Gl1100 turn signal self cancel problem
GeorgeS replied to BlueVenture87's topic in Honda Goldwing Tech Talk
Auto parts store, get a can of CRC, Brand, electrical contact cleaner !! Clean the switch, they find the Flasher Unit ( I assume there is one someplace ) and cleand the plugs on that, if cleaning the switch does not work. Thats where I would " start " and go from there. If its still under warrenty, head for a dealer !! -

Class acting up
GeorgeS replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Before you rip and tear, simple remove the Controller, The Electrical plug about 6 inches from the unit, in " Notorious " for haveing bad connections. !!! Open the plug, Clean the male and female contacts, and Tug Tug on all the wires on both ends of the plug. !!! They might pull right out of the pins, If so, the fix is to Release the pins, push them out, recrimp, the pins, and maby also solder them, before re-assembling the plug. !!! :detective: -
Well, Yes!! Its that time of year again !!!! Woop E !!!! :cool10:
-
Well , maby he drove thu a puddle !! ?? Also, this kind of sounds like the 2nd Gen Ignition Switch, problem. Maby his Ing Switch is on the verge of going bad. I agree on the battery, if over 3 to 4 years. I had a lead acid go bad in less then a year. ( classic one cell going bad ) I hate , electrical problems, that " come, and go " They are the worst kind.
-
The fact that after sitting a few day, the problem " magically " went away !!! Might--- Indicate that water or moisture had gotten into an electrical plug someplace, causing a high resistance connection. After drying out, problem magically went away. ??? I don't have a 2nd gen, but sombody recently posted about lots of connections located " under the Battery " He cleaned them all, and Sealed all the connector against Water, and never had another problem. You might look into this. I don't remember who made that posting.

Back In Minn. on the farm , growing up , they got into the attic. Finally Dad got up there to clean out the mess, As I remember he carted out about 3 wheelbarrows full of Black Walnuts. ( we had this giant Black Walnut tree next to the house )

Well, I though it was better then most of the stuff on TV these days!!! Sombody sent it to me, figured a few folks here would enjoy it !!!

Most of us are to old for that stuff !!! ----

If her dad rides, you think he would have enough sence to get her something sensible to learn to ride on !! Try to talk some sence into Daddy !! I suppose thats about all you can do .

Hook a voltmeter across the battery terminals, the hit starter, see how low the voltage drops. Next question, is how old is the battery? If over 3 years, its probably suspect. Possibly, a bad, start solinoid, listion to it up close, you should hear a click. Next I would hook volt meter to the starter Positive cable terminal, see if you actually get any voltage there when you hit the start button. Also, a very common problem, on these bikes is the " Ignition Switch itself "

Jerry,Speedometer replacement
GeorgeS replied to jerrysleather's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Are you Just replaceing the Cable, in side the Outer Sheath ??? IF, so, all you have to do is disconnect the sheath at the front wheel and pull out the inner Cable, then shove the new one in, from the bottom. ( Coat the new cable with Greese ) If there is nothing wrong with the Speedo Unit itself, then this is all you have to do. -

Are these stock springs
GeorgeS replied to tcoop's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thats strange, they look like Progressive springs. Never heard of them going bad. Maby sombody installed the wrong size progressive springs. Maby sombody has a set of progressive's for that bike and can measure them, to compare to the length of yours.- 10 replies

