  1. http://www.coolwingrider.com/ OK I got my cooling vests in and tried them yesterday,102 degrees F , FANTASTIC but a little pricey,BUT worth it if you want to stay COOL AND DRY!!! I bought the 2 up special which includes 2 Vests and a set of cooling bags or whatever they are called PLUS they come with an additional set(2) that can be put in the cooler bag to change out later in the day. The thing I was afraid of is that the cooling gel packs would not do as they say BUT they do! In 20 minutes the gel packs are frozen in ice water,(It only takes 65 degrees water to refreeze)they say it will do it in a cooler with just ice,I dont know but I suspect it will. Now the cooler doesnt need to be that big, just a 6 pack cooler that fits on a luggage rack is good enough. The gel pacts DO NOT burn your skin even if placed against your skin in a frozen state..I dont know how..The best part of this whole thing is you stay TOTALLY DRY. TOTALLY!!!!! I felt like I was riding at 65-70 degrees for 2 hours then I changed them out, remember they recharge in 20 minutes. Quality is fantastic and IF ever the Gel bags break they are lifetime replacement. These folks have a 90 day return policy no questions ask if you do not like them for ANY reason, you just have to pay the freight back. This is my review,I am in no way affiliated with these folks,I just want to share what I think is the best of the best! Tom
  2. As some of you may remember, the wife and I took a trip to Niagara Falls last memorial day weekend for our anniversary. Had a great time and met some really nice people. This year is our tenth and I promised her a long time ago that I'd take her to Las Vegas. My treat in this trip is that we're renting a bike instead of a car to go and see the local sights. I just booked a Victory Vision. I rode one a while back for just a few minutes and am looking forward to putting some real miles on one. We want to ride out to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Any suggestions on the area are greatly appreciated.
  3. This "thing" that I bought is very close to going on the road. Lot's has been done, including shimming the valves and new gaskets. Shout out to skydoc_17 here for the loan of the kit. The job is easy, for anyone considering it, even if access is tight. Now it doesn't leak oil or water ... both cured. I took it for a test ride this morning and there are issues: First .... The cruise control is behaving normally. All the lights are doing exactly as they are supposed to. Clutch switch is operating normally. The only problem is that the cruise won't engage. Second, and more important .... I rode about seven miles at various speeds up to 70mph. It drives well once warm. On the over run, and at starting, it still pops and backfires. Suggestions welcome. It also has a hot starting problem. When I got back I shut off the engine. I then tried to re-start it within a couple of minutes .... nuttin'. The starter motor tried to turn, turned slowly, not enough to fire. For all the world it sounded like a flat battery. However, the battery is fully charged, and charging well. I pushed it into the shop ... that front braking is still binding a bit (caliper is going to have to be cleaned). Twenty minutes later I went out, pushed the button and it started, first try, with no hesitating. I am leaning towards a starter motor issue .... Maybe that has to come off for a refurb .... Am I right and is it hard to do ... removing it, that is?
  4. In a city park stood two statues, one female and the other male. These two statues faced each other for many years. Early one morning an angel appeared before the statues and said, "Since the two of you have been exemplary statues and have brought enjoyment to many people, I am giving you your greatest wish. I hereby give you the gift of life. You have 30 minutes to do whatever you desire." And with that command, the statues came to life. The two statues smiled at each other, ran toward some nearby woods and dove behind a couple of bushes. The angel smiled to himself as he listened to the two statues giggling, bushes rustling and twigs snapping. After 15 minutes, the two statues emerged from the bushes, satisfied and smiling. Puzzled, the angel looked at his watch and asked the statues, "You still have 15 minutes. Would you like to continue?" The male statue looked at the female and asked, "Do you want to do it again?" Smiling, the female statue said, "Sure. But this time YOU hold the pigeon down and I'LL poop on its head!"
