  1. Ok I've looked thru the site here, the shop manual, and even checked out the bike short of actually stripping parts off of it. I've seen the wires coming out of the stator cover and see the plug for the regulator but where those go between the two is a mystery. I'm looking for that white connector ya all talk about going bad. Seeing as my bike is 6 years old I thought it'd be a good time to check it. Don't have any problems now but don't want any supprises down the road either. Larry
  2. Need to get to fuse panel. The inner cowling screw near the brake pedal just turns with no in or out movement no matter which way I turn screw.. Pressure against the cowling plastic doesn't help. Any trick to this? Seems like threads or nut? behind this is fubar. First time for me to try and remove. I guessing it has been off before since middle bottom push screw is missing. Wally
  3. I guess I’ll begin by introducing myself. I’m Lee Winders and live in the small town of Mansfield, Tn. A few months ago I purchased an ’83 VR. The motorcycle had been setting up for quite some time. The man I bought it from hadn’t ridden it very much. He bought it from someone that I think had let it set up as well. The man I bought it from said the last time he rode it, it quit and he was unable to get it to run again. He said it acted like it was not getting gas. He had shown me the bike about a year ago and I told him if he ever wanted to get rid of it to let me know. He called me a few months ago and asked if I would give $200.00 for it. Well I figured it would be worth it if only for parts. I got it home and the first thing I did was remove the carbs. They were a mess to say the least. I went through and cleaned them as well as I could. I removed the gas tank and drained it. I replaced the fuel lines and filter on the tank side of the fuel pump. I still have the original fuel line on the pressure side. By the way, the bike has 19,000 miles on it. I put fresh gas in it and tried to start it. After about 10 minutes of messing with it, it finally hit. It will only run when fully choked. And then it runs very rough. I’m sure the carbs are way out of adjustment. I also notice the when trying to crank it, one of the carbs didn’t have any suction at all. Possibly a stuck valve. I don’t have the air box on it at this time and I’m sure this would also affect the way it runs. There is a lot of other work that needs to be done on the bike but first I want to know that the engine is ok. I really don’t think there is anything seriously wrong with the bike. It’s going to be a work in progress. I welcome all the help I can get
  4. Rocket is on a Cross Continent trip with a friend. They are on an 83 and 86 venture pulling an Aluma trailer, if you see them give them a thumbs up! I hope they have a good time and a safe trip. If anyone wants to follow them on their tour, here is the link to Pauls Spot locator. http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0dW2uviFRmfVBIi65A9vRaQ1osJHe2jOq Brian
  5. :fingers-crossed-emoThe rear brakes are bled and are working pretty good.I seem to still have to pump them once to get super braking, but just hiting them does the job.I did the I.V. bottle trick I'd seen here long ago...I bookmark the problems I'd think I might be running into. Thanks to all that gave real good advice. Now I seem to have run into another problem.Keep in mind that I haven't rode this bike regularly,I usually rode the 89. I'd take the 84 out on occation ..maybe 4/5 times for a 30 mi. ride. Now, once it gets warmed up, it wants to stall at stops. It doesn't do it all the time. The last time I had it warmed up,I'd gotten back home an in the garage and it stalled there.I started it back up and went to rev it up and it wanted to shut off like it was out of gas each time I cracked the throttle. At idle I cracked the throttle a couple of times and each time it wanted to stop. As long as I kept it above 2000RPM it wouldn't bog down when the throttle was cracked.I've run seafoam thru it( half a can per tank) and still does it. Any advice on what might be the problem?

  7. Hello, I am new to this site and I just recently purchased a 2005 Royal Star Midnight Venture. My issue is that after riding for a little time, the bike seems hard to get into neutral. Does anyone know what could cause this problem? Thanks in advance for any advise.
