  1. After 31,000 miles it is time to replace my Kumho tire. I have been well satisfied with her travelling to Texas, to Utah, crossing the pass near Breckenridge, Colorado at about 11,500 feet, riding the Highway to the Sun, in Glacier NP, Montana, and visiting Ohio for our MD at Don's. All those miles and the tire preformed flawlessly! Time to see for myself, now that I have personnel experience with a car tire, what difference going back to a motorcycle tire will do for my bike. I read an excellent article recently in one of the Bike magazines regarding why one should not turn to the darkside. I bow my head to their wisdom and knowledge. My decision to leave the darkside is not based on this article though. My experience, with the car tire, just does not track with what they are saying. Leaving the darkside, at least for the life of one motorcycle tire, is my way of figuring out what is best for my bike. I ordered an Avon Venom this morning.
  2. OK, I know most folks are not to interested In AM Radio Reception on motorcycles. However: If you are, I have hit on a simple ( but cost a few bucks ) way to greatly improve AM Radio reception on the bike, and also cars. Being a Ham Radio Op, helps a little here. ( I'm also an antenna, "freek" in addition to a Motorcycle adict) Anyway, by modifying some Unused, Ham radio Antanna's I have come up with a greatly improved AM Antenna for the bike. If interested, PM me for the Details, if you are interested in an Antenna project, IF, better AM reception is of interest to you.
  3. I just got our "new" 2003 GW with 2007 Motor Trike Conversion home. What a fantastic 2700 mile ride! Love our RSV, but the GW trike is just that step above. Now the problem; when I use the turn signals both of them flash on the dash board like the emergency flashers are on. The front turn signals are fine the correct side flashes, but the entire back is messed up. Everything flashes, the volume of light put out by the rear lights is almost un-seeable and when apply the breaks the turn indicators on the dash light up. I've jacked up the bike and looked under it to see if I could see anything obvious (I know never that easy). The bike wasn't ridden much for about a year before I got it. I first thought of dirty contacts letting voltage through both sides of the switch, but now with the break lighting them up I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?
  4. Hi all, I just rejoined this forum. I bought a brand X bike and started hanging out on a HD forum. Anyway, my little brother bought a Royal Star and I thought I would re-join since he'll probably show up here eventually. My question is, I changed my profile pic to one with my current bike in it, but it doesn't show up when I post a comment. It's still showing my old picture. What am I doing wrong?
  5. So I went on a 6 mile RT with my '88 VR to gas up the bike, and when I got back, the engine was running a little rough, saw no wet spot clue under the bike, so I removed the engine side covers to tamper with the pilot screws to see what happens. On 3 carbs, turning the pilot screw in all the way caused the engine to slow to almost stop, but the 4th made no difference. That meant the one carb was getting fuel from somehwere else. So I shut off the engine and heard a soft Darth Vader type labored breathing sound. Sound did not quit, so I removed the air filter and looking down the intake with a flashlight saw carb in question all wet, and could watch fuel spraying from the needle jet with each of the breathing sounds! What the...? Never experienced this before in 45 years wrenching. Decided to drain the fuel bowl and ran the fuel pump to pressure flush through the inlet valve, and sure enough, there was a small particle that came out. Reassembled and started the bike, sync'd the carbs and adjusted the pilots, and the bike idles fine once again. Just can't figure out what caused the pulsing breathing sounds that lasted so long, as there seems no vacuum source with the engine off. Maybe engine heat was vaporizing some fuel for the pressure cycled release and resulting fuel spraying. BTW, new fuel filter installed a week ago, so the particle likely came from the wrenching environment. I guess it pays to flush everything when fooling with the fuel system. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Venture

