  1. The audio system on my 99 just doesn't seem to have enough power through the headsets. I have some of the mid-range (pricewise) J & M headsets, and with the IC at it's highest setting we sometimes struggle to hear each other. In addition, the radio volume seems weak also. At full volume it is still none too loud. I am running Road King pipes, so the exhaust volume isn't the problem. It does seem that the CB has plenty of volume....it'll blow my ears out. Just seems like the audio system doesn't have enough output power. Is this typical of the RSV's? Oh....I forgot to add that when I am playing MP3's through my GPS's player function I can get plenty of volume. Of course, the GPS has a volume control for the output so I can crank it up. One more thing......does the IC on the RSV really NOT have a VOX control? I can't find it if it does.... That seems incredible that an IC system would not include a VOX adjustment. Thanks, Joe
  2. My eyes are starting to get really tired from looking at almost 20 pages of posts about GPS hookups, 12 volt power outlets, hooking direct to battery, not doing that, fuse, no fuse, etc, etc. I have a 2005 RSTD. Here's my question: The aux DC terminal under the seat has a brown lead and a black lead, the 12 volt power outlet has a red wire and white wire. Does it matter which color is hooked to what? Also, is the aux DC terminal already fuse protected? Just want to make sure I do this right because I still have 47 payments left on the bike Seems like a simple question but I have been told that I often do the simple things with a deal of difficulty.
  3. :think:I just purchased a new to me 1996 ROYAL STAR TC and would like to hard wire my ZUMO 550 . Is there any power closer than the bat. that is under the seat? Any help would be appreciated TOP CAT
  4. Had it dyno'd and it is running way to lean up to 4k rpm. Above 4k starts running too rich. Having it rejetted and dyno tuned. Best on torque and hp was about 74 each. It ran like the harley I used to own. I expected more power and torque. Mech is rejetting and will let you know what the power difference is. My brother owns an '07 Venture so I will have something to compare with. Mech says I will walk off and leave him. Hope to gain significant power. Will not change pipes, loud pipes messes with my music listening. Has anyone put the performance jets and how well did the change work on the Venture.
  5. When people have talked about the low end power on these 1200 motors, I felt like mine seemed to have more power (torque) than most. Mine at 25mph in 5th gear on flat ground would pull surprisingly strong compared to what other described about having to keep their bike above 3,000 rpm's. I also felt like at about 6,500 rpm's that the power was starting to taper off in that it was not pulling as hard. I know this bike pretty well as I have put 100,000 miles on it since I have had it for 13 years. I have patched the diaphragms a couple of times and it did seem to make it run a little better. With the new diaphragms, it is just opposite. Now, it feels a bit less torquey at low rpm's, but as I go over 3,000 rpm's in 1st gear at wide open throttle it now is almost scarey how quick it will pull to 8,000 rpm's. It now seems like just a few seconds in 1st and 2nd to 70 mph or more. I am wondering if I will get better gas mileage than before as I was getting from about 38 to 43, according to the road and my speeds. Now, if I am going to get anywhere near that good I am going to have to crank her down some as I am now catching myself looking for a place to crank it on. It's almost addictive how much pull it has as it is winding up and at 8,000 rpm's it is still pulling hard. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this change with new diaphragms? RandyA
  6. Where is the best place to tap in for power for my new Garmin 2720? I have the outer Fairing off at the moment for some other stuff... is there a good place to draw power from under there? Thanks
  7. Hi All, Just wondering if this is a common problem and/or a difficult one to troubleshoot. I push the on button, all lights come on then after a couple of secs they all go out but the power. This is normal so far but when I engage the set button while riding, nothing!! Any quick fixes? I do have a manual, just hoping it is simple. Thanks in advance, Kim
  8. Anyone do a permanent mount for a power socket using the auxiliary connection under the seat on the RSTD? Would like to mount close to the seat using a bracket. Any suggestions appreciated!
  9. I was all set to get Goldie inspected Friday afternon. I pulled it out into the driveway and started it up, left it idling, and went in to get my wallet and helmet. Came out and smoke was rising from the side cover! Seems that I forgot to redress the power lead for the running lights on the chrome chin, and it was against the exhaust pipe. Stupid me!!!!! Now I get to chaqnge out the harness, and hope that the regulator, and my new high output stator, are still all right...
  10. I'll be getting my Zumo 660 in the next few weeks. I'll be using the AUX plug at the back of the cassette player (I already have my iPod connected there) and I want to also disconnect the power from the cassette player and use that for the GPS. Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated!
