1. I posted before about installing the 2" Equus gauges on my Royal Star. Well I found a 2" tachometer that matches the other gauges very closely. I got it at Princess Auto on sale for $20, regular price is $35, so the price is right. It is a car tach but works great if you build the adapter harness shown on this site. There are about six different backlight colours that can be changed by pressing a button. The adapter harness is very easy and cheap to make and allows the use of car tachometers which are much cheaper than most motorcycle tachs, at least in Canada. Ride safe Doug
2. As many of you already know I started making an auxiliary harness for the 2nd Gen Royal Star Ventures a few months ago. These plug in between the connectors under the seat that connect the main harness to the fender harness and allow you to easily make connections to the taillight, brake light and turn signal circuits for adding more lights or attaching to a trailer harness. I am happy to announce that with the help of some folks here and also over on Delphi that I can now expand the offering to include 1996 to 2001 original Royal Stars, 2005 and up Tour Deluxe, V-Stars and Road Stars. I was finally able to obtain the second style connector used by Yamaha. You can see a photo of the basic RS Venture harness in the Second Gen Parts Classified section. I am sorry to say that I still have not found the connectors for the GEN I Ventures and Venture Royales, but I am still looking. Thanks again to all that have purchased harnesses already and for all of the positive feed back I have received on them. Please do ride safe.
3. well i have a 750 that the wiring harness had to be replaced. took old harness out and was putting newer one in. cant remember where all the wires in head lite bucket goes. any one have a picture of theirs. the wiring diagram i have stinks. will take all the help i can get. been buying parts here and there to put it back together. as caught on fire. been at it for a year now. have time to wire it now.:think: HELP lost
4. One of my harness customers found a video on YOU TUBE that recommended using the Hopkins-46255-Power-Taillight-Converter for connecting a 4 pin trailer harness to the 5 wire 2nd Gen Venture system, I reviewed the video and what info I could find on that converter and recommended that he purchase that unit as it should work. He has the Hoppy now but the color codes on his Hoppy do not match what the instruction sheet I found on line. I am sending him a harness in the morning, but I not able to help him determine which wires on the Hoppy connect to which wires on the harness. If the colors matched the instructions it would be easy, but his colors are different. Has any one else used the Hoppy 46255 on a 2nd Gen? Any help is appreciated.
5. I started that thread a while back on "The things you find" and it just kept going the farther I got into the New/Used HF Tag-Along I bought a while back. The PO had to be one creative bugger to get the kit as far as he did. But then he did get rid of it before going anywhere and I got a pretty good idea of why he did now. The wiring..... geesh! I think he used a drill and razor wire to fish the harness through the frame. I couldn't go 2 feet of wire without finding a chewed up or broken wire patched with ScotchLocks with the bare ends hanging out inside the frame. In the end I had to replace the entire trailer harness and considering the mods to the taillight housings he did, I broke down and bought the HF LED kit and installed it. At least the LEO's won't be shaking my tree for a license plate light being out. That sucker lights up with the LED's. But after installing the new harness, shielded with harness wrap, and soldering and shrink wrapping every connection from the 5/4 converter all the way to the tail lights I'm sure it will serve me well for quite a while. Still need to tuck in some rubber grommets where the harness goes through the frame but that's a quick fix. Got the 5/4 wire converter tucked in by the frame under the seat. Piece of cake hooking that up. I hooked the side markers and rear tails to the marker lights on my switch panel. That way I can kick the lights on all the way around without the key in the bike. Had one moment there where I was ready to panic because the four ways weren't working until I remembered I hadn't hooked up the brake light wire yet. Whew! I don't like loose wires on my bike so I added a plug holder on the rear light bar for easy access. Nice clean connection. I got the rubber hose installed on the rear spring bolts. New zerks are in. Coupler has been bent back to the original shape and washers installed. One handed hookup now. Siliconed in the frame plugs, or at least three of them. Missing one so that search is on. Cleaned off the Vaseline that HF uses off the wheel bearings and packed them with High Temp and set the bearings. Got my Nebraska trailer plate mounted. Note the size of that thing. I never noticed the bike plates here before but that sucker is gonna cause some serious drag. Suppose I should mount another plate on the other side so it don't lean. Going to make some mini mudflaps for the trailer tires. Need somewhere to mount some of those lil chrome nekked ladies. Well, looking at that pic maybe I won't need mudflaps with that big ol plate hanging there. My friend (The Piper) that pinstriped my helmet last year stopped by and was eyeballing the trailer. I know what he's thinking......He was grinning. So I miss anything? I'm going to have to go out and drag it around now and check out. Looks like it's gonna rain. Guess I'll find out how water proof it is. Mike
6. My '88 didn't come with the plug in headsets but has the ports. Where can I get the headsets, are they yamaha or can I go aftermarket? Thanks Sean
7. Buddy has a 2006 RSV with a 4 pin wiring harness, He is wanting to pull my Bushtec trailer that has a 6 pin. Does anyone no of a converter or should I just tell him to order the harness from Bushtec? Anyone with a sugguestion? Thanks
8. After reinstalling the forks and top triple tree clamp I can't find the harness end of the ignition plug. It's red and should stand out like Santa Claus at the beach but I've spent over an hour poking around in there and could not find it. Where should I look for the harness end?
