  1. Can someone tell me how to adjust the headlight on my 1999 RSV? I know how to adjust it up and down, But need info on side to side. As of right now the head light is aimed more to the far left than normal. Also do I need to split the fairing to do this?
  2. ken

    Tail Light?

Is the tail light and signal light covers the same on all Royal star's
  3. On the subject of small bright lights to make ourselves more visible, here's some photos of the lights I'm using which I like very much. They are Canadian made, costs $70 a pair, and are rugged as heck. I have mine mounted on the engine guard just forward of the floorboards. I did not expect these to be bright enough to drown out the bike's larger highway lights and they don't. But what they DO well is light up the front of the bike and put down on the ground a bright swath of light around the front of the bike, and light up the front of the bike to make it more visible sideways at night. During the bright day light, the little lights really don't do much for drawing attention to themselves but they will catch the eye. Its when the daylight starts to fade is when you really appreciate what these lights can do. Fully visible at around 175' they reall draw attention to themselves and catch the eye. At sunset, cloudy days, these lights are bright! And this is what it's all about, making yourself as visible as possible for the doozy eyed cager who isn't paying attention out there. I've had other bikers follow me in to a coffee stop just to ask about the lights and even had car drivers comment on how bright and attention getting they are. Simple to mount with any style p-clamp (1 inch for the engine guard) and easier to wire up, I have mine on a handlebar mounted switch. These lights are bright enough that I flashed these lights at a car that cut me off and they pulled over right away, possibly thinking I was a cop bike? Dunno about that one but the look on the driver's face was priceless.. These lights, and the easy to install HID kit are available at http://canadiancruisercustomizing.com/ (note on photos: I have a sheep skin over the HID to block out the bright light on two photos. The red brake light is indeed that bright, and even brighter with the brake applied, from Custom Dynamics)
  4. so I got the modified headlight system (with the two bulbs) and i am installing this, aside from some broken tabs which needed fixing I get the thing in, tried a different RSL and re-soldered the CMU to get the high beam working. so far so good! I'm getting ready to install the other half of the front fairing when I discover the tail light, brake light and all my running lights are out (they are all LEDs) Zip, zilch, nada. first thought it was a busted fuse, not! The tail light fuse does get hotter then a firecracker though and next thing I know I look up and I have smoke coming from the CMU:headache:. there are four wrapped coils on the back and the TOP one on the left (fuel gauge side) has the clear coating melted off. any suggestions as to what might have happened? any ideas as to how to resolve this? anyone have a spare, working CMU laying around that they might want to part with? Do you deliver and can you do so today Thanks!
  5. Hi to all, I did some work on my forks and put it back together today all was working fine last night. Now i have no lights, headlight, turn signals and rear brake light. Now when i hit my turn signal they work fine and when I apply my front or rear brakes the brake light works. Headlight completely inop and no driving lights at all. 6. Three sisters, ages 92, 94 and 96, live in a house together. One night the 96-year-old draws a bath. She puts her foot in and pauses. She yells to the other sisters, 'Was I getting in or out of the bath?' The 94-year-old yells back, 'I don't know. I'll come up and see.' She starts up the stairs and pauses 'Was I going up the stairs or down? The 92-year-old is sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters, she shakes her head and says, 'I sure hope I never get that forgetful, knock on wood.' She then yells, 'I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the door.' Three retirees, each with a hearing loss, were playing golf one fine March day. One remarked to the other, 'Windy, isn't it?' 'No,' the second man replied, 'it's Thursday.' And the third man chimed in, 'So am I. Let's have a beer.' Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, 'Now don't get mad at me ... I know we've been friends for a long time, but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is.. Her friend glared at her for at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her. Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?' As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, 'Herman,I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on Interstate 77.. Please be careful!' 'Hell,' said Herman, 'It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!' Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself 'I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light.' After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went on through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!' Mildred turned to her and said, 'Oh, darn, am I driving ?' Doug:missingtooth:
  7. Like this hasn't been dicussed before! Ha! Last December when I stored my bike I removed all the plactic and bought it into my basement shop with the intention of making all the repairs needed on the tabs and broken or missing pins. Oh yeah! And the headlight cover .... or replace it. So a good cleaning and a long look at everything showed me I had more work to do than I thought and I needed stuff to do it right. A really good epoxy and some ABS flatstock to replace or create new tabs and build up cracked areas on the fairings. Ok..... a couple of things. I tried 5 different epoxies over the winter. All dual chamber, 2 part dispensors for hard plastics or ABS listed on the package. I bought one "quick set, short cure time" and well, not worth it. All of the ones I chose were about 24 hours cure time. But from what I found, and tried a lot of different ways of testing the end repair, that they all seemed to have the same result with proper prep of the plastic to be repaired. As for repair materials.........you find things in the strangest places some times. I found all kinds of ABS flat stock at a grocery store. For FREE!! The store was doing a reset in the pop isle and all those plastic bin and shelf sliders are plastic......ABS plastic. Got to talking to the manager and they had ordered all new signage for the isles and displays and had stacks of sheets of plastic on the back waiting to be thrown out. Checked it out....three different thicknesses of ABS sheets. Some were 3 ft square. That should hold me through the testing process. But anyway I wanted to share some of my ideas and the way repairs were done. I know the head light covers suffer from cracked screw holes on a lot of the bikes and mine had really gone South so I'll start with that. The mounting holes in mine had given out and were missing pieces. So I tried this. Grind or sand out any rough edges and rough up the remaining surfaces with sandpaper. I wiped it all down with alcohol to remove any loose particals and oil. Next I packed the areas I wanted to keep open with modeling clay. Better than trying to reshape it later. I wrapped the front of the head light cover around the repair area with wax paper to shape the outer side of the repair. Attach it firmly with masking tape and create a cup for the epoxy. Fill the area with epoxy and let it cure. It's going to be thick so a couple of days would be plenty of time. Peel off the tape and wax paper. Most the paper will peel off and what sticks is easy to sand off. Remove the modeling clay and you will see the basic repair. I used a Dremel with a sanding drum to shape the epoxy rough and then used a sanding block to final shape it. Mask off the corners again and give it a light coat of primer. You will see any defects that need to be fixed. A light sanding and another thin coat of the epoxy to fill the defects and after curing it's ready for the final sand down, primer and the new paint. The paint is the tricky part. Still waiting for the color matching to work out and then the air brushing will be done. So far......installed it......and it took a good tightening with no cracking. So much for the head light. Next......the side panel pins.
  8. When I wind her up through the gears I am getting an oil warning light. Several others have said this is normal for the VR. What say you? Squid? Dingy? Others?
  9. Hi All, I'm in the middle of a 6000 mile trip on my 86 Venture. This morning I found that my entire dash readout stopped working. No fuel, temp, tach, or volts. No Turn signals or stop light either. Headlights and running lights work fine. Starts and runs great. Put 400 miles in the desert today without a problem. Now heres where it get quacky. It WILL come on once in a while. It might stay on for 10 seconds or an hour. If I do anything that require power (Stop light, horn etc.) it will shut down again. At one point I hit the horn and the screen came back on!! It should be noted that when it come on it goes thru the diagnostic test just like turning the key on. It seems to be acting like a bad ground. Any Ideas?
  10. On the MKII's trunk light, is it turned on with a mercury switch or is there a momentary switch that turns on the light when the trunk is opened? I noticed the brackets on the left hand side hinge that lead me to believe it would be a momentary switch. Would anybody happen to have an extra one they want to part with? Thanks, Bill
  11. I am trying to put the head light visor on and I am scared to pull or pry on the chrome piece around the light too much....Do I need to apply more force or is there a 'combination' to getting into the head light????
  12. Every thing has been in the shop this week New shock and rear tire on the bike Thank You Warranty !!!!!! Any help with the following would be GREAT.... My 96 GMC Jimmy The dome light will not turn off - Usually there is a delay maybe a minute till it shuts off after closing the door, also the same if you lift on the handle I had notice on a few occasions I look up the dome light is on been driving 10 min or so Open an close the door it goes out .. The first thing I did was remove the switch still stays on No dome over ride as in some later models I came out to a dead Battery twice ,second time I noticed the dome light was on It does not shut off ( pulled the 3 bulbs ) The truck was in the shop They ordered the part ( delay Sensor) We were sent a diagram of were the sensor is located. We had almost all of the dash apart we never did find the delay sensor to replace it Any Ideas ..... Thanks in advance...
  13. Cruzin down a dark country road and I hit the high beam and the headlight simply goes off. Dang it gets real dark and scary at 60 MPH and no lights with road construction all around. The first thought that entered my mind was all of the discussions about HID failures. My first reflex action is that if I just did something and did not like the result, first thing is to undo it. So I switched back to low beam the light flickered a couple of times but did not come back on. By now I am down to about 30 MPH and still hard on the brakes. While still breaking I wiggled the hi/lo switch and the headlight came back to life just as I was coming to a stop. So as long as I was stopped any how I did some quickie diagnostics, switching to hi would still cause the light to turn off, jiggling the switch I could get it to come on in hi, switching to lo would make the light go out, jiggling the switch I could get it to go back on. So I got it on in lo and hotfooted it back home, praying that a bump in the road would not make it go out again. So I guess that this weekend I get to tear the switch apart and hope that it is just a mater of cleaning and lubing the contacts. It was NOT the HIDs fault it was the bike that told it to turn off. I guess that I will be adding some driving lights so that if the big light ever goes out again, I will not be left in the dark, It could have been real bad had this happened on a curve instead of a straight.
