  1. What is the issue with I believe the Ventures second gear prior to '87 or so? SS
  2. Don't know how many are into 511 gear. But here is a link to some good prices. http://www.lapolicegear.com/unarja.html
  3. Let me begin by saying that, like most men, I visit the doctor as seldom as possible. That being said, one beautiful day last July, while riding the 07 RSV that I have grown to love, I was within my fence leading to my house. Our land is southwest of San Antonio and anyone familiar with the area knows that the one thing in abundance is SAND. Because I was waiting for the gate to close to ensure the dogs did not go out, I was stopped. I was in very soft sand…and…a very stupid negligence on my behalf; I did not ensure I was in first gear. As I revved up the engine and released the clutch, the front wheel, in the soft sand, turned. Being in the incorrect gear I did not have the power to get moving forward and the bike started falling. My reaction was, of course, to attempt to hold it up. I am 5’ 7” and weight 175 lbs…so you know the outcome. While attempting to right the bike as it was going down, I hurt my right wrist. After trying to cope with the injury, I finally gave up and made the doctor’s appointment. While visiting the doc, he noticed it had been a while since I had been in to see him…therefore, he asked me to get the usual tests done that should be accomplished every year…especially for a 60+ yr old man. Well, the tests revealed a problem with the ole PSA, which most men know is a possible indication of prostate problems. After two biopsies revealing “atypical cells” the third one confirmed prostate cancer. I am scheduled for surgery on the 16th of January to remove the prostate. Although I am nervous about the whole thing, I am very happy to have this situation found early enough to be alleviated…thus avoiding any further, more significant, conditions. Guys, don’t be foolish like I had been and avoid the doctor…had this not been caught (had I not had the bike incident)…the condition would have continued to worsen and, well, who knows what may have been in my future…assuming I would have had one. If my posting helps but one of you to have the same good fortune as I have experienced, it will be worthwhile. Knowing that my health is in good hands will enable me to have a great Christmas…I wish you all the same.
  4. OK, so the bike is cleaned up, and the battery is charging courtesy of a friend down the road. Now, I just have to find my riding gear! Man, I haven't been out here for a LONG time! How is everyone?

    Heated Gear And Day Ride

Well, I finally got all my heated gear on yesterday and took the bike out for a day ride. It sucks here in the north west due to one day of riding weather and 6 days of lousy weather; oh well, better than not riding at all. Any way with the new upgraded stator and vmax rear end gears, it was an awesome ride. I can't say enough about the new gears. The power to weight performance is such a vast improvement. So as far as riding gear I have: WarmGear jacket liner, WarmGear pants liner, WarmGear gloves and Gerbing heated insoles, along with the WarmGear heat troller. Btw, I think that WarmGear and FirstGear is made by the same company, doing a side by side comparison they look exactly the same other than the logos. With the new stator I did not have any problem losing voltage or draining the battery.
  6. just kicking the idea around for wet weather gear and was looking for opinions. I know how varied the opinions on this site are, but still willing to risk it. AS I dont have any gear with body armor yet I am thinking of getting a 3 season jacket and pants set with body armor. Either that or use Frogg toggs over my leather gear that I presently own. Chaps and jacket no armor. All opinions are welcome as my mind isn't made up yet. Thanks for any input in advance. David

    VMAX rear end

Well I got my new Vmax rear end this last weekend, and installed it as well as a new clutch. What a difference the new rear gears make. I need to adjust the speed O healer, which I will do this next weekend, but WOW, I really like the mid range power difference from the old rear end gears. While I had the tire off, I went ahead and lubed up the hub according to the write up on the tech link. I don't know if the new rear gears or the lube made the difference but I don't have the awful wine any more. I have the more powerful stator comming this next week, and I will install it later this month. I talked to the guys at Blue Ridge sport max and they really seem to be some very nice folks. I paid the whole $600.00 for the new gears and sent them back my old rear end. The day he got my old rear gears he refunded me my $300.00 core charge. With the new stator I am planning on getting the full ensamble from warm gear. I already have the gloves, I just need the rest of the gear.