9. I have nothing displaying on my cmu. Not even when turning ignition on, when it should go thru each item. It was working a month or two ago, but now nothing. Is there a common power wire for the display? The display lights up with the dash lights, but displays nothing else. While putting the bike back together, I did put a small gauge black ground wire on the positive battery terminal. (lesson learned: put down the tools when talking to your 8 year old daughter) The wire melted down, and i followed it to the main negative cable. It was in a factory crimp with a few other grounds. After that, I have had to run new wires on the taillights and brake lights on the positive side, not the ground. No fuses blew, and i don't see any other fried wires. Maybe some damaged wires that I can't see in the harness some where? Time for a harness? Coincidence? sun spots? UFO's?? :confused24:
10. First time posting. Been lurking a while. I just bought a 99 Venture. The previous owner removed the CB and stereo. The speakers have been changed to Clarion and there are wires run to the right saddlebag for a stereo. I really would like intercom, CB, and FM radio. What are my options? I have a JM 2003 intercom/cb system I bought for a previous bike and didn't use. It has a Harley bracket on it and no headsets. The wiring harness and antenna are there, though. Looking for a reasonably priced solution. Originally thought I could pick up the parts to restore the bike to original condition, but people think they are made of gold.
11. As requested by playboy here are some pictures of the finished set-up. I used the wiring harness the M1A1MECH makes and it made this very easy. I had alot of help from playboy as well with all this he was a great help. The trailer is an AMT (America's Best Trailer) the Excape model the 4' one. I'm using the swivel ball that they sent with the trailer and I used the Hopkins 46225 converter that was recommended by playboy and mounted it under the seat behind the battery. I ran the wiring harness along the frame rail by the rear fender and it seems to be working fine. I may have to check the axles for alignment, hopefully someone can chime in and let me know how to do it. Anywho its a great trailer for the money and I want to say THANKS again for everyones help in making this happen. Now I have to do some riding before the end of June due to a shoulder injury that will keep me off the RSV for 6 months after surgery, by then it will be "Snowing" Big Toms favorite word so my riding season will be cut short this year I think unless they let me put it off longer. My maiden voyage was going for groceries for the "BOSS Lady" and a lot of people were looking at my scoot/trailer combo and I was the boy with the most toys in the sandbox for a few hours. Picture #4 is the swivel ball, #5 is the wire harness.
12. Can anyone tell me if the GEN I (MKI or MKII) use the same electrical conectors and pin out as the GEN II Royal Star Ventures do where the main harness connector to the rear light harness under the seat? I have started making a jumper harness for the GEN II Royal Star Venture and was asked if the harness will fit a GEN I MK II, but I have no clue and do not know any one in the area that has a GEN I of any type that could be used to check it out. Wiring diagram and pin out is attached, photos can be seen in the GEN II classifieds in my ad. Thanks for any info.