  5. Thirdbike got me a set of carbs. I also learned that these are WAY harder to put on than take off. Two hours of disagreeing with them I had them on. A half hour later she was running. Just let it idle for about 2 minutes but that was all I needed. This sit and everyone here are great. Thank you all. Shaun
  6. Driving down the street and passed another toy. Took all of 30 minutes to check it out, and now it's in the stable.....
  7. I started my 89 Venture this afternoon and left it running at idle sped to warm up--came back a few minutes later and noticed a werrrrrring sound coming from the lower front of engine--sounded very strange so I began investigating while it was running--after a few minutes it just "shut down"-at about this same time I noticed that my "starter button" had stuck "in" when I started the bike----OK---what do you guys think I ruined when this happened----I tried to restart it and nothing----the battery was hot as fire and showed no charge--i have taken it out and placed it on battery tender charge for tonight---I was just wondering what I might have shorted out or burnt up when the Starter button stuck in......thanks.............Larry
  8. Ok last Friday I dumped the bike, I am fine just pissed my scoot isn't in mint condition anymore; although the scraps do add a bit of character. Anyway, I digress, is it normal for a raw gas smell and hard start after a tip over? I assume the answers to both are yes due to the balck magic of carbs. I ask this because as soon as I could get the bike back up and on the center stand I fired her up to confirm there was no case damage. Initial start was fine but about 20 minutes later after a shutdown of a few minutes it took quite a while to start (suppose it was flooded). I did find out the tilt sensor works great though. Anything else I should check before putting her back on the road? Thanks
  9. OK...it all started sometime on Friday afternoon. I got home from seeing some customers to find that my Internet was down. My son said that it had been down since around noon. Now I've had this DSL for a couple of years and it has been very stable, I don't think it has EVER been down and if so, for just a few minutes. So, I called Frontier to report the problem. Was almost through all the voice menus and crap when suddenly, it started working again. So I hung up and figured it was a glitch that they had already found. About 20 minutes later, it was off again. I waited for about an hour and called again. This time I finally got through to a tech and he did some checking on my line and etc. He then said that when he entered by account number, he got a pop-up telling him that Frontier was doing service upgrades to the system in my area and that is why it was down. I said OK...well...it would have been nice to receive some advanced notice but anyway, what is the ETA on having it up again. He said..."well...according to my screen...it should be back up by mid April". Now at this point, I was fairly sure that this guy had swam too long in the shallow end of the gene pool so I specifically asked him..."are you telling me that I'm not going to have any Internet service until April and that nobody would feel that it was necessary to let me know this". He said..."yes sir, that is correct". At that point, I nicely asked to speak to his supervisor. A few more minutes of waiting and his supervisor was on the line. She was a very nice lady and asked me what the problem was. I told her what had been said so far and she laughed and said..."I don't blame you for asking to speak to somebody else". She said that yes, there were service upgrades taking place and over the next couple of months there may be brief periods of slowness or very short down times but I would NOT be without Internet for any significant amounts of time. She did more tests and determined that there was indeed a problem with my line somewhere. She submitted a ticket and promised me that somebody would be out yesterday. Now according to my son, the service came back on later Friday evening and it was working fine when I got up on Saturday morning. Around 8:30 a.m. though, a Frontier service tech showed up. I told him that it was working fine right now but he said he would check it anyway. He told me that my service would be off for a few minutes while he checked the lines. He did some tests and told me that there was a problem somewhere with my line and he was going to put a toner on my line and go down the road to find the problem. He showed back up around 2:00 yesterday and said that he had determined that the line was bad down the road and was submitting a ticket to get the cable crew out here. I asked how long that would take and he had no idea but hopefully within a few days. WHAT? I said you know, my service was working fine when you showed up but hasn't worked since then and is still down. So...he said that he would see what he could do, maybe find another pair of wires to use. About an hour later he showed up again and said that all was working fine now. Maybe, but I still had no service. Just a blinking light on the modem showing it trying to connect. He said that didn't make sense because I had full signal at the box on my house. He checked inside the house at the jack where my modem was plugged in and it showed full signal also. He said he was going to make some calls and try to find out what it could be and he left again. He never showed up again and I never heard back from anybody but about an hour after he left, it started working again. So......I have no idea what was wrong. I don't know if there really was a bad cable. I don't know why it was working even when it was showing full signal. I don't know much of anything except that some of these people don't seem to know much about the jobs they are supposed to be doing.
