  2. Would a trunk guard from a 1991 Royale fit on the truck of my 1984? If not a direct fit, could it be close? I know the bags were changed on the '86 and newer, but thought if I could get this, it would dress the back en up a bit and and some more lights. Thanks, Dave
  3. I recently, two days ago, moved up from a Suzuki GZ250 to an 1986 Venture. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to adjust to the bigger bike. Once I get going on the highway I am fine, but the starting up, stop and go traffic and trying to turn around on a two lane is a bit of a challenge. I am 5' 10",156 and small frame. Too much bike maybe or are there some tricks I am going to have to learn. Trying to keep from falling on my.......
  4. Got the scoot back around noon today after having the clutch I-basket installed. Put on a few km's (maybe 150) and there's not a whole lot of difference. Whine still comes in around the same rpm as before; however, it is a wee bit quieter ... a bit more tolerable. Maybe after a few more miles and a fresh oil change ..... whatevah ... I'll accept it as-is and just ride! Also got the carbs sync'd ... they were off quite a bit ... she purrs very nice now ... even the RK's sound better!
  5. Need to try and raise the passenger foot pegs 6" to 8" on mt 83VR for my Daughter before riding to the hub. Her feet touch now but her legs rests on the side bag mounting bars and hurts after just a little bit of riding. Long time ago I saw a rear peg that had a chrome piece that fold up and down on it that would add about 4" in height. Any Ideas?
  6. So my Venture has been leaving puddles like a Harley Davidson, and coating my saddle bags with oily goo. I cleaned off the underside, and then removed the side panels, spoiler, and lower fairing sides. I cleaned everything off again, then rode it to work. When I got there, my boot and lower right leg were nicely soaked, and I had a pool of fresh oil in the V between the cylinders. It was concentrated in the right rear quadrant. My rocker covers look mostly good. They're all a tiny bit damp, but not wet. I spotted the oil lines that gather in the center. After pulling the airbox off, I got a bit of a better view, but not much. I fired it up, and discovered the oil burping, and seeping from the intake manifold. Check out the pics that will follow
  7. Does anyone know of someplace I can get the vent that goes on the right side cover? I can find a left side on Ebay (which I already have one), But my right leg is getting a bit toasty now that summer is here. Thanks Guys.
  8. OK folks, I had mentioned in another thread about a new windshield that I was going to try on my bike. I had heard about this company from Bob Dakin but knew nothing about them. A few days ago I got an email from the owner of the company asking if I would be willing to test their new RSV shield and provide feedback to him and to our members. I told him that I was willing to do so but that he needed to understand that my report would be 100% honest and I would NOT support a product that I didn't believe in. Now it turns out that F4Customs is only about an hour from my house so I took a drive over there and picked up a shield. They offer it in 3 sizes. 14.5", 17.5" (stock height) and 19.5". The 17.5" and the 19.5" are both available in stock width or 4" wider than stock. I went with the 19.5" shield in the 4" wider size. This is about the same height as my Clearview shield. The Clearview shield was also wider than stock but this one is a bit wider yet. Now I want to say here that I was NEVER unhappy with my Clearview shield and have recommended them many times here. It is now about 9 years old and is still in very good shape. I would not have been in the market for a new shield at this time. There are a number of claims that F4 makes about this shield. It is scratch resistant, no optical distortion, they say it is very slick and really sheds water well. You can use Rain X on it and they actually recommend that you clean it with windex and paper towels and you will not scratch it. The RSV shield is new but they have made shields for other bikes and Nascar for some time now. I understand that they are a very popular brand with the Goldwing riders. I have no reason to doubt their claims but it will obviously be a while and many miles before I can fully verify them either. What I can say is that the shield fits well. All the bottom holes are actually holes and not slots as Clearview and the stock shields use. There seems to be substantial material to hold the shield if a screw or two get loose. The holes were all drilled properly and lined up as they should have. It is a bit wider at the bottom than my older Clearview shield. One thing I did notice is that the wider part of the shield at the bottom sweeps back a bit. The Clearview shield