$1,400.00 and still don't run
GeorgeS replied to bdlight4's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, sorry guys, have have not been around much the last year or so. Been haveing a lot of family problems, ( won't go into that ) ( but the worst is over ) The 89 Venture has been running great for the last 40K or so. Only made one 600 mile trip last summer, due to other problems. But planning on hitting the road again this summer. Most likley will be heading down to Los Angeles, and Also touring some back roads, in Oregon State. I might possibly make a Run to Minneapolis Minn. And check in with some old friends there. The last 15 months or so, the only Mods, I have made to the 89 Venture, has been to Install an Icom IC-7000 Ham Radio Transciever, and duel antenna system for the HF Radio system. I have been fabricating Home Brew HF antenna,s for the Bike, and the ham radio installation in my Chevy Trail Blazer. Anyway, after dealing with a lot of problems, I finally have fully functional HF Ham radio comm from the bike, on the road, in motion. 100 Watt System, operating 40, 20, 15, and 10 Meters. ( also, 2Meters, and 440 band ) But have to Change antennas for the different HF Frequency bands. ( IF your not a Ham Radio Operator, Ignor this information, won't mean anything to you !! ) Basicly, it was more trouble then it was worth, but--- I got it working. ( us retired guys have to do something to keep from going crazy ) Obvious Question here, is "" Batteries """ ??? -----I'm useing Two, DEKA, AGM Bats. Run them in Parallel. #2 battery is mounted in left side saddle bag. Will be installing a new Dunlop E-4 this month, about 17K on the old one, and should be ready for the summer. Had the bike out yesterday for a 75 mile run, seems to be running great. :whistling: -
89 VR Left 2 Cylinders Not 100%
GeorgeS replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The main fuel line from pump runs to top of Carb bank, then the lines split off to Each side, left and right. Possible the line going to the left side is blocked. ( but I doubt this, but its possible ) Open the Bowl drain, on each of the left side carbs. Turn on fuel pump, make sure you are getting fuel thru the bowl Drains. If you can not find any other reason for the problem, I would Re Do the Carb Sync Proceedure !!! Might be Moisture Inside of the TCI Unit. Check the Wireing cable from the Ignition Pick Up Unit running up to the TCI. 5 wire cable, there is a Plug about half way up to the TCI, Open that plug, clean the Connectors, Check the wires , make sure not loose Crimps on the male and female pins. ( Plug located about under your left knee, as you sit on the bike ) I would also, completly drain your fuel tank, and start with fresh fuel. -
cable upgrade
GeorgeS replied to from my seat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well, you can simply, Resolder Both Ends, of Both of the old cables. You might find on carefull inspection, that the factory did not solder the studs, I found that on my new 89, back in 93 that two of the 4 studs had been Soldered. The other 2 had not. Simply, cleaning all 4 studs, ( dip in solder flux, and heat with torch ) and then Resolder all 4 studs, is a big improvement!! ( use rosin core solder ) Also where the Neg Cable is grounded to the Engine case, remove the bolt and clean up the corrosion. Also, where the Pos. Cable Connects to the Starter Motor, you will most likly find Corrosion, After, cleaning and resoldering the cable Studs, you will have a big Improvement. Also, Your Starter Solinoid, if over 50K on the Bike, most lilkey is burned to a Crisp Internally !!. Replace the Solinoid, !! This will also be a big improvement in the speed at which your Starter Turns !! ( A DEKA, dry cell, battery is also highly reccomended !! ) Check with " Condor " on the Battery thing, he will back me up on that !! Also, be sure to Check the Pos. Bat Cable below, the Left, fwd , corner of the battery box, as it pass's thru the frame. Might be some wear, or damage, on the cable insulation, there from rubbing on the frame.- 6 replies

Help!! My dealer has let me down
GeorgeS replied to motorcycle_1300's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Sounds fishy to me! What year, how many miles on this bike ?? From your comments, the dealer has added problems from the original small oil leak. ( ie: he has screwed up something on your bike !! ) If there is another dealer in your area, I would get a second opinion. I agree with the above comments, " Air Leaks in the Intake system !! " Loose , upper or lower clamps on one or more of the carbs !!! Check all of your Plug Wires !! Check the Clamps, below, and above the Carbs, might be loose. Frankly if this dealer delivered the bike to you in this condition, without doing a test ride after, haveing the top end off to replace Valve Cover gaskets, I do not think much of his mechanic's abilities !!! I think I would give the owner of this dealer, a piece of my mind concerning his mechanic's work on your bike !!