  11. OK folks, the guy told me that the fuel gauge was out on the '89 but I just figured I would find a bad fuse or something. Actually, the entire computerized monitor is dead. NOTHING is working on it. Fuel gauge, warning indicators, even the clock below. I pulled it out last night and we resoldered all the pins on where the connectors plug in but still nothing at all. I then checked for power and according to the wiring diagram, the black wire is ground and I think it was red that was hot. Anyway, it is getting power when you turn on the key but nothing is working. Does anybody have a spare for sale or even that I could use to make sure that it's the monitor itself that is bad. Unless some of you have other ideas, I've about determined that the actual monitor is bad.
  12. I am contemplating buying a new Venture. A couple of dealers have some '08s they are trying to sell. So, what are some of the goods and bads of this bike? I have a VTX 1800, and by the time I get all the upgrades done, I'll be several thousand dollars into it, and it will be setup like the Venture. But the Venture is already done:) Here are a few of the things holding me back... 1. Carbuerated. Are you kidding me? This is 2009. I plan to ride this thing all over, and don't want to rejet just so I can ride up in Colorado. 4 Carbs...that would be a pain. 2. 1300 vs. my 1800. How is the power on this thing? It weighs as much as my VTX, and I don't want to be unhappy with the power. 3. Price. I just seems to me that a carbuerated 1300 touring bike is priced a little too high. Not that I want a Goldwing, but I can get a new one ('08) for only a thousand more. 4. Mileage. What could I get, realistically? 5. Anyone teach the MSF ERC course and use this for your demos? How does it do? Thoughts, inputs appreciated! Tell me what you think of this bike. Thanks.
  13. New member here. I'm needing to find a mech. around Logan Ohio that can get my carbs right. I've owned the bike since last May. When I first got it it was low on power so I took it to a mechanic but it was worse. Took it to another shop and the bike still wasn't right. Took it to an old school shop and it ran much better but still seemed low on power and would shake under load, but after 3 shops I drove it like it was and the bike served me well. 20,000 mile later it had less power and the fuel mileage dropped. I called around but noone seemed to be interested in working on it so I made a manometer and tried to sync them myself but made it worse. Can someone suggest a good mechanic or fellow venture owner that has a carbtune and knows how to adjust in my area. It's an 1983

    DC Power outlet

Where is the best location for a DC power outlet on the 1st Gen? Does the scoot generate enough power to run shch equipment as an air pump or other simple electrical devices? Would a power converter work on it to produce 110V?
  15. I rode my old 99 Vulcan 1500 Classic yesterday. I had sold it to my soon to be son-in-law. I have regretted selliing it to him from the start because I missed it. Boy do I remember the ride differently then what I experienced yesterday! I was MUCH rougher of a ride, it felt like I was on a 650ish bike - both power and weight. I could almost throw the thing around. Also, the power - My 07 Venture could run circles around it! Needless to say, I don't miss the old bike any longer. - Only the 'potato-potato' sound. craigr
  16. I attached a coax type power cable to my battery for my heated gloves and jacket. There is an in-line fuse rated at 15 Amps. I'm not sure what the actual Amps are in the cable. If the actual Amps are very low, then the heated gear won't achieve full capability. Gloves are supposed to draw about 2.3 Amps and jacket is supposed to draw about 3.5 Amps. This means I need about 6 Amps actual supplied to the power cable from the battery. Trying to figure out how to measure the actual Amps running through this power cable. My multimeter only measures voltage and resistance. For what it's worth I also have my GPS wired to the battery and the revco air horn. My kuryakin voltmeter is wired to the fairing power socket. Any help would be appreciated. David
  17. I'm looking for a Power Commander for my Royal Star Midnight Venture 2007, if some of you had install this let me know if it's good for you. I had one on my old bike it was good, more power but it was on my Kawasaki Nomad 2003 with fuel injection. On my bike with carburators i wonder if it's good. Please give me your opinion. Thank's, Louis
  18. Howdy. I just bought an 06 RSV, 5000 miles. Got in December so I was unable to test ride. Took it on it's first ride this season and it started and idled just fine, cruised around town 30mph fine. But when we went down the highway, and got about 45 or so, she wasn't feeling well. The bike sputtered, lost power, and could barley move itself under power. I tried pulling the choke in/out,had no effect. While going down the road and letting off throttle, it would stall again. I drained old gas, added sea-foam/new gas to tank. Tried again, same result. The other question I had was with the fuel pump. I noticed a few weeks ago while I was playin with the bike in the garage as soon as I turned the key on, I heard something running under the cover below the battery, that sounded like a little air compressor. Since I've tried to ride today, I haven't heard that at all. Should I hear the pump run each time you turn the key on? I plan on changing fuel filter anyway, but wasn't sure if my pump is junk. It always starts and idles great, so I was thinking either the filter or pump was the issue, or the mains on a carb or two is gummed. Thanks in advance for any ideas.... Chad
  19. My ignition switch is acting weird. It only works when IN BETWEEN the ACCESSORY position and the RUN position. It takes a little finagling to get it in the right spot. Then I'm afraid I'm gonna hit a bump and it will fall out of the spot and I'll lose all power. Is there a way to rebuild/refurbish it? I'd kinda like to eliminate it as an electrical source and replace with a discreet switch somewhere. I'd keep it for the lock feature, though. Any thoughts on how to do this? I'd love to have a switch that turns on the brake & running lights for those nights when I pull over on the road. And another to power the ignition...just like the General Lee. ```````````````````` On another vein, I seem to recall mods being done to reduce the electrical load through the switch...can someone help me out with those mods? What they are, how they're done and the benefits. (This is in case I just replace the switch itself.) Thanks gang!