was pretty much straight in line with the chrome strip. To the point that you actually had to flex the shield back a bit in order to remove the chrome. This one sweeps back probably an inch. Not saying that is a good thing or a bad thing, just a difference that I wanted to point out. Also the bottom of the wide part of the shield angles up just a bit. Where the Clearview shield is pretty much straight across where the width extends at the bottom ... aligns with the top of the fairing...this one angles up maybe 3/4" or so. Again, not saying that is good or bad but a difference. I THINK I actually like the Clearview better in this one regard but this is something that F4 could probably tweak if it turns out that everybody feels the same way that I do about it. After I put a few miles on it, I may end up liking it this way. We'll see. Anyway, this is my intial report. The shield is well made, fits nicely, secured very well with all holes and no slots. As for it being highly scratch resistant and shedding water so well, only time will tell. They did show me a demo of a shield with a windshield wiper wrapped in steel wool. He said they had run the wiper for over 100 hours with the steel wool scrubbing the shield and it was not scratched at all. It IS a very clear shield and I've noticed no optical distortian at all. That wasn't a problem with my Clearview either but some with the new swept back version of the Clearview have complained just a bit about it. I will report further after I've put some miles on it.   10. Just throwing this out to see if we have any takers... I plan on getting into Don's on Thursday, so that leaves Friday mostly open (just have one tire change planned). If anyone will be there who is interested in having their carb floats set (2nd gen), I'd be happy to do a clinic on that. I've been thinking about this for a while, but decided that it was a bit too involved for normal maintenance day since it takes several hours to pull the carbs and put them back. But if we have folks interested on Friday, maybe that will work? Lemme know... Goose
  11. In my job we are always hearing all kinds of stories from convicts. I didn't hear all of this one but was walking past a group of Cons on the yard the other day when I overheard this. "And they had this cat called Yammer Dan, now that dude just wasn't wrapped too tight." Thats all I heard as they stopped talking when the "Police" got close. I did go look him up and he is from the area I used to hang out in. I have had my name since 1973 given to me by some folks I used to run with. No one inside the Prison knows this name. ( I don't think.) I don't remember the convict he is quite a bit younger than me but it almost stopped me in my tracks. Must have been sombody else.
  12. I'm needing new clutches in my 87 standard...getting some slippage when I goose it a bit. I ordered a clutch kit and replacement spring from Buckeye Performance (nice people, fair prices). I spoke with Rick and asked him what I should do to get a little bit tougher clutch, and his suggestion was OEM clutches, and a new wave spring, suggesting that I double up the spring, new one on top of the old one to stiffen up the clutch. He warned that it'd make the lever stiffer, but didn't think it'd be a problem. He seemed to know what he was talkin' about, and I trust him, but I was just curious if anyone has tried this, and what the result was. I'm planning on setting it up to ride two up, sometimes with a trailer, and want a pretty solid clutch. Hopin' to get some input from someone who's been there, done that.
  13. Hi Everyone, I have spent most of the day reading Darksider threads and seeking info on putting c/t on my venture. All of you have been very helpful, and I now have plenty of knowledge etc. to impart to hubby-----especially the fact that I will end up with more sex appeal after fitting a c/t every bit helps at my age !!   14. Guys and gals. After having my bike for a couple of years, I tend to think that white is a bit boring. I'm thinking of spending a couple of grand to give it a completely new paint job. I have some ideas in mind but was wondering if anybody else has done something similar? Would love to see some photos if you have, or be directed to any other sites you may know of where the 2nd Gen is featured with radical (or otherwise) paint work. The 2 shots below show the original, and what it would look like all pink. (Amazing what a bit of Photoshop work will do you you!)
  15. I am very close to tire replacement. Currently the stock Bridgestones are on there. I ride 80 miles a day to work and home minimum. July I will be riding a 3000 mile round trip to Oklahoma. I have been reading a bit on the tire front but am unsure which way to go. Back with Stock or move to Avon Venom. Any experience in this realm?
