  1. Many of us have no choice but to travel the Highways and when you encounter such a delay in traffic patterns on highways such a road construction or accidents, getting trapped, then engine/clutch getting extremely hot, personal heat fatigue , etc........."Do you ride the shoulder ?". Please , I'm asking your opinion to a direct question, NOT "I only ride the back roads ,blah , blah , blah..............! ". Coming back from vacation, Becky and I encountered numerous highway congestion due to traffic accidents to road constructions. Yes we took mainly back roads for scenery and piece of mind. One instance back on the Highway, It was HOT ! Suddenly traffic backed up for over 10 miles, all traffic converted to one lane near end. No explanation was given over the CB from oncoming CBer's from the opposite direction. I was contemplating driving the shoulder of the road to get the wind in our face and cool the scoot. Scoot was getting hot as we were , if not hotter. I hesitated pulling into the shoulder due to maybe some cager might get mad and either swerve into us or open their passenger car door on us. While thinking about it , 4 MC (I think the were 1%'rs) came riding by in the shoulder. So I followed on in line, lagging back about 50 yards or so. Shoulder was clean with a few baby gators and a few beer cans. They weren't mine either.................... 5 miles from where we were , we hit an exit and took the back roads till we got home. I know myself if I were in my cage sitting in line for my turn and another cage came by in the shoulder (other than an emergency vehicle) , I would be pi$$ed. But a MC, I would be more forgiving knowing the extra stress we encounter. So again I ask , "Would you drive the shoulder?" BEER30
  2. 2000 RSV - The guy I bought the bike from this past winter just stopped by work and dropped off the factory pipes. Said he was cleaning out the shop over the weekend and figured I might want them. Question: the pipes on there now sound OK although get a bit loud on the highway and need to crank up radio. Also cackles and pops when slowing from high speeds. Are oems quiet like a Goldwing or?
  3. I have an 83. Typically runs pretty good but having some issues. 1) Have to use choke to start it now. Didn't used to need to. 2) Smokes quite a bit when starting. Not impacting oil. 3) Slow off the start. 4) Having a hard time keeping it going. Idle doesn't seem to be enough. Dies at stop. 5) Notice on the highway that every 10 seconds or so the RPMs will drop from 3500 to 3300 for a split second. Would appreciate any insight you might have. Thanks Bob
  4. Well, I did it. I traded my Venture. I never toured, so it was just too big and heavy for jumping on and cruising. What did I replace it with? A 2010 Honda 1300 Custom Interstate... http://i43.tinypic.com/2eeaa1c.jpg It's a lot lower, lighter and easier to handle. I coudn't give up the shield, floorboards and bags and I have an engine guard on order to take the Kuryakyn highway pegs. I'm also ordering a sound system, so I won't miss too many of the extras the Venture offered (never used the CB or cruise anyway).
  5. I purchased an 09 Venture new last April and have a little over 9000 miles on it now. I was in a long sweeper at highway speed and took my left hand off to set the cruise and a wobble started to come in as soon as I removed my hand. I checked the front and rear suspension, pressures and alignment and everything seemed fine. Took it out and tried it again and it did the same thing again. Have since noticed that it occurs at a lower highway speed when I am riding double. I was wondering if the scoops in the fairing could be causing this at speed when turning and also if the leveling links might help out. It stops as soon as both hands are on the bars and there aren't any impulses felt in the bars when riding under any conditions. Wondering if it is just a quirk of the bike at speed.
  6. I was watching the listing on eBay on the Markland highway floor boards up to the end. Alas.....the other guys threw money faster and farther than I did. So I'm still looking. The question is what opitions are there for a similar type of highway floor board? I have had pegs on the bars and didn't care for them. These looked like they would sit out pretty well and not interfer with the lower Baker wind wings I run. Any suggestions for a fit on my '84? Mike
  7. I installed Amber Passing / Highway lamps on my Midnight, info on the box to show you what to order if you're also so interested in doing the same.. Lights were available at local NAPA dealer, you can see the part number on the box. I have a super bright headlight installed which is brighter than the highway lights, so I added the Amber lights to be more noticeable on the highway.. Some were asking about them, you can see it on my bike and decide if it's decent looking or 'uhgly' lol http://www.eastcoastphotos.com/venture/amberlights01.jpg http://www.eastcoastphotos.com/venture/amberlights02.jpg
  8. what size is the crash bar and what size highway pegs will fit it.