  10. My Dell PC is now 11 years old and after an upgrade this past summer its finally starting to fail.....a slow death! Every 10 minutes it keeps re-booting all on its own. My daughter happened to call last week about the time this all started and asked if I wanted her 1 year old iMac.....Her husband bought her a newer one. Does a bear poop in the woods!! Long story short, they came by Tue night and swapped it out for me. Man, its great. I just have to adjust my way of thinking now a bit while I get used to this. Took all of 20 seconds for this to fire up where the old PC took at least 2 minutes. Cant believe just how fast this is. Tomorrow I go and buy a wireless router and an apple tv adapter and no more mail in dvd discs from Blockbuster!! Not too sure just how many new tricks this old dog can learn but ill give it a try.....
  11. I've always like David Feherty, but after watching this, he's moved way up the ladder for me. What an awesome way to honor the troops. The vid is a little over 7 minutes long but worth the watch if you have the time. http://www.thegolfchannel.com/human-energy/?select2=14760
  12. With all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a 65-year-old friend of mine was able to give birth. When she was discharged from the hospital and went home, I went to visit. 'May I see the new baby?' I asked 'Not yet,' She said 'I'll make coffee and we can visit for a while first.' Thirty minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?' 'No, not yet,' She said. After another few minutes had elapsed, I asked again, 'May I see the baby now?' 'No, not yet,' replied my friend. Growing very impatient, I asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?' 'WHEN HE CRIES!' she told me. 'WHEN HE CRIES?' I demanded. 'Why do I have to wait until he CRIES?' 'BECAUSE I FORGOT WHERE I PUT HIM, O.K.?!!'
  13. Today the wife and I completed our first full marathon 26.2miles. I had a great split (13.1 miles) of 2 hrs and 10 minutes. Stacy at age 41 was right on my heals. She passed me and finished with a time of 4 hrs and 50 minutes. My time was....................well.............I finished before the course closed and I'll leave it at that.
  14. Well, I took a few hours this evening to give a friend of mine a hand moving. She had a bunch of bulky and heavy items she couldn't get her self, so no big deal. Got them moved to her new place. On my way out, we were chatting in the front of her building when another young lady walked up. We all three talked for a few minutes (apparently this gal is the mother of three young boys). I saw one of them bolt out towards my bike and was a little uneasy because I didn't want him to get hurt. I got close behind him and saw his curious little hands and big eyes looking at himself in the [dirty] chrome parts that are just the right height for him to see him self. Despite the 'don't touch the shiny parts, they are really hot and WILL hurt you' the boy looked at me and said he really liked it and asked if it was mine. I responded "thank you very much, and yes it is". I mentioned again that he needs to take a step back because it is hot and it will hurt him. Well, he asked some other questions about it (as a curious little 4 year old would do) and I started fishing around in my trunk to get my helmet and stuff out so I could take off while he was once again was drawn to the shiny parts. Despite the additional reminder of you can look but don't touch, he turned and looked at his mom then looked back at himself and with his little pointer finger very quickly poked at the image of him self in the side of the cover that encases the clutch basket (all of this was within a matter of seconds and I couldn't get to him in time to stop him). My bike had sat there for no more than 10 minutes after being ridden for probably about an hour. It wasn't really hot, but it was hot enough that he learned his lesson. He didn't cry but he wasn't happy about it either. Anyways, by this time the other one was out asking questions too. They both wanted to go for a ride, but settled for sitting on it. They got a kick out of that. In addition to sitting on it, I suggested that if one of them wanted to hear something cool, push this little black button... The air-horn blasted and boy that surprised them both (and the mother too). Anyways, the 10 or 15 minutes I spent answering their questions and letting them ooo and ahh, really reminded me of what it was like to be that age and be so excited to head to my grandparents house. I would always get a ride on my grandpa's wing when we went over there and I always remember how excited my grandpa was when I would ask him about his bike. These are not my kids, and I am a ways away from having kids but seeing how excited they were about my bike brought back some memories and I just thought I would share.