  14. I've searched and cant really find anything on my problem, usually people have the problem that the brake light wont come on.... my issue is it wont go off. I tried doing some trouble shooting and I unplugged the foot brake switch with no avail so its looking like its the upper switch. I took the upper off and it seems to be moving freely, if I knew where it plugged in at I would unplug it to see if the light went off. So.... anyone know where it plugs in or have any idea what it could be???? Almost forgot... 2006 RSTD with 30k miles.
  15. I'm posting this in the watering hole rather than the RSTD tech section because I think it has wider appeal. But, you mods can move it if you want. I bought the Canadian Cruiser Customizing HID lamp that is all the rage. I went over to Cupcake's/Squidley's this morning and he installed it while I lamely assisted and Jus Monkeyin Around provided moral support. They are ace, by the way. I'll post install photos tomorrow after some shuteye. Last night I took some "before" photos of Roxie wearing the Sylvania Silver Star Ultra headlamp. Tonight I took some "after" photos for comparison. My first shot is from the house looking down the street. For these shots, the top photo is of the Sylvania, the bottom is the HID. You can clearly see that the HID is white, while the Sylvania is yellow. Interestingly though, the Sylvania is lighting up the Stop Sign at the end of the street, while the HID is not. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/4741266254_bd0efa6d96_o.jpg After that shot, I went to the end of the street and my better half took a low beam shot then a high beam shot. I should mention that all the shots in this series use the same settings, which were right for the first photo (f/4, 1" exposure, ISO 400). On low beam, the HID is clearly brighter. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4740631365_34785ce898_o.jpg Then I flipped on high beam. Check it out: the Sylvania is kickin' HID tail. Or so it seems. To me, I think the HID is maintaining a very tight focus, while the Sylvania is giving out greater intensity AND spill. So the Sylvania seems to be whuppin' up on the HID. But the center of the HID is completely burned out in the photo, like it was getting smashed by a laser. There are serious photons hitting the camera. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4740631765_a91c0530a5_o.jpg Next, my wife decided to snap a shot as I drove up. I'm glad she did, because you can compare the light blob. You can also see how the HID is making the street light up from reflected light. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4102/4740632603_3ee425bcbf_o.jpg I pulled the bike next to the camera, and shone on the garage. First low, then high beams. It looks to me like the HID on low beam is very similar to the Sylvania on high. When the HID is on high, you can see that the gutter is very over exposed. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4741268474_eb45db8586_o.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4095/4741268940_4b6216b907_o.jpg So what are my conclusions? First, although it is claimed to not be the case, I think the HID is aimed higher than the Sylvania. I understand it should be a simple switch out, but it just seems to me that the HID is aimed too high, especially on high beam. My office has a nice location in the garage where I can aim lights, and the next time I ride to work I will do that. Secondly, the Sylvania Silver Star Ultra is a superb light. I've had riders that I follow comment on how bright that bulb is. I especially like the enhanced spill I get on high beam. I almost don't need my passing lamps to spot deer. Almost. If you don't want to make the jump to HID, I can easily recommend this light. Lastly, the HID is very very bright. The photos don't show it, really. You can see that on some of the photos, there is a white haze... which I believe is overloaded sensors. The lamp is very tightly focused, which makes it hard to capture the brilliance. My wife told me when we went inside five minutes after I drove up the street that she was still seeing spots from the HID. She thinks it is too bright. I'll let you judge. I'm also interested in your comments. Dave
  16. OK...I have had the passing lights for several months now and I think I want to remove them. Besides them not even working anymore (may just be a loose wire), but I think I want to remove them anyway. I let my local STEALER put them on and I am thinking there is a STRAIGHT mount they removed that the turn signals were mounted to (when stock), and then replaced with this lightbar bracket. So am I correct to think that since they didn't give my parts (the other mount bar) back, that I will have to find one before I can go back to the stock look. Here are a couple of pics...the first one shows my bike BEFORE the light bar and the second shows the light bar AFTER the passing lights were mounted. Can I just take the LIGHTS off and connect the turn signals to the PRESENT light bar? Thanks for any help. Wally
  17. I installed my new HID headlight setup from HID Country a few weeks ago. From the start I'm having a problem with the light not always lighting. I turn the key off, and turn the key back on and it's fine most the time. I got caught a few times with no headlight on during the day. Has any one else had this problem? I talked with Jason from HID Country, but he has not responded yet. Thanks for any help.
