  1. Does anyone know if a 2007 1300 Venture engine will mount in my 2000 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. My local parts guy says the crankcase part # is different, but thought it would. I would like to know for sure though. Thanks for any help.
  2. Last Friday I changed out my Amsoil synthetic 10w40 oil and put in Amsoil synthetic 20w50. Thought maybe it would quieten the engine and the clutch whine. Around here, that oil costs $19.95/litre and it takes almost 4 litres with a new filter so, all tolled with taxes it came to $101 and change. To my dismay, the engine actually seemed noisier and the whine louder. I also noticed the temps on the gauge getting up to between 220 & 230. Yesterday morning I decided to go get some Shell Rotella T (non synthetic). I got the 15w40. I'm happy to report that even though I virtually wasted $100 on the Amsoil, the engine is quieter, the clutch whine is quieter, and the temps are sticking close to 210-215 on the gauge after a couple days running around the city in 30 degree celcius weather.. I drained the Amsoil back into the containers and kept it for some other future use. Think I'll be sticking with the Rotella T.
  3. I have noticed that the clutch is starting to engage with the lever just barely off the grip. Also the bike tries to move forward if I start the engine in gear, with the clutch lever pulled all the way back, but does not move after the engine starts. It shifts fine and does not try to creep while I'm stopped at a traffic light, nor does it leak down while I'm waiting for the light to change. It just appears that an adjustment is needed. I have downloaded the repair manual for my bike (1998 RSTC) and cannot find any mention of adjustment. Suggestions anyone?
  4. Since this 99 RSV in still fairly new to me, I would like to know if this high pitched tinny sound coming from the engine is a common sound of these units or is something out of adjustment within the engine. I hear it most between 50 and 70 MPH. Reminds me of an old Chevy that I had, and had to occasionly adjust the tappets to reduce the clicking sound. Or, is this something not to be concerned about?
  5. I have a old 93 Buick that has been one of the best all-round cars I have ever owned. I got this thing with 30k on it and it now has 210k on it. 3300 engine doesn't use oil. Have done a lot of work to it but question is. I found a Buick with a 3100 engine and the car looks like it left the showroom about last year. It is a 96. Only 38k. I would buy this old thing for a driver but have heard a lot about intake gaskets in the 3100's?? The 3300 as far as the engine can't be beat.
  6. Does anyone use highway pegs on their 1st Gen? I had to remove my lower louvres(see pic) to allow my legs to be able to extend out for pegs, but I haven't gotten a pair yet. It seems to me that if I put them on the engine guard, they won't be out far enough for me to extend my legs. I am 6'. Looking for ideas so I can get a set of pegs.
  7. Help, here is my problem. I have LED tail lights on my Hannigan trike and they are suppose to blink three times and the go steady when you apply the brakes. They work fine when I apply the brakes with the engine off but with the engine running they work fine for the first two times you apply the brakes but then on the next brake application they start blinking and don't stop blinking as long as you hold the brake lever or press the foot brake. The problem only occurs when the engine is running. I have checked all the grounds and it seems to be getting good ground. I have even run a ground stright to the battery. Any ideas?
  8. I recently picked up a spare Venture engine that was listed as a 1983 Yamaha Venture Royale XVZ12TDK. I am curious if this is the true year of production. The motor number is 31M-002788. Does anyone know of a online cross-reference for the Venture engine numbers to production years. The number range for each year would be really helpful. If someone has a bike with an engine that is close to mine would be useful also. I have searched this forum and others for a cross-reference and various online search engines without anything useful popping up. Thanks for any help..
  9. Hello all, I have a friend that has a 2005 RSTD. I have been trying to get him on to this site but he has a busy schedule. He was wondering what kind of mufflers he can run with out hurting the engine. He wants to remove the bags and doesn't like the way the bubs stick out there toward the rear tire. He wants something shorter.Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
  10. has anyone used any vmax parts to upgrade there performance of the venture engine? Looking for info on how too. cam, heads ?
