  1. I've done parts of this route on separate rides before, but when you string them together, it is an awesome day of riding, especially with the clear, cooler weather we have now. Left just north of Atlanta at 0700 yesterday heading north up 575/515 to Blue Ridge, then up Rt. 5 to McCaysville into TN, then up Rt. 68 to Tellico Plains where we picked up the western point of the Cherohala Skyway and took it all the way to Robbinsville NC. If you have not ridden this before, put it on your bucket list - - it's one of the best 60+ mile stretches of road you'll ever ride. Then up US129 to the Dragon, which I have to say was way too crowded to really enjoy yesterday, but it's still a fun, twistie ride. At the top of the Dragon, we took the Parkway on a long, lazy ride to US321 south, stopping at a few scenic overlook areas to just take in the amazing views and do some bald eagle watching. We jumped off 321 onto SR337, aka Lamar Alexander Parkway, for a great ride along the Little River all the way to just south of Gatlinburg. On the bummer side, we came upon an accident scene where a biker ran off the road heading in the opposite direction. Don't know their fate, but the bike (looked like a Road King) was clear down the embankment and in the water. Hope they were OK. From Gatlinburg, we headed south on US441 through the Great Smokey Mountain National Forest to Cherokee NC, then back southwest on US74 to Andrews, Murphy, then SR60 to Blue Ridge GA, then back home down I-575. 14 hours, 475 miles, multiple stops for food and sightseeing, and capped off with a hot toddy and some much needed Advil! If you are looking for the ultimate Fall leaf peeping ride down this way, this one would be hard to beat. The colors aren't fully in yet, but the next 30 days or so will be spectacular, and the long range weather forecast at least for the next few weeks is supposed to be very cooperative - - 70's during the day and chilly but not cold at night. We plan to hit all or parts of this route again before the end of October if the kids and grandkids will let us get away, along with side trips already planned for Savannah later this week and Thunder Beach (Panama City Beach) in 3 weeks. Time to stock up on more Advil!
  2. Will be heading up to Gatlinburg from Biloxi to attend the South East Shriner Assoc. convention on 10 May with an overniter along the way. Will be departing there on Sunday 13 May to return to Biloxi. Four couples going. a GW CSCtrike, an HD Ultra Classic, a GW, and My 08RSV Hannigan. All pulling trailers. If U C us rolling along, give us a shout on CB 10. Hoping for great weather and a beautiful uneventful ride, even though there is an HD in the pack. lol.
  3. Heading out to Gatlinburg on the bike a little later today for our fall motorcycle trip. We have 4 couples that make this trip every spring and fall to ride the Dragon and blow off a little steam. If you're in the area and see a blue flame Venture, be sure to say howdy. You all have a great weekend.
  4. I think my wife and I are going to take off for Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge Friday and ride around the area on Saturday. Of course her idea of riding around the area means to the nearest outlet mall. But I'm sure we'll make the trip over the mountain. If anyone is going to be in the area and wants to get together send me a message. Dennis
  5. Pat and I are going to Gatlinburg this Friday and staying til Sunday morning. Wondering if anyone is going to be nearby and would like to meet up for the day? Let us know. Then we are leaving sunday morning (Aug 22) for Myrtle Beach for a couple nights. Anyone there? Then we are going to Gordonsville, VA Wed (aug 25)...???? Then back to Pigeon Forge, TN on Friday (Aug 27)...then it's home. Maybe we will get to meet some of you out there. It's going to be an awesome ride. Hope we can hold up! LOL Let us know.. Don