  18. Friday after all the Back To The Bricks festivities I rolled in about 1:30am. Pulled under the awning and when I went to take the keys out, the key kind of grabbed. Grabbed enough to slip out of my fingers but not enough to keep them from coming out of the ignition. Yep, fell right into the fairing. Since the key to the house is on the key ring I took the spare key out of my wallet to get into the house. NO the spare key worked in the door knob but for some reason would not work in the dead bolt. All the house windows are locked because running the A/C, flash light in the saddle bag but no key to unlock it. Saw the neighbors light still on so I knocked on his door to borrow a flash light. (of course he had a Lady friend over) Got the flash light and was able to see the keys. Got my hand squeezed down there (motor still HOT) just touched the keys and down farther they fell. Found them again and ripped and burned half the skin off my arm getting to them. Once again as soon I touched them away they went again. Could see no sign of them now. About that time it's almost 3:00am, was going to climb in the van and sleep until morning. Van keys in the house. Noticed a car leave the neighbors and then my neighbor walked over to see if he could help. He got tools and we started taking things apart. Found the keys wedged between the fan and the radiator. Finally got into the house at 4:15am. Now I have enough (working) keys in my wallet to get into everything I own. At least this didn't cost me a bunch of money like everything else that has happened in the past 4 weeks.
  19. I might have to sell my '99 RSV. It's the purple and silver color. My photo gallery has photos of it. it's in good condition, no damage just 10+ years of riding. 89k miles, runs great. extras: chrome saddle bag rails chrome front fender rail chrome trunk rack hopnel tank bib and trunk bib chrome kuryakin highway pegs LED tail light chrome trailer hitch by hitch doctor back-off light module trailer light module 4-wire trailer lights old custom trailer included (Built by blackowl) passing lights clearview wide/tall tinted windshield with vent stock exhaust - extra set of Bubs included Purple LED accent lights DiamondR Rope light on trunk under passenger backrest custom LED light bar under trunk newer pillow tops seats and more I'm sure. I've been unemployed since mid-May and programming jobs for ColdFusion are very rare right now. Most companies are not even employing full time people right now. I've had several interviews, mostly get told I'm over qualified or they want someone with exact experience in a certain industry. I have more interviews, but I have to start thinking about selling this. $6,000 firm considering the condition, extras and trailer.
  20. Does anyone have a set of good Bub's, Jardines or ????? pipes for a 1st Edition and willing to part with em? Just added the Ventureline light bar that mounts below the bags and where the stock mufflers now dump the exhaust barely, and I do mean barely, are below the bottom of the light bar. Looks silly. First I thought I'd just out bid someone on fleabay for a set of those chrome dual downturned muffler extensions but seems like there will never be another set up for bidding. Even checked CL. Even posted here to see if anyone had a set they'd part with but so far no good. So, now I think the only way to go will be a set of after markets pipes/mufflers. Will pay whatever it takes. MG
  21. I have a 2000 Venture that is new to me and I was wondering (since I have no owners manual) What lights come on when You turn on the key. Mine only has the yellow check engine light come on for a few seconds then when I kit the starter 2 red lights one each side on the bottom come on while starting it.Should there be other lights come on when the key is on? Also I noticed 2 times in the 4,000 miles I have put on the bike that when it was really hot and I had a tail wind the yellow check engine light came on very faintly so faintly that at first I wasn't sure if itwas on or if it was the sun. Does this light let you know it is getting a little warm or what? Thanks for the help. I am sure I will get everything figured out with you alls help Rick
  22. Hi everyone, I have a set of ELECTROPODS led lights and I would like to mount them under the tank. I would like to know if anyone else has used them and where on a second gen. can you mount them to light up the engine. I have the rectangular ones if that makes any difference. Thank you.
  23. I leave work at 1:00 am every night. The traffic lights do not change to green untill aproached by a cage and ignores motorcycles. When driving my truck I have notice that the light changes in 16 seconds. So, when I approach the light with my motorcycle I count off 20 seconds then go through if the way is clear. Last night I was pulled over for crossing on a red light. I explained the above situation to the officer and after verifying my license he let me off. Who is too say the next time I will get let off though and as I explained to him I can't sit there all night waiting for a cage to approach the light. I know this is not an uncommon occurance, so how do the rest of you deal with these situations
  24. OK... the questions about using a Halogen 1157 brake light for a RSV have been in the messages for years but I have never seen an answer? Has anyone replaced their 1157 brake light bulb with a 50watt or 30watt Halogen 1157 bulb? The Sylvania 2357LL will be my only choice unless someone has experience to share. Well? Comments? Thanks; JohnB
  25. :soapbox:From a thread here I purchased the HID head light kit from a manufacturer in Canada. This was a plug and play easy install. Before I putit all back together I tried and it worked as promised. Then testing again and all was fine. When secured all wiring I tested again and nothing. I hear the igniter but no light. I checked all wiring and all tested fine. Tested again a nothing. No ignitor buzz or light. So I took it all off. Any clues, suggestion other than returning it. Thanks:confused24:
