  1. Hey, any tire pros, A Harley friend (Heritage) has asked me a question. I'm guessing she has HD Dunlop 404. She rides local and even did SC to CA last year, so she rides! Your input might help her. I've had so many problems with my front tire. Riding back and forth to work I heard a lot of road noise. New tire, this must be usual! After looking at the tire I noticed the rotation was going the wrong way. So now I need to know whether I should leave the tire as it is or do I have SOMEONE fix the issue. My main question is will the tire seperate like a car tire if you rotate it wrong? This is my front tire and I'm a bit WORRIED. I don't want to be going 80 mph and have a blow out. Thanks EVERYONE. Deb Thanks in advance, Mike G in SC
  2. I know this topic comes up a lot but its hard to find much on specifically lowering the RSTD because the majority of the expertise here is with the Venture, so the threads seem to quickly go that route and especially since the Venture can be lowered for free.. Actually this does also apply to the Venture - just wanting advice on lowering the bike using a lowering kit rather than the free Venture mod. I have done a lot of research on this as to better understand the options and caveats especially since I know nothing much about front suspension. So while doing this research… I compiled this summary DOCUMENT of what I gathered from all of you experts… Please let me know if you see any gaps or mistakes and hope it helps someone in the future.. But I do have some questions still.. It appears Barons has two options for lowering the front.. 1) A lowering kit (only two 1.5 in spacers) $25 2) A Performance lowering kit (the above plus Gold Valve Cartridge Emulators and progressive springs) $290 Questions: 1) Given the price difference… is the Performance kit really worth that much more money? 2) Knowing nothing about front forks… how does adding two spacers.. lower the bike? 3) I would probably have the dealer do this as I am not equipped for this.. espec the performance kit if I went that route.. but would the basic spacer kit be MUCH easier or not really? BTW, 2007 RSTD I have had the Butler mod on my stock seat, and it does help. I have 29”-30” inseam, so while its not imperative, I would just like to get a little lower for backing up and stability when two up at a standstill. So debating on if this is worth it or not.. Thanks for any advice, Globewalker
  3. Anyone out there riding with these springs in the front, what air pressure are you running in the forks if any at all.. I was told that you needn't have to have air pressure as the springs were heavy duty enough to negate the need for air pressure. Not sure if I actually need to add air to my front end but ya never know.. ?
  4. I put a new front tire on the trike today, and while the front tire was off, I said to myself, what a perfect time to put a front fender rail on! Sooo, when I go over to Pioneer Motorsports to pick up the tire, I ask if they happen to have one in stock and they check and find yes they do have one in stock. We go to get it and we can't find it. Why?? Because Chad had already packed it in the trailer and when we ask about it, he tells me it is already promised to Freebird!!!!! Oh well, I will need to replace my front brakes before August anyway so maybe then...
  5. I have a 2004 RSMV and the front brakes are extremely noisey and very annoying. The bike only has 22K KM (approx 13750 Miles) and still has the factory pads. Even though they are still good I want to change them to get rid of the noise. I as thinking about going to the EBC and was wondering which pads, the organic, ceramic, ????? Please advise.
  6. after talking to some members yesterday i got some answers but forgot one question so here it goes. check my pressure before riding and the front is 36 and the rear was 44.5,my question is if i drive 2.7 miles to the station(outside temp is 75)and recheck them and i want my front at 38 and rear at 48 do i just ad the differance (say front i need to ad two pounds)from the temp at the station example the front temp went up to 37..5 do i make it read 39.5 which will be ading the org two pounds or not. guess i could of wordrd it a bit easyier.