  15. I just returned from a 2000 mi trip on my trusty 1989 Venture. I was close to Canada so the mornings were chilly! Each morning when I would get to the bike there would be a spot, about the size of a small plate, of antifreeze under the right side of the motorcyle. I would top off the expansion tank and about 5 minutes later the leaking stopped and would not appear until the next morning. Now I am back in the Midwest and it has not leaked a drop since I returned. Any ideas?
  16. A 4 minute rebuild [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgwF8mdQwlw]YouTube - Rebuild a Jeep under 4 minutes[/ame]
  17. Well, I've been looking at this site for a while, and I couldn't find an answer. I have a '83, and the clock acts funny. When the bike is off, the clock displays the time, and keeps time accurately. Once you turn the ignition on, the minutes then act like seconds, i.e. if it showed 6:45, it will go 6:46, 6:47, 6:48 etc. in time with seconds. Once it reaches 6:59, it goes to 6:00, 6:01, etc. When you stop the bike, say 15 minutes later, where ever the seconds were, it'll go back to keeping time normally, but not at the right time. If you started at 6:45, rode for 10 minutes, and the seconds were at :23 when you turned it off, it'd now be 6:23 and keep accurate (but incorrect) time until you turned it back on. If you ride for over an hour, the hours will not change. So has anyone encountered this? -Andrew
  18. Just back from cabot trail east coast tour about 3000 miles for me. Here is the problem, mike bike (2002 midnight Venture-65000 miles) will run great for about 10 or 15 minutes then something happens and the floor boards, bars and even the seat sometimes start to shake or vibrate, sometimes very badly. performance also drops off, it is as if you are dragging a parachute behind the bike. It will go but you have to push it to make it go, normally this bike just wants to run with my little 165 pound body on it. The bike will run this way until you stop for gas or a drink at the side of the road then the cycle starts all over. The bike runs so fine for the few minutes it does and so badly the rest of the time (I would think it is dropping 1 or even 2 cylinders when it is running running its worst). The bike will also come back alive after running like crap for an hour, but usually only for a few minutes. Here is what I have done so far- Replaced coils, 3 sets of plugs, pulled carbs 4 times-last time I took out every valve even float valves soaked it over night, set floats according to Goose instructions, ran 5 cans of sea-foam (a couple of strong ones), sync'd carbs with morgan carbtune a dozen times or more, changed the fuel filter twice, new plug caps (NGK), Air filters have 5000 miles on them, ran with gas cap cocked a little, Any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated, I really love this bike, but I have spent more time working on it than riding it. If I can't come up with something there will be a wing or an ultra in my garage shortly. By the way I broke down and took it to the Yamaha dealer they said GET THIS- that's normal, that is the way those bikes run- UNBELIEVABLE! Most people would not last 1 hour riding down the hiway on this bike. All I can think of is maybe the fuel pump or the ignitor box. Any help from the great minds here would be greatly appreciated, I would really like to keep this bike. Thank you..
  19. Probably been posted before, but what the heck, I liked it! I am guessing it ain't to political for anybody but as long one reads it that OK. God Bless America and Canada and any other free nation that fights for it's freedom. If you don't know GOD, don't make stupid remarks!!!!!! A Canadian soldier was attending some college courses between duty tours. He had completed several missions in Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist, and a member of the ACLU. One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, GOD if you are real then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 min.' The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am GOD, I'm still waiting.' It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Soldier got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Soldier went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned, and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Soldier and asked, 'What in the world is the matter with you? 'Why did you do that?' The Soldier calmly replied, 'GOD was too busy today protecting Canada's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So He sent me.' The classroom erupted in cheers! BUBBER PS NEVER EVER PISS OFF the ONE that matter most!