  21. I finally got my first ride of the year in today. We had either bad weather or I was under the weather for the first few weekends of the year. I just wanted to say thanks to all the contributors on the site. Over the winter I've replaced and balanced both tires, pulled and lubed the shaft splines/hub, synced the carbs, put in a new power port for my GPS and various other do-it-yourself jobs all from information garnered on the site. You all have been a great source of info and support. I hope I will help someone else along the way someday too! This site is the best!
  22. Hi Guys I haven't had the need yet, but I would like to know if there are significant risks with jumping my Venture with either a portable power supply unit, or from a passenger vehicle. If I happened to be out in the middle of nowhere and I was stuck with a dead battery, would it be okay to jump my bike's battery with anything besides besides another motorcycle? Or, could the potential consequences from such an attempt, make it not even worth taking the risk? I figure that it would be best to find out these answers before I need to make a decision. Once again, the state of my battery right now is just fine, and I haven't had any problems with it. It's currently hooked-up to a Battery-Tender and the bike is parked in a closed garage. I just want to know about this just in case I am faced with the need to make a decision sometime in the future. Thanks & Be Warm! Pete.
  23. Need suggestions, advice, or here's how I did it's on where to mount an aux power socket (cigerette Lighter type plug) on an 07 RSTD. Want to wire up and mount something near the handle bars to charge cell phone, power gps etc. Prefer the economical route (have looked at the nice $100 handlebar mounts, but I want to do something that'll cost a bit less.) Any ideas, suggestions, pics???
  24. OK...here's the continuation of my Christmas Story. As I mentioned in another post yesterday, my wife bought me a TomTom Rider 2 for Christmas. She was so excited that she had surprised me with something that I had wanted (a GPS) for a while now. The problem was, I spent all day yesterday messing with it and could NOT get it to power up. Then I got an email from BradT telling me that another member here had bought the same unit and that he had to hold the power button in HARD to get it to power on. So after reading his email this morning I took it out of the box again and pushed the button VERY HARD and sure enough, it came on in about 2 seconds. All is well. I then played with it for about 30 minutes but pretty much already knew that I was going to return it. The problem is that the TomTom Rider does not have an audio out jack or a built in speaker. The only way to use the voice prompts is to use the included bluetooth headset. That means that not only would I have to buy my wife a bluetooth headset but then some sort of hardware to convert the existing audion system of the RSV to bluetooth in order to use the headsets for the intercom, sterieo, etc. I think that TomTom really missed the mark with this setup. I ended up heading to Best Buy about 10:00 this morning to return the unit. The nice young lady asked me if there was anything wrong with it and I said well the main thing is that it's just not compatible with my bike. She then informed me that there would be a 15% "restocking" fee. I said are you telling me that it is going to cost me about $85.00 to return this product. She replied yes, all the stores do that. I said NO...Walmart doesn't. At any rate, I then asked her what the policy is if the unit is bad and she replied that there would be no restocking fee in that case. I said OK then....I can't get it to turn on. She said that she would have to test it and verify that fact to which I replied...PLEASE...do that now. She took it out of the box and pressed the power button and sure enough, it wouldn't turn on. She took out the AC Adapter and plugged it in and again...it would not turn on. I didn't tell her to press very hard on the button. She shrugged and said hmmmmm.....it must be defective and then gave me a full refund. I'm sure glad that TomTom makes them hard to power up. So now I'm on the fence. I'm trying to decide between the Garmin Zumo 550 and the 450. I know that the popular choice here is the 550 but after comparing them, I don't know that I can justify the extra $300.00. I don't want the XM capabilities and the only other thing that I see is text to voice. Am I missing anything?
  25. I am getting ready to split the faring (first time by my self). I found the write up by Squidley expaining this is done and how to install the spilt audio cable so that I can install my new Zumo 550. My question is this, can I just tap into the electrical power behind the power outlet inside the faring for my GPS power or should I get the power from somewhere else? Thanks---
