  1. what the hell, Hell makes the evening news! http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/wackiest-small-town-names-america-vacation-hell-michigan/story?id=10490371 spent some time riding around those parts labor day weekend 2009. The Damn Site Inn has some pretty good grub, and there are nice backroads all around there... might be cold there now, but it'll be hotter than hell there soon enough!!! Brian
  2. Captain Joe, were you 2 up? riding with others? Most of your mileage must have been on the interstate, right? thanks! Brian
  3. Steve, great story of a great adventure!! I've been checkingout the Iron Butt website as it is something I am interested in doing someday. Thanks for all the insights and tips and ups and downs of your journey!! I'd be interested to know your setup for the phone and GPS and headset, how you communicated with your wife while driving, etc. I guess the name Saddlesore 1000 is pretty accurate, eh? Great job, glad to hear you made it home safe!! Brian
  4. well, I opened her up so I can check all the audio connections...but I had a feeling I might have a tab problem...both ends of the windshield brace were broken and one lower tab on the chrome windshield piece was snapped off...didn't find any loose pieces, so I've probably been driving it with broken tabs...I did think there was some looseness in the windshield over bumps... so...I jb welded the brace back in place, at least for the time being it felt pretty tight...made a tab and jb welded it back on after using the dremel to clean it up..haven't put it back together yet...wife got home and wanted to get dinner...so I'll hopefully get it back together in the morning... tightend up some wiring and dielectric grease on all the audio... all the lights work fine and no audio problems yet...a test ride will tell.. spending far more time working on it and not riding....hope this takes care of 'problems' for a while... but thanks to this forum I am no longer a fairing virgin!! thanks to freebird, goose, and all the others here that share their knowledge and fixit experiences... Brian
  5. So call me crazy, but I've had this '06 MV for two months and I want to go for a nice long ride. My wife's niece is getting married on May 5th in Detroit Lakes, MN, so I'm trying to plan on leaving Carlsbad CA on Friday April 29th, have to be back to work on Tuesday, May 10th. Up I-15 north to somewhere in Colorado or Wyoming or Montana and east-northeast to Fargo/Detroit Lakes. Any ideas, comments, psychiatric care, or whatever is appreciated. I figure it's about 2K miles each way, planning on about 500 per day. If the weather that area is currently getting continues, it's probably not going to happen, but I'm hoping it'll be warm enough to go. We did a 315 mile each way 2 weeks ago, the Butler Mod helped alot, and we could have gone for a couple hundred more easy... what's everybody think about this idea? thanks! Brian
  6. interesting....couldn't just hand the kid a hundred? I was thinking you were talkign about something else to stay warm... DUH!
  7. probably a stupid question, but what is a Benjamin? Brian
  8. Margaret, is there an easy way to download the assistance list, or does one need to go member by member and jot down the info? Thanks! Brian:fingers-crossed-emo
  9. That ride sounds like the best way to spend ANY DAY!!! My wife and I visited Tennesee last April and had a wonderful time! We have friends who moved to Paris TN about 2 years ago, got out of CA when the gettting was good. We would move back there in a heartbeat if the economy came back around and we could get out of our mortgage without losing our rearends! Thanks for sharing that ride, that's one of the big reasons I bought a nice comfy ride, so the wife and I could just go, cuz it's the journey, not the destination!! ride safe! Brian in SoCal
  10. When my wife has the wind I don't let her ride with me!! Adjust her diet a little, she'll be okay!! OH! Not that kind of wind??? HUh! Guess my wife is short enough or I'm tall enough, plus I've got the tall stock windshield, so she's happy back there! Happy wife, happy life!! Brian
  11. David, as a fairly newbie venture guy here, I understand your situation. I learn something new everytime I get on here, and that's everyday and sometimes for way too much time!! Anyway, I found the other website has pics of your fuse boxes, so check this out and you should be good to go! http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/?action=article&cat_id=002007&id=407 Click on Tech Library and then electrical and Fuse Box locations... Great website for tech stuff as well as this one!! I hope you get that '03 up and running and thanks for sharing your misfortune and experience with this problem! Let us know how your bike comes out of this! Brian
  12. Happy birthday Jay!! The year I turned 50 (2007) I rode my '01 Triumph Adventurer 1400 miles from CA to Norman OK to visit my twin bro...partied for the weekend and turned around and came home! A nice 2800 mile ride in 7 days....Do something fun and remember, 50 is YOUNG!!! Hope it's ridng weather wherever you are.....it's raining here... Semper Fi! Brian
  13. Wally, first off, thanks for this post! I had a problem last weekend with the radio, first long trip, 315 miles each way. Worked fine all the way to Laughlin from Carlsbad, CA. I had been having some headlight fuses blow, and sure enough, we go out to the bike on Sunday morning and I ask my wife to check the signals, lights, etc. She's standing in front of the bike and its running, and says, "turn on the headlights honey". What? the bikes running, the lights gotta be on. So I pop off the cover, put in a fresh 15 amp headlight fuse, and still no lights. So we get on the bike and ride home 315 miles with no lights and no running lights. So back to the radio. On the way home the radio started doing weird things. It froze up on one channel, wouldn't go up or down, wouldn't shut off. I got it stuck on some weird channel and ended up just turning the volume all the way down. At a fuel stop, I tried it after starting back up and it worked, some CB static and finally I got it to a working channel. Made it home, spent my Friday this week pulling the wires for the headlights and passing lights. Seems a couple of them were loose connections, so I shrunk wrapped it all, put a fresh fuse in and waa-laa! Turned the front end back and forth and no problems. So now I guess my next task will be, as you say Wally, pulling apart the fairing and playing with all the audio cables. I've only had this bike for 6 weeks, but I love the ride and my wife loves the backseat, so I'm learning so much from this site and all you great venture owners! I guess my Friday this week will be in the fairing playing with audio! Again, I want to say this is a great site and I would have never had the confidence to pull all those wires to fix the lighting problem, and with all the info on here about the fairing removal I'm sure I'll be good to go! THANK YOU VENTURERIDERS!!! Brian '06 Midnight Venture --one more quick question, when I plugged my MP 3 connector into the outlet next to the cassette deck it blew the headlight fuse, this was before I re-wired it all up. Any ideas??
