  1. i want to thank freebird for what he offered and did for me...we were leaving on a blue ridge pkwy/ natchez trace may 2....of course, this had been planned for a year for vacation......4 days before leaving, the left rear coil failed ...and the dealer says may 12 backorder......my vacaton days are set a year in advance, there is no changing.....long story short...freebird sent me a spare coil, next day service.....no charge.....although , it turned out i didn't need it.....doesn't matter....it was there if i did....THANKS FREEBIRD>>> here's why i didn't need the coil....the service manager along with yamaha reps. ok'd a swap from another new bike from another dealership until my coil came in....so that coil actually made it and i picked the bike up may 1 and left may 2...on schedule......this service manager's name is ed and he works for yamaha of camp hill....this guy also warrantied my battery.......which failed in one year........so there are some good dealers out there........hope ed stays around........so thanks also to this service manager and camp hill of Pa. volts = amps . resistance.........ok..i'm showing 13.8 volts at cruising...... as i turn on accessories ( heated clothes ) etc. the voltage drops to the point where it appears i'm showing about 12.2....maybe even closer to 12....i noticed my gloves were not getting all that warm and i also wasn't using my heated pant liners, which would add more load............so is the system operating correctly.......this is a brand new battery and i have the buckeye stator......my guess is i have resistance somewhere???.......all connections have been checked.......my battery never ran down... i also run passing lamps and a run/turn/brake light system..........how can i test for proper amp output from the stator......
  2. Good Morning all, I had my 08 venture in for the first service this week and was talking to the service writer about a set of slip-ons I saw on a RSV when I bought mine in january. He was not sure of the brand but told me they were shochrome or shoguns. I have not talked to parts to get the name or price yet.Twin 1 1/2 pipes per side with good mellow tone. The queston is He told me they have to rejet the carbs and being there is no kit they have to make up their own. I thought I seen on one of threads that as long as you do not change the header pipe you do not have to rejet these V-4's. Am I being told a dealer lie or is there a chance he is telling the truth. He was not happy when I told him I would be putting the pipes on myself. I took it in for the first service but will be doing my own from now on. With the help of any of you guys if I find myself stumped on some of the maintance. Thanks for any help I can get on the slip-on problem. Richard
  3. I'm thinking about flying in to Cleveland, OH to buy a Venture and riding it home to Georgia. I was just wondering if there was anyone close by who could check it over for me before I make the trip up there. I don't suspect any real issues, but it would be nice to have someone lay hands on it. The owner did say he thought I would need to replace the rear shock, and has adjusted his price for this. He said service was done at the dealer, so I'll check with the Yamaha dealers nearby and see what I can learn. I guess I could arrange for an inspection by the dealer as another option. The bike is located about 30 miles from Cleveland in Chardon OH. Thanks! James
  4. Is anyone else having trouble bringing up the 1st gen service manuals and parts diagrams in the 1st gen tech library? I just tried to see a wiring schematic of the later 1st gens anti-dive system and none of the manuals will come up. I have the early 1st gens repair manual but it doesn't have the schematics for the later first gens. I need to compare. Dick
  5. I just recieved a paper service manual for an 09 RSTD for $30.00 to my door from Riggs Kwong manualwizard1970@yahoo.com TC:hurts:
  6. I'm hoping the infinite wisdom here can help me with this. When I really jump on it and get the rpms up, my oil light comes on. At my last service (20K) I mentioned this and they said they couldn't duplicate it, but it still does it every time I jump on it (not that often). I thought it might be that I didn't have quite enough oil in it, so I added a little to no effect. Anyone else have this problem? What did you do about it? I'm now due for my 24K service and want to mention it again, but my thinking is that they never tested it the first time. I just don't like when an idiot light comes on because I know it's talking to me. Thanks in advance.
  7. Thought I would post this information here for any of our member Vets who are planning on drawing their Social Security. Anyone who has served on active duty prior to January 2002 is qualified for a higher SS payment because of their military service at any time during the period of 1957 through 2001. You can qualify for up to $1,200.00 per year of earning creidits applied at time of application. This can make a substantial difference in your month social security payment upon retirement. You must bring your DD-214 to the SS office. and you must ask for this benefit to receive it. This is not just for military retirees, but for anyone having active duty service during the eligability period. But You must ask for it. For additional information, go to www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm
  8. Trying to post these photo's Friend of mine, just sent me these photo's of his neighbors ride !! Old Mustang 2 wheeler, thought sombody might be interested in knowing that at least 2 of them are still in service !!!
  9. I'm wanting to replace the fluid, and check things out in the front forks of my 83 Venture. The first thing I need to do is figure out how to remove the plastic piece where the key and air valve are. I don't want to force something and end up braking it, but I can't find how to remove it in the service manual.
  10. Just an FYI on my most recent order from Southwest Moto Tire in Tucson, Arizona. I have ordered from them many times before and always received the tires within 2-3 days (standard free shipping). I always considered this fantastic service. I just placed an order for three tires last Wednesday - Fed-ex shipping confirmation estimates delivery NEXT Wednesday - full 7 days. May not be too bad, but it is a far cry from what I have come to expect from SWMT. Can't say if this is due to the new owners or just a strange set of circumstances, but thought I'd at least share the info. Goose
  11. I took my 06 RSTD in to the dealer today to have the cruise control worked on. I asked that they synch the carbs. I have been out all day since I dropped it off. When I came in I checked my messages and had one from the dealer (I will leave the dealers name unkown until I have a chance to see what else they come up with). Quote from the service manager "Techs say they cannot synch my carbs because I have only ONE". Am I worried about what else they are supposed to do! You Bet!