  8. Hi all! I have a really dumb question and I know it touches on my post yesterday about relays and driving lights but at the same time it is separate. Forum monitor please forgive me. I bought a relay and all of the parts I need to put a relay in. I printed a couple of different posts that had schematics and instructions. I purchased a simply on off push button type switch that is more robust than the one that comes with the Yamaha light kit. I have a couple of questions; (1) what is the difference between a simple switch that has two connect points and one that has three? Also I want to hook my lights up so they are on all the time whether I am using low or high beam. The official Yamaha instructions says" On all the time: Splice red power lead to red w/Yellow stripe lead (in natural nylon multi connector) My assumption is that what they are referring to is what the instruction I have read call "Switched Power" and that one wire goes from here to one terminal on the switch and one wire goes from terminal 86 of the relay on the coil side to the other connect point on the switch. Sorry, schematics confuse me. My apologies for the dumb question. Any help is appreciated Chris in Red Deer
  9. Made it back home early this afternoon with lots of good memories. Will post picks and impressions a little later. Hope everyone who attended had a great time....
  10. THANKS to Condor, Lone Eagle, and all the others responsible for organizing the BEST rally I've ever attended..!!!! We had such a great time getting to know some of the attendees. Quite a few we didn't get to know well, but you know how it is when you get sat down & get to shootin the $hI+ with somebody & don't get around. We were going to take a short ride to Cook City the 1st day, but I missed the turn & we ended up in Belfry, so we went to Red Lodge via the "Beartooth Highway", the #1 rated motorcycle ride in the US. It was beautiful & really fun to ride. Thanks to Lori for posting 20 photos that I reposted on my Facebook page. If you want to see them go to Facebook & friend me & you can look at the photos. Babe got into town about 7 & had dinner @ Adriano's. Great food Second day we just kind of vegged & rested. Babe & I went to the dinner & show @ Cody Cattle Co. & it was really a good show. Great music & entertainment. Home to Skyline for nightly bullfest in front of 51/52 till the we hours. Best time to get to know somebody when they've had a few libations. Fun stories from FUN people. Day 3 Mark & Lee, Babe & I escorted Lori as far as Thermopolis as she had to go home early. We took a short dip in the hot spring water. Supposed to be therapudic & give everlasting youth. I'd better bottle some of that. Had a really nice ride back through Greybull & then back to Cody. Nice farm country where they grow nearly all the Moravian Barley for the Coors beer. Attended the Banquet @ the Holiday. Sounds like most of the banquets have been outside in a parking lot before. Thanks for the upgrade Lone Eagle or whoever upgraded this party to the Holiday, IT WAS WONDERFUL, & the food was mountainrific! For those of you not attending you wouldn't believe the 6 table of raffle gifts this group had put together. Must have been $20,000 worth of loot. NICE JOB TO THE BOARD OR WHOEVER PUT THIS PARTY TOGETHER!!!!! Last day has to come at the end of every trip. Nice ride with Mark & Lee & Babe in the Tahoe to Shoshone, then Babe broke off toward Casper & we sent south to Rawlins. Great ride with some spectacular views & some pretty boring highway together. Mark & Lee broke off @ Walcott Junction to visit their daughter in Saratoga. I went on through Laramie & Fort Collins to Fort Morgan to visit with a long time friend & biker buddy. Day 4 rode with Richard B back to Greeley to go to cardiologist for my 6 month checkup since my heart attack. GREAT REPORT..!!!! Dr. Lin Wang Dong (no joke, that's his name) said he wishes he had 10 more patients with recovery like mine. Just what i wanted to hear. Met up with Richard again & rode to Ft Collins & had lunch @ Hooters next to Thunder Mtn Harley. Thanks for being such a GREAT friend Richard!! Got on the scoot & headed home with a heavy heart that the trip was about to end, But then I thought about Babe home alone & I ran up it to 85 & got home as quick as I could. Love To You'all, It Was a Great Time, Graderman46 & Babe & PS I may ask to change my handle to Patrolman46. It's the same thing just different time.
  11. For almost a year my battery goes down after a couple of days of not riding. I have added running lights, led tail lights, air horn, auxilary plug in and maybe a couple more items over time. I don't know whats drawing the battery down and an electrician I ain't. How can I test to see what is causing this problem?
  12. I have been pondering selling my venture. My wife is back to the every once and a while employment and I have a couple bills that need caught up, my truck needs some work and I do not have the time to take care of it the way I should. I love the bike, but when it sits two weeks cause I do not have time to replace a burned out headlight bulb it makes me wonder. On the other hand I have gotten it to where it gets at least upper 30's for mpg, fixed the wobble, replaced the fuel pump (that is why it was getting hard to start) and done numerous other things to it. Nuw in all reality I do have a family to take care of, I love them more than the bike. So should I sell it? I am terrified that if I sell it it would end up in a parts dealers hands. Shaun
  13. It was great riding the bike today! It has been a while so the day was absolutely perfect! We got to meet Bumblebee this morning. Kevin had other commitments so could not ride up to Charlotte with us. Hopefully next time he can! I bet you can't guess what color his bike is! Keith, one of the guys who works with George, rode up with us and had a great time meeting the guys! Lunch was great at McCoy's, it is definitely a place to keep in mind to eat when we are in Charlotte! We stopped at McLeod Farms on the way home to get peaches and a peach enchilada but the line was so long I had to be satisfied with a picture to prove that we were there! Thanks Mark for putting this together! It was good seeing everyone! http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y262/venturerider/Sleeperhawks%20Mechanic%2020110716%20Charlotte%20ME/#!cpZZ1QQtppZZ20
  14. (trunk..typo) Went out to wire up the trailer pigtail and do some antena work this morning, and when I removed the trunk to get at the CB I found that the left front bracket was busted off completely. The break was rusted up pretty good so it probably happened before I bought it. Anyway... Anyone have a rack left over from a trike conversion or from a trunk mod?? I can get by for the time being with just the 3 attachment points, but it would be nice to replace the whole rack. BTW its ugly rusted too, or I'd take it down to the muffler shop and have it rewelded....
  15. While prepping the bike for Cody I noticed that the steering was very loose. Push the bars from the center and they would bounce off the stop 2-3 inches. I didn't feel any play but the bounce concerns me. How much of a hassel and time does it take to adjust the steering head? If it's a bunch I'll wait until getting back from Cody.
  16. Are there ANY US members near the east end of Lake Ontario willing to help me out. I'm thinking I want to leave my bike trailer at your place for a couple of weeks, during which time I will take it apart. Then I will import trailer "parts" in 2 different trips. Anybody willing to help?
  17. Finally clear for take off. Ready for Vogel. Just curios, does anybody have room, bed or floor to share at Vogel? I promise to behave. Last time park ranger have to shut down wild party. Esther Williams
  18. Heading to Montreal today for the annual BRP world dealer meeting and festivities for the next 8 days. I'm especially looking forward to spending some time on a Can Am Roadster to see how it rides versus a traditional trike, as well as riding some of the new Victory models. The weather is supposed to be pretty good, so I think the rides will be nice. Wish I had the time to do a Venture road trip up there, but I'm stuck with Delta airlines instead. I'll let y'all know what I think of their new equipment. Au revois.....