  7. This has probably been covered before, but I'd be darned I was able to find it during a search. Here's my problem. This just started on my 83'. I was driving down the road. Nothing special, just normal driving, when all of a sudden everything drops. Tack, engine, everything. Just like I'd hit the "kill switch". I stopped the bike and turned the key on and off, and the bike fired right up. I thought strange! But drove on down the road. Stopped to get some gas. When I turned the key to start the bike again, everything powered on...but when I hit the starter button...NOTHING!! Now keep in mind that all the lights on the dash are on. I can hear the gas pump do its thing. I checked all the fuses (yes its an old fuse box) but they were all good. I have a Delka (sp?) battery in the bike. I've installed the heavier battery cables too. New spark plugs also. Yes, I have plenty of gas. I then kept wiggling the "Kill switch" back and forth hoping that this would make a difference. (This is were I read something on the forum, but can't find the article now) Still nothing worked. I then put the kick stand up and down a few times hoing that maybe that would make a difference. Well, long story short...the bike finally turned over. I don't know exactly what worked though. So any ideas would be great! I'm a bit scared to take her out for a ride again, since I felt like I was lucky to get her home. I've since went back out to the garage and she's still starting OK. But that's a pretty scary feeling not even getting a buzz or anything. Thanks, Jack
  8. I had a real shock today. I have a 2006 RSTD and I do 95% of my riding with no windshield. That was one of the reasons I got it. I like the bare cruiser look most of the time. Today I knew I was going to be doing a straight highway run, so I thought I would put the shield on, and take a nice easy ride. Well, I have put almost 1000 K on the bike in the last 3 days, and just like last year, I was getting about 280 - 300 KM out of a tank. Well, today on my ride I filled up, reset my fuel odometer on my Garmin 550 as usual and reset my low fuel indicator. 170 KM later, my Garmin shows just under half tank, and my fuel gauge on the bike is on low fuel indicator again. This is the worst fuel economy I have had since the bike was new. Now, I was also going faster than my normal rides, where I generally stick to the back roads, and keep it between 80 and 90 KM/H. I had the cruise set at 114 (by garmin, 122 by speedo) my first thought was that the windscreen caused this horrible mileage. I will have to check it again, with the windscreen off. I know that I rode with the windscreen on last year to North bay, which is about 5 hours, and I do not recall the mileage being that bad, but again, most of the highways are 80 KM/h limit, where I do 90ish. Anyone else found this kind of bad mileage with the windscreen?
  9. Please.. if you haven't listed your bike year etc under your site nickname, please do. So many ask and answer questions without showing what bike, yea,r generation etc that they have. You then have to go to their profile to see what bike they are talking about. Rant off... thanks.
  10. Big Bob and I went out this evening to fill up the bikes to be ready for the morning lift off. Guess who's bike won't run? Yep...mine! Fuel pump for sure. Tried all the tricks banging on it, key off and on, nothing no noise just nothing. It does get hot though when we try and start the bike up. BTW the bike will run a little until the gas is gone from the carbs. We have been out and about trying to get an after market one. The good stores are closed...ie NAPA etc. So tomorrow AM I am heading the bike shops and see if they have something lying around I can use of hit those other stores. Our Yamaha dealer folded up two months ago...perfect huh.
  11. well here it is, got home this a.m. from our dealer valve adjustment in southern indiana. Lets start with obermyer yamaha being a first class operation, rolled into town "jasper" on thurs. p.m to drop off bike and get to the hotel. I was told they would have a loaner bike available and they did, a 2008 star raider with only 4500 miles more on that later. any way my 2005 rsv with 45,000 miles was in the shop for its 1ST valve check and it only had "one" valve out of spec. #4 inside intake was tight and swapped a 280 for a 275 and that was it. I was thinking there would be 3 or 4 outta spec but was happy with only one. 4 fresh plugs and new coolant and it was ready to go and only paid $320 which to me is a good deal considering a loaner bike for a day and a half. I usually never go to a dealer mech. but this one just did not sound like a good time and besides we made it a mini vacation, saw some sights and did a train ride, it was all good. If you ever get a chance to stop in jasper i recomend it, nice town with good people and a great yamaha dealer. I'm in the market for a smallish crotch rocket for commuting to work and I will buy it at obermyers !!!
  12. I had a loaner bike this week a 2008 star raider and let me say this is a great looking bike but thats where the compliments from me end. My girl and i had it for a day and a half and only rode it for 2 hours cause that bike is torture on a old spoiled man like myself. If i was 20 yrs younger I would have been all over it but that day is gone, the forward controls are way too forward feels like i was hanging on a jungle jim and the feet were in a birthing stirrups..lol any way with the girl complaing of a sore butt and my shoulders screaming we parked it and waited for our beloved venture to be finished at the shop. I love that bike "venture".
