Even with risers you are still in a back slanted forward position. I much prefer my back to be upright like on either generation of Venture.
-
Both the Concours and the FJR have too forward leaning of riding positions to be a replacement for a first gen Venture.

I was looking at some pics of my old 83 Venture last night and it reminded me somewhat of the style of the Victory Vision. I know they don't look that similar but with the lines of the 83-85 saddlebags the bike does have a swoopines that reminds me of a Vision. I'm not old enough to remember when these bikes were new. Was the Venture seen as a radically styled bike at the time, like the Vision is now? http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/epic_mcy/250/83_venture_250.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:HP63CONAb7UmAM:http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%2520C/Victory%2520Vision%2520Street.jpg

I currently ride an 01 Vulcan 1500 with baffled Corbra drag pipes. I LOVE the sound of the bike. I've read that the RSV with the right mufflers sounds like a V8. How do you guys with aftermarket mufflers find they sound? If I like a bike to have a distinctive sound would I like a V4 with pipes? I realize a v4 won't sound like a single crank pin V-twin. I've ridden an RSV with stock and debaffled stock mufflers. They were both on the quiet side for my taste.

If you want an old bike why not get a "new" Royal Enfield?

My 99 was a sales rep's demo. I bought it with 1500 miles and put another 47,000 trouble free miles on it. I only paid $12,000 for it though when the new bike price was $16,000. So your price sounds high to me. One difficultly I had was that when I went in for the trunk replacement under warranty the warranty came back as powertrain only. I called the sales rep and he straightened it out, but make sure you are getting the full warranty. EDIT, I just noticed the price is Canadian, so I'm not sure what a good price would be.

I had one of these when I had my RSV. It worked fine. Trouble is on my current Vulcan I cant figure out what to synch the carb to.

How was riding the RSV on the Dragon. When I had an RSV I rode on some extended sets of twisties in the Ozarks in Missouri. After awhile I was getting tired of turns and hoping for a straight road! But my Dad on his BMW felt the same way.

I had an RSV from 1999 to 2003 for 48,000 miles. I never had any issues with the carbs gumming up during storage or getting badly out of balance. In the next few years I may buy another touring bike and really did like my Venture but I'm having a hard time with the thought of buying a new bike that isn't fuel injected. I had FI on my 02 Nomad and had no issues with it. But like I said I didn't have issues with the RSV either. My current bike is a Vulcan 1500 carb model. On that the carb doesn't bother me much because there is only 1 of them. The Venture has a lot of carbs to have issues with if you have issues. How expensive is it for a dealer to remove and clean the carbs if needed? On the Vulcan it cost $250 for a cleaning and rejetting. How common or rare is it for a RSV to have carb issues? Would you let it being carburated keep you from buying one in this day and age of most new bikes being injected?

I remember the pre-kid years when I put 15,000 a year on my RSV. I even managed to put 13,000 on my Nomad it's first year. This year I've put 2800 on the 2 bikes I've had this year. I'll do more next year.

I tried trading my bike for a convertible last year. Didn't last. Now I have a convertible and a bike! But I miss my old bike that was set up just right for me!

Surprised to hear all the anti v-twin talk. I had a RSV from 99-03. I traded it for a Vulcan 1500. After riding a v-twin with a set of Cobra pipes I'm not really sure I want to go back to a non-twin bike. The sound of a good v-twin is VERY intoxicating.

Decided not to buy 2007 venture
keithert replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Sorry to hear you aren't getting it. It looks like a sweet machine. The price is better than I paid for my demo 99 in 99! I'm surprised they didn't do a better job of trying to remove the warning sticker on the tank. I would look into a credit union though. -
I had a 91 Concours for a year awhile back. It was a very fast bike but not terribly comfortable for longer rides. There is a 92 for sale near me for $2000. It is tempting!

My only real experience with a trike was at a demo. I ran over my own feet! I will say that a convertible car is NO substitute for a bike. I traded my Nomad last year for a new Miata. While the Miata is fun it is not a bike. If you need to trike the bike for stability I say go for it. You will still be in the wind!

I just read an article on the new V-max. It was only getting 25-30 mpg. Even if it is detuned for the RSV it probably won't get a lot higher. That could be a downer for the new RSV. Plus the cam covers on the motor are just ugly. Wonder how they would be gussied up for a cruiser.

Venture or Tour Deluxe?
keithert replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have a Mazda MX-5. I can say that it is defiantly NOT a replacement for a bike, even a fully faired Venture. I am not a fan of a fully faired bike though. I'd be more inclinded toward the RSTD. When my Nomad was dressed for winter with the full shield and lowers and crash bar chaps it's wind protection was equal to the Venture's, but I could take it all off. -
Venture or Tour Deluxe?
keithert replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I had a 99 RSV for 3 years and 48,000 miles. It was a very comfortable bike. I grew tired of the fixed fairing due to the heat behind it and the lack of the openness of an unfaired bike. I traded it for an 02 Kaw Nomad. The Nomad was a great bike but was not as comfortable as the Venture for longer rides. If I were buying new I'd seriously look at the RSTD. Best of both worlds. What really upset me was that Yamaha brought our the RSTD shortly after I bought my Nomad. I could probably have bought the front end pieces to convert my RSV to a RSTD in the front for a lot less than I spent trading the bike for the Nomad. A converted RSV would be the best of both worlds in that you would have the Venture's seating and trunk but not the fairing. -
I test rode a trike once. I ran over my own feet by not lifting them soon enough! OUCH.

Why do you feel the RSV is more comfortable?

I had a 99 Venture from 99 to 2003. It was by far the most comfortable bike for putting the miles on of any I have owned. I currently have an 01 Kaw Vulcan 1500. It's nice for shorter rides but doesn't fit me as well as the RSV did. I traded the RSV in 2003 because I got tired of always having a fairing in front of me. Of course then they had to go and come out with the new tour deluxe shortly after that! I am looking into the RSTD in the future, but I wonder if it would be as comfortable as the Venture. Part of what I liked about the Venture was it's seat. The RSTD uses a different seat. I know the seat could probably be swapped fairly easiliy. Is there any other difference in suspension or seating position between the bikes?

I forget who made it but I had a center stand on my 99. It was great for cleaning, storage and maintenance. It was also very easy to use. I'd recommend a center stand on an RSV.

Just west of Madison there are some great motorcycle roads. Lot's of twisties!

Venture seat on a RSTD?
keithert replied to keithert's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Thanks, I don't have either bike at the moment but had a 99 Venture in the past. It had the best seat of any bikes I've owned so if I were to get a RSTD in the future I'd like to be able to use a Venture seat.