  8. Alright I'll admit it, I have been one of the members "lurking" and have not posted yet. I seem to visit the site several times a day, especially this time of year (Minnesota). I have owned my Venture for about a year and a half and will admit I am somewhat "on the fence" about it. The weight does not bother me, after the I-basket the whine is much much better, the ride is smooth and it handles OK for what it is. Maybe its just me (or what I'm comparing it to - previous bike GL1800) but to me it needs more power. I know about using the RPM of the V-4 and keeping it in that range. but I'd rather not have to be in 4th gear, 2 up on the highway to maintain 75 mph with a headwind of 15 to 20 mph. 5th gear would loose speed or be wide open to maintain speed. (2 up our combined weight 320 lbs). I have read about the rear gear swap and was hoping to hear from some of you that have done it, what your opinions are after having it for awhile. (performance, fuel economy, e.t.c) I think I read that its a 10% (roughly) difference in gearing... does that mean 17% speedo error? On a related note, could a resistor be used instead of a speedo-healed to correct the difference? Just Curious...? Sorry to make up for all this time lurking in one post!
  9. I was just going through the maint. section and reading all the good info there. Your article on clutch slip was really good but you metioned how it was strange that the the clutch would slip in high gear and not in low gear. This is actually is not strange at all as the higher you go up the gear pattern the more load there is placed on the clutch. In transport trucks drivers will often complain that there clutch is slipping on hill climbs we verify this in the shop by placing the transmission in its highest gear then gently let the clutch out. This will either cause the clutch to slip or stall the engine. If we did this in low gear even a clutch that is starting to slip would tear out the driveline unless it was slipping really bad. One thing we really have to watch is as the engines come with higher horse power the force on the driveline increases. wouldn't want to explain that one to a customer. hope you dont tak take this the wrong way and as always keep up the great work.
  10. I have noticed in the last week that my low oil pressure warning light is coming on from time to time. So far it only comes on when I approach the rev limiter in 2nd gear, it doesn't come on at high RPM's in 1st or 3rd gear. I have checked the oil and it was just below 1/2 in the sight glass, so I added enough oil to bring it to exactly 1/2. I went for a ride and it is still coming on at high RPM's in 2nd gear. Any ideas on why the light is coming on or if I should be worried by this?
  11. I read that the earlier ones had basically both 4th and 5th as overdrive and the newer RSV changed the gearing to a more conventional 4th gear. What year did they do that?
  12. I bought a 83 Venture this fall with just a tick over 20,000 miles on it. The bike is super clean and a guy can tell it been well taken care of it's whole life. Before I bought the bike I made sure second gear was working ok, and so far it still is, but it was the time of year where I got it home and it turned cold so very few miles have been added. I said all that to ask this, has anyone found anything that prolongs what seems to be the inevitable, losing second gear? What kind of mileage can I plan on before a problem might arise? Before I take the bike out in the spring, I will change the oil to a sythetic brand, thinking that might help with the longevity, I will also take care not to ream the bike in the lower gears as I know this puts a strain on the transmission. I won't be pulling a trailer, not that it would hurt anything if loaded correctly and things done proper. Has anyone known of any 83's with high mileage that haven't had problems in this area? Just wondering about these things, any info will be appreciated.
  13. In the not too distant past, someone posted that having the rear end gears re-setup when using a Ford 7.5" rear end in a Yamaha VR or equivalent trike project was mandatory. Upon whoever it was freaking me out, I stopped working on the trike until I could get a chance to pull the rear end (mine is an independent rear end) Anyway...upon removing it, pulling the inspection cover, and using Prussian blue on the gear set and rotating them in the proper direction, I found out I had freaked out over nothing. The proper imprint pattern was better turning them this direction than it had been when they were in the Cougar I took them out of. My point is, don't freak out over this same situation until you've had the gear set checked for proper imprint. You may not have to spend anything except a gasket and some lube. Now I can continue with my project feeling much more comfortable. I'm not saying the person's post was bad--and I appreciate the post because it made me stop and think about something I hadn't considered--but it isn't necessarily something to freak out about. Just have it checked, you may be okay like I am.
