  1. The bike is almost completely stock. The mods are that I removed the windshield and put on a handlebar mounted mini-shield. Also yesterday I put on a Utopia backrest. I'll look but I don't think there are any wires right under the seat frame.
  2. This morning I looked the swingarm and tire over for marks. Didn't find any on either. I then took the bike for a solo ride and it was fine. I stopped occasionally to put my hand on the tires to check the temperature. The rear was slightly warmer than the front but not excessively so. My question is has anyone ever seen where too little pressure in the shock could lead to rubbing? When I had my Venture I paid very little attention to the air in the shocks. We did weigh about 40 pounds less then though.
  3. Tonight my wife and I rode the bike about 10 miles. On the way home I smelled a burning rubber smell when I slowed down. I stopped at a gas station and the rear tire was hot. Together we weigh 450 pounds. The rear shock had 20 lbs of air in it. Can the shock having low pressure cause the tire to rub against the fender when heavily loaded? The tire had 40 lbs of pressure in it so it wasn't under inflated. I put the pressure up to 32 (my progressive pump only goes to 30) and rode 1 mile home from the gas station. I didn't smell the burning rubber again. The bike only has 5600 miles on it. It is an 07 RSTD.
  4. I have an old Garmin e-map GPS unit. Back when I had my 99 RSV I found that a simple zip tie worked well to hold it onto the mirror mount. I used this setup for thousands of miles. I did clip the units wrist strap around a point on the bike in case the zip tie were to break. This method didn't work on the bikes that came after the RSV. Now that I have an RSTD it works again! I wonder if Garmin has a similar form factor in an updated GPS unit. http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a422/keithert/20140603_070900_zpsolghtxoe.jpg
  5. It was the first start of the day.
  6. I do hear the fuel pump when I turn the key.
  7. Yesterday I bought the RSTD I've been looking at. Riding it home I went 30 miles on the expressway to the DMV. It was hot and slow at times. 10 minutes after I stopped it didn't want to restart. I tried using the choke and even put it on reserve. After cranking a bit it started. I then put gas in it and it only took 3 gallons so reserve probably wasn't necessary. To me this sounds like it could be an issue with the petcock. I've heard of this on other bikes. The rest of the day it started fine. Any ideas on the cause?
  8. I'm considering buying an 07 RSTD today. The only issues I have with it is that it does have the whine. It is most noticeable in second and fourth gear. When I shift into fifth the whine goes away. The bike is pristine and has only 5600 miles. The price is $6200. Does the whine get better with miles? With my faceshield down I can't hear it much but with it up or an open face helmet it is noticeable. Would you buy another whiner given your experiences?
  9. I have a set of Metzeler's on my Vulcan. I've had them on for 5000 miles. http://www.keithert.com/pics/vulcan/Photo_090509_010a.JPG
  10. I've seen cages mounted to either a luggage rack or even a separate trailer. With the RSV remove the trunk and mount a small dog carrier.
  11. I'm looking for riding gear for my 6 year old son. He doesn't ride a lot yet but I want him to have good gear for the short rides we do. Where is a good site to buy kids jackets from? I'm probably going to get him an HJC offroad style helmet. That way he will have a chinbar for protection but not be as confined as a full face helmet can be.
  12. A website called web.archive.org has old versions of many websites from as far back as 1996. I did a search for the Venturers site and got to see some interesting threads from 2000 and 2001, back when we were one happy family and I still had a Venture! It was interesting reading that made me a bit nostalgic. There was one thread where I was boasting about only being 34. I wish I was 34! http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.venturers.org This link has a lot of discussions from 2001. http://web.archive.org/web/20010603194849rn_1/www.venturers.org/discus/ I did the search on the Venturers.org site and not this one because it was around longer ago.
  13. My 99 and the other 99 I test rode didn't have the issue. I'm glad mine didn't because I bought it sight unseen 800 miles from home.
  14. I traded my 83 for a 99 partially out of fear for the second gear issue. My bike had 40k on it at the time. The person I sold it to didn't start to have second gear issues until 65,000.
  15. I was an instructor from 2003 to 2005. I gave it up because it was a lot of work in addition to having a day job. Would make a fun retirement job though.
  16. The engine is 100 cc larger, but just as reliable. The second gear issue in the tranny was resolved when the motor went to 1300cc. The saddlebags and trunk are larger but not removable. I'd go for a 92 if the condition and price are right.
  17. I have an 06 MX-5 (Miata). It is a very fun car to drive and has been very reliable thus far. I've rented a Mazda 3 and was very impressed with it. Seemed like a little BMW. Compared to a Civic or Corolla it will have a slightly firmer ride and better handling.
  18. I had the Yamaha/Corbin seat on my 99 back in 2000. We did a long trip on it immediately after purchase with no issues. However i also had no issues with the stock seat so I sold the Corbin. The Venture is the ONLY bike I can say I've had no issues with the stock seat on! I had a center stand on my Venture also. The person that made it stopped doing so long ago. I really liked the stand though. I'd pay what Rivco wants for one.
  19. I have worked with Lonnie on a backrest for my Vulcan 1500. He custom made a bracket for me and it worked great. He says it is not adjustable for insurance reasons. The bracket can be bent a bit to suit your taste. For a new design he will give the backrest for free to the person that brings him the bike to fabricate off of.
  20. I think they look kind of like a modernized 1st gen Venture from the side. If it weren't that I've given up on faired bikes I'd consider one. Their new models really look nice though, except for the price. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/epic_mcy/250/83_venture_250.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:HP63CONAb7UmAM:http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery%2520C/Victory%2520Vision%2520Street.jpg
  21. How did the Venture do? I rode mine in some twisty areas of Northeast Missouri a few years ago and found it to be quite tiring keeping up with all the curves while going at a decent clip. I was looking forward to straight aways after an hour or so.
  22. I'd recommend to go get it. I bought my nearly new 99 Venture in Philadelphia and rode it back to Chicago. I made it home in 24 hours including a 6 hour layover at a hotel. Distance is no issue on an RSV.
  23. Does anyone have a picture of a Venture seat on a Royal Star?