  9. I've posted my '98 Shadow and some highway boards in the classified if you're interested:sun:
  10. I seen some pics on this site with bikes that had "what looked to be" highway pegs mounted on the floor boards. I would like to get some highway pegs for mine but I'm verticle challanges with a 30" inseam. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks Mark
  11. As tomorrow is Nov 11, Canada's Remembrance Day I would like to remind everyone to please take 2 minutes for a moment of silence when it turns 11am in your area to remember all that have given their lives to make our lives and country so wonderful. Here is a video about Canada's Highway of Heroes. It really is a heart string tugger when you see everyone that turns out to honour Canada's fallen soldiers. 14. I decided to mount highway pegs on my floor boards in stead of the crash bars. This is what I ended up with. They are made for a Road Star. They are drill to mount. I love them. They get my feet away from the motor heat during the hot summer months. http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0295.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0296.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0297.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0298.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0299.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0300.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0301.jpg http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w337/Owen064/IMG_0303.jpg
  15. While out for a ride yesterday, I thought I heard a rhythmic squeak at low speed once in a while. I was 50 miles from home so I decided to run it home. Everything seemed fine at highway speeds, so I wasn't overly concerned. I thought it was the splines in the drive hub dry so I ran it in the shop to grease it. As I was removing the wheel I found it strange that the castle nut on the axle was barely finger tight. When I pulled the axle out I was very surprised as it was only 7 inches long with a nicely rounded end. The other end was still sticking out of the hub! I had to remove the final drive from the swing arm to get the wheel off the bike. Apparently the bearing was jamming at times and started rotating the end of the axle shaft. When I drove the axle out the inner race is still stuck on the shaft. Darn good thing the pinch bolt on the right side was tight so that end of the axle could not fall out. I don't even want to think of the concequences of something like that happening at highway speed. Now it looks like I'm going to have a fun time getting the outer race removed from the wheel. The right hand bearing came out reasonably easy. I just bought an axle from Pinwall Cycle and will have to order the bearings and seals from Yamaha Monday. By the way the splines have plenty of grease on them.
  16. I was heading back to Salt Lake City from a four day trip through Colorado and the bike shutdown. I was heading north on I-15, our major north/south route, with afternoon rush hour traffick. In the fastlane at about 80-85 and the bike stopped responding to throttle. Had to stop on the left side of this four laner with not much room to do even that. Cars whipping by merely inches away. I now have a new found respect for our Highway Patrol. One car did a slow down manuver to four lanes so I could push my bike to the right side. Our Highway Incident Command wanted my bike off the highway so I pushed that sucker 3/4 of a mile to the next ramp. Have I mentioned the muscle pump I got from that. Long story short.....friends called.....bike trailered.....all because of a clogged fuel filter. This filter had less than a year on it and only 7,000 miles. How long should they last? Our local yamaha guy told me to pay better attention to buying good quality gas. My neck of the woods that would be Chevron. Priciest too...go figure. Anyway.....it put me in a dangerous situation with some huffing and puffing to boot.....lesson learned on doing a complete check of the bike before a long trip out of town.

    Montreal

Arrived home last Thursday evening from the international city manager conference in Montreal, Quebec, traveling from Coldwater, Michigan, via Port Huron through Ontario returning through northern New York (reminds me of Michigan's UP) and highway 6 across PA through Cleveland (during rush hour) arriving home at 8:45 pm. I sure wish the bike had better lighting. Deer are random creatures especially at this time of year when the rut is about to begin. Everytime I think about a different ride, the Venture reminds me of why it has been in production for a dozen years essentially unchanged. What other bike would it be? The Wing has great lights I am told and the new Ultra Limited with heated grips is an attractive ride at an unreasonable price and all that Harley hoopla attached to it. I just like to ride lots and lots of miles. Saw some beautiful scenery and only one idiot driver in New York state out in the middle of nowhere. Go figure. This guy is driving an old Camaro on a straight stretch of road with me behind him and three vehicles behind me. He whips off the shoulder and back onto the highway in the beginning of a 180 degree turn. I hit both brakes stopping short of a vehicle that now crosses the lane in front of me. He sheepishly waves (driving gloves, no less) for me and the cars to move around him in the opposing traffic lane. It's hard to understand the mind set of this kind of driver. A real menace. All in all a fun 1,900 mile trip. Bill
  18. I was riding home today and I rode for a few miles with a 1st Gen in Barrington Illinois on Highway 59. Is this a member of our forum?
