  1. Whats some good places to order parts from for the 1st Gen bikes? dave
  2. I'm really wanting to add a 2nd Gen to the stable, but funds are a bit tight. I was looking at a couple bikes online that are wrecked, but appear to only have minor body damage. Mostly busted plastic. Has anyone here took on a project like rebuilding such a bike? I'm just wondering if taking on a project like that would be worth while. Most of the bikes I have seen are going for about half the normal price. What do you guys think?
  3. Well, I didn't meet my goal for fund raising...but we joined up with the ride near my home when they made a stop in Sharbot Lake, and rode with them into Kingston. There were probably 200 bikes! Some of these folks are riding from coast to coast. ....we were about 3/4 of the way back
  4. Every decent sports car has bucket seats...now bikes do too!
  5. Doreen and I took a short get away this past weekend. We left home after I got off work on Saturday and drove to Chamberlain, SD. A short jaunt for most folks on here, 140 miles, but the longest tip we have taken so far. We took back roads and in spite of the heat, we had a great ride. The only problem we had was that I lost function on the speedometer about 90 miles from home. We pulled into a small town and found some shade. I thought that since I had everything else functioning on the dash except the speedo and odo, the cable may have come loose on the speedo head. I had it off earlier this spring so I could lube it. As I started to take the chrome timr off, I looked down and saw that the cable had come loose from the sensor on the wheel. Easy fix and back on the road again. We stayed at an AmericInn right be the Interstate. There were at least 4 dozen bikes parked there. This did not include those inside trailers. One Voyager, two Goldwing trikes (matching units and one with a trailer) and my Venture. Everything else was HD. I would love to have a fourth of the value of those bikes in the bank!!!!!! A hot ride, 95 degrees or so, but we stayed hydrated and had a good time. Sunday was another great ride. We left there about 7:30 AM in an attempt to beat the heat. FAILED in this attempt. Sure is sweaty in the leathers. We had stopped at a wide spot in the road on SD HWY 34 heading back. A group of 8 bikes and 2 pickups approached us from the East. First bike was what looked like an older Honda Hawk, could not tell as I was agog at the remaining bikes. These were all 1930's or 40's INDIANS! What a bunch of great looking motorcycles! The first pickup had a trailer with two more Indians and the other pickup had an older Yamaha Virago in the bed. Every one of the group was looking to make sure we were not broken down and they all thought we were headed the wrong way. I have got to say that everytime we met anyone on the road, they did wave back. Sorry for the rambling, I hope everyone elses had a great weekend as well. Dave
  6. We're leaving Sunday for a 2 week ride through MO, AR, OK, TX, NM, CO, WY, SD, IA, IL, IN, & KY. I'll be travelling with 4 other bikes so if you see a group of bikes with a Venture, Tour Deluxe, Gold Wing, and 2 Harleys go by give a wave or shout out to us. I'll be carrying a SPOT unit so if you care you can follow our progress at http://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php?id=6473 It should map a new point on the map every 10 to 20 minutes. Dennis
  7. I found a Prestone synthetic DOT 4 it says it is good for DOT 3 & 4 applications. Is this a good fluid for our Gen 2 bikes? Thanks for all your help.
  8. I've been wrestlings with the thought of a new bike. I have some trips I like to take within the next couple of years and well, I love my Blonde '84 but I'd be insane to try my luck making these kinds of trips on the old girl. I've had my GW's before and ran them for all they could give me. My last one gave me 180,000 miles of pretty decent service. Great bikes. I've been watching the RSV since I bought my '84 and hoping for some, well, modern features to be added. Not going to happen soon I'm afraid. I've been out looking over the bikes that have caught my interest and the one I keep coming back to is the BMW K 1200 LT. Much like the GW it's got some stuff that is over kill in my eyes. Power center stand, yikes, reverse, maybe need it later when my knees blow out again. Floor lighting.......floor? The saddle bags are decent but the trunk looks a tad small. I've read of a few failures on the drive lines/rear end and wonder if it's double U joint set up that is the culprit. The bike fits me well and and feels good for it size. I like the riding position on it. The motorized windscreen, in the tall version looks like it would be the trick for protection and road view. I think someone here has one and was hoping for some insight on the bike from a riders view. I know the maintance is $$ but that comes with the brand. I like this bike for the long haul type of trip. At this point a GW would be the second choice. Any input? Mike
  9. One thing to consider when riding a RSV with CT along with RSV's with MT If your the one in frount with the kumho on back, and get in a situation where you need to stop suddenly, the one with MT on back can not stop in the same distance. Riding with a couple of guys I met the other day and had to stop for a 4 wheeler that pulled out in frount of us, I got stopped it plenty of time, they slid right by me on each side, neither hit the car but it was close. and they several bike lenghts behind me when this started because I looked in the mirror to see if I was going to be rear ended as soon as I hit the brakes. I know different bikes stops have different stoping distances, my brother's wing will stop shorter than my RSV, bobby's harley takes more distance. But normally when riding with a group of the same bikes you expect them to act close to the same. I just thought I would post this just for info something to have in mind. and yes reaction time plays a part too.