  7. Ok, I admit it. Some times I put things off a bit longer than I should. I installed new EBC pads front and rear about 18,000 miles ago. I've had to change out the front ones on both sides a couple of times due to caliper leaks and forks seals leaking so I've never worn a set down on the front. As for the back, I took them out and swapped sides about 8,000 miles ago to keep them wearing even. They looked pretty good back then. So.... I had bought new sets for the front and rear to install this spring and had them on hand. I had blown out another set of fork seals so I repaired that and held off on the new front pads until I was sure the new seals would hold. Needless to say the front pads were a lil slick with the oiled pads and I was depending on the rear brake all the time. Only took a couple of days to check the seals and then installed the new pads. I was going to install the rear pads when I mounted my new rear tire, which did not arrive as I had hoped so I put that off again for another week. Over the weekend I was cleaning the bike and had the bags off and looked at the caliper. I could see a lot of piston showing. Pulled the caliper off and dropped the pads. Yikes. Good thing I had swapped sides the last time. Both side were intact and evenly worn but shall we say, a lil thin. Rotor still looks great and still smooth. Good thing I live in the good ole flatlands. So all the new pads were on the day of the "Cager Club Sandwich" incident. At least that was good timing I guess. So one of the rears compared to a fairly new used pad from the front. Next time I'll be checking more often. Mike
  8. I'm looking at replaceing my front tire with an E'3. I'm running an Avon on the back now, will this cause any problems? Also, where do you guys buy your tires? Thanks for help.
  9. I'm changing out my front tire, what kind of greese should I use on the axel? Thanks
  10. I know some of you have done this... Riding down the highway...and a sharp rock pops up right in your tire path and run over it...you hear it and you feel it. I bet I have done it a dozen times over the course of several years...but today I was inspecting my Dunlop E3's and noticed my front tire had a very small "v" cut into the high rubber tread. I took a small screw driver and tried to "probe"it to see how deep and it APPEARS to be superficial...I only have 8000 miles on this front tire. It looks like it would be wore down after a few hundred miles... I know that they can all be different, but just curious if anyone else has done this before...and did you replace or continue to roll.
  11. My closest call ever to being in a motorcycle accident. Canadian (Asian) pulled around me doing 60 - 65 in a 35 mph zone (2 lane road) Pulled back in front of me with less than 2 feet of clearance so he wouldn't head on a car in the other lane. The passenger in the back seat was watching and put her hand over her mouth. I locked up the back brakes, collected myself and followed him into the casino parking lot. I had to follow him around the lot for a bit because he probably thought I was going to clean his clock. When he finally backed into a parking spot I put the front wheel of my motorcycle right up to his bumper and motioned for him to step out. He shook his head "No" so I repeated the motion two more times. He got out and I chewed his a$$ and reminded him about the speed limit how close he came to hitting me. I'm still shaking...that was close.
  12. After seeing the idea in this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46995 I started looking for one. Found one from the Stratoliner S (RoadlinerS wheel is also the same)that was polished. Ultimately decided this was easier (and cheaper) than buying the painted Strat/Roadliner wheel and having it either polished or chromed. Was able to get the complete rim with tire and rotors. The Strat and Roadliner rotors are full floaters so will be ideal when I do the caliper upgrade. The tire is 130/70R-18. Its a radial and only has a 63H load rating (600lbs) versus the stock 150/80-16 71H loadrating (761 lbs). Haven't worked out yet how big a deal that is going to be if any as of yet. 130/70-18 is the same size front tire as the wing and it has the same load rating. Since no one makes a 15" radial motorcycle rear tire, my choices are to run mixed radial front with bias rear or purchase a 130/70-18 Bias Dunlop E3 Front although the recommended rim width for the Bias E3 in that size is only 3 inches and the Strat rim is 4" wide. There is a 140-80R -18 front radial that is close to the stock OA diameter and width and fits a 4" wide rim. That would fill out the fender more. Riding it, there doesn't seem at this point to be any noticable ill effects from the Size, radial, bias mix. That being said I'm in SOuth Florida- 11 turns in 318 miles- Not sure what it will feel like in the mountains or pushing it hard. The Slow speed handling is noticably improved as would be expected from the smaller tire. It looks to be over all about .8 inches shorter in OA height, something I don't really want, but it is what its unless I replace the tire. These are all the caveats I can think of at the moment. As I ride it more may have some more input. Put some pictures here and put them all in a gallery. RSTDdog

    Wobble at 55-60

Ride an 2003 RSV with a sidecar. Have a front end vibration at 55 up to 60. Only there, no other speed. Occurs in 4th or 5th. Straight roads or curves. Bike has 19,750 on it, going in for the 20K in the next couple of weeks. I doubt it's cupping, not willing to believe that-seems every shop says 'cupping' so they can sell a tire. So, any suggestions? I think it's a balancing issue. Front tire is a Dunlop D404F. Thanks.
