1. Finally, I am nearing the end of very long list of things that my fairly new to me 86 needed and that I wanted. From finding and fixing an oil leak to new pads, new tires, rebuilding the carbs, finding and repainting to match a few replacment body parts and numerous other things, starting yesterday I am finally on the road. But yesterday was really really hot. Temps were well over 105; my thermometer here at the house registered 108.7; but I rode anyway and two up at that. Went on about a 25 mile ride. Now to my concern. The Temp Guage was just a tad over 1/2 way and in stop and go traffic was 3/4 the way to the red and the fan was running more than it was off. Is this normal in these conditions or do I have another project in store for me? I will be heading up to the Intl Rally and I expect the temps to be well over 100 most of the time I am running in and through Texas. Should I pull the radiator and have it rebuilt? I changed coolant, am running Amsoil 20/50, carbs are right on. Did the needle mod installing three #4 washers and does this thing run strong. No leaks of any sorts. Looking for input here. Thanks to all.
2. Had it dyno'd and it is running way to lean up to 4k rpm. Above 4k starts running too rich. Having it rejetted and dyno tuned. Best on torque and hp was about 74 each. It ran like the harley I used to own. I expected more power and torque. Mech is rejetting and will let you know what the power difference is. My brother owns an '07 Venture so I will have something to compare with. Mech says I will walk off and leave him. Hope to gain significant power. Will not change pipes, loud pipes messes with my music listening. Has anyone put the performance jets and how well did the change work on the Venture.
3. 2 weeks ago I was ranting and cussing the Yamaha dealer here in Charleston. Today I took my RSTD to the dealer in Sumter,SC (Xtreme Sports) to see what they could tell me about my crappy running bike (which the Chas'n dealer said was running just fine.) They got the bike in the shop within 15 minutes of my arrival and 3 hours later I rode off with a great running motorcycle. I honestly was ready to trade this bike off for something ....almost anything....except a Stratoliner. It was so nice to find a service manager who cared and a mechanic who knows his trade and does it well. I will not hesitate to ride 100 miles to this dealer again if I need to....I am happy and satisfied!! Art
4. Bike is running strange, What do you think of the plugs?
5. Just wanted to give you all a heads up. We are parting out a running 1989 Venture on Ebay. 6-14thru 6-21-08 hess4less2007
6. Wife was having trouble with intercom today when I got home was checking it out Put controls on HS with out thrm connected and had sound comming from rear speakers not loud but if bike is not running you can here it . any one else notice this or is thare some thing wrong in the wireing :confused013:
7. Took my first ride Saturday and the bike started shutting off. Got caught at a light and it quit and had to do the tip toe walk to get it out of traffic. Got it started and as long as I kept it revved up, I could keep it running. Sunday, I took the battery tray out and cleaned the connections on the TCI and tightened the terminals. I also took the kill switch off and cleaned with contact cleaner. I also put my new diaphragms in and a new set of plugs. It still was acting up. When I got home today I took a good look at the electrical schematic. I pulled the windshield and headlight and found the emergency cut off switch, the 60º tilt switch, out of the rubber holder and hanging down. I took it apart and checked it inside and tightened the terminals and reinstalled it with a spacer to hold it tight. I started the bike and it sounded very good, very crisp and responsive. I put it back together and as I started down the driveway, it went dead. I got it started and made a loop around the block and at about 30mph in 3rd gear I let off the gas. The tach dropped to Zero and it was dead. I flipped the kill switch on and off and it backfired and it was running again. I got it back home and again took the kill switch off and checked it out. When checking voltage across the two wires, there is no voltage drop across the two wires. I really thought I had found the problem with the tilt switch hanging down, but obviously that was not the problem. I don't know anything about the TCI and when it is running, it runs very good, especially with the new diaphragms. I also pulled the pressure sensor hose loose and put a vacuum pump on it and it would rev up when vacuum was applied. I also blew cleaner through the #2 carb tube and it was open. I also checked the clutch lever and it is out all the way. Tomorrow I intend to start the check on the TCI, but for anyone that knows about these things, is it common for it to be intermittent and run so good when it is running? It is obvious I am loosing electrical power somewhere, but with it being intermittent, I am having a problem isolating the problem. I appreciate any suggestions. RandyA

Inspiration

Been gone from the site for a while, computer crapped out on me and I have been busy busy busy. I haven't gotten very far on the 84, and she is sitting all dejected, and lonesome. The ol XS is running strong and it is hard to get in the restoring mood during the good weather and such. I guess I need inspiration, you guys got any for sale?
9. Here is the diagram and Radio Shack part numbers for converting a single wire tail light (pilot LED light bar) to be feed as a brake and running light. Note the diodes are directional feed, so the end that has the red tape/silver band goes towards the light. I saved this from before the crash and I don't believe it has been posted again so now its here. I am running the Radio Shack parts on mine with no problems. Gary
10. Here's the progress on the wiring as of right now. I've just got 1 more connector to replace then wire in the new and improved wiring harness, plus tie some grounds and brown leads together. Unfortunately I'm running out of chrome wire loom so that part won't get done. Our local Pep Boys is out of stock but there is a website from the manufacturer, www.spectreperformance.com so I will order from them...