  10. Just spent the last five days and 1300 miles in the Boise Idaho area. Outside of Grandview we went to a place called the E-MUseum were they have a ton of old odds and ends. They had a couple of really unique bikes. One was a precurser to the Tote Goat and the owner had added a "sidecar" with a tractor seat (our friends the Jensens). The other was a trike. The motor is from 1907, the lower framework is an old metal bedframe and the front tire is from a bicycle. Had and great time!!!! http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Boise%20TRA%20Rally%202010/IMG_0894.jpg http://i470.photobucket.com/albums/rr70/utadventure/Boise%20TRA%20Rally%202010/IMG_0895.jpg
  11. I owned an '83 Venture Royale from 83 to 90. It was top heavy but manageable with care. I am looking at a 99 and 2000 MM and I understand they are top heavy also. How do the two bikes compare in this important handling situation? Thanks in advance for your replies...
  12. We looked at bikes! We went to 3 different dealers here, one sells only yamaha, one sells all metric bikes, and the last was the HD dealer. The Yammy dealer was eh on assistance with the bikes, the sales guy highly suggested the Vstar 250 as his "daily" bike, but it was too small, was a bit eh on him looking at the 650, and over all the inventory was low. after hubby sitting on a few bikes and getting an idea of what feels ok based on what that dealer had we went to the other dealer that sells all metric. One of the managers was kind enough to walk us through all the bikes on the floor, not just the Yammys and give us all the pluses and minuses on each bike and which ones were best suited for what we looked for in a bike, all in all about 3 hrs of his time. Giving the hubby a once over he thought that the Vstar 950 would be a better starter bike/daily driver than the 650, said the 650 just looked a bit small under him and hubby said the 650 while feeling ok, made him feel squished up on it (heh). This dealer had a Venture on the floor and we were allowed to sit on it, we agreed it's like having a motorized sofa. After spending more time with us the manager gave us his card with the # to register for the local MSF course on it. Also said when hubby gets his license and comes back he'll let us test drive the Venture on the road, which was totally cool! The manager asked me too if there was anything he could do to sell me on a bike of my own to ride, and I explained my disability (I have cerebral palsy) and told him my concerns over the shifting and braking. He showed me an automatic that I could handle easily enough. From here we went to the HD which is practically next door to the last place. We were greeted warmly, but that's about where it stopped. We walked around and hubby sat all the bikes, says they are all too short, except one or 2 of the RK bikes, but the weight is better balanced, but wasn't enough to sell him on them. What really annoyed him was when one of the sales guys fussed at me saying I dunno how to get on a bike (I was sitting in the rider seat then slipped back to the passenger seat before hubby joined me. (HD gets a demerit for that) The as we left the salesguy was very snobby and said on avg it takes 22 trips into an HD dealer before someone buys a bike, what trip is this for you? Overall we had a fun day and learned alot of information and hubby got a true idea of bikes while we were out. Now we have some questions for you guys. If we look at older used bikes say early to mid 90's models what can we expect for being able to find replacement parts for the bike? What else should we be thinking about when looking at bikes new or used? If there's a question or something I missed with looking at bikes please tell me. Regards, Tricia

    Brass caps

I just want to throw something out here and see what ya'lls answers are. Here goes. How hard is it to put the little brass caps back on the idle mixture screw on the carbs of a 2nd Gen after you make an adjustment??? If you were a dealer, or someone that works on these bikes, would you even bother?? Could you even tell if they have ever been off??? From what I can see they are probably a PITA to get off, much less put back on.
  14. Hi, My blue bike's (60,000 miles) clutch friction point is noticeably closer to the bar than my red bike's (13.000 miles). Both are '84 xvz12's btw. I am trying to make up my mind whether something is deteriorating or if it is just the nature of the beast. All seems to work fine but the friction point on the blue bike is quite close to the bar and when released the lever does not fully return to the all the way out position leaving a big dead zone where the lever movement has no tension on it at all. The friction point is quite useable and comfy for my hand, but now I have two bikes I can't help but notice differences. Perhaps its just me being anal or perhaps I have some work to do. I am going to flush the fluid with fresh but meanwhile, these questions occur to me: As the clutch friction surfaces wear, am I correct to assume that the friction point comes closer to the bar? I read about weak clutch springs on these bikes, does this scenario fit the description for that? How big a job is it to supplement clutch springs as some describe doing on these old gals? Other suggestions ? Thanks, Brian H.
