  1. 1985 VR, started hearing a clappy noise at start up and would quiet down after warmed up. i thought it was the "H" Pipe rattle eveyone complaines about and since it was the end of the season I didnt think too much of it. However I have been going to start the bike up at least once a month and letting it reach operating temp before shutting down. This last time I was starting think maybe my clappy noise was engine related and not exhaust. Below is a link to the video I just shot from a cold start and walk around trying to see if I could pin point where the clappy noise was comming from. I am hoping someone here with more experience is able to recognize the sound and tell me if it's exhaust or engine. I am hopping for exhaust as I plan on doing the HD muffler MOD and weld up the "H" pipe in the early spring. Thanks for your help. please use the link below to see the youtube video. 2. I'm trying to figure out what everything is before replacing my fuse box (I ordered the kit SkyDoc sells in classifieds). I've got a couple of items that don't make sense to me and maybe you can help. First off, there's a device that's attached to both terminals. I suspect it might be a noise reducer or some such, but it would be nice if someone knows for sure. The other is a blue wire that terminates on the Batt. + and then is connected to a White/Red wire in the main harness behind (or in front of) the battery. I disconnected it from the battery and everything 'seems' to work OK. Again, I'd appreciate any input here... http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/83%20Venture%20Royale/fusepanel.jpg
  3. When I release the clutch on my 99 RSV I get a pop or click from the master cylinder, it appears to me that it is the boot around the push-rod making the noise. I have plenty of fluid and the clutch is working fine except the noise. I never noticed it before today, however I did not have the engine running when I noticed it so it may have been around for awhile. Do I need to start thinking about rebuilding the master cylinder? Has anyone else experienced this? I am planning to change the fluid Sunday to see if that helps.
  4. I've got 34000 miles on my 2004 midnight and I just noticed a new noise coming from the left side of the engine when at idle. Almost like a scraping or squeaking a few times a second but lessens when the clutch is pulled in or in neutral. Could it be the clutch wearing out or maybe just needs adjustment? When switching from neutral into first it grabs a little but always has. Any ideas? Thanks.
  5. Hey guys, Wanted to pass a long some pics of the change over from the stock mufflers. Used the template measurements from earlier posts for the brackets and it worked great. I left the baffles intact on the RK cans for now as some guys mentioned the sound gets better with some miles - can always go back later and pop out one or both of them if I want more noise. Picked up the cans on Craiglist for $20 and $40 for the clamps so not a bad mod cost wise and took a short run yesterday and the sound is definitely better. The info on this site is invaluable - thanks to everyone. By the way '08 RSV I bought a month ago with 1600K on her - now 3600.
  6. So I was riding home and about 50 mi or so from home I started noticing a klunk when i would go from on power to off power, figured i would check it out when i got home but the bike had other ideas, i was coming around a corner and let off the gas, got back on the throttle and nothing but a BAD grinding noise, the bike seems to go in and out of all gears just fine but no power to the wheel and a bad grinding noise if put into any gear when running, can anyone tell me what i might be up aginst before i start tearing this thing apart?
  7. Hey guys, got a problem I hope y'all can help me with. I've got a set of J&M headsets in Nolen helmets. I am quite pleased with them so far, however today when riding I noted I was getting engine noise (static) through the headset. It wasn't "terrible" but was darn annoying. Anyway, while i was stopped I went to adjust the intercom volume. when I hooked my headset back up I immediately encounted an Unbelievable LOUD SHRIEK!!!! The volume of this was NOT affected by the volume control (at least that i could figure out. I disconnected/reconnect a couple times with NO luck in making it go away. I was running late for home so I disconnected and highballed back to the house. Anyway, does anybody have any ideas/suggestion concerning resolving these issues? I'd really appreciate it! THANKS!!!
  8. I just bought 2006 rstd with 30 day warranty.Returned to dealer because of noise coming from forks which really sounds like a broken spring to me.The suspension seems to work fine so service people say that its worn bushings which wouldnt be covered. Has anyone had this noise(almost like cracking sound) when pushing down on forks or hitting some bumps while riding?
  9. I have a 2008 Venture and up until now, everytime I turned the key on and moved the kill switch to the on position, I immediately heard a series of clicking noises which I presumed was the fuel relay. My battery had died and I recharged it and now it makes no clicking sound but it will start OK. Have I fried the relay or is that even what the noise was. I called the stealer and he said as long as it starts and runs it is nothing to worry about but I don't know. Please help.
  10. On the way home a new noise cropped up on my 88 after getting off the highway. Fairly loud gear whine when decel or coasting. Sounds as it is coming from rear end. Slightest bit of throttle quiets it right down. Checked pumpkin and engine oil, fine. Prior to this the bike made pretty much the same mechanical sounds as a brand new 2010 I took for a test drive. Some noise at coasting and decel but it definitely just got louder all of a sudden. This bike is new to me (64K mi now) so don't know what maintenance has been done to the splines drive pins etc. I'll pull it apart this weekend and have a look and slop some moly 60 in there. Is this a common noise (decel only) for dry splines and pins or am I looking at a bad rear pumpkin?