  11. The head gasket on my '99 RSV is leaking anti-freeze from the front left corner where the cylinder block meets the crankcase. I removed the cooling fin to confirm this. This only happens when the engine is cold and it appears to seal up when the engine warms up. Can anyone tell me if you can change the head gasket with out removing the engine? Can the head bolts be re-torqued by removing the cylinder head covers? Any assistance will be appreciated. Fitz
  12. Hi everyone. Great forum! I have an 86' with 54k. I've put 4k on it since I bought it last Oct 2008. The bike rules in every regard. However, since I've owned it it has always had a consistent whine from somewhere in the drivetrain. THe whine is always there. Wether accelerating, decelerating, coasting, engine on or engine off. In or out of gear. Clutch in or out. The first thing I did when I bought the bike was change the final drive fluid. The previous owner was pretty neglectful of the mantainence so I was suprised when the fluid that came out looked almost new. No flakes or anything. I filled it with synthetic and nothing changed. Having experienced a failed pinion bearing on my BMW k75 and also my jeep cherokee, I know what dying bearings sound like. This almost sounds like backlash out of whack. However, in my experience, bad backlash adj. sounds different on the drive or coast side and also depending on how hot the gears are. This is consistent all the time. For awhile I thought it was the front tire that was cupped all to hell but I just replaced the tires. It's not the tires. Definitely coming from down yonder. There's no clunkiness or slop in the final drive and the bike is smooth overall. Just a whine that sounds like a semitruck (not as loud though). It doesn't bother me too much but I'm getting a little paranoid. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
  13. Due to current discounting, I am considering buying a Ford Ranger XL small pickup truck. As to the Engine, 2.3L I4, and the transmissions installed in those vehicals. ?? Also, considering buying a trailer, for hauling the bike south to Calif. to gain a few more months of good rideing weather each year. OK. I'm open to any and all comments concerning the Ford Ranger Truck, as to engine reliability, etc etc etc. -- Tear it appart for me if you have any information !!!
  14. I wrote last fall about how unimpressed I was with the Colortune to set the fuel mixture, and I promised then to report back on how my exhaust gas analyzer compared - well, here it is. Sorry it took so long. Most exhaust gas analyzers are quite expensive - $2,000 to $5,000! And my research shows that there are not a bunch of Cheap types, then a bunch of expensive one, they are virtually ALL expensive. So when I found one that I might actually think of buying, the Gunson Gastester, about $230, I had to think long and hard about just how good this thing might be. The few reviews I found on the web were contradictory - some said it worked well, others said it was junk. I took the chance, and I am glad I did. Before I go there, however, let's talk about the three ways I know of to approach this task. First is by ear and a tach. You simply turn out the mixture screw until the engine reaches the highest RPM, then back in just enough so the RPM begins to drop off. I am never comfortable with this method, since it seems so danged imprecise, but when I have used it and then compared it to instrument measurements, I have always gotten it quite close. Second is to use the Colortune - a device with a glass window in the spark plug so you can see the color of the flame. I only tried mine once, and I was unimpressed by how far you could turn the mixture screw in either direction before seeing ANY change in the color of the flame. That one time, when I got done - just guessing where to leave the screw, it turned out to be almost the exact right setting. I can't imagine it was anything but luck. So I think the Colortune is good only if you have a carb so far out of whack ANYTHING you do might be better. Real exhaust gas analyzer, where you can actually know how a change affects the combustion. The Gunson Gastester only measures CO%. This is not everything that a quality instrument would measure, but CO% is a good indicator of the combustion efficiency. The biggest problem I have with using a CO meter is that I have not been able to find any published spec from Yamaha on the CO setting for this engine, so I just have to use general engine info. Basically, CO% in free air is about 2%, so CO in exhaust at 2% is about as perfect as you can get - less is too lean, more too rich. Generally, an engine