  20. Here's a head scratcher.... Pre-oil change, my oil level was right to the top of the window with very little bubble. I got it nice and warm, got the bike to level on my lift, removed the fill cap, popped the drain bolt and pulled the old filter. I let everything drain for a good 30 minutes until the dripping all but stopped, and then put exactly 3.5 qts of new oil in it, including a little bit in the new filter as all good little mechanics do. After I fired it up for about 5 minutes and then let it sit, the window again showed that the oil was right to the top of the window when the bike was again level - virtually no bubble visible . Is it possible that even after all I did, that some old oil is still in the engine? If so, how do you get it fully drained? The old oil filled 3 of the empty quart containers and about 6oz. of a 4th. Not quite 3 1/2 quarts. Can't think of anything I did wrong, but this one's got me stumped.
  21. I'm on the road and my rear brakes are making a noise. Anyone out there know where I can find brake pads in this area? I did a google search, but I didn't have any luck. We are leaving the room in a few minutes, but I'll check back on here when I can. We will be staying in Christiansburg tonight. I don't really want to tear it down until I can find a set. Thanks
  22. I have only started looking and found the HJC IS-16 interesting. Has anyone an opinion on one of these that had worn one? One thing is a I noticed a year ago while skiing is that I develop anxiety with those close fitting sunglasses after about 10 minutes. I am wondering if I will experience the same thing with this helmet. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31%2BqLIkovnL._SL500_AA300_.jpg The attached image will give you an idea of the glasses I had a problem with. Dunno if it has to do with the curvature of the lens or not.
  23. I've never been real picky about the grade of gas I used in my bike, but since I got it out of the garage this spring, I've only been putting premium in it. I don't have the original factory manual that came with the bike, so I'm not sure, but I think 93 octane may be required. When I was using cheaper grades of gas my bike seemed like it started "hard" and you had to let it warm up for about 20 minutes before you could ride it. But since I've been using the expensive stuff it starts nice and smooth and is ready to go at the start. Not to mention it seems like it runs better in the high rpms range and seems like it has more get up and go. So is 93 octane required, or is it just good for my bike?
  24. I was in the curves around Romance, AR when the bike went squirrelly, not so bad as to lose control, but bad enough to where the back end was "swaying". I was doing about 55mph when this happened and slowed down to about 40mph...it seemed to be OK and then about 2 minutes later...it did it again only worse... I nursed it for another mile or two and then finally stopped in a church parking lot and looked at it and sure enough...it only had about 10 lbs in it. I went ahead and rode it to a gas station (not that much further down the road) and aired the tire up...it stayed up for about 20 minutes and then lost the air again. But I already had my brother coming after me with the trailer and we took the bike at 6:15pm up to the Yamaha store for a new tire. I could not find a puncture in the tire or any nails or any other objects in the tire, but the CENTER of the tire seemed to have cuts in various parts of the tire...but always DEAD CENTER. I am wondering if the tire was defective...I only have 1800 miles on the BIKE!! Has anyone else ever seen a tire do this? Anyway...now I know for sure what it feels like to have a tire go down... Wally
  25. Hey guys, In case you're wondering where I've been of late - have been doing a BIG audit of the amount of time I spend on-line and decided to wind it back considerably. Have down-sized my ISP subscription by 75% and self-imposed a 2GB limit. That's down from an unlimited plan. This PC used to run 18 hours a day. Now, whenever I do turn it on it's for 10 minutes or so - to check my Emails, do my banking and see what's happening on this site. Best thing about it all - I've found my bride in the loungeroom of an evening. (MY BAD!) So - I'm still here but not to the extent I used to be.
