  1. Always cracks me up. Well, as long as it's not costing me a bunch of money to make right. I just bought a dang near new HF Tag-A-Long right. I got it cheap enough. I knew when I looked at it I had a few things to deal with. The coupler was crushed into the tongue as the PO had not used washers to shim the couple and it has pulled in so tight the latch for the ball would not move without being pried down with a pry bar. I had to remove the hitch and the latch assembly to get it over the ball when I hooked up. Got that corrected today. One handed hookup now. When saw the trailer the first time I knew something was not right with the wiring. I'm no whiz kid when it comes to electrical but I was pretty sure there were too many wires coming into, through the frame and into the tailight housings. I was right. More than needed. There was an extra wire with a female crimp on connector that ran forward with the 4 wire trailer plug. My best guess at first glance was maybe an extra ground wire. I chased it today and it ran through the frame and was spliced and split into both taillight housings. Holes had been drilled and the wires ran inside. I pulled the lens off both sides and it all made sense. And extra 1156 bulb had been installed in both housings. Not to mention one of the 1156 bulbs had come apart and was laying in the bottom. I hooked up a fused jumper wire and powered the extra wire from the front. Blew da fuse. Pulled the wire and it was cut into where the wire ran thought the holes in the frame with zero protection. Nice. So I can kind of understand the thinking here...... maybe the PO just wanted a couple running lights at the rear. Went the hard way about it in my mind. Now when he hits his lights he had (2) 1157's, (2) 1156's and (4) 194 wedge bulbs lit up. Then add the brake lights and the voltmeter has to be taking a nose dive into the red. I'm seeing why the PO may have been happy to trade off the damn near new Tag-A-Long and be done with it. Can't hook it up, throwing sparks and some lights had quit working and the battery was probably taking a beating. I got to admit, I'm enjoying the old "His loss, my gain" moment. Oh, and I checked the zerks and one was not only missing but a plug had been installed in the hole. Nice touch. Mike
  2. I've read on this happening to others and could use a little input. My 03 Venture I have installed an HID headlight bulb I installed as instructed running Power and ground from Battery installing a switch with a small dash light to insure power and plugged into the original headlight connector, Now it lights right off but will go out some times as soon as I hit the road others times later down the road, once I get rolling on down a long ride it seems to stay though I haven't gone far when sun is down. I had noticed that the old h4 bulb(55w-100w) would seam to go dim then brighten before but had thought it only got bright when charging system kicked in as my driving lights work to keep road lit so maybe it was going out also. Now in my years of spinning wrenches though the years to me it sounds like a bad ground any input would help thanks.
  3. I need help BIG TIME. I replaced all my dash lights with LED bulbs. I was going to take a pix of my dash & noticed that the lights are all out. I tested the LEDs & they work elsewhere. I replaced one with the oem bulb & there is no power. My headlight IS working though. Is there a fuse that I am overlooking?? I gotta get this fixed tomorrow I have a meet & eat on saturday!
  4. I am wanting to add some LED accent lights to my '89 VR. I have read through the threads, online searches etc. What I am looking for is ideas of where to place them. I know I want under carriage ground effects but also how to best show of the lines of the VR around the engine and front etc. I plan on taking out my damaged side panel vents and replacing with clear lexan and the light the engine. My bike is the pearl white version and want to go with blue. What other areas do others highlight? I have not found many pictures of other VRs. Also, recommendations on the LED types, wattage etc. Thanks. Gary
  5. anyone replaced their bar lights with HID's? if so who do you recommend them from?
  6. I know this is not bike related BUT.... I am wondering if there are any RV techs out there. I have a Suburban NT-30sp furnace in my RV and am having troubles with it. I have ruled out propane supply as I can run my water heater, 3 burner stove and oven at the same time. When i request heat the blower motor will start running, (sounds and feels quite strong), I can hear the ignitor click than a thud from the solenoid, than the burner lights and will burn for maybe about 5 seconds and than the burner will go out. It will repeat this 2 more times than the furnace fan will shut off after a couple minutes. Can anyone help me out on this one? Rob
  7. I have rear running lights which are wired directly to the ACC fuse block thru an illuminated switch. (switch lights when rear lights are on) What I want to accomplish is to add a relay feeding this switch and a 2nd switch for my front running lights. I already have the 2nd illuminated switch mounted on the dash.....now I just need to know how to wire it up! I have this wiring diagram for relays (see attachement) but CAN or should I run 2 switches off one relay? and how would I do it?