11. I was all set to get Goldie inspected Friday afternon. I pulled it out into the driveway and started it up, left it idling, and went in to get my wallet and helmet. Came out and smoke was rising from the side cover! Seems that I forgot to redress the power lead for the running lights on the chrome chin, and it was against the exhaust pipe. Stupid me!!!!! Now I get to chaqnge out the harness, and hope that the regulator, and my new high output stator, are still all right...
12. Just thought id mention it but a while back I had a post where a friend was going to make a set of fork deflectors for our RSV's. I have been running a temp/mock up set for about a month now, mostly to test the bracket strength. As far as I am concerned it held up extremely well. We test fitted another set today prior to polishing. They fit well but there is something in the bracket we would like to tweak a bit more for a more adjustable fit. If we can get it polished before Sunday I should have a set on my bike for display at the Daytona Meet and Eat. If all goes well, several more sets will be made with some mods to the mounting bracket and pics will be posted here. Time is a problem, or lack of it right now so I dont expect it to be real soon. Biggest hassle right now is running back and forth for my friend from Jax to Savannah to use the machine and back. But if it comes out as planned I think you all will be very satisfied with the finished product.
13. Morning all.. I have an 83 Std, that was new to me last year. I love the old girl and used it as often as I could on my daily 40 mile commute to work until the snow flew. When spring finally reached this part of the world a few weeks ago, I put the charged battery back in, changed the plugs (all looked good at the time), oil, etc. I had stored it with some Seafoam in the fuel, and have run 2 tanks through it in the last month. My issue is that it just doesn't seem to have the top end power it did. It doesn't accelerate nearly as fast as it used to. The exhaust note seeems to be ever so slightly lower (not a bog though). Hills are now noticeable. It's not the clutch slipping as the rpms don't climb as rapidly as they used to. Thinking it was carbs, I dosed her again with another can of Seafoam and went for a hard run on some quiet backroads. It accelerates, not with the "Jeez, I'd better hold on tighter" feeling it used to. It attained and easily held 150 km/hr (90-95 mph), and I backed down before it did. Should it get to that speed running on 3 cyclinders ? All four header pipes are hot. No popping or burbling at all on a decelleration. I changed the plug caps (trimmed the plug wire ends too), with no improvement. All 4 slides move evenly and smoothly when you hit the throttle and nothing is impeding their travel throughout the whole range of movement (checked each slide with my finger while not running). All 4 plugs are a nice tan colour. Air filter is freshly cleaned (re-usable foam) & re-oiled (K&N oil). Fuel filter was replaced when I got it, and looks clean now. Could it be timing - the boost sensor ? I am pretty sure I didn't gain 200+ lbs over the winter. Any thoughts would be muchly appreciated.
14. Well Dudes and Dudettes, Wizard of Wheels in Crete IL still hasn't returned my parts. It's been almost a year and I got so fed up I bought a new Goldwing. However, I'd still like to get the RSV running so that I can sell it, turn it into a chopper, or something fun. I searched high and low and finally figured out how to contact Yamaha Corporation headquatered in California. My idea was to get a parts list complete with prices, purchase the parts I need to at least get the bike running, and then sue the dealer for the total cost of replacement parts. Well, it seemed like a good idea, but was quickly shut down as Yamaha has a policy of not selling body parts to individuals -- only dealers! So, not only have I been royally screwed by the owner of Wizard of Wheels in Crete IL, but now I'm going to have to go to another dealer and pay a higher replacement price for what I need! This is wrong on many levels and it's making me crazy. So, if anyone has a bead on a pair of lower cowlings for a 99 RSV, please contact me. The bike will not run correctly without those two plastic pieces. There was a pair on eBay, but the price had an automatic bid attached and I wasn't going to get sucked into a bidding war with an unknown buyer. chuck
15. Hey guys I just added a new set of running lights to the bike. I wanted to move my pegs forward and down some more. I found these lights which are LED's and figured they would mount perfectly into the air vents and be totally out of the way. The air vents are still functional (if they actually do any good) and the lights are in the way of nothing. You can see in the pic of my bike how much lower I was able to get my peg down as the other side still had the old light in place at the time I took the pic. Let me know what you think. Paul
16. I am slowly getting this thing up and running. 86 VR 21000 miles. Does not leak when off or with key in on position. Shortly after I start the bike, gas starts running down the front coil of the rear shock and pukes out on the ground. I have pulled the fuel pump and tried to trace back all the gaslines I can see. Looks like it's leaking from above the rear shock mount and down the front of the shock? Cant see the actual leak. The PO left the tank on reserve and I have not moved it. I drained all the gas at the fuel pump and put a bit in today to get the bike running. Thanks for any suggestions.
