  1. Goose, Are you bring your exhaust gas analyzer to MD? Gary
  2. Anyone that wants to come is welcome. I am just trying to get a rough head count. I will let manager know late Friday afternoon an approximate number, and it could increase at last minute as far as I am concerned. This is a fairly large place. Car & motorcycle themed. Gary
  3. Attached are front and rear scans of the menu at Quaker Steak & Lube for anyone interested in going Friday night from MD. Manager said they could accommodate us, I told him I would try to let him know Friday afternoon how many were coming. Try to leave Don's 7:00-7:30pm. Its about 30 minute ride from Don's. It's in Sheffield Village, not Oberlin,as post title would suggest. I added PDF file of menu scans, its a little more readable. Almost 2 meg size. Gary
  4. Nothing really wrong with them to keep you away from one. It is not a Second Gen though. The 2nd gen refers to 1999-2010 Royal Star Ventures. 1983-1993 are 1st gens. 1983-1985 are refered to as MKI's. 1986-1993 are refered to as MKII's 2nd gens are a whole nother critter than 1st gen's, much more different than they are similar. MKI's & MKII's are very similar. Look at the Venture history tab in menu above. Gary
  5. Pickup coil or TCI. My guess is TCI. Gary
  6. That's one of the nice things about having a 27 year old motorcycle. People don't have as high of expectations as to what it's suppose to look like. I got a Ridin' Machine, not a Washin' Machine. Gary
  7. The primary function of the back up circuit is to supply un-switched 12v power to the radio. This enables radio to maintain time & station presets. I would hazard a guess that the RSV's have a some sort of long life battery internally as well, due to odometer storage. Gary
  8. I was told by a local locksmith that motorcycles after 1998 no longer have a key code on the bike. Reason was that people could get code # one way or another, then have key made, then steal bike. He seemed to know what he was talking about. Gary

    Morons

Hey Boomer, this ones for you. "Well," snarled the tough old Navy Chief to the bewildered Seaman. "I suppose after you get discharged from the Navy, you'll just be waiting for me to die so you can come and piss on my grave." "Not me, Chief!" the Seaman replied. "Once I get out of the Navy, I'm never going to stand in line again!" Semper Fi... Gary

Junior, There is an old adage that goes something like this. It is better to keep your mouth shut, and let people think your a fool, Rather than opening it, and removing all doubt. Gary
  11. If you want some more detailed info on installing a relay look at thread below. There is a detailed PDF file attached to the first post that will guide you through it. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43150&highlight=relay Gary
  12. Quaker Steak & Lube is about a 20 mile, 30 minute ride from Don's. I haven't been to this one, but I have been to the one down in Columbus a number of times. If anyone is interested I could pursue getting us set up there, it might help Don out. Below is a link to yahoo review. http://local.yahoo.com/info-15542480-quaker-steak-lube-sheffield-village;_ylc=X1MDMjAyMjQ2NzAxMQRfcgMyBF9zAzk2NjEzNzcwBGFjY3RpZANbb2JqZWN0IE9iamVjdF0EZ2lkAzE1NTQyNDgwBHNlYwNhbGdvBHNsawNtb3Jl Gary
  13. I just put a set of progressives in the bike. The Progressive instruction states the MAXIMUM oil level should be 5 1/2" down from top with forks collapsed and the fork spring removed. You do not need an expensive fork oil level adjuster to set the height. Use a piece of clear vinyl tubing and a suction bulb (turkey baster). Mark the tubing to the depth you want to set the oil level at and insert it into fork tube to this level and suction oil out. If you need to add oil, a small wooden dowel inserted into tube will give an approximate depth of oil. I set mine with the forks fully extended. The service manual shows a 5 1/2" travel for the front forks. So I marked tubing at 11" (5 1/2 (recommended height) + 5 1/2" (fork travel)) and set oil level. Progressive installation sheets attached below. Gary
  14. Mick, I have a set that came off of an 88 1st gen. The MKII's have a different profile than the MKI levers. I didn't use them. these. These have the finger ridges removed and are powder coated black. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT0245-1.jpg
  15. That's good for me. Gary
  16. Does anyone have a plan on what time we would leave Don's for dinner on Friday? My wife works Friday, so I would probably ride back down to Mansfield and pick her up at 5:30, then be back at Don's by 6:30. Gary
  17. Good thing they gave those second gen's a five year warranty. Those first gen's are like an Energizer Bunny, keep going & going & going, till you can't see how far ahead they are !!! http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/energizer.jpg Gary
  18. Below are a couple of pictures of a plug I pulled from bike. Any comments on its appearance and related engine tweaks would be appreciated. Plug was pulled after low speed ride & pulling into garage. Iridium plug. About 1300 miles on it. 1300 engine Vmax heads Mains 150 jet PAJ2 160 jet Four 7/16" dia holes in air box lid K&N air filter Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT0288.jpg http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/PICT0289.jpg
  19. Per side. Service manual says 13.8 oz. in appendices. Gary
  20. Valves are different on Vmaxs. Stem is 1mm smaller dia.. O.D. of valve head is 1.5 mm larger. This gives the engine more ability to pull air in and push it out. One of the differences I have seen on mine with the Vmax heads is that I am now running with four 7/16" dia. holes in the air box lid. With the stock 1200 engine, it would degrade the engine performance with just two 7/16" holes. I can't say how much the air holes are helping if any, but they don't seem to hurt. Putting the extra air in the bike tends to lean it out, and most ventures are running lean on a factory setup. I have tweaked carb jetting some to overcome lean running. I have not put a v-boost on as of yet. Maybe this winter. Gary
  21. That is not a bad deal, they look to be is very good shape. Also if you add the 4 piston calipers, you should also use a master cylinder from an MKII. The bore size is larger on the MKII to supply extra fluid to the masters. Attached is a spreadsheet I made up when I was looking at doing this to my MKI. Shows caliper, master and rotor comparisons for various Yamaha substitutions. Gary
  22. Yes and no. The rotor will bolt up to the wheel. It won't work however with the MKI caliper. The MKI rotor is 298mm in dia. x 7mm thick, The MKII rotor is 282 mm in dia. x 8.5mm thick. The contact surface area of the pads to rotors is different. The MKII calipers can be used if the lower fork tubes are changed to MKII's. The mounting bolt spacing for the calipers for the MKI's is 80mm, the MKII's is 100mm. Gary
  23. I did not do an entire Vmax engine swap. The Vmax will however fit right in. I used the bottom end out of a 1988 Venture, which is a 1300cc compared to a 1200 Vmax. This is what the Vmax guys are doing to get more HP. The top end from a Vmax will bolt right up to the 1300 lower end. You want to use 1300 head gaskets. Exhaust headers are a match. The main problem is getting the V-boost system to fit in. It can be done though. Requires modification to air cleaner. Choke is different on Vmax carbs, hand choke on carb body instead of on handlebars. In my humble opinion, the collector is not that much of a restriction compared to the mufflers. From what I could see in the collector, there was only one internal 'swiss cheese' baffle. By shining a light in the intake I could see lots of light through the muffler port. The mufflers are a huge restriction. Gary
  24. Can you get the old bleeder screw out of the caliper? Gary
