    finaly

well after all that.s been going on in my life this year with 3 deaths. and such and not able to ride and selling the old 1984 .im going in tomorrow to get this left knee replacement done. i know there is a lot of work to do to get the new knee up to snuff. lots of PT and i will end up in a place for 2 weeks after the operation. to help push me along. then im going to push the PT as much as i can stand. i have put away 3 grand for the purchase of a bike for next summer.im not going to go with a first gen as i just cant handle that big boy no more. thinking a vstar? not sure what size? and if i can snag one for that price? i did see a nice one for $2800 and i should have snapped on that one.1100cc and had 24000 miles but my daughter said to wait as she knew i would have taken that bike out before this operation. and either mess up my old knee or the new to me bike/ dang kids where they learn to be so smart? anyways asking for a little prayer that all goes well. and with luck and hard work i might be on the road again next summer. bike wise. sincerly oldgoat
  2. What is the top speed in each gear with factory rev limiter. I don't have a tach on this bike which is a bit aggravating. I've read a bit on here and people complain about the gearing on these bikes. Mine has plenty of power in 4th and 5th. If I'm over 50mph I'm in 5th. I am the third owner of this bike and it has 84000 miles on it. I believe it was still on the original clutch. It was in good shape when I replaced it with upgraded spring. I figured I'd do it all since I could get my Yamaha parts at cost. If i'm running over 60 I just twist my wrist to pass. I know it has K&N filters but don't know what else hase been done. It had some slash out pipes that I think were Highway Hawks but not sure because there were no markings on them. I found a set of factory pipes with tips with about 2000 miles on them. I put them on and like how the bike cruises at higher speeds now. With other pipes it sounded like the bike was overtaching. I haven't checked speed with gps yet but it buries the 120 on digital spedo and does it fairly quickly. I can bury in both 4th and 5th. I've learned it doesn't like to go around turns quite that fast though. Guess that is where my Magna spoiled me.
  3. Im hoping someone here can direct me as to what my problem is.Symptoms: Bike is 2000 mm been starting fine here at home, left last Wed. for road trip to Ark. Got as far as Amarillo Tx. Stopped for fuel would not start had to boost.Dealer just down the road battery 2 years old put new battery in no problem rest of day. Stopped at motel for the night could smell acid occasionally. Bike would not crank next morning. Put battery on charger (nearby gas station) started got as far as next fuel stop would not crank again.Called emergency road service, trailered bike to small bike shop,,in Conway Ark. By the way excellent people there. Warrentied batt. Installed another new batt. Cranks fine. Both places checked charging system said that it was. Made it to Judosinia Ark. Did not use bike till I left on Sat. Evey now and then I would get a whiff of acid. On last fuel stop on way home had to boost. Got home drove bike in garage would not crank.
  4. I have a 99 royal star deluxe and I want to get a front fairing for it and when I put my bike info in there is nothing for my year can someone please point me in the right directions and also what later years would fit
  5. A couple of weeks ago, Dingy posted some great 1st. Gen service bulletins. One of the items concerned the bolts that join the right lower section to the main frame. This is the section that you remove to pull the motor. While I was working on the 89 yesterday, I thught of this proceedure and decided to make sure mine were tight. I pulled the right footpeg bracket, and tightend the bolts.....mine were about 1/4-1/3 turn loose. I also checked the forward bolts, and 1 of them was a little loose. BTW, Yammie suggested that they'd be checked every time the bike was in for service. I didn't think the bolts were so loose that they'd cause a problem, but today I noticed that the bike seems to turn a bit better. Thanks Gary!! Frank D.