  11. With help from many members here and the great documentation on the site, I put on a new set of Dunlop E3's and regreased all the necessary spots although I did not take apart the drive shaft. The hub pins were badly rusted but I didnt see any other issues. So I take it out for a ride this morning to break in the tires and I have a new problem. A new noise coming from the rear end. Its a pulsating sound that changes with speed. If I pull the clutch at any speed the noise get far louder. I dont see any marks on the tires so I assume somethign is wrong with the drive train back there. Other then this issue, there are no problems with braking, engine, power handling. Any advice is appreciated. I'll be tearing it down again this morning.
  12. 87 venture, CB and AM radio work. FM makes static noise, but no stations pull in. Possible problem? thanks craig
  13. I just dont seem to be having any luck this year. I finally got the new brakes working. Talk about a nightmare but we wont get into that. The bike has been in the air for about 3 weeks now while I change the rear diff, Rear shock to a Works and add the R1 brakes. Finally I got to test drive it tonight and barely made it down the block and there is a hell of a rattle and rubbing noise under the stator cover. Now it came on all of a sudden and I dont have a explaination. Last year I added a High output stator but that was a year ago. I havent taken off the cover yet so Im just looking for some Ideas and things to look for. PS if I put a screwdriver against that cover I can actually feel the hitting. What do you think?
  14. For those of you that like to use earphones for your MP3 player as you ride, I highly recommend the Skull Candy brand of earphones! For comparison, I have tried the Apple earbuds, and the Philips earbuds. The Philips are absolutely bad as they amplify the wind noise to unbearable. The Apple earbuds are little better. The noise level is too high to enjoy the music. The Skull Candy earbuds are inexpensive (Got mine at Staples for $19) and they BLOCK out the windnoise, so much so that at medium volume I no longer hear the bike at all, and have to feel my way thru the gears. This is while rolling down the road at 70+ with no helmet. Using them with my Scorpion Exo-100 Half Helmet was even better, as the wires weren't whipping me in the windstream. :-D ~Bill
  15. After all I read about our whining problem, nothing seams to have made much sense:think: until now. I read this TECH Q&A in Rider magazine and thought some one else may be interested. Q: / recently purchased a used, one-owner 2007 Yamaha Royal Star Venture with the 1,300cc V-4 engine, still under factory warranty with 7,000 miles on it, I discovered (only after I brought it home and began to ride it) that as the engine speed increases there is an annoying "whine" to the motor. I have talked to two other Venture owners about this, and whine is so loud you can't hear the radio! Is this something I should take back to the dealer to have looked at, or is this truly a whine I have to live with? By the way, the noise is in the engine— not the drivetrain—because it is noticeable in neutral as the motor is revved. Dave Sugarbaker, Via E-mail A: The kind of noise you're describing usually comes from straight-cut gears, and the Venture has two sets: the gear pair that drives the clutch and the pair that drives the balancer shaft. The primary gears—the ones that drive the clutch—seem to be the problem here. Most manufacturers address the noise issue by using helical-cut gears (teeth that are at an angle rather than parallel to the shaft) or split gears (gear pairs that are slightly offset and spring loaded). Now, by using straight-cut gears, Yamaha has made accuracy in the machining of the gears highly critical. A driven gear (the one on the clutch hub) that's just a couple of thousandths of an inch too big will make a lot more noise. As with all mass-produced machinery there's a plus and minus tolerance, and ideally the gears will be matched so the tooth engagement is just right. The engineers have probably made sure that even if you got two "big" gears there would be enough tolerance in the shaft bearings that it wouldn't cause a bearing failure.I suggest you take your bike in to your favorite Yamaha dealer and get it looked at while it's still under warranty. Even if the mechanic can't find the problem (using Plastigauge to measure the clearance and then actually finding a specification to compare it to), you'll have documentation and if something breaks later you'll have something to fall back on.
  16. I know that the intercom is always hot, which means lots of road noise. Have just gotten some headsets and am really surprised how loud the wind/road noise is. Did some searches and see several possible remedies: A solution often proposed is the "mic mute" or similar product that mutes the mic until rider or passenger activates the microphones. Well and good, and seems to be well reviewed. But it seems to me that when the mic is on the issue of road and wind noise is still there. Another option would be helmet headsets that have noise canceling microphones. How well do these work and in fact, do they work to keep the background noise down? Or is that only when someone is actually talking? Finally, what about voice activated headsets? How well do they work? If the sensitivity is set to prevent the road noise do the people speaking have to shout in order to trigger the VOX? Lots of questions I know, but wonder what people think or have actually tried. Thanks in advance.