running anywhere between 2% and 4% CO is good. The Gastester is very cheaply made - seems like flimsy plastic, and the part that actualy reads the CO is just held on with double sided tape that falls off. This does NOT give one confidence. Most important to know, when the instructions tell you that this device cannot be moved after the 10 minute calibration, they ain't kidding! Any movement at all will send the numbers out the window! It is slow and tedious, with lots of waiting for calibration and readings to stabilize. But it DOES work. I don't have time to do a proper writeup with pictures right now before my trip, but I will when I return. I found that the setting of the mixture screws is fairly sensitive, with as little as 1/4 turn making a noticeable change in the CO%. This is particularly important when I contrast it to the Colortune, where turning the screw TWO or THREE entire turns did not seem to change the color of the flame at all! Hope that info is of value. Ride Safe! Goose
  15. Yesterday my 06 Venture developed a small coolant leak from the upper radiator hose due to a small crack in the hose. Short story: The bike is at the Dealer now. Examination revealed small cracks in all of the coolant hoses. This is probably due to the amount of heat given off by the engine and the hoses close proximity to the engine. All coolant hoses are now being replaced; cooling system flushed; and fresh anti-freeze will be added. I will now add this work up to my Preventive Maintenance List and schedule new hoses for every 2 years. The cooling system will be flushed and re-charged yearly. IMHO now is the time to give your coolant hoses a good inspection.....I can only imagine what a massive coolant leak at high speeds would have looked like or the mess it would have made of the bike and me. Boomer........the lucky one.
  16. Today I was called by the dealer who is fixing the engine in my bike. He told me that he had some bad news for me. The Yamaha rep told him that Yamaha is not going to stand behind fixing my bike because it had been triked and has a trailer hitch on it. The dealer told me that he is going to call the rep on Tuesday and talk to him and see if he can change his mind. It that doesn't work he will then call the rep's boss and see what he can get done. The dealer told me that I'll probable have to call Yamaha Customer Service sometime in the middle of the week and see if I can get them to do something about fixing the engine. The problem is with the piston. It has 4 marks on it that are on oppisit sides these run verticle from just under the top of the piston to the bottom. I'll try to attach a picture of the piston. I've had Yamaha all my life. Looks like this will be my last. Ken
  17. Well I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later and it did. Was leaving for a quick trip to the store and noticed that my trunk was not closed, so being the bright person that I am I stopped in the driveway and instead of getting off the bike to close it, I decided to turn around and just close it without putting the stand down. Needless to say my left foot slipped just a little and by the time I could turn back around she was going down and was too far over for me to stop. The engine guard did its job and nothing was hurt except for pride, just so happens the nextdoor neighbor and his son were outside and saw the whole thing. Hopefully it wont happen again for awhile. 18. About a month ago, maybe longer I posted hearing noise coming from my '04 RSV. The Yamaha dealer has had my trike for almost 3 weeks now. They have had the Yamaha rep out who thought it was a gas problem without listening to it. When he heard it he told the dealer to tear it down. What they found was the left cylender piston had 4 up and down scratches on it. 2 on each side of the piston. I asked the dealer how this could happen and he has told me that they don't know. This is the best engine that they have. They are now waiting until tuesday when the rep will be back and they decide what they are going to do. The bike has 2 more months left on the warranty. The bike has 32K on it. The dealer has told me that he is trying to get Yamaha to pay for some of the repairs, but I would have to pay for the bearings in the lower unit if I wanted to replace them. He has told me that I might as well since the engine is torn down. He also said that Yamaha is fighting paying labor for having to remove some of my trike kit to get to the engine. Of course my thinking is - - If the engine hadn't gone sour, the trike kit would not have had to be removed. I'm going to try to go back to the dealer and get some pictures of the piston if they let me. If I get them, then I'll post them here. I was talking to a man yesterday on a ride I was on who's son has a Suzuki and the same thing happen to him. He said that it was a lack of oit getting to the piston. I don't know if this is my problem or not. If it is, I would think that Yamaha would have to pick up the whole tab. of course I'm hoping for anything that would benifit me. Any ideas out there? Ken 1 - UP:fingers-crossed-emo