  14. Has anyone come up with a reverse gear yet for the RSV? I have see one that was made for HD. It looks like just an extra gear that runs the tranny backwards. http://www.dauntlessmotors.com/Mountinghardware/reverse.htm
  15. If anyone is interested I just placed a like new Men's First Gear Kilimanjaro jacket on EBAY. Size 3XL. It is a great jacket and has been used very little. It no longer fits. The item number is: 120336436767 Thanks, Dennis
  16. Hi everyone! I'm fixing up an 05' tour deluxe I just bought but it has some serious issues that I could use some advice on. #1 As you can see from the pic it has been laid down pretty bad and the right side has sustained a lot of damage. I have both cowlings on order and the vacuum pump was smashed so its comming also. I took off both saddle bags because the right one is so bad it can't be fixed. I don't have the $$$$ bling to buy a new one this year so I am trying to decide if i should go with some leather bags for now or just leave them off altogether for a while. (I think it needs something) Do you guys have a line on any used stock bags? My nephew works at a dealership a few hours away so I get screaming good deals on OEM stuff if I order through him but they evidently don't sell just the tub. (they sell every other part separately of course) #2 As mentioned above the vacuum pump is on order and I have been tooling around town without it but the bike runs like crap above 3rd gear. Does the pump missing have any connection to pour performance (I assumed it is just for the cruise control)? Symptoms are: 1st and 2nd seem fine but start getting a little blubbery in 3rd but when you get into 4th gear and 5th it won't accelerate well and sounds like it is missing or completely bogging out. I pulled the carbs and went through each bowl trying to make sure there wasn' a bunch of crapolla in there but they weren't that bad. Still runs bad. I should have the vacuum pump next week and I figure if it is still crapping out after I get it back together then it will have to make a trip to the dealer. Any help on either question would be appreciated.
  17. Hi, I recently moved to sunny Arizona, and wonder if anyone who is hot weather savvy can make some recommendations as far as helmets, jacket, boots that work best in this heat. I haven't biked in years, but expect to have a Gen 1 Venture Royale very soon, and have no gear as of yet. I'm especially concerned about helmets that won't toast the old noggin. I'm hoping to find something that protects well, but allows some cool air to pass through. I'd also like to wire the helmets to work off the intercom/radio system. Although leather looks great, not sure if it is the best answer for warm weather. Experienced comments would be helpful. Lastly, does anyone know where to find reasonably priced riding gear in the Phoenix area? Thanks in advance for all your help! Joe in Chandler
  18. My 83 venture seems to have the famed slipping in 2nd gear. I knew this when I bought it, but it was a great price and worth the aggrivation for getting it for very little cash. I heard that when the 2nd gear was fixed the dealers made a mark on the case near the VIn number. When I had the bike apart yesterday to sync the carbs I decided to clean up the engine and tranny case and noticed what looks like someoen took a punch and make a large DOT right next to the Vin number on the textured part that holds the number. Is it possible the bike had the fix done? I am getting slipping if I accelerate hard in 2nd. but I can accelerate like a madman in 1st and 3rd and not feel any slipping. Reason I ask, I was reading the threads about the clutch and how the springs or 20 year old discs can cause slipping, and that the bike will slip in 2nd.