  8. Currently on my 84 I have a few lights added to the oem setup. I have: 1. the rear light bar which has 8 Baron mini twin running lights 2. a pair of 50 watt driving lights 3. a small amp for my MP3 I have the factory radio turned off. When I drive around with just the amp, the OEM lights & the markers on everything is good. If I turn on the driving lights on the charging drops below 12 volt at 3000 rpm. if I shut them off goes to 13.5. Obviously the light are too much for the charging system. I'm going to replace the bulbs from 2 - 50 watt to something lower. Can somebody tell me what would be the max wattage I should use?
  9. and side lights for trailer today... didn't like the standard lights not bright enough...$39.00 @ HF for tail lights, side lights & wiring (which i didn't need, oh & license holder)
  10. hooked up... the only thing is my hazard lights don't work now ??? seems I saw a thread on the subject but can't find it.... hopefully i wont ever need'em ...
  11. Someone just HAD to send B2dad some new bling for his bike..at least thats what I call it. He calls it LIGHTS...go figure! (thanks Mike) Patti PS. they sure are bright tho! :ice_thy-vi101212101
  12. This is the 2 1/2 inch reflector that runs from side to side across the back of the Trunk Box. I CAREFULLY tried to lift the reflector off of the black plastic molding that it fits into. BUT....I guess I wasn't careful enough. I cracked it in one spot and broke a corner off it as well. I glued it back together but it still looks like....well.....like it has been broken and glued back together!!!!!! Does anyone have the reflector that would fit an 88 trunk box...or even a later one that has the lights instead of just the reflector? PLEASE? I've invested over $100 in LED's for the trunk (and other spots)...and I don't want it to end up looking like crap.
  13. 843.251.7789 Hi everyone. On big trip. Running lights out. Stuck in parking lot. Power at fuse is good. I desperately need someone who could possibly explain where else to look. Help! 86' Venture
  14. I have a question about a problem I'm having with my headlights Firstly, I have added a set of cheap walmart passing lights to my 89 Venture. I can be driving down the road with either my extra lights on or off and the little computer on my dash will blink on. I can turn off the passing lights and the trouble light will go off for a few minutes and then start blinking again. I installed a relay and tried to wire it the best that i can. The switch for the passing lights is the high/low switch for the dimmer switch on the left-side handlebar. BTW...my lights work fine. My question is: Has anyone else have this type of problem with this type of setup and what did you to alleviate the blinking light on the dash? It's starting to drive me nuts. Thank you gentlemen, I'd appreciate any help that you might think of. Ken
  15. Just got off the phone with the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) asking about the modulator's you can get for the rear brake lite. According to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, you CAN NOT have any device that provides a flashing red light. It goes on to say tapping the brakes is OK...so MY common sense thinking on this is that the law applies to a STEADY flash....that could be interpreted as impersonating a police vehicle. But a light that flashes 3 times then goes solid is no different than tapping the brakes to flash the driver behind...which I often do on the bike anyway. Anyway...the Sgt. I spoke to said it sounds very much like it would be up the the officer's discretion. So if you P.O'd the leo for some reason, he could nail you for the flasher. The back of my bike is lit up pretty good for running lights...but the only brake light is the factory installed rear brake light mounted on the fender. In the daylight I think it get lost so I'm thinking I'll use the reflector LED mod FlyingFool did up for the brake light and put a modulator on it anyway....and take my chances. I'd rather take my chances with an uncooperative LEO objecting to it than with John Q Public who might not see my brake lights .
  16. Ok tonight everything is working fine then I started getting a fast flash on right turn signal. Checked all lights and they are fine, left turn works normally. Any thoughts??