  15. Lot of cafe racers but some others mixed in also. http://www.pipeburn.com/
  16. Dropped the insurance on Lil'Red. Going to miss it but Too many Bikes.
  17. So I just picked up an 83 venture royale and wanted to thank this site for all the info that helped me decide. Over all the bike is in great shape, the only thing that i found that is not working is the The Temp guage.74k I was a little concerned about the 2nd gear problems known in these bikes, but it is at 74k and shows no signs of problems (i ran hard through 2nd gear to see if i could get it to pop out). I have a question about the brakes they seem very weak to me, but i am coming from riding sport standard bikes, for reference it seems to stop slowly, and even applying breaks very hard there is NO way i could lock either tire. anyways here a pic, and i enjoyed my first 250mi on it yesterday. http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1274634469037051500.jpg
  18. On our way back this past w/e from Indianapolis to Omaha NE, we pushed our speed pretty hard. We ran mostly about 80 to 85mph most of the way. I tucked in behind a Truck or SUV that was going faster than the speed limit and just followed them as far as I could. I stayed at a safe distance of course, but still follwed them lane change by lane change. My thought was that the radar was going to spot them before me. And, my Brother-in-law says that a cop is going to stop a full sized vehicle before stopping a bike. What do you think? Secondly, when 3 or 4 bikes are all doing this and you pick them up on radar, I'm not going to stop unless I am specifically singled out by the cop. I told the other bikes that if we get caught that 'the one' would be stopped and the rest of us would wait for him at the next exit. - Which bike do you stop if they are all going the same speed? craigr
  19. Can somebody tell me where all you need to check the oil on these bikes? I know where to check the engine oil but do they have oil for the clutch pack or is there a transmission oil on these bikes. I know there is rear end oil but don't know how to check it. Thanks for any help.
  20. I have an 88 venture with no radio/CB/intercom and would really like to have them. Does anyone know how hard it would be to install them or does anyone know of an aftermarket system I could get. I would like to have all three of them. I see a lot of people junking out bikes does anyone have a complete system they would like to sell?
  21. This is very short notice, but if you're interested, tomorrow is the Blue Ridge Fest benefit poker run. registration online or starting 0830. Blessing of the bikes at 0900 and starts running from 0915 till 1100. cost $25.00 last year they had like 500 bikes. It's supposed to be a 100 mile run starting in Pickens SC and ending in Anderson SC (at the HD store I believe) Brenda and I would like to go but I am not too interested in running a group of one. If any of you guys wants to join up PM me and we'll see where and when we can join up. If you are already planning on going and don't mind additional company let me know. temps in the upper 80 w. chance of isolated T'stroms
  22. I took a car trip about 350 miles yesterday, south on I-5 about 80 miles, then over to the coast to Raymond Wa. then N to Westport Wa. then back to Seattle. Testing my new Ham Radio setup in the Blazer. Anyway, Bikes on the Road !!!! Unbelievable how many groups of riders were out. First Warm Sunny day in a few weeks here. And the Bikers were out in force, Groups of 5 to 20 bikes, one after another !!! I've been rideing in Wa State for about 25 years now, and never seen so many bikes on the road in one day !!! I guess the folks who do still have a job are takeing advantage of Fire Sales, on new Harleys, and whatever !!! Never saw so many new Harleys on the road !!! And!! old ladies in their 70's, rideing Harleys !!!! I must have seen 20 of them !!! Whats Grandma been drinking ????
  23. I know that the 1200's have bad second gears. In second gear if i romp on it it's starts to jump. If i ever go quick anymore i just skip over to third. But either way its a pain. My bikes only got 37000 on it. I know that it is fixable, but for how much... Thank you!
  24. I have a couple more questions. 1988 venture First my speedometer is off about 15 to 20 miles an hour anyone have any idea about why or how to fix. I also have a wine which I think is the speedometer. I heard a really loud squeal when i get up to a certain speed, goes away when i slow down. I have seen in this site how to grease the speedometer but I don't know if it is in the head or down at the wheel. Second is there anyway to adjust the clutch on these bikes? When i let out on the clutch it goes almost all the way out before it starts to engage. Third any ideals on why i have a hesitation when I first give it gas. It will do it at almost any speed. Is this what happens when the carbs are out of sync or is this maybe from the diaphragms leaking.