17. This is my day to work on this bike. It is new to me, an 86 with 20,000 miles. When I picked it up, it wouldn't idle without choke, but ran pretty good on the road without choke. I just replaced the 4 diaphrams and did the 2 ss washer mod on the needles. 1 of the diaphragms was completely seperated from the slide and all had a few holes. Now the bike will not run without choke and if I rev it it wants to die. Will not stay running without choke and backfires a little while running. I have to adjust the idle with the choke. Seems like its running too lean. Trying to synch the carbs but can't get it to go without the choke. The indicators on the carbtune are moving but don't seem to be too high up on the gauge. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin
18. So when it comes to synching the carbs is this something that needs to be done on a routine basis or when a problem occurs? I've the the 04 RSV I purchased in 06 and have never had it done. I don't have any problems with the way it's running but with my long trip coming up I'm wondering if I should have it done.
19. Ok, I am curious how many folks are running the MU90B16 and if any uses the MT90B16? The best I can tell the "MU" is about a half inch wider at most. I alway ran the MU but just wondering if anyone is running the MT.
20. HI every one Im thinking of buying a Carbtune pro becouse I gust had the price quoted to my from my yam dealer $650 AU do you think I should allso buy pro color tune kit to see the color of the spark as it is running and could some one point me on how to do valve clerance and whot tool I nead THANKS PIPER
21. I have an 83 stock Venture (no cb or intercom) and the previous owner had installed a standard car radio in place of the original. I replaced it with a Kenwood KRC-38MR with remote control pad several years ago, and it has performed quite well. Then last summer I replaced the cycles' fuse block and rather than run everything off of one accessory feed I inserted a relay (energized by the accessory circuit) and added a secondary fuse block thru which I fed all of the accessories (so I could split out various light circuits separate from the radio circuit). The new radio circuit was fused at 5 amps and was connected to a noise suppressor that was there previously. Everything worked fine when I was testing it in the garage on the accessory position (without the cycle running). The first time I ventured out (no pun intended) and attempted to turn the radio on, I could not hear anything until I stopped - then it was making stuttering sounds, as if it was getting intermittent power in rapid succession. Within a few minutes I got no sound at all - lights are on and it changes stations, etc, but no audio output. Fuses are all intact. The leads to the speakers are reading a constant 6 volts. I verified the voltage going to the radio appears to be constant as far my cheapo voltmeter shows (slightly higher than 12 volts when the engine is running, as I would expect). So the first question is whether anyone has any ideas as to what I have done to the radio itself, and more importantly, is there a flaw in my design of running the radio off of a relay circuit? Am I possibly getting voltage spikes that are somehow filtered thru the accessory circuit, but being reintroduced via the relay? Assuming I have blown the radio, any suggestions as to a reasonable relacement with an eye for future additions of a GPS, MP3, cell phone and headset interfaces, etc... on a bike that has no built-in provision for those things currently? Thanks for any suggestions or ideas, Mark (Windrider1983).
22. I hope someone can help me - I brought my 85 VR out of storage recently and changed a starter that went last year (probably from driving thru torrential rains and hail last summer)(too close to the tornado!). I got the bike last year and I love it - I've fixed many things so far and want to get back to tip top shape - it's got GOBS of power. I removed the air cleaner and squirted some fuel into the carbs to get it started rite up!! Happy was I ! but it kept stalling. It will start and run on all cylinders when I squirt gas into it but it won't stay running. I hear and feel the fuel pump make a small noise and feel a bump when I turn the key on so I think it's working. The fuel filter is new as of last year and its transparent - I see white on the left side and orangy with fuel on the rite. The fuel gauge says it's full. I put Stabil gas stabiliser in it before winter. I looked for hours last nite on this site and read a lot of different posts and now I'm really confused as what to do first. I don't want to take it to the same dealer that wanted $1000.00 to fix my starter!!!!! I got it fixed for $107.35 - WHEW! I thot I'd be driving it home yesterday:doh:
23. Hello everyone, I made the mistake of having a friend adjust my carbs a few months ago. I have an '03 MRSV, running with K&Ns and all the pollution stuff plugged and rolled up. I also have the four tits stemming from the carbs plugged. I checked the spark plugs today and the bike is running extremely lean. My buddy does not remember where the mixture screws were at when he started turning them out a few months ago. I have been getting popping on decel too. So I turned out the mixture screws a complete 360 turn and the popping persists. I need to ride it for a while and check the plugs again. Can anyone tell me a good setting, for these screws, FROM BEING BOTTOMED OUT, while running with K&Ns and with the all the air polution stuff plugged? Many thanks in advance - Ponz
24. I seen in one of the motor bike cataloges a deer whistle you hard wire in so it makes the sound all the time when running, does anyone have one of these or know if they work?? Thanks:rudolf:
25. Just started the bike, (1987 VR), for the first time this season and before I decided to put the new tires on, I took it for a ride. Wasn't running great and when I looked down, there was a fast drip of gas out of one of the overflow tubs. The back carb on the clutch side is overflowing and running gas out. Think it had started to cause trouble last fall already but not to the point that it is now. How hard is it to work on the one carb, can I just remove and repair the one or can it be repair on the bike? I run sea foam through my bike quite often so don't think that will help. What is the easyest way to try to fix this problem? Thanks John