  19. Though she has dubbed it the "baby beast", my girlfriend has joined the world of the two-wheelers on her very own Vino 125. We have been seeing each other for a few years now and I felt that I wanted to give her something special for Christmas (the one that just past). She enjoys riding passenger on my RSTD, but I knew that she is more of a driver. After we came back from a trip to Paris for 2 weeks and having seen her have the dreamy eyes at the sight of many 'cute' Vespa scooters and comments like "ohh I wish I had one! Wouldn't it be great?" I felt that I wanted to make her wish come true. So back in September 2010 I started to look around for used scooters. I was shocked to find that the price of a used Vespa was too high, and also the amount of knock off/fake Vespa's was kind of dodgy. But then I started to find that Yamaha had a retro-looking scooter called the Vino, and the used prices were much more affordable. Then I stumbled on to a deal-and-a-half for a Vino 125cc for $400. It has a bigger engine than the 50cc scooters which can barely do 45mph, so I felt that this was a much safer bike to go with. The only catch was that this scoot was pretty roughed up with high mileage, given the engine size, of 14,500 km. All of the body panels were pretty scratched up with huge gouges on the front fender and front panel. The tires were shot, torn seat, very dirt, poorly maintained, but it seemed to run. So I bought the Yamaha Vino and decided that I would transform it into a 'cute' scooter. In the next few months before Christmas I pulled the entire buggy apart, fixed up all of the panels, repainted them, reupholstered the seat with new marine grade vinyl, replaced all of the fluids, cleaned the entire engine compartment (there was an unbelievable amount of dust/sand in there), added chrome trim to the panels, cleaned the carbs and replaced the tires with new white walls,,, all under her nose. I almost got caught a few times, but I was lucky every time to keep it a secret. I managed to turn the ugly ducking into a beautiful looking machine. Well, on to Christmas Day.. I had to bring the scoot to her grandparents house and I only had one way to take it there. No! I did not drive it in the freezing cold and snow. I can actually fit it in the trunk of my Chevy hatchback. Try doing that with a Royal Star! So I pull into a school parking lot a few blocks away and unload the little thing. I put my gifts for the rest of the family in the foot area and under the seat (lots of storage under there!) and put the key in the ignition. Hit the started,, and, nothing. Stranded there with the this beautiful..paperweight. Well fortunately I got her going after 10 minutes - god bless this machine that it also has a kick starter as well! I rode the scoot a few blocks down and parked it right in front of her grandparents door. I let myself in the house and was just in time for the present opening. Well I was pretty excited and nervous about the gift, but was also very cold since riding a scoot even a few blocks in -15C weather is enough to chill anyone right down. When it came time for me to give her my gift, I gave her a fake present (empty box with a card in it). The card instructed her to grab a coat and head outside. She was very curious and confused, but when she saw her new scooter she was so excited. She was completely caught by surprise and was so excited. She kept looking at it from the window throughout the day, unfortunately it was winter and she couldn't even take it out for a ride. So fast forward a few months and she got her motorcycle license, as you must get a full motorcycle license for any vehicle over 50cc. Although she was kind of intimidated by the motorcycle she had to learn on at the course, she did enjoy it. She was the best student in the class as she just seemed to do things naturally. We had the license and insurance completed and it was time to ride. She was nervous on the roads at first but she is absolutely LOVING her little beast. We went on a few riders where I would follow on my RSTD and she looked like a natural. Now I know that there is so much talk about when you get a motorcycle you will end up spending even more on the accessories, well the same is true with the scooter world. So far she got a really nice retro helmet, a beautiful stylist Italian scooter trench coat with hidden armor (just looks like a stylist jacket), a wicker basket for the back of the scoot, new chrome turn signals, a stereo system with an ipod near the front foot area, and a soon to arrive 150cc engine upgrade kit that is 'bolt on'. I keep joking with her that it looks like a baby Venture with all this stuff on it. She is loving it, but I just recently noticed an interesting and perhaps scary incident where I went to the garage and noticed that she was sitting on my RSTD playing around with the controls... hmmm.... Anyways, I thought that I'd share a few things with you guys, maybe you might consider trading in your Ventures for the Baby Model... New White Wall Tires - $30 each Monthly Insurance - $26 (first time rider, less after 2 years) Gas Fillup - $4 Gas MPG - 85~100 Now I know it doesn't compare to the Cadillac's that we ride, but after taking this thing out a few times I can tell you that it is a blast! Before Shot - The damage and torn seat is not visible from this angle. Clever photography by the seller. http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/before02.jpg Christmas Day and one happy new Yamaha owner! http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03771.jpg Front shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03720.jpg Side shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03722.jpg Other side shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03726.jpg Rear end shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03734.jpg Front end shot http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03733.jpg Handle bars http://i924.photobucket.com/albums/ad85/phertwo/Baby%20Yamaha/DSC03730.jpg
  20. Has anyone tried cutting the bottom of an RSV windshield and then slotting and drilling new mounting holes? I like this Idea since I think I would have problems getting such a smooth curve cutting the top portion and it would bother me every time I looked at it. Seems possible - potential issues. Limits fine tuning of height after the first cut so I had better get the height I want first time. I'm thinking 3" shorter for me but will check sight line over top with some scotch tape and inch marks. Bottom area of windshield will be slightly wider but seems there is enough clearance in the slot it fits into to accept the wider width. Anything else?
