  1. As I scan the "watering hole", I keep seeing threads for things such as large and improved polished fork "wind" deflectors and keeping the "wind" off your knees deflectors and windshield squabbles on height to stop the "wind" and more! I just wonder, Whatever happened to the idea that on a motorcycle the whole experience is "to be in the wind" to smell the fresh air when you pass a pond or lake, to smell the fresh tilled fields and burning autumn leaves. Fresh cut hay and fields of clover are ever so pleasant. There's something to be said for the breeze on your skin,,,in your face.... It seems a shame to hide behind full face helmets a windshield, knee guards and fork deflectors all trussed up in designer "wind and water repellent" riding suits!,,,crap,,,if I wanted to be so isolated from the "wind" I guess I'd just as well cage it, but then,,,,I'd miss that unmistakable "sound" ! OH YEA I LOVE "THAT SOUND",,,,,,,,and,,,,,,,,,,"THE WIND" ,,,,, (It sings if you listen)! Renne:backinmyday:
  2. I am not a man who harbors a lot of unrealistic expectations; keeping it real just makes real contentment so much more likely. I am often pragmatic to a fault and will go with the flow when others might have made waves. Two weeks ago I found myself at a dealership looking at a 5 year old motorcycle that was really not the one I wanted; the one I was lusting after, but one that fit my needs AND my budget in a way that the one I really wanted won’t until after both my daughters are out of college. Beautiful, and powerful, and with only 5000 miles on the odometer obviously not much used. A small shallow scratch near the lock on the right saddle bag and a smallish dimple in her tank where someone dropped a cell phone were the only things that kept her from looking show-room new. And then there was the label. Right there on the tank where it had been carefully placed all those years ago before the first gas found her carbs. Honestly, I am not at all certain why it bothered me, but at a stop light on my test ride I found myself picking at the corners of it; which is probably not the best thing to be doing before one signs the papers. “Why would someone leave that label there?” I wondered “and how the heck am I going to get it off after all this time?” “Penny”, I named her right there in the show room because she shined like a new one; and for two weeks and over 1000 miles, some touring and some my normal commute, we have gotten to know each other. She is achingly pretty and oh so nice but not the one I thought I wanted and I fear that like two shy people completing a marriage arranged for them as children, we got off an awkward start. And then there was the label… staring at me every mile, reminding me to wear my helmet, picking at the corner of my vision. “Unclaimed”, I decided, the label makes her look unclaimed, as though the first guy who took her home from the dealer did not care enough about her to take the time to carefully peel it off and let her shiny black paint see the sun. For two weeks now, I have absentmindedly picked at it ,of course, and so it was worse than ever, dog eared and sticky. Until today, when after a couple of very nice rides together in the autumn sunshine I finally did battle with that label. After 5 or 6 years it was really not in any hurry to let go, it clung to her paint, just above her cute little dimple, for all that is was worth but I am a very patient man and so 4 fresh terry towels, a hair dryer, WD-40 and elbow grease eventually prevailed. As I took a fresh, clean, towel and removed the last vestiges of that label, it occurred to me that I have claimed her as my own and like that young “arranged” husband looking across the table at his new bride, I have realized that sometimes love does not come the way that we expect it to and that this thing, this shiny new thing devoid of that label, is just the thing I should have wanted all along.
  3. Southern California to San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge and back down...Hell of a day. I learned a valuable lesson though...dont lollygag around during the first few stops...push the mileage while you are fresh...my buddy and I took our sweet time and were forced to hit it hard the last 5 hours...but we did it!!!
  4. If your like me you probably use your laptop alot. Maybe sometimes while your eating southern BBQ finger foods like ribs. You know how your keyboard keys seems to get dirty and greasy. Or maybe you might leave the thing open for days and weeks at a time letting a layer of dust settle on the screen. Like I do. If so resist the urge to use a pressure washer to clean it up. This method of cleaning is highly over rated. At least for a laptop and may actually cause physical harm to this sensitive electronic device. Go figure:confused24:.....Who would have thunk it? But, that is exactly what a painting contractor did to mine at work the other day by the hands of his non english speaking hispanic pressure washer operator. This over achieving pressure washer operator in an attempt to impress the English speaking citizens of his new found country took it upon himself to go one step beyond the call of duty when pressure washing the concrete floor patio outside of my office. Evidently he thought the high wall fresh air intake grill 10 feet above the ground needed a little cleaning too so he hosed it down. Not thinking what happens to the water passing through the grill. Which happened to be the grilled opening to the fresh air intake plenum directly above my desk. My desk where my laptop was laying unsuspectingly open, on and collecting dust.....As it normally does.:bang head::bang head: I still do not understand how he knew my laptop was on the other side of that windowless wall :superman:and directly below that fresh air vent... and that it was open and dirty. But, his aim was pretty good because every drop of water managed to land on my dirty keyboard and screen, :95:missing entirely the company owner computer, walkie talkie radios and pagers laying directly alongside. Well needless to say a clean keyboard aint everything because it immediatly went blank, started humming, buzzing and rolled over dead. The good news is the contractor entertained me at Best Buy today while I got to pick out a shinney brand new laptop with all of the latest bells and whistles. He even springed for the cost of the Geek Squad doing the Vulcan mind melt routine to transfer the contents of my old hard drive to the new bigger hard drive on my new laptop computer.:mo money: The Geeks have also called to tell me that the Vulcan mind melt thing is complete and I can pick up my new internet ride anytime I wanted. So, in the morning before it gets hot I'm gonna ride the old scoot:7_6_3[1]: up to pick up my new puter. Cant wait to take her for a test ride........ Windows 7 no more Vista WOO HOOOOOO:cool10:

  6. Trying to get a feel of how far we go between changes. I have used the Rotella about 10k now, changing every 5k. I am sure I could go a little longer, but by 5k, I begin to hear my shifitng. Fresh oil = less noise and smoother shifting.

    brakes?

well finished what me and a friend could do on the bike where not the greatest mechanics in the world. but here is what we finaly got done after dealing witha shady mechanic from before 1 we got the tires mounted new dunlops same as origional 2 rotors from pinwall installed all 3 of them. and let me say what a great place to get parts. 3 fresh new plugs and cleaned the caps 4 fresh oil 5 brand new brake pads ok now heres the problem the dash shows the brakes fluid thing its on all the time not flashing just on?? brakes are great so not sure what we done wrong? also still a little poping and rough idle i need to get these carbs sync. all in all she running good not great but good. but like willie says on the road again. now to install the radio. old one works but missing buttons and that great cassette gave up the ghost got one of them too. then install the false tank. old one needs some repairs to the fuel door and the tab that holds it. need to fix that but got a replacement not same color. but going to fix the old one as it has a mural that a friend did before he passed away. but i can say im on the road with the venture. and with time and good friends here i will get it right.
  8. Its an 86 that has been sitting for a little over 2 years, I drained the gas, changed the oil, installed new battery, filled with fresh gas and she fired right up. What other maintenance should I do before I take her out?
  9. At last, I got my 1985 Venture in and had a good look at it. I picked it up off Kijiji in North Bay without seeing it but had a good feeling about the owner and what I saw in his photos. NOT A TRACE OF RUST ANYWHERE!! I don't think this old girl has ever seen rain or dust. Around 75,000KM on it. I picked it up for $1000.00 Canadian fully decked out as you can see from the photos in my album. All it needs is a fresh glass coat if I feel like it this winter. I took it apart to replace the rear signal light (supplies) and even in the in the hard to get at places there is no dirt. I even found a spare key the previous owner never knew about. He only had it serviced from a dealer in North Bay. I think I got a sweet deal. Put a fresh battery in it and it started right up. Very nice. I plan on changing the fluids breaks and such. OK I sound a bit exceeded but when you see a first gen in such good condition it calls for a party!! One question: What I can do to keep the rust away. Any suggestions since I plan to ride not hide it. The paint looks original so I hope to keep it. I will have some new photos soon.
  10. I have a 2 cycle leaf blower that I haven't run in 2 years - it starts just fine but wants to shut down after a few minutes - perhaps Carb cleaner ?? it has fresh gas mixture with some of the OLD gas. screwed up didn't I ??
  11. Have I got a chicken recipe for you! Take one noisy chicken (male) stick in a big deep pot. Beat the pot with a big wooden spoon for about 10 minutes then let it out and fricassee the sucker. THE End of that little bugger!:banana: This recipe is only good for early September and the chicken (male) must be fresh. No other ingredients are required. Please do not leave finger prints around the chicken neck! Your friend and co-conspirator Bubber
  12. Here are pictures of mine and 83blondies bikes after fresh paint
  13. Bubba and Mamma will be pulling out of Roanoke VA on Sep 5th or 6th for a short ride to Los Angeles, CA to visit our daughter, a USC student. I will be piloting my 04 RSV w/ piggybacker XL, my wife is choosing to ride on her own VS700 Intruder. Been going crazy all my spare time for last three weeks. Fresh E3's on the Venture, fresh D404's on her much lighter Intruder, Fresh plugs, oil, carbtunes on both, new fork seals in the intruder. Packed tools and spare parts tonite, including bearings and seals for the piggy. We will be following mostly I-40 going out, seeing Cross Ministries, Cadillac Ranch, Grand canyon, Rt 66, and the Wigwam Motel. Coming back thru Vegas, Denver, Badlands, meeting up with an FJR rider in Mission SD on Sep 19 for the ride home. The only way we can afford this trip is camping. Suggestions on free/cheap camping??? We have picked up a National Parks annual pass. So, more to come if anybody interested. Guess I need to learn to post pics.
  14. Anybody replaced just the rubber diaphragm on a first gen carb. I have a set of parts carbs and one of the plastic slides/tube has been crushed. From the looks of it the rubber is still fresh. I'm curious if the rubber can be taken off and used on another slide without distroying it???
  15. Ok...I'm fairly new to working on a bike and I am trying to learn all I can. In this learning experience I heard that the AIS can cause popping and backfiring, which I have. Initally I disregarded it as I planned on plugging it. But after a little further inspection I have noticed that it only occurs on the right side (at least when on the side stand). I found this out by reving the engine and letting off quickly, which in turn causes the backfire, and as soon as I let off, I glance at the pipes to see which one it is occuring with. With that said, would it still be the AIS (as I haven't plugged it yet) or could I have a leak somewhere on the right side. Bear in mind, I haven't put it on a jack to level it yet, I am just fishing for what to possibly look for. And for a little history on the bike, from my understanding it had sat for quite a while when it was trying to be sold and I am not to sure how ofter it was ran during that time. I know not enough for the battery because it was bad. But it does have a fresh tank of gas...
  16. :sign67:I've gotten some pretty good advice so far, so lets try again. '89vr. new clutch (yamaha oem). Changed fluid and bled-no air. New oil(when clutch was changed. After the bike warms up, the clutch STILL slips when I get on the throttle. I am fresh out of ideas. By the way, I cleaned out the little hole in the clutch resevoir. I feel like I'm bangin' my head against a wall on this.