  16. This is a must see to believe it. The biker in the Red shirt is Mark Joseph, who runs the Gipson Tire Store in Millbrook. His buddy was in a pickup behind him filming the whole thing. This repeats 3 or 4 times, with each showing going a little bit slower, so you can really see what happened. Notice the biker coming at you duck. This footage was taken on the Needles Hwy near Sturgis. This all happened in less than two seconds
  17. OK....here's the thing. I've been smoke free now for 10 days. I decided to do this with no patches, gum, etc. Just cold turkey. The first day was really hard...the second day was really hard too. Then it seemed to started getting a bit easier. OR SO I THOUGHT! The past two days were absolutely BRUTAL. On Wednesday morning, I snuck a couple of cigarettes out of my wife's pack before leaving for work. Actually drove around for about 30 minutes with an unlit cigarette in my mouth and a lighter in my hand. I never lit it though. Ended up taking them home at the end of the day and put them back where I found them. Today it seemed to get a bit easier again. I keep hoping that I'm getting over the hump but only time will tell. I try to remind myself all the time that if I start back now, that means I've tortured myself for 10 days for nothing. I also try to remember all the money that I'm saving...believe it or not..that is about $350.00 per MONTH.....that's just crazy. I also try to remind myself that the doctor told me last week that the little stroke I had two weeks ago was just a gentle warning and I had BETTER quite smoking. It's amazing though how a little nicotine addiction can almost make all those arguments seem irrelevant. That's the other thing that I keep reminding myself of...that it is a drug addiction and I don't WANT to be a drug addict. So...I'm hanging in there. I know some of you are going through the same thing and just wanted to say....GOOD LUCK!!!! Let's be STRONG!!!
  18. Snow and ice that is......... Temps in the low 50's. We had good rainfall last night that washed away a lot of the road sand too. Even the hayfield around my house is showing a bit of green.   22. This is probably nothing and I don't want to overreact but feel it is better to be safe than sorry. There was a new ad posted in our classifieds this evening. Here is the link: http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=1567 I just want to urge everybody to be cautious. This is a member that just joined today and it was apparently just to post his ad because he hasn't posted anything else. He says that he works for a Yamaha dealer and probably does but I'm just a tiny bit suspicious because he doesn't know the year model of the bike he is listing. He says it is an '89 but Yamaha only offered that color in 1988. Not saying anything except to beware and verify carefully if you are interested in the bike.

Hey All, I just recieved a phone call from Tweetie Bird and there is a bit of a snag Don just found out that his work has him sceduled for some sort of corporate meeting on the weekend that is planned for Maintenance day. He just found this out today during his trip to Minnesota that he's on right now. I know it's a bit of a PITA but we will be having Maintenance day the following weekend, which is June 6th. Fortunately it's still 7 months away and I dont think there will be any serious issues besides perhaps Jonah on his travels here to the USA. We will be getting with the Oberlin inn and working on getting it all moved around there. Don will fill in some of the blanks when he comes back home, but Maintenance day will just move forward 1 week. Don is extremely apologetic with all this, but I dont see any real big issues beside a bit of phone calls to straited rooms out. He and I appreciate your understanding and if you have any questions feel free to send them to me. Don will only be on sporatically due to his workload this week....Thanks as always.
  24. After some searching here I'm still a bit confused. I was investigating a small amount of fluid found under the bike today. It appears that I maybe am getting a bit from this valve located right under the Rad. It's not too bad of a leak and I've added a new o-ring to the need to get list, but I'm a bit confused ont he on/off markings. The manual picture isn't clear enough for me to tell what I'm supposed to be lining up. So I read on here about how it should drop into a detent. OK...I felt that. I have the OFF lined up at what I'd call 7 o'clock as I look at the valve. I let the bike idle for a while and the temp gage seems to be reading ok. is this the correct position for normal riding?   25. It was 1:45 am when I was letting the crew in the warehouse and one of the bigshot executives was with them. Some of the girls on my crew had dressed up a bit for Halloween so Mr. Bigshot asks me what I was "going to be" for Halloween. The past few weeks have been a bit stressful at work so I half asleep replied,"Im going as a disgruntled worker who went on a shooting spree" OMFG! He about soiled himself! The executives all think Im a bit nuts anyway...which is good because it keeps them away from me and my crew. But he did bring me breakfast after kissing my butt all day!