  21. Well I lasted exactly 2 days back to work after my bout of Pneumonia before I had to go back to the E/R, this time the chest pains were so, so bad, we thought it was the big one, I have never had pain so excrutiating ever before, so back we went to the ER. This time things didnt go as smoothly as the last time, got there just before the changing of shifts and to complicate matters, they started looking at all the results from my last visit one week ago and were ready to discharge me before the even did chest x-rays and had all the blood tested. We,Charlene and I told them I havent even had any meds yet, how can you discharge me with all this pain and trouble breathing. They said all the test were good and that the xrays ............Wrong I told them that they haven't done one damn thing yet, they were looking at old test. Then another doctor came in and started all over again. Take more blood since the other was still sitting on the cart, it went bad. Didnt like this one either, he seemed to be in a hurry to get rid of me till Charlene started asking it they tested for this and that, he left and came back later and said he did as she asked and everything looked good. It wasnt my heart, or my gall bladder or any other organ, no blood clot in the lungs or a collasped lung. What I had was still Pneumonia complicated by plusiary What really mad me mad is all they did for me was give me a bunch of pain killers to stop the pain but no antibiotics by IV like they did last time.......just more prescriptions and no work, so now I go back to my Dr. on Monday and see what they say. Life stinks right now, I am so tired of being sick, I actually miss work, and I cant work on the 1st gen right now, and time is running out to get it ready by Vogel. End of Rant............
  22. Just curious...mostly from people that have had this done at the dealer (stealer). They also changed out a back tire at the same time... So what is a customary charge at a DEALER for this service? I'm only interested in what was charged for the swing arm bearing lube. Thanks.
  23. Hi All Well monday went to Bongobobs had a great time. Nice ride home this mornning is were the story starts. I have been building a deck at home and it has been going well. Today I had one hand rail left to put on so Christy and I made all the cuts and put the hand rail into place. It looked great. Christy went in to get ready for work and I stayed working on the blocks to hold the bottom of the rails. I was useing the table saw to cut the blocks. Well I got my finger in the way of the blade. Oh my god the saw went into the end of my finger about 1 inch. I hit the ground holding it. So I went into the house to tell Christy I just about made it to the sink when pain really set in down on my knees in frount of the sink. I had Christy call the ambulance I was dizzy and feelling sick. Funny Ive pulled all kinds of other people out of wrecks that were all messed up never bothered me but my own blood really makes me sick. So after 7 stitches in the finger Im back home with some time off work. Man this sucks and the deck is still not done. You can bet I will be more careful next time I get the table saw out. Bull463
  24. Hi Everyone - This is my first time here and I am from Woodbury, MN. Some guys on the Venture Rider's Facebook page told me there are some brilliant people here. Has anyone else had problems with their Royal Star shooting gas out of the carbs when it comes out of winter storage? I bought my 2006 RSTD brand new in 2008 and this has happened to me 2 times in 3 years! Last time it cost me $500 to have the carbs cleaned out. I followed the storage-prep instructions to a T. Very frustrating. What do I need to do to get it road-ready again. I'm not mechanically inclined and I am very disturbed at the thought of having to spend $500 for the 2nd time in 3 years to solve the problem. Thanks! Mike
  25. Yesterday, my wife and I were talking about the International Rally in Cody. It is really a lot sooner than you think. I hope that all of you are thinking about and making plans to attend. We are excited about it because neither of us have ever spent any time in that area and there is so much history to see there. It is going to be a GREAT time and I'm really surprised that more have not already signed up for it. Please start thinking about it and get registered ASAP. You are going to miss a great time if you aren't there.