  14. Anybody have some suggestions for a front fender mud flap to keep the dirt off the radiator? Also I want to add some hiway pegs to the little front crash bars. I would like an adjustable offset style to put the boots on when freeway riding. Any good suggestions that you have used?
  15. You may have heard that I got my bike home last Wednesday following three months of repairs, and that there was a loud backfiring. The dealer had been unable to determine the source, but 5 minutes with Squidley and we had a prime suspect: the dealer hadn't hooked up a vacuum tube to the AIS (I presume). Pic: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3303/5699095405_9f3c32f19e.jpg This particular tube goes to the front, behind the right front exhaust header. We could see the lonely nipple with a mirror. We just couldn't reach it. Squidley says he'll be available to take off the exhaust so that it can be hooked up, hopefully solving the very loud backfire. But isn't this something I could do myself? First, is there an easier way to connect it? Force my daughter into anorexia so that she can reach in, perhaps? Loosen something or other, move it out of the way, tighten back up? I have an RSTD, so the front is somewhat more open than an RSV (I am posting in the RSV forum because it's seen more and almost as applicable). Second, if I do remove the exhaust headers, do I have remove both, or just the front? What all do I have to remove to get to that header bolt? Thirdly, thanks to those of you who will demand that I take the bike back to the dealer to have them fix their shoddy workmanship, but no. I've already been without her for three months, and I can't waste another month having them fix this. Dave
  16. I was talking to a tire guy and he mentioned a foam insert that he can get to put into the front tire. Supposedly if I run over something and cut the front tire it will allow me to maintain control and safely stop. I had never heard of this before but it did make me wonder. Is it worth the $35 bucks plus the extra few bucks to have him put it in? Anyone ever hear of it before? Shaun
  17. Trying different things but whats the best air pressure for the front and rear and dial setting, 1,2,or 3. I ride most of the time weighing about 225. When my wife ride with me thats about 150 more. Now i have the dial on 2 and air about 35 in each. Seems soft and comfy for me but front has bottomed out on some bumps.
  18. We're trying to locate the National Rally Banner for Cody. The Skyline Motor Inn wants to display it out front during the rally..... Who has it?? :cody
  19. I need to replace the front right fairing panel on my '86 VR. I might be able to repair the one I have, but it is quite badly broken. Does anyone know if all the First Gens used the same front fairing? I read somewhere that they did. If that is the case I will only have a color problem. So ... Will the front fairing panels from the early first gens fit the '86 on models? Thanks.
  20. Tried to fire up the Venture last night and it will not start. Checked exhaust headers when she did start for a brief period and the back L&R were hot. Front L&R were cold. She would repeatedly fire and lug on the rear two cylinders for approx. 15 to 30 seconds and die. What should I check and how?
  21. Need a hand please. I need to remove the front caliper to inspect squeaky pads and have removed both bolts. I assumed the caliper would slide off, but it will not. Have I missed something or is there a method used for removal? Thanks in advance. Mike
  22. ughhhh..I hate brakes. I rebuilt my calipers on my 84 and have been bleeding or attempting to bleed the brakes.. the front right is fine, but I simply cannot get the air out of the left front/ rear...no matter how much i bleed with a vac, i still get a steady stream of bubbles....much more than normal.. I have to be getting air in the system somewhere, but can't find where...checked banjo bolts and bleeders....calipers are working.....rear seems to have less air than the front left... any idea where i might have a leak.. i never messed with the junction near the steering neck. darn.. this is beyond frustrating.. I've been battling this for days... clay
  23. Had a set of Dunlop E3's installed this afternoon...(selected largely on the reviews of the fine folks of this here site) initial impressions are that they are much better than the original Bridgestones it had on it. Have not really got them scuffed in, or ridden enough to talk handling but the front is SO much quieter than the Bridgestone was! That was the noisiest tire I have ever had on a bike.
  24. I am going to take my front wheel into the dealer to get a tire put on because they want a fortune to do it. I had a quick look tonight and it doesn't look that difficult. Is there anything I should be aware of? Do I have to remove the brakes before removing? Do I need to do anything with the bearings? 44,000 Kms (26,400 Miles) Thanks, John
  25. Is it possible to build a headset for a 83 venture royale? I have all the cables, front and back... just wondering if it is possible?