  19. OK guys this is my first thread forgive me if I do it wrong. I want to know your opinions on down shifting when slowing down, basically using the engine as a brake. I have done this for years and never had any problems or caused any damage to my bikes that I know of. I had a friend tell me the other day that he wouldn't do that to his bike. When I do this I don't over-rev the engine, so I don't see the problem. Is it too much on the tranee? I appreciate and respect your opinions and thank you in advance. Carl:Venture:
  20. does anyone know of a easy way to get that varnish/clearcoat off of these aluminum engine covers? Mine is half off and not consistant. I have tried mineral spirits to no avail . When i get them cleaned and polished is there some material that can go back on them to keep them sharp? Please advise. thanks! scott
  21. Heres a question in search of an answer. We all know that after 50k mile or so the washier that help hold seciond gear wears then. to fix it the enhgine must be pulled and the tranny opened . First question . Does the tranny open from the bottom without having to tear the whole engine open? Second question has anyone ever adapted a car body rotiserre to flip a venture over and repair the tranny without having to remove the engine? W#ould this be a viable way to get to the tranny with having to tear te engine out? If anyones thought about or tried this I'd love to know. Or is it even possible? Thanks Theres a free PB&J sandwich in it for anyone with a good answer. Phil.
  22. My RSV has developed a knocing noise in the engine. I'm affraid that it is a rod, The Yamaha dealer in Titusville, FL thinks that it might be also. I asked him if it was covered under my warranty. Which expires March 18th this year. He said that he would have to call Yamaha. He called me backe yesterday and told me that I would have to start a work order and that they would have to tear into it and see what it is before Yamaha would agree to anything. Never had a problem with the bike before, so I don't know if this is a normal thing with Yamaha or not. I took it back to the place where I have all the oil changes. He asked me to because if it was something that they did, he wanted to stand behind it, and would pay for everything and give me a lifetime of oil changes free. His top machanic, who also raced bikes for Yamaha, said that it either was the "chain basket" (What every that is) or the "cam chain tensioner", (I don't know what that is either. does that tell you how much I know about engines) I wanted to know if anyone else has had problems like I am having? If so, what they found it out to be. Thanks, Ken, 1 - UP
  23. Can anybody give me the Engine RPM in gears at speeds of the 06 07 and 08 models. As on the newer models, 4th and 5th gears are overdrive. I'm interested, in Rpm at say 55, 65, and 70 mph, running in 4th and 5th gear. I understand that the ratios were changed in I believe 03 or 04, so those bikes would be turning lower RPM's on average at normal highway cruzing speeds. My 89 is usually turning about 3800 rpm in 5th, at 65 mph. I'm wondering how this compares to an 07 or 08. Why ? Engine RPM effects the Amperage output of the Stator. I'm trying to figure out just what the reduction in STATOR output amperage, is on the new bikes verse the old bikes, due to the Lowered Gear Ratios. ?? Thanks, any info appreciated !
  24. Hey folks, help me out if you can! My wife loves to ride with me, the problem is if she rides very long the engine vibration she feels through the rear seat and especially the backrest pad on the trunk leaves her with a back ache. I just recently put new tires on and with the Avon Venoms the bike feels a lot smoother to me. I don't notice any engine vibration through the drivers seat but I can reach back with my left hand on the highway and feel considerably more vibration in the passenger backrest. I'm wondering if there's a support modification that would help, or if the standard backrest might be better than the one I have on my '05 Midnight. Any ideas?
  25. Does anyone have a left engine cover(shifter side) in good shape they want to sell? I could sure use one. Please let me know. THANKS!!