Mystery Harness

Well, it's winter around here and I just bought my bike (MK1) so I'm taking it apart, cleaning it, fixing all the broken plastic tabs, replace screws as needed... etc. and, I find this NEW HARNESS under the right hand side fairing box next to the cubby hole, just below the speaker... and I have no idea what it's for. Can anyone tell me what it's for? It is new, never been plugged into anything, has the larger two prong connector, a small two prong, a ground cable and goes to a harness controller and then feeds in behind the headlight and I assume to the battery from there. Check out the pic and let me know what you're thinking... THANKS
14. After joining a few months ago I posted a message about a problem with my 2008 RS CB unit. The problem is when keying the CB unit to talk, in the controller window , it would say CB Error, and the CB unit would not work. The dealer has replaced the CB unit and all related hard parts but the problem still persists. After much discussion with Yamaha Tech they feel the problem is within the main wiring harness that runs from headlight to tail light. Yamaha has auth the replacement of the harness and it has been ordered, but has to come from Japan. Just in case anyone is interested I will post a message after the harness is installed to let everyone know if it fixed the problem.
15. I'm getting ready to add tail, brake, and turn signals to my Voyager kit. I have the lights (6" oval surface mount LED lights from Custom Dynamics...), and I can get a trailer harness and associated stuff locally. What I need to know is were are the connectors for the rear lights (tail, brake, and turn)? I know the rear turn signals have connectors, I saw a set on evil bay.... What I'd like to do is make up some y adapters so I don't have to butcher the stock harness (I'm kinda funny that way.....). Thanks! Y'All ride safe...
16. Actually, the spelling should be ass_me because I can't say anyone else was made an ass of... I bought a little trailer to pull behind my Wing. I thought it would be perfect since the Wing already had an unusual 6 wire weatherproof connector and the trailer was equipped with the same device. I got the bike out and attached the trailer coupler to the hitch ball and was thrilled to see that the trailer tongue was perfectly level. Then I connected the chains and stood back to admire my work. So far, so good. Next, I connected the wire harness and turned the ignition key to on to verify the lights working properly on the trailer. That's when all hell broke loose! As soon as I turned around, I could see dense white smoke billowing out from the under the trunk. I immediately turned the key off and went to assess the damage. When I got to the back of the bike, I could see that the rear lights were still on. HUH? I already turned off the key... I figured (assumed) that somehow the rear lights were getting feedback voltage from the trailer, so I disconnected the wire harness. Nope, still got lights. So, I thought maybe I should start the bike to possibly reset any relays that had gotten stuck. It started right up, but I'm still getting smoke. By now, I'm beginning to panic. After turning the key to off, I quickly yanked the side cover off and pulled the main fuse. But, even that didn't stop the smoke! Now that the battery is exposed, I ran back to the garage for a wrench and disconnected the battery. Finally, the smoking ceases. It seemed like a long time, but this all took place in about 2 or 3 minutes. I opened the trunk but realized that there could be nothing in there causing the problem. I opened the left bag. This is where the previous owner installed 2 additional fuse boxes (for the lighting, audio system, trailer, etc.). I checked everything over and couldn't find any visible indication of extreme heat or any wires hot to the touch. Next step is to remove the rear fender and start following the wire harness. As soon as I got the fender off, I could see the culprit. A trailer wiring harness isolator had been installed. It was now a tortured, twisted mass of plastic, wires, and epoxy. After doing some research online, I could find no 'standard' wiring setup for the harness connector. So, the assumption I made (that made an ass of me) was that they would already be correct. Compounding the issue was that whoever installed the isolator (gotta blame someone!) had put in a 30 amp fuse. The online instructions said 10 amp max. The auxiliary fuse box was wired directly to the battery which is why pulling the main fuse didn't help. The likely culprit for all the mayhem was probably the 6th wire. This is added to a harness where a dome light is being utilized. It is normally wired to be 'hot' when the bike's ignition is in the 'off' position. When I first connected the trailer harness to the bike, it must have fed the dome light voltage back to the output side of the running lights relay in the isolator and then fried it with the contacts closed. I was fortunate that it didn't do any further damage to the bike. The moral of this story? NEVER ASSUME the previous mechanic got it right!
