could remove the battery box and air filter and remove them that way--also--how common is it to have "cracked" ignition coils--bike started running like crap and a friend suggested plug wires---got ready to replace the plug wires and noticed that the first 2 coils are cracked all the way across the top--found a complete set on E-bay--but now need help removing the old ones!!--------Thanx------Larry
  24. I added a y adapter to my AUX input as suggested here so that my garmin could be plugged in. I thought I would still be able to listen to my iPod through the AUX input by the cassette deck. Unfortunately, now when I plug my iPod in (even when the gps is off). The audio is extremely weak. I discovered by accident that if I touch the back off the iPod to the fuel filler cap that the audio is normal!! I need to take it all apart again. Perhaps my plug became disconnected while I taped it. It's weird though because I certainly tested it??? The grounding thing is really strange too... The gps audio is fine...
  25. Haven't been on 'puter most of the week. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't get the dang thing to even turn on:bang head: We tried everything...pulling cords out, then re-connecting eveything -- except the plug in the computer-safe power board. Quickstep finally decides to try it in another spot on the board, and HEY PRESTO! we have lift-off :happy65:Powerboard decided to blow one of the five plug in's and as red light indicated it was working Quickstep ended up saying "If brains were roses, mine would smell real sweet"