  12. I'm just curious if any of you use an online service such as ETrade, Scottrade, etc. to buy and sell stocks? I know that times are bad right now but I also think it's a GREAT time to make some money in the stock market if you invest wisely. I've never used an online service but there are a couple of stocks that I am intersted in right now.
  13. The wife has 65K on her 05 Chevy Colorado with the 5 cylinder motor. Truck runs great but this is the third time it has been in for a engine service light on. GM dealer says even though it's out of warranty they will fix it for free. Something about a head replacement,Valve stem wear issue. The dealer says about $2K in work at no charge.I heard they were extending the warranty to 7 years or 100K for this problem. Has anybody had this problem fixed? I'm concerned about long term life of that motor. I would like to get about 200K of service from it.The plan was to run it another 5 years after paying it off and convert a truck payment into a new house investment. So much for a plan.Does anybody know of the I5 engines getting high mileage out of that motor.
  14. OK, I've got my rear wheel off to get the rotor turned and brake pads replaced. I'm planning on replacing the 6304 bearing , but I noticed that there's another bearing also. In the service manual, it's number is NK 26 x 35 x 25/3A. Is it neccessary for me to replace this one as well? My bike is an '84 VR with 71,000 miles. Thanks!
  15. I was honored this morning to attend the retirement ceremony for Sargeant First Class Wilkinson, known to us here as SapperMedic. He leaves the U.S. Army after 25 years of service as a Combat Medic. Wilkie- thanks for your years of service and I hope you enjoy your riding season this year. I miss seeing your 1986 parked around the corner. Mocha is going to feel lonely when I get back to riding. JB

  17. Has anyone bought the RepairPro RSTD Service Repair Manual? I see them on eBay (like this current one) and wonder how well done it is. I have that other eBay manual, the Yamaha Service Manual in PDF, and I don't like it. It lacks certain information I'd think would be covered (recommended oil grade and filter size?). I'm hoping this CD-based thing will be better. Is it?
  18. Somebody tell me all the negative reasons why I should not dump my dsl and go satellite for my ISP. My only source of internet is Frontier dsl my phone provider. No other source exist other then satellite and dial up which I am on now.I have had nothing but problems with my dsl connections for 2 years and tech support is no help. When it runs good it downloads at 1200kb but slows down to a crawl 37kb yesterday. This happens at some point almost daily. Now I have a new problem it's totally dead, gone, out of service for the third weekend in a row.I had a long conversation with customer service and tech support yesterday morning. they offered a one time only $40 credit a months service fee but had no explanation for the failures.Every week when I call tech support I ask the same question. Is anybody else in the state of WV having a problem and the answer is NO nothing reported but my neighbors are complaining to.The phone company has retired all the people that knowed what they were doing and layed off the rest. Also no field service available on weekends M-F only. Just had to vent I'm on Ramona's labtop on dialup. My contract for dsl will be up in April for renewal.
  19. I just learned my favorite Yamaha dealer is going out of business. I don't know exactly when but everything is being liquidated. For those of you anywhere near Morris, IL you may want to check ProSource Motorsports. He was advertising new 08 Ventures for dealer cost. I am concerned now because he had a great service dept. Now where do I go for great service?
  20. Looking for feedback on local Yamaha service centers in the San Antonio/Hill country area. Not having any trouble with the bike right now. We just bought an RSV and hopefully will not need service for a long time to come. But would like to find the best available service center when needed. Thanks much, Ken
  21. I received this information from Douglas Harless and thought it was worth passing on. As you know, most cell phone providers charge extra if you call directory assistance. Google offers a free service that does the same thing. I haven't tried it yet but understand that it works very well. They even connect you. http://www.google.com/goog411/
  22. I am posting this up for Wingman, Jamie French. He is having to part with his beloved 2005 GW and matching trailer, anyone that has seen this bike knows the care that has been taken, it has regular service by a local shop here and is in immaculate condition. It has never been in an accident or dropped. This is a beautiful bike and has been well cared for. This GW has plenty of chrome accessories and tons of led's. It has am/fm, cd changer, cb radio with rear control, ring of fire light on front wheel and so much more and has custom pin striping. The pictures are posted, the bike is pretty dirty since he rode it last in the rain. All the chrome is Kurakyn all professionally done by the local Georgia Trike shop, which is where Jamie has all his service done. Also note that the trailer is painted and stripped to match the bike. Sure wish I had the bucks to take it off his hands. This is gonna be a deal for some lucky soul. Price with trailer is $13,500.00 Jamie can be contacted at 770-714-7190. If you have difficulty reaching him you can pm me or call me, my number is listed on the VR assistance list.
  23. I have recently developed a squeak in the rear suspension. I notice it mostly when getting off and on the bike, but it must be telling me something needs to be lubed. I dont have a service manual if someone can tell me what it need it would be very helpful
  24. Hello guys, Just wanted to put in my two cents worth. I took your advice and got new rubber for my '05 Venture. I went with the Avon Venom X plus I changed out the size on the front tire to the MT90B16 (130/90). I'm not sure how much of the improvement is from the new tread and tire and how much is from the narrower width, but this bike handles so much better now it's unbelievable. I also discovered in the process that my local dealer (Family Power Sports) here in San Angelo, TX. is selling their tires at dealer cost to try an build their service business. I got the tires for $105 on the front and $115 on the rear with no shipping cost. But if you are close enough to buy from them, DON'T HAVE THEM INSTALL THEM! Their service department sucks.
  25. If I buy this bike is someone near that can hold until I can get it I will pay for the service. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Venture-XVS12-1983-Yamaha-Venture-needs-work_W0QQitemZ130268423913QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_motorcycles?hash=item130268423913&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