  19. Ok, just exactly HOW do you adjust these passing lamps for the UP and DOWN?? I can't see it.. Anyone able to shed some light on this.. ? Thanks in advance.
  20. Went on a ride today. Hoped to get in maybe 400 miles. After about 100 miles I started to get a backfile at idle when I would slow down into small towns, then it got progressively worse.. Zero power at idle, in order to take off from a stop you have to rev it to 2000 rpm. turned around to head home. It has power and feels right at highway speeds, by the time I got home, it was kicking in and out at highway speed and I'm getting surging as if a cyl is working, not working, working, not working.... At idle, it's popping like crazy and idling very poorly. Am I losing a coil? or is it the Ignition computer that needs some TLC? 83 std, well maintained, I do not have any ground wire upgrades. It does start a bit hard when hot.
  21. Man, I have so many things to do be4 I'm off to Cody. Seems like every time I scratch one item off the list, two more take it's place. I'm leaving early in the AM on the 10th, and it looks like I'll be bringing the '83. There's just too many issues to deal with on the '91 to get it 'trust' worthy. I'll be trailering part of the way...or maybe even all the way?? Depends on how I feel when I get to my daughters in Idaho on Friday night. At this time I'm not even sure if I'll be bedding down at the 6 in Twin Falls, or borrowing a couch a bit farther north at the ranch. One thing I do know is I've been wanting to ride the Yellowstone, Chief Joseph, Bear's Tooth for a long time and this will probably be my last chance. The wheels on the Ventures will be gobbling up highway for a long time to come, but mine have started to get a little gimpy over the last couple of years. The walking stick and Motrin are my friends... It's not all doom and gloom though. I'm getting excited and amd looking forward to spending some time in a great riding area with some awesome friends. BRING IT!!!!!!
  22. Hey guys, I need to get my clutch redone, sorted out as it's slipping at highway speeds.. not so bad when taking off from a stop but up on the highway, dropping the hammer really screams up the revs and eventually I'll feel some accelleration. Folks have been leading on to the PCW Racing clutch kit, which is not as expensive as thd Barnett clutch kit. Comparing apples to oranges, is one better than the other or are we looking as one being as good as the other, only price being the difference? I couldn't reach the PCW people today.. ergh
  23. For people that didn't make it to the Hub but would like to see what the roads were like here is some video. The riding doesn't start until about a minute in. I forgot to mount the camera ahead of time. The camera was mounted to my left side highway peg so it looks like I'm over the yellow line when I wasn't. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZV64-QvJRc]YouTube - Ar1[/ame] Hope this works, I've never posted a video before.
  24. Okay I searched the forum and found some good info, however I guess my question is a little different. I am 5'8'' and would llike to be able to extend my legs out from the floorboards when on the highway. As we all know the summer and highway heat can at times add to the heat off the engine. I really don't care to have the lower air deflectors added. Could anyone with some insight on this subject please comment. We have a 5 day trip to the Texas hill country scheduled at the end of September and really like to have some pegs in place by then. Thanks
  25. Cindi and I got back from Gatlinburg a couple of hours ago. It was a blast! Rode the Dragon (at a fairly slow speed and STILL managed to scrape a peg!). We were supposed to stay another day, but since Leadwolf and Tinkerbell left early we were just sitting around moping and said @$^# it and left for home. Caught a pretty heavy rain storm just after hitting the highway and had to sit under a viaduct for a bit, but it eased up and we booked out. Spent the night in Lexington then home this morning. Not gonna be able to make the rally (again!), but hope to see a few of y'all at a meet and eat before the snows come again.