  17. I have nothing displaying on my cmu. Not even when turning ignition on, when it should go thru each item. It was working a month or two ago, but now nothing. Is there a common power wire for the display? The display lights up with the dash lights, but displays nothing else. While putting the bike back together, I did put a small gauge black ground wire on the positive battery terminal. (lesson learned: put down the tools when talking to your 8 year old daughter) The wire melted down, and i followed it to the main negative cable. It was in a factory crimp with a few other grounds. After that, I have had to run new wires on the taillights and brake lights on the positive side, not the ground. No fuses blew, and i don't see any other fried wires. Maybe some damaged wires that I can't see in the harness some where? Time for a harness? Coincidence? sun spots? UFO's?? :confused24:
  18. So I've had my 99 RSV completely apart for the last month and a half doing a really nice restoration on it along with some mods thanks to the help of WillBill1 on here. Things are starting to come back together, just got back all my parts from paint. Today we were working on getting all of the electrical back together and adding the Harley License Plate Frame on the back and installing a passing light bar and lights up front. Here's the problem.... all of the Hazard lights seem to be working as they should, however when we go to use the turn indicators none of them work and the flasher unit make a buzzing noise. Everything else works, passing lights, running lights ect. We have checked and double checked all connections and they all look good. Before taking the bike apart everything worked fine. What do you guys think the problem could be? Please Help!! :confused24:
  19. I had purchased one of the replacement turnsignal/brakelights for the reflector on the travel trunk on my 89 VR and never was happy with how much light the 4 194 bulbs put out for an additional brake light. I liked the idea of it up higher and more eye level with the cars behind me but just didnt do the job in my mind in getting their attention. So I have been on the lookout for more lighting for it for a while. I finally took the plunge and tried out some 12vdc strip LEDs in red. These are what is called a 5050 LED with 3 sources of light per LED housing and has 300 LEDs per 5 meter length. I ended up filling the rear of the housing with over a 100 leds and I must say it is now bright and noticeable. I purchased them off of Ebay for $26.00 shipping included from a China location. Here is the seller and he has lowered his price it appears. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Red-Waterproof-5050-300LED-5M-60LED-M-Light-Strip-12V-IP65-LED-LAMP-Car-Auto-/120894815654?pt=US_Car_Lighting&hash=item1c25e47da6 I feel that the light is just as bright if not brighter then the stock brake light and comes on quicker then the stock brake light also. I am thinking the next step is to try a modulator that has the lights at 33% power to work as a taillight and then flashes the LEDs for a bit and then goes solid. I really want to get their attention of those behind me. Here are some pictures of the setup. Let me know what you think. File 1 & 2 is how I set them in the housing. The LEDs are waterproof and have 3M sticky tape on the backside. They are able to be cut every 3 LED and have solder pads to attach wires to them. File 5 is the LEDs on but the red cover is not installed yet. File 6 is with the cover installed and the LEDs on and the overhead garage lights on. File 7 is with the cover installed and the LEDs on and the overhead garage lights off. Thanks Rick F.
  20. So made a few stops on way home tonight but had a strange thing happen as itried to leave my last stop. Did my usual click into N then hit start button and nothing, bit of a click but nothing, absolutely nothing radio off dash off lights off totally dead. After a bit oftime I turn key again dash lights up N lights up ,so ihit the start button and again click dead. So i check all relevant fuses everyone looks ok. I call a mate who lives nearby,he shows up with some extra tools and ofcourse I turn key everything works and bike bloodywell starts . I'm not sure what's the problem but have a suspicion its the starter relay. So my question to you guys is what do you think it is? or has this happened to you and what was the fix. I appreciate all and any input Gordie.
  21. after riding yesterday my head lights worked this morning i went out lights would not com on any answers
  22. Installed led's on the saddle bags the look great.
  23. How does a member become a service vendor on this site? Experienced in lowering RSV's both front and back. Also, installing gauges, tachs, air horns and passing lights. Have forty plus years working and riding on various brand motorcycles. Rider First, Harley Owner Second.
  24. Im in the process of installing a Venture trunk to my '06 RSTD. I know I can cut off the lock pins for the passenger sissy bar but I dont want to do that in case I ever want to remove the trunk and switch back to the cruiser look. So Im asking if anyone here has a pair of the chrome saddlebag brackets from a Venture that the trunk mount bolts to for sale. Ive looked on eBay but the sellers wont seperate and also scanned craigslist. Heres a pic of what I need... http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/948/17888f.jpg Also my bike is Pearl White and I need to paint the trunk does anyone know what automobile color is close it. I looked here but I dont want to pay $400 for base coat and paint. Also an idea I did to my RSTD was to put extra lights so I can be seen at night. I bought 2 packs of the 12" red and 1 pack of the blue LED lights at Autrozone. The have adhesive tape on them so no drilling. I cut the wires off of one set and soldered the two 12" pieces together to make them 24". Started at the back and ran them across the bottom of the saddles. I took the blue 12" and stuck one on each side under the tank on the inside of the flange where the tank is welded together. I get alot of complements on them abd believe me I can be seen and I only have $60 in the lights
  25. I had originally put the teardrop passing lights on my RSTD with the LED parking light / turn signal. I first had them with the wide side up but this looked rather bazarre relative to the headlight, so I flipped them. I had them this way until several close calls with autos and feedback that my turn signal was not well seen in the front. I had not changed the flasher so I was getting the rapid flash. I decided to swap to the Yamaha passing light and put the HD outer ring suggested on this site that gives the hooded look similar to the headlight. I had already moved the original front parking light / turn signals to the back to give me three across parking lights, so I purchased new original front parking light / turn signals but went with the yellow lenses as I liked these better than the white / clear. Here are some pics. Also, I did put in a relay along with a 3 fuse panel from Beaver Electric. It worked out great! I have made some other mods, some worked out some didn't. I'll post those over the next few days. Thanks so much to those on this site who helped me to find many products and ideas for using them. R.