  19. have 2 problems with a 89 venture royale first, when bike is cold everything works great, after about 15 minutes the bike starts to miss,if i take bike off the sidestand then it runs fine, seems okay if im driving also the gear indicators only work in 3rd gear after bike runs about 15 minutes just wondering if it could be a sidestand problem, neutral switch or both
  20. Question to the experts. Is it possible, from lack of grease, for the Coupling Gear to wear enough to allow wobble of the drive shaft? This is not on my RSV but rather on my VStar 650. They are very similar in design. I have been having problems with a noise in the final drive. I disassembled everything (or so I thouhgt) and greased it. Turns out only half of the coulping gear got grease. Upon FULLY disassembling the unit, I grease the end of the drive shaft and the end of the pinion shaft. Upon doing so, the grease truned a nice rust color. After putting everything back together and the wheel on the bike, the "clicking" noise had subsided greatly. I ask about the wobble because there is a small but noticable groove half way round the drive shaft right about where the shaft goes through the housing. I am hoping that the engineers designed all this so that coupling gear ($18 part) would wear out first/fastest so to save the drive shaft ($125) from damage. Do I dare just replace the coupling gear and see if all "clicking" noise goes away? Sort of a one-piece-at-a-time approach?
  21. I replaced the factory installed BrickStone tires at 6,500 miles as the rear was getting worn out. So, while I had the rear tire off, I decided to pull the drive-shaft and grease the splines with Honda Moly 60 grease. I also greased the splines and the fingers that are on what the service manual calls the "Clutch hub." (Item 7 on page 7-13 of the service manual) Of course I cleaned off the factory installed grease before applying the Moly 60. I have seen Scheaffer gear oil #209 and 209A have Moly in them, but I cant find any locally so I also changed the rear end gear lube with some Amsoil Synthetic gear oil I had. I put some Moly 60 in the rear end. About 1/4 teaspoon full to add some Molybdenum Disulphide to the rear-end as those gears take quite a bit of shock load when shifting gears. I did NOT change the engine/clutch/transmission oil, so I don't think the noise reduction came from that area. Too bad the engine and transmission share oil with the clutch..... I would like to put Molybdenum Disulphide in them too but it would probably ruin the clutch................... OH I used an Acid Brush from the plumbing department of the hardware store to apply the grease. I cut the brissles off to only about 3/8" long so they would be stiff. I applied the grease in a light coat. I wish I could easly get at the universal joint at the front end of the drive shaft, so I could use the Moly 60 on it. It looks lite the middle gear is lubricated by the engine/clutch/transmission oil, so I cant apply Moly 60 to it

    Tranny probs

Ok who can help me out there. I have a 83 1200 and 2nd gear slips. All others work just fine. Could it just be a simple adjustment?
  23. Even with my 40+ years experience working on bikes and cars, I still occasionally need help with the idiosyncrasies of an individual vehicle. Take for example I searched for "wander" and found the fix almost immediately. How to check the "Boost Sensor". And many other repairs. I will have to remove the engine to fix 2nd gear and the entire procedure is right here. Thank You All. I had a BMW K1200LT. Their website is formated much like this one but Yamahas are so much more reliable and easy to work on, I see almost no negativity here. Thank you all for your help.
  24. I had a scraping noise on my '84 Venture earlier this sping. It was suggested that I clean and grease the driveshaft. Did that and it was needed. I thought maybe the noise seemed to go away but now its back. I can feel a scrape (in the floorboards) when I am crawling forward in first gear. Does my driveshaft need to be done again ? What about the U-joint ? Has anyone had this problem and traced it to a bad U-joint ? Any other ideas ?
  25. I have... 4 weeks ago on my way home from work, I was trying to pull away at a stop light (trying is the key word there) and no forward motion... but, I did have an interesting (and distressing) chattering sound. You know the sound... like a stripped gear. Well thanks to a fellow VR member and a guy a WHOLE lot smarter than me (insert jokes here), Klaus and I (mostly Klaus w/ me getting in the way) got the transmissions replaced. In the middle gear area it was broken in about 3 pieces. It is swapped and re-assembled, and next weekend it should be back in the bike and I'll be back on 2 wheels... I've been accused of being crabby lately... I really need some cycle therapy!! Oh... I know... it didn't happen if theres no pics. I took these with my cell phone, so the quality is just ok...