  6. Gonna be in Gatlinburg this weekend, anyone else going?
  7. I woke up this morning to sunshine just coming up, but within an hour it was gray and gloomy again. I ended up taking a morning nap and again the sun popped out, so I took a ride. I took off toward Knoxville, which is about 100 miles away, on old Highway 11. This is kind of like Route 66 in this is the road you would have traveled if you were going from New York to Birmingham and beyond. It parallels several diferent interstates. Some of it has been moved and four laned, but there are still stretches of two lanes with old stores and motels along the way. After going thru Knoxville, I looped into Townsend and then to Gatlinburg on the narrow two lane thru the mountains. With the rain we have had lately, there was a lot of whitewater flowing. I went thru Gatlinburg and then hit the Foothills Parkway near Cosby over to I-40 and then home. It was a beautiful 260 mile ride and definately lifted my spirits. My 1st fillup at @$2.16 at a Shell station was almost 47 mpg. Here are a few pictures to show what a beautiful day it was. The third picture of the house is zoomed in and the forth picture is the same shot not zoomed. That is what call being off the beaten path. RandyA
  8. Kevin (Leadwolf56) just called me from Gatlinburg and he has a broken windshield on his 2nd gen. Do we have any members in the area that may be able to help him out? Anyone in the area have a spare windshield or know of a dealer in the area that may have one? He doesn't have internet access while there. I have his phone number is 574-612-3837. Dennis
  9. Here's a few pics of our trip to Gatlinburg TN. Most of them are of the cabin we shared with Chuck and Cindi (Moose).
  10. Cindi and I got back from Gatlinburg a couple of hours ago. It was a blast! Rode the Dragon (at a fairly slow speed and STILL managed to scrape a peg!). We were supposed to stay another day, but since Leadwolf and Tinkerbell left early we were just sitting around moping and said @$^# it and left for home. Caught a pretty heavy rain storm just after hitting the highway and had to sit under a viaduct for a bit, but it eased up and we booked out. Spent the night in Lexington then home this morning. Not gonna be able to make the rally (again!), but hope to see a few of y'all at a meet and eat before the snows come again.
  11. Leaving for Indy in a little bit to meet Moose. We'll head to Gatlinburg TN for the weekend. Got a "cabin" in the mountains. Should be a good time. If it works out we'll ride the Dragon while we're there. I'll post pics after we get back.
  12. :bawling:During a heartwrenching and suspenseful ceremony conducted in the tranquil setting at the KOA campground Saturday morning, Sledgehammer officially became crowned "Bad Biker Dude" by Riderduke with a Hot Red Pepper Doo Rag!!! Sledgehammer was speechless throughout the entire ceremony attended by the Venture Rally Family. After the ceremony, a tribute ride was led by Sleeperhawk followed by several members of the Venture Rider Family to Cherokee, North Carolina. (That's Tim up front - everyone else is going the wrong way!) The group had to indoctrinate Sledeghammer with the meaning of the Blueridge Parkway Sign by means of riding through heavy slow tourist traffic on the Parkway. The ride was highlighted with a downtown parade through Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The group was to pull over according to the City of Gatlinburg Police Department due to the overwhelming response to the parade of the Venture bikers downtown. Sledgehammer was overcome with emotion and had to be consoled. But as you can see by the final picture, Sledgehammer has emerged into his new role effortlessly! Congratulations, Sledgehammer! Your loving family friends!
  13. got back yesterday afternoon, wifes first trip on a bike and had a great time! Went up to Ashville to see the biltmore estate and did about 900 miles total. Pulled my new piggybacker trailor and it worked out great. Also the new riser extensions on the handlebars worked great, they totally eliminated the burning between the shoulderblades and helped with overall comfort. If anyone else gets a chance to go to Gatlinburg make sure to go to the Alamo steakhouse, that is without a doubt the best steak I have ever had!!
  14. Laura and I took a ride to Gatlinburg today and it was a beautiful ride. It got up to about 80 degrees as we got there. We came in thru the east end that comes from I40. We had a good meal at Legend's and walked around and did a little shoping. The sidewalks were about full of people. As we were leaving. I moved over into the right lane that goes up the hill as you are leaving the main drag. I was getting a bit irritated because I had a large Chevy pickup or SUV following me real close. Just about the time I got to where the big parking garage was on my right, a car in the left lane going the same direction as me allowed another big SUV to turn left in front of him, right into my path. We were in just a few feet from each other when I saw her and she saw me. When she got stopped, she was over halfway into my lane. Fortunately, with the traffic, I was not moving fast, but if I had hit her, we would have gone down. I was able to brake hard and move to my right. I don't know how the truck behind did not run into me unless with him being higher up, he was able to see what was going on before I did. Anyway, it was real close and it sure made me think about some of the crashes we have had with this group this year. It can happen real quick. RandyA That should have been "Close call in Gatlinburg today"