17. I am finishing up the electrical wiring for a trailer. The trailer has independent turn signals and all lights are LEDs. I have read many of the threads about hooking up to the bike's electrical and notice almost all talk about tapping into the wiring under the seat. I have an 08 RSV and my question is: has anyone tapped into the harness behind the licence plate? I was going to make 2 into 1 water proof bullet connector adapters so not to have to splice into wires for the bike's female trailer plug. (running, brake, 2 turn signals, then a ground) and if anyone has Pros or Cons as to why one hook up is better or worse / under the seat vs behind the licence plate, it will help me decide. (i wired my gold wing up to the harness behind the rear tail light cluster and never had any issues) Thanks, Shamue
18. Decided it was time to make it so we could charge cell phones in the trunk. Starting thinking of the best way to make that work and came across this. http://goo.gl/McHpJ seemed like the perfect arrangement and cheap so if I broke one it wasn't the end of the world. cut the entire swivel plug off of it and ran a harness back into the trunk. Ran it right off the battery with a fuse and relay switching it on and off with the bike. A little velcro to hold it in place and we are golden!
19. Lucas Replacement Wiring Harness Smoke Kit http://www3.telus.net/bc_triumph_registry/smoke.htm Enjoy, Scooter Bob
20. Will be putting it together this weekend. I've read of the trials and tribulations some have had with them, so I'll be paying close attention during assembly. I'd like to add the Wally World (about $35.00) led trailer taillights. I'll also be adding a 5 wire in to 4 wire harness. question is how will the bike's turn signal function react to these additions? Time permitting, before Kreg's MD I may add these running lights. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LED-Red-boat-motorcycle-truck-trailer-RV-light-99HBR-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem53e659df3aQQitemZ360346935098QQptZOtherQ5fVehicleQ5fParts
21. While attepmting to remove the headlight bulb tonight, the socket (where the bulb plugs into the wireing) broke. I am guessing this socket, fixture, plug, or whatchamacallit, is part of the wiring harness. Is there anything a person could use to replace this? Other than a new harness? I think that I will get this fixed and then hire someone to do things for me. Fix one thing and another breaks.:confused24: Might give up completely, go into debt, and buy a Can-Am Spder. At least then it would be warranty work. Thanks, Dave
22. Is the Stebel horn bracket and wiring harness still available for purchase somewhere on the site, I can't seem to find them in the classified section. Thank you..
23. After all this time I'm finally getting around to reassembling the '84 starting with the wiring harness. Work is painfully slow seeing as I'm cleaning every connector and installing dielectric grease on every pin. I'm also adding bling to the harness even though it won't really show. Here's as far as I got tonight. I'll update every day or so that I work on it...
24. I like many have fallen victom to the economy today with great saddness i watched my 2007 venture get loaded up on a truck and taken away. with a new baby on the way i couldnt afford to keep making the payments so i had to make the choise baby or bike... it didnt take long to decide on the baby so off she went. on another note i did get the opertunity to take off most of the extra's i put on like the hitch and wireing harness most of the chrome so i will be posting it in the for sale section soon as i get pics and clean it up. i hope that we all will remain friends and i hope i will still be welcome here as you all have become a part of an exstended family who have helped me through some hard times as well as the good times . thanks for your ear.. Ron aka "grasshopper"
25. Back in July I bought a chrome Stebel air horn from Hornblasters.com. I also bought the Carbon One wiring harness and mounting bracket. Last weekend I finally got around to install the horn but the horn I received was the Nova Chrome version. This horn has a chromed plastic cover that looks great but because of the cover it's a little larger. Needless to say it doesn't fit in the space where the factory horn goes without some modification. The first thing I had to do was add a spacer (1/4") between the mount on the back of the horn and the Carbon One mounting bracket. Then I had to trim some of the plastic cover from the upper right side of the compressor so the horn wouldn't touch the engine. I used a dremel tool . Lastly I had to change the clips on the wiring harness that go the the horn. This horn has the electrical connections coming out of the bottom of the compressor. I changed the wiring harness connectors from straight to 90 degree other wise the wires would have touched the pipes. Moral to the story, when you by parts online make sure you get what you thought you ordered. Also, if you are going to add a Stebel horn make sure you don't get the Nova version.