  14. So the contest is to win a little puddle jumper, but my question to you is, how many of you have purchased the Yamaha Extended Service Warranty? From much of what I have read here the 5 year warranty is difficult to get service from, so whats everybody/anybodys opinion of the Y.E.S.? I'll be finding out next week how the 5 year warranty works, I've got the electrical problem with the headlights as well as the radio shorting out.... Y.E.S. Or NO?? thanks! Brian
  15. Man oh man those are making me hungry!! Works fine here, I'm in SoCal wishing I had some Wisconsin cheese!!! Those are some fine looking burgers, enough variety to try a different one every week!! I'm not sure about KBOP, but it could just be an ID 10 T error! thanks for sharing that great site!! Brian
  16. Well, OFF THE WALL things, I would recommend a trip by Wall Drug! http://www.walldrug.com/ Wall, SD. A great place for a couple hours of nostalgia. Ride Easy! Brian
  17. Thanks! I read the instructions several times, looked at the bikes lighting and figured it out. Not as bad as I thought. Works good! Thanks for the help. On to the next problem! Seems like a great bike, but lots of little things to keep you busy in the garage! Brian
  18. BigDawg

    Army food

First off let me thank your son for his service. I know from speaking to active duty Marines here at Camp Pendleton CA that when they are out on the outposts they may not get resupply for a week or two, and they may have to go on one MRE a day or even two days. This is mostly due to their ability to carry what they need, and much of what they need is ammo and weaponry. There is no excuse for it, other than it's war, and war is full of times of hardship. My time in the first gulf war (was that 20+ years ago already??) we (the Marines) were a little bit better supplied than some of the army units, but still had times when the food had to be rationed... as for buying his own gear, it's not right that he should have to do that, but it's been going on for many years..many stores here in Oceanside CA still in business because the Marines want or need better gear than what they are issued... I pray for all our service members a safe and swift return home! Semper Fi Brian "BigDawg" Nielsen USMC 1975-1999 ALR 146 President
  19. Well, didn't want to sell the 2001 Triumph Adventurer when I bought the '06 RSV MV about 6 weeks ago, so I've got two "ventures" in the garage!! Try to ride the triumph at least once a week or she gets cranky...but I'm really lovin the MV ride...goin out for a nice 300 mile ride on Saturday and back on Sunday...I'll let ya know how it goes... 20. SilvrT, I need a neighbor like you! Okay, so I've got the custom dynamics 15" LED Bar and I've got all the hardware I need to mount it but the wiring is what kind of scares me, in all the instructions I've read it doesn't walk an electrical moron like me through it very well. Are the brake and running lights behind the license plate or is that wiring under the fender or what? I'm pretty sure I can do it but I'm just not sure which wires are what. Can somebody give me some pics or a really good description of how one connects the wires from the LED to the wires off the brake light? thanks for any help I can get~~!! Brian:fingers-crossed-emo
  21. So as a new rider of the Venture, and still under warranty until 09/2012, should I be concerned about voiding the warranty if I use anything other than Yamalube? Sounds pretty strict...what are other warranty holders using? Brian
  22. I have looked thru the classifieds here on this forum and cannot find anything about Pioneer or Chad, could you give us a website to check out the windshield bag you are referring to? Any pics of the installation are also quite helpful! thank you very much! Brian
  23. okay, I noticed when I slowly removed the oil drain bolt a shaving of metal about the circumference of the bolt...then when I took the bolt all the way out there was metal around the last 3-4 threads...now the bolt won't tighten up in the pan even with a new washer...this really sucks...it's under warranty, but it's a half hour away to the dealer, and would have to be towed...not sure I want those guys working on it anyway..should I put a self-tapping plug in with some teflon tape or what's my best solution here? I don't want to jeopardize the warranty, but I'd like to take care of this myself.. I know you guys are a wealth of info on here, please give me your wisdom and knowledge! thanks! Brian
  24. my buddy rides a GW and uses wingstuff quite a bit, and I just ordered the J&M's the other day at 69.99 each, haven't used them yet, as we are getting ready to go to MI for a visit with mom (89 years young last Saturday)...anyway, he said if you join the club you get 10% off and if you are military/retired you get another 10% on top of the other discount..they are actually just up the road from me about 40 minutes, someday I'll make the ride and check out their store..if'n you like saving money that is....
  25. Rick, thanks for that post, I've been thinking that when I take that front end apart for the first time I'm either going to find a broken tab or break one in the process, so this looks like a good fix. Sounds like another purchase for my new toy! Brian P.S. Thanks for your service! USMC 1975-1999 Gulf War Vet