  6. I ride a 2007 RSTD. Bought it new and have loved the bike so far. My wife and I have been to several states enjoying this bike, and I am completely in love with the V4. Having said that, I have this constant thought in the back of my mind that I would like to get a full dresser. While I know I could buy a newer or new model Venture and be fine, I wonder if I should just spend a a considerably less amount and get a good low mileage clean maybe 2000 to 2007 model one. When I look at these bikes on the used market, they look like there is no difference, other than color, than the new ones. So, the reasoning is, why would I buy a newer year model when I could save quite a bit of money and get the exact same bike just a few years older. Is there something I don't know? Do the earlier 2nd Gen model years have less HP and Torque, or is there some kind of bug in the earlier ones that has been corrected since then? I don't want to get into a situation of buying a bike that has less performance than my RSTD does. Okay, here's the second part of this question. Is there a huge performance difference between the 1st Gens and 2nd Gens? I'm not completely sure I would consider a bike with the years on it that a 1st Gen would have, but I ran across a 1993 1st Gen yesterday here locally that is in pristine condition with 31K miles, and the guy said even though he loves the bike, he would probably take $3000-$3200 for it if I wanted to buy it. The 1st Gens just look more aggressive. They look like they would be a better performing bike in the turns and such. I know that I could just end the whole discussion by going and buying a brand new bike. I've test ridden several nice bikes (Victory CCT, Victory Vision, Kawi Voyager, GW, BMW 1600 GTL, Etc). I have the funding to go that route, but something just tells me to buy an older but very good bike and save the duckets. Plus I love the V4. Let the opinions and suggestions begin. Thanks, Lynn
  7. I was visiting a customer yesterday in Ohio and found out that she rides. She rides a very nice older and highly customized Harley Super Glide shovel head. Very nice bike. Now this lady is absolutely beautiful. Probably mid to late 30's based only upon the fact that she has an 18 year old daughter. Very sweet and fun lady. She told me a story about stopping by a local sandwich shop to pick up lunch to take back to her office. There was a new guy working behind the counter and he was going on and on about his new bike. Then the guy looked at her and said "yea, just picked up my new bike. Going to a meet this weekend. You should come by." She said that he went on and on trying to be really cool but then he screwed up. He told her "If you stop by, maybe I'll let you clean my bike". Oops.....very bad suggestion. There was a fairly good lunch crowd waiting by now and in front of all of them, the asked "what kind of bike did you buy". He replied that he had bought a brand new Harley Davidson Sportster. That was all she needed to know. Her reply to him was "Very nice, you will enjoy it. I actually started out on a girl's bike too". Game, set, match. She said that he had nothing else to say after that.
  8. Adjusted the one tight intake valve on my 89, and figured that seeing that the Tupperware was all off, I may as well check the carb diaphrams. I had small holes in 3 of them---my bike only has 58K miles on it. I looked up Sirius and found that they were out of stock on diaphrams until the end of the month. While doing searches here on this site, I came across Snagletooth's message about using Plasti coat to make a temporary repair. Home Depot carries Plasti coat, so this morning I followed Snagletooths' proceedure and this afternoon I re-installed the sealed diaphrams. In addition to the Tupperware, both heat shields (the ones that are over each valve cover) were out, so it was real easy to change the spark plugs. Heck, I also found an open plug cap. I ordered replacements, but I took the bad one apart and convinced it to work by cleaning everything up. The resistance is a bit high (the resistor itself reads high), but it'll work until the new ones get here. Then the fun began. I started the bike up, and it sounded good when you opened the throttle, but it idled badly and slowly. I checked the carb sync, and it was all over the place. I synced the carbs (both on the right side were almost completely closed) and I had to slow the idle speed down quite a bit. I also had to adjust the idle mixture screws. Now it's idleing great. Those holes in the diaphrams sure had an effect on how the bike idled. BTW, I had adjusted the carb sync in May, and it was idleing what I thought was OK before I started on the diaphrams. Tomorrow morning I'll put it all back together and if it's not raining like they predict, I'll take it for a ride.
  9. ok i do not ride a venture but i do work at a dealership, small one, like i am the only employee and the other folks own it. I have a weird issue with a venture that i cant figure out. even called yamaha and they seemed puzzled. what it does you can cruise around all day at in town speed and nothing will happen, you hop up to highway/ interstate speeds (70-80) and the bike dies, check engine lighgt blinks twice and then the bike comes back on, no set time period as to when it will do this, seems completely random. owner has removed radio stuff from the bike. I have no idea where to go next

    Bike Storage in Yuma Az

Anyone know of a place to store my Bike in Yuma Az.? Am planning to ride it down or ship it late in October from Halifax, to fly down and ride around there again this year.
  11. I found a decent looking one with only one sm crack online, but for $149 (and a future entire bike repaint), I'd like to know it will fit my 85 VR. It looks the same. Thanks!
  12. After getting putrid miles out of the Brickstones that the bike came with, and then slightly better out a set of Pirelli Rt66's, I then went with ME 880's. I now have 15K miles on them, and have been totally happy with them. The rear tire is right at ready to be replaced, but I swear there's another few thousand left in the front. Having said that, my question is, why do I see a fairly large number of folks bashing the Metzler ME880's, and instead recommending tires like Avon Venom, Dunlop E3's, and Michelin Commander II's? The reason I want to know is, if I'm fixin to buy knew tires before the 2 week trip we are taking in September, then I need to know why these other tires are so much better than the Metzler's. I might consider them if they are way better. It's not like the Metzler's we currently have are doing light duty either. Besides the weight of the bike, I'm a pretty good sized fella too (6'6" 300lbs), and my wife adds a bit at 130lbs. Just wondering.
  13. well I'm finally gonna do a valve adjustment at 45,000 miles. Taking the bike to a yamaha only dealer in southern indiana next week "120 miles away". Were dropping the bike off thurs. afternoon so thay can get started and picking it up sat. morning. went ahead and got a hotel for a couple days while they do the work, even getting a loaner bike for the 2 days "he said it sure won't be a venture lol". they seem like great folks and hopefully won't cost too much, $175 to check them and a bit more for the ones they have adjust. I could probably do it but don't feel like it. anyway keep ya posted on the results.
  14. I'm about to check the valves on my '05 Venture.Do I need to buy new valve cover gaskets or are they rubber reusable ones?I want to have everything I need before I tear into the bike because I'm doing it in a friends' garage.Anything else I will need? Thanks in advance for the help.
  15. Hello all, new to the forum and the cruiser world. I have been riding crotch rockets for all my life, but due to recent surgeries that is now over, and I can't be any happier. I MUST ride, I love it to death, and I am so happy to have a big ol cruiser now. It's a world of difference in comfort and style. Freebird said I shouldn't disclose my age though. I am now the proud owner of a 1996 RSTD. Got it for a great deal and the bike is flawless. But I have encountered an issue. I have been searching the forum and believe I have come to the r/r connections, but I just cleaned them and I am having the same issue. The problem I am having is that on occasion when I started the bike, the speedometer would bounce around and lights on the cluster would flash while revving it up in neutral, but would run at idle like the electricity is dying. From my previous ownership of bikes, I immediately ran out and bought a battery, charged it, slapped it in and same issue. Then listening closely every time I would cycle the key, I would hear the main relay, kind of "fizz" if you will. Searched the forums again, and determined that I needed to clean all the battery/ground connections. Did so, still same issue. So then I bought a new main relay, and replaced it. and everything was awesome for about 4-5 days, now the same issue. Every time I did something I could ride the bike for a day or 2 and then my little gremlin came back. Now I cannot ride it at all. . So anyone have an idea, I'd love to hear it. I have attached an image of my new love, also have attached a picture of my exhaust, anyone have any clue what type of pipes these are? The PO put them on, and I bought it from a dealership.
  16. Kind of sad today. Sold my 98 Magna V45 today to an 18 yr old kid. Hope he can handle it. Really liked that bike as it was fun to ride. It handled great and ate up Harleys. I bought my RSTD in June because it was a lot more comfortable riding two up. I have a thing for the V-4. Don't have time or room for both so the Magna lost out. Now I have more money to buy shiny things for new bike
  17. Could somebody tell me what j birds frist name is. I have to call him to do some pinstriping on my bike.
  18. Hey Don, I just noticed an ad that appearred on the web site below the list of friends in the left hand column on the website. My question is: How are these ads generated? Are they approved by the website or do they appear automatically because of related content on the internet? The reason I ask is because the ad that drew my attention was titled Conyers Area Bike Dealer and was an ad for a business that I am familiar with and have had dealings with Rockdale Cycles and Racing. All Bad. I have posted on this site before about this business in detail and about the $1,400 rip off nightmare I had with them on my 87VR when I first owned my bike. This experience was before I found this site. I will say that the only good thing that resulted from that experience with Rockdale Cycles was that it set up a set of circumstances that eventually led me to discover this site, the best thing that has happened to me since acquiring my 87VR. Since joining this site and the resulting knowledge and help obtained on the 1st Gens from the knowledgable members of the VentureRiders.org, and because of that bad experience with Rockdale Cycles I have adopted a policy that no one works on my bike except me and trusted VR.org friends. In retrospect I know that had it not been for VR.org I would not have been able to afford to keep, ride, work on and maintain my 87VR. There is no way I could have afforded to pay a shop much less pay for Yamaha OEM parts for all of the work that I (with some help from others on this site) have done to my bike over the past ten years. Being able to work on the bike due to all of the helpful knowledge obtained from the members of this site. I say all of that to say this: The $12.00 per year membership dues is the best investment I have ever made in my 87VR. You can trust the advice, knowledge, experience and people involved with this site. If you too, saw the ad and were considering doing business with Rockdale Cycles, don't you will probably end up regretting it. They call them stealers instead of dealers for a reason. But, I quess I'm preaching to the choir. Suggestion for new forum: "What Not to do, things, places and people to avoid"
  19. I had a chance to ride two up this weekend since I upgraded my clutch with kit from Skydoc. I synced my carbs with a vacuummate using the procedure I found on this site. My bike is running great now. Had a small backfire when decelerating. I found a set of factory pipes with tips that I put back on the bike. I think it had Highway hawks on it although I could find no markings on them. Sounding like my bike was over taching when going down the interstate at 80. Now it just purrs along. Ordered a Utopia backrest today after reading about them on here. Best 12 bucks I've spent.
  20. so i was going to the store left the stop light poped the hill and the bike started to die i had two lines still left on the gauge ok i thought that the gauge was wrong so i shake the bike with the fuel cap off couldnt hear anything so i call my son to bring me some gas still no luck it fired over and i checked the pipes 3 hot 1 cold then it died again again so my quistion is is it the fuel pump? if so i still have 1 1/2 months on my warranty and is there any other thing besides the fuel filter that i should be looking at? Thanks:sick:
  21. Weird problem today.key on no fuel pump noise. All lights radio electrical worked. Turned key off on couple times nothing.turned off ,waited then key on, click of a relay, fuel pump heard then bike started.. any ideas Fuel pump bailing?..relay need replacing?.... 2008rsv with 8000mi Thanks les
  22. I have an '07 Venture, 25k miles, stock engine/exhaust setup, carbs settings have never been modified (except being balanced a couple of years ago). A few days ago I changed the spark plugs and replaced the air filters for the first time. Instead of installing paper filters, I installed K&N filters. After putting the bike back together and taking it for a test ride, I noticed a (somewhat negative) performance difference. When accelerating through gears 1-4, or if I cruise around 40 MPH in 4th gear, there is an occasional sag. Overall, the bike still accelerates well, but the sag is more prevalent when holding a steady speed. Highway performance is good; cruising at highway speeds is smooth, and passing is no problem. Also, when decelerating, there is more popping, and an occasional backfire (when decelerating from highway speeds). The bike has never backfired before. Mileage is still around 40 MPG (I rode over 600 miles since the plugs/filters were changed). I thought the K&N filters were a direct replacement and no carb mods would need to have been made. Has anyone experienced this before? I still have the paper filters, and when I make time, I will put those back in and see if the performance goes back to the way it was. Any other suggestions on what I could check? Thanks!
  23. Hey everyone, great forum as always. This is a cool place. Tomorrow I'm finally leaving for my 5th Annual Ben Kilik Memorial Ride. I'm going to do 30 of these total. Anyway, it's a killer journey every year spanning at least 2 weeks. I have a link to my friends website that has a rough outline of the route. It would be great to see any and all of you anywhere along the way. http://www.paulstocum.com I write an extensive blog about it which I as yet haven't started. I've been bowled over by the extent of ripping the bike and trailer to pieces to paint, repair, maintain, upgrade etc. Man what a job! So I wanted to publicly thank everybody for their awesome advice. I delinked the brakes. R1 calipers, ditched antidives (thanks Skydoc!), stainless lines, Vmax rotors, EBC rear rotor, HH pads, Dunlop E3's, final dirve off 09' with 10k (gorgeous), windshield, upgraded driving lights (w/parade mode, my personal favorite!) new trailer tires and completely disassembled and painted black. The bike rides great. Hate the progs but maybe they'll mellow. Stops like mother! I swear I could lock up both wheels and send myself hurling. Dunlops totally rock. I'll put a link up to my extensive blog (not nearly as good as Jack Reipe but I can dream!) for anyone that's interested and if anybody wants to tag along it'd be great to see you! We tend to camp 2/3 of the time. Give a text or call. Thanks for all the invaluable advice. I'd be totally screwed otherwise! Cheers, John K
  24. So we stop for brunch in Hope, BC. This is a major cross-roads from the Vancouver Lower Mainland to the interior and all points north and east. It is a favourite stop for bikers, and there must have been forty bikes in the Home Restaurant parking lot. I was parked in a spot with three other bikes. While finishing the meal, one of the Coast Riders members who was outside rushed in and called to me. A Numpty in a truck had reversed into my bike. "I didn’t see the bike", he said. 40 bikes in the parking lot! Four bikes in the parking spot, and he hit the biggest! He didn't look! He must have walked past the bikes on his way to get into his truck. His tow bar engaged with the front fender, bending it onto the tire. He moved the bike back a foot (you could see the gouge in the pavement), and bent the kick stand, but the bike stayed up, and did not hit any of the others in the spot. We ended up removing the fender, and beat it into some sort of shape so that I could continue the ride. Thanks to another Biker in a truck who had the tools and experience to do that job! I am waiting to hear back from my insurance company, and get the bike FULLY checked out by the dealer... in case he bent something else. He did bend the wind deflector a bit, and scratched the right fork (quarter inch chip in the chrome. Looks minor, but I am concerned. The bike felt fine on the ride, but I am wondering whether there is anything else specific I should be looking for? Here's a [ame=http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150963511021784]video[/ame]!
  25. Coming off a 2000 Honda ACE Tourer for the last 3 1/2 years . (loved the bike) . Looked good lots of power. And was reliable. I put about 35000kms on in that time. Bike Had 80000 kms When I traded it in. I decided that which ever bike bought next would be new. So I priced the H-D Electra Glide looked at the Wing (for about 2 seconds) and decided to go with the Venture . Price and Warranty where major factors (price Wing) but when it came right down to it I know the Yamaha dealer And not only did he Take my bike but also my sled on trade. I went with the Venture because I ride two up alot. I wanted her to be comfortable so she would have nothing to complain about . haha . I actually signed the papers before i even sat on one because my dealer didnt have one in stock ! At this stage in life I decided that if I am going to make payments on something I may as well get something I really want (38). I have had the bike for about 3 weeks now and I have 4500 kms so far . Vacation for 2 weeks tho . I added the light bar the luggage rack and ........... LA chopper pipes. Yeah Yeah too loud too loud ( Remember Im 38 ) haha and gas cap cover . Most important addition was the Sirius radio. At first i was really nervous at slow speeds but some seat time and the 3 rules from "Ride like a Pro " and i feel more confident. But I KNOW I will someday drop this bike (its heavy haha ) i Thought i would need the lowering kit but ater reading all the reviews I am glad i didnt order one. So far I am very happy with my purchase I love the power it is very comfortable and most of all the wife is happy. I look forward to all the support and good information on here and i will do my best to help others on here as well. Thanks Jay:)