  13. I am reviewing the list of what items are necessary to bring with the bike (1st gen Venture) and for the bike when I go on road trips, that are not already included like fuses. My list includes: Tire repair kit, plugs and patches Tire inflator pump/compressor Tire guage Universal fit tire tube, for when tire can't be plug repaired Tool Kit Extra Spark Plug 1 Qt motor oil Shop towel (rags) Spare turn and stop bulbs Extra TCI unit Rain gear, poncho Seat towel Winshield cleaning solution Water bottle Emergency food rations Flashlight Multi-purpose Leatherman tool Cell phone w/ charger Credit Card Any other suggestions? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83, 88 Venture
  14. Early last spring, I joined the Gold Wing Road Riders Association since I had found myself hanging out and riding with the local chapter guys on a regular basis. We have a lot of fun and they don't care what you're riding as long as you're riding. Last month, while riding my '94 Triumph, an electrical problem stalled the bike (Can you believe it? An electrical problem on an English bike!!) and I had to pull over. As I couldn't diagnose the problem just then, I decided to use my new Honda roadside rescue service, included in my membership fee. I hadn't noticed when I joined up, but it turns out they will only take your bike to a repair shop ... they won't take it to your home! Now I know they have their reasons, but this put me in a difficult position. The nearest bike shop that I thought might even be willing to look at a Triumph (Independent shop - not a dealer) was 15 miles away while my house was about 6 miles away. The nearest Triumph dealer was 50 miles away. But, what was worse, it was nearly 8 at night which meant the shops were closed. I would have had to leave my bike parked in front of the store and in both cases, in an area that was, well, not exactly a high class area. Putting it bluntly, to have left the bike there would have meant about a 90% chance of severe vandalism or outright theft. And then, once the details would have come out, I wonder if the insurance company would have been willing to pay. Anyway, after talking with the rep and having him check with his supervisor, I gave up and called the C.A.A. (Canadian equivalent of the A.A.A.) since I have the "plus" membership. They were there in 20 minutes with a nice covered trailer with a low load floor, a wheel chock at the front and tie down straps. We were loaded up and ready to roll in 5 minutes and they took me straight home and helped me get the bike into my garage. So, I'm not knocking the Honda Rescue Service, as I'm sure they have good reasons for operating as they do, but if anyone is thinking of joining the club, remember this fact. You may still need another service in some cases. Then again, they may have heard of my little stunt at a local A&W bike night when a young guy asked me what the letters "GWRRA" on my crest, stood for. I said "Oh I'm with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association" then tipping my Yamaha cap, I added, "Brought to you by Yamaha." Did I mention the chapter president was in line directly in front of me when I said that? Andy
  15. Does anybody know what other year rear end will work in a 87 first gen? I have not taken the bike apart yet but from what i have read here it sounds like a rear end nut issuse.
  16. I've been watching this bike on Craigslist for weeks. Price keeps dropping. Is it a good deal? http://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/mcy/3186484375.html Not like I need another bike!
  17. New to the forum and starting a new project. I scored this beat 87' Venture and decided I was gonna chop it and see what I can come up with. I like the motor, if I can get it in good running order and want something mean and powerful, making babies cry and that sort of thing. Probably out of place in this forum but I thought what the hell. Lots of crazy crap on this bike including a car battery in the right bag connected with amplifier wiring. Pictures of the bike:
  18. I just talked to my insurance agent (Allstate) and she told me that the bike wouldn't be covered when we tow a trail. Has anyone else had this issue?