  17. Today on my way home from work my bike learned to make a really obnoxious noise. The noise is like a heavy grinding sound coming from the rear end area. It only makes this sound when decelerating with a lot of engine braking AND application of the rear brake. It does mot make this noise with just rear brake or just engine braking. The rear pads are at about 50% wear and the rotor looks smooth on both sides. The oil level is the rear is correct. Any ideas?
  18. Well I'm finally getting the dreaded chirp noise on my 02 midnight. With about 11 k miles on it I guess as time goes on it will get more pronounced. Checked with the dealer about the basket change and he said the noise can still be there but may move to a different rpm and speed, but most likely won't go away. I will admit it is getting quite annoying, even my wife is noticing it to. I've had the bike almost 3 years and have tried to really like the bike, but just can't seem to get it to grow on me if you know what I mean, and now this. I like the bike for the power, comfort, and roominess, but I just can't get a liking to this bike. Was over at the dealer last week and they have an 07 on the lot on consignment, nice bike, low miles, I asked why it was for sale and the sales guy said he really didn't know the guy just wants to sell it. I've considerd selling mine last fall and now the whine issue may be the deciding factor this year, if I can only convince my wife as she likes the bike. I've been using Amsoil 10w40 since I've had it and what is the opinions on going to a heavier oil or back to dino oil ? will it quiet the chirp? Dealer says the repairs parts and labor would be around 400.00. but it may or may not cure it. Bike is out of warranty so that's not an issue. Not sure what to do at this point, any suggestions or opinions may be helpfull, thanks...
  19. Trying to get a feel of how far we go between changes. I have used the Rotella about 10k now, changing every 5k. I am sure I could go a little longer, but by 5k, I begin to hear my shifitng. Fresh oil = less noise and smoother shifting.
  20. I have searched the site to death about the whine these bikes have but need a little clairification on it. Is the whine everyone talks about the gear noise when accelerating up through the gears? I get a loud whine or growl I would call it when going up through the gears, it softens up when cruising and then at higher speeds I don't hear much at all. Just checking to see if the growl is what everyone is calling a whine? I know mines not worn with only having 6,000 miles on it but just want to be sure nothing is wrong before the long summer trips. This is the first Venture I've owned since many years ago. My other bike is a Harley Road King and it makes all kinds of strange noises but that is normal for them. I have changed all my fluids except for the antifreeze which I am going to do tomorrow(can't believe I have to pull the tank to do it), and I am waiting on new tires as these are the original 2000 tires on it now. i just want to be sure I have covered everything before hitting the road. I have split the fairing and braced the windshield and repaired the tabs on the windshield chrome thanks to the info here. I have certianly gotten my money's worth out of the site already so I was glad to donate my 12.00. thanks to all who have helped me so far and I look forward to meeting some of you out there on the road one day.
  21. I recently just purchased a 2008 Rstd that was brand new left over with no miles on it. I drove it back from Arkansas to ohio which was about 800 miles and dumped the oil and put Aims oil in it. Immediately i noticed i tick noise when the motor was cold and when it warmed it didnt notice it as much. So took it to a local Yamaha dealer and he heard it as well and notified his rep. and they answered him that the covers around the motor enhance the motor noise sound. They took notice and wrote it down as a complaint of mine but thats as far as i got. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do beyond this? I know that manual says 26,000 miles valve adjustment is needed but i dont want to pay for an adjustment if i have too? any suggestions or thoughts about this?

  23. For those of you with a modular helmet AND headsets...any problems with radio or intercom because of wind noise? I've always worn a full face & just bought a set of HJC Symax II modular helmets. I knew modulars had more wind noise than a fullface, but after a test ride tonight in 20mph breeze, there's quite a bit more noise...so much in fact that I'm wondering if installing new J&M headsets is going to give decent results or be a waste of time. I'm guessing others out there are using a similar setup successfully but just wanted to verify while I can still return the helmets for refund if I choose.
  24. There seems to be a lot of discussion about the Bridgestones and road noise. I do have a noise issue that I am not sure is the rear tire. Between 40-50 MPH (loudest around 42-44) there is a howl from the rear end that I think is the tire but not sure. Just went over 1000 miles. I started noticing it around 700 miles but it could have been there earlier. Not as loud, or almost absent, the first 5 miles then it is there. Taking it to the dealer on Monday to check rear end fluid level but it was fine at the 600 mile change and there is nothing on the ground or wheel. It is more anyoning than anything else. It is defintely a howl and not a whine.
  25. I've been reading about a couple other noises and it got me thinking about my 06 RSTD and the kind of honking noise it makes when its iding higher than normal cold with the choke half on. It has a kind of rythem and is not there once I shut the choke off and its at a normal rpm. Any ideas?