  19. I wanted to take the time to thank one of the Venture Riders on this site. For the past 2.5 months he has patiently and meticulously worked to restore a Salvaged 99 RSV that I bought 2 years ago. I bought this bike thinking it would be a “winter project” but really underestimated the amount of work and attention to detail it would take to get it in tip top condition. A little about me....I am a perfectionist. If I am not confident that something can be done to perfection I will hold off until I am prepared to perform to that degree. I will not start something and say “oh that's no big deal, or that's not quite right but it will do” After realizing that this restoration was above my skill level, it sat in my garage until shortly after I joined this site and found WillBill1. Bill Little aka WillBill1 lives north of Charlotte, NC. What attracted me to Bill was the fact the he is a retire engineer, skilled mechanic, and rides what we ride. What more could you ask for? I told home my bike and he was confident that he could make it perfect and I knew after only a short while of speaking to him that he would treat my bike as his own- no shortcuts would be taken. I've included some pics of my bike before and after but that only tells a small piece of the story. The PO of my bike totaled it back in 2003 or 2004 and his well meaning son in law tried to put it back together, doing more harm that good. He used common nuts and bolts from Lowes or Home Depot, left lots of stuff off the bike and just all around screwed the bike up. Bill painstakingly combed over my bike for hours with part diagrams checking off every single nut and bolt that was missing or needed to be replaced and every electrical connection that needed to be repaired. He then got all the maintenance up to date and began doing some of the modifications we have here on our site. He installed a MP3 port next to my powerjack on the inner fairing. He installed my new passing lights and light bar, took out my cassette player and installed gauges, put the Harley License Plate Frame with additional brake lights on the back, raised my forks up in the triple trees to lower the front end and installed and Baron's Lowering Kit for the rear. Keep in mind while doing all this he would would find other little things that needed attention and fix those things as well. He found over 200 parts that were missing from the bike or need to be replaced.....that's attention to detail. I could go on and on about the work that Bill did. He was simply amazing. Not once did he complain about everything he ran into and not once did he raise the price on me that we had agreed to, which by the way was an unbelievable price. I had the pleasure of working with him some on this project and let me tell you, it was obvious he was an engineer. There were a few times that I said to myself “Holy Cow I would have never figured that out”, it was a real joy watching him at work. I hope that you guys will reach out to him if you ever feel you're in to deep and need help. I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he can handle anything that comes his way. You can find him in the member vendors section..... http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=36 Bill, if you are reading this.....Thank You so much, if there is anything I can ever help you with....don't hesitate to call. You're a great guy, I would've never been able to do what you so skilfully did. Thanks again......Matt
  20. Rode my 1st gen to work today, i'ts first long ride and noticed a load whine every time i got off the gas. Fast or slow clutch in or out. Sounds like i'ts coming from the left side. The bike runs and shifts very good except for this whine. Goes away while on the gas. Anybody had this issuse?
  21. Anyone have an approximate idea how much value of a bike is gained or lost for every 10,000 miles on the speedo? For example a 1991 VR with 10,000 miles vs one with 50,000 miles. And assuming if the two VR are identical in accessories and upgrades.
  22. I am in need of a member living in the Shreveport area to help me out if at all possible. I have found a trike there and would like someone to check it out for me if possible. I dont know the exact address in Shreveport but I will be talking to the owner tonite and find out when and where it will be possible to see the bike.
  23. I bought a 2008 rsv a couple of weeks ago, had always been a GW rider until now. The problem is at speeds above 55 mph the bike seems unstable, similar to wind buffeting but in a zero wind condition. I've considered tires (it still has the original 404's) or loose steering head, just not sure. The bike only has 2075 miles on it and the previous owner had the 400 mile check preformed. Any ideas?
  24. Does anyone have a set of these that you would be willing to sell and could someone post pictures or email me Pictures of what they look like on the bike? Thanks!!
  25. Something is wrong with my fuel gauge readings on my '06 Midnight Venture. I had the bike serviced by my local Yamaha Dealer. New plugs etc so the tank had to come off. (First Time Ever) I drove the bike for a few days after getting it back. The fuel gauge was on 1 bar left and the Low Fuel Warning Indicator came on. Always used to come on with 2 bars on the fuel gauge. Anyway, I pulled over and switched the petcock to reserve. I got about 2 miles and the bike ran out of gas. Never did that before. Got some gas from a generous nearby homeowner then filled the tank at the nearest gas station. Ran the tank down over the next few days and the indicator came on when I reached 2 bars on the fuel gauge. I pulled into a gas station not very far away (maybe 2 miles). Filled the tank and it only took 4 gallons.??? Being very confused, I decided to take the bike back to the dealer to have them check it out. $103.00 later, they said that nothing was wrong and everything worked as it should. This particular would never admit to anything as I have found out from other riders. I have ridden the bike bike for several months now not really sure how much is in my tank except when it's first filled. I went on a long ride through the mountains this past weekend with my main squeeze. I have to say it was beautiful. On the way home the Fuel Indicator light came on and 2 bars on the gauge, so I pulled into a gas station and filled it up. It only took 3 1/2 gallons. Huh? Anybody else run into this? The local dealer is not the place I want to take it to ever again. How many bars do you people have left on your gauge when your Low Fuel Indicator comes on? How much fuel does it take to refill your tank if you refill immediately once you see the indicator? Is there a way to replace the gauge in the tank? Thanks.
