  1. I just read this on another forum and thought it was interesting. I did do a 'whois' to verify the domain is owned by a David Mikkelson. Don't know if the story is true but it would not surprise me. Truth about SNOPES For the past few years _www.snopes.com_ (http://www.snopes.com/) has positioned itself, or others have labeled it, as the 'tell all final word' on any comment, claim and email. But for several years people tried to find out who exactly was behind _snopes.com_ (http://snopes.com/). Only recently did Wikipedia get to the bottom of it - kinda makes you wonder what they were hiding. Well, finally we know. It is run by a husband and wife team - that's right, no big office of investigators and researchers, no team of lawyers. It's just a mom-and-pop operation that began as a hobby. David and Barbara Mikkelson in the San Fernando Valley of California started the website about 13 years ago - and they have no formal background or experience in investigative research. After a few years it gained popularity believing it to be unbiased and neutral, but over the past couple of years people started asking questions who was behind it and did they have a selfish motivation? The reason for the questions - or skepticisms - is a result of _snopes.com _ (http://snopes.com/) claiming to have the bottom line facts to certain questions or issue when in fact they have been proven wrong. Also, there were criticisms the Mikkelsons were not really investigating and getting to the 'true' bottom of various issues. I can personally vouch for that complaint. A few months ago, when my State Farm agent, Bud Gregg, in Mandeville hoisted a political sign referencing Barack Obama and made a big splash across the internet, 'supposedly' the Mikkelsons' claim to have researched this issue before posting their findings on _snopes.com_ (http://snopes.com/) . In their statement they claimed the corporate office of State Farm pressured Gregg into taking down the sign, when in fact nothing of the sort ever took place. I personally contacted David Mikkelson (and he replied back to me) thinking he would want to get to the bottom of this, and I gave him Bud Gregg's contact phone numbers - and Bud was going to give him phone numbers to the big execs at State Farm in Illinois who would have been willing to speak with him about it. He never called Bud. In fact, I learned from Bud Gregg that no one from _snopes..com_ (http://snopes.com/) ever contacted anyone with State Farm. Yet, _snopes.com_ (http://snopes.com/) issued a statement as the 'final factual word' on the issue as if they did all their homework and got to the bottom of things - not! Then it has been learned the Mikkelsons are very Democrat and extremely liberal. As we all now know from this presidential election, liberals have a purpose agenda to discredit anything that appears to be conservative. There has been much criticism lately over the internet with people pointing out the Mikkelsons' liberalism revealing itself in their website findings. Gee, what a shock? So, I say this now to everyone who goes to _www.snopes.com_ (http://www.snopes.com/) to get what they think to be the bottom line facts...'proceed with caution.' Take what it says at face value and nothing more. Use it only to lead you to their references where you can link to and read the sources for yourself. Plus, you can always google a subject and do the research yourself. It now seems apparent that's all the Mikkelsons do. After all, I can personally vouch from my own experience for their 'not' fully looking into things.
  2. Does anyone have radiator cowlings [black midnight]......I noticed today I have a tennis ball size hole in left side. I also have a 2000 Venture trunk bottom new in Yamaha box [red] to trade or sell.
  3. Ok, I'm on a roll now. I been putting it off all winter and now the bike is close to being ready to ride and I am finding more things to mess with. I had my saddlebags and trunk down in my basement shop cleaning them up and installing new LED marker lights where the reflectors were. A little wiring, making bags liners for the bottom, just killing time. Now I got the polishing compound and the wax flying and I notice there are a few minor, very minor cracks in the bottom of the bags and at the back where the mounting studs are. If I press around them they show up pretty good when I put pressure around them other wise they are not much more than hair line. No biggie, I'll just run a bead of epoxy on the inside and tie them back together. Now I never noticed this before so maybe I'm not paying enough attention but when I opened the bags to look at the cracks from the inside they aren't there. Before I strip down the bag shells and remove the aluminum edging are these shells laminated or what? They don't appear to be two layers but cracked on one side and not the other? Not possible. There is no damage to the bags, just a few hairline cracks. I'd prefer not to make repairs to the outside until the day comes that I decide to do what minor body work needs to be done and do a new paint job. Stress cracks make me crazy.
  4. Ok, I have a small problem and I'm sure I'm not the first to experience this. I added new grips to my bike about a month ago. Now when I try to set my CControl the switch will not let me use it to SET the speed. I can use the top part that is for Resume and the bottom cancel works but when I push on the part that should be for "set" speed it wont go in at all. I took the switch housing back apart thinking I had a screw too tight or something but even off the switch still would not let me push in on the bottom part that "sets" your cruise. Any ideas? Am I gonna have to get a new switch?
  5. Has anyone had problems with the auto volume control. My 84 has gave me problems since ive had it. I can set the volume to where i can hear it comfortable while riding and all of the sudden the thing blairs loud. So i turn it down and a few minutes later im turning it back up because its gotten to quiet. it does this constantly and it drives me crazy. I have removed the bottom unit where the auto volume control is located and tried cleaning it with no results. Does any one know how or if it can be by passed or do i need to replace it.
  6. Last year while riding the squelch on my CB quit working.Turning the squelch knob has no effect. Now when riding I have to either listen to radio or CB. If i turn on CB it over rides radio. Took CB out and checked all connections. Took bottom plate off CB to check internal connections all seemed good. Any ideas before I have to bite the bullet and buy another CB?
  7. I don't care to read every thread so I personally would like to see a full tool bar on the bottom of the pages, allowing me to go "home" or the "forum list" without having to scroll back to the top. If there's enough interest and it is possible, could this be possible?
  8. Today my battery on my 06 RSV stopped working after a 8 mile ride. While sitting in the parking lot at a park in Florida. I had shutoff the engine and left the key in ACC while I was adjusting my GPS and radio. This only took about 10 min. until I tried to start the RSV. All I heard was the clicking noise from the starter. I jumped started the RSV and rode home about 10 miles and tested the battery with a load-tester. It's just on the boarder-line, but it looks like it needs to be replaced. I'm slowly charging it now and will try again later to load test it. Questions: 1) How long does these battery last (YTX20L-BS) 12V 18 AH ? 2) What does the stamped dial indicator mean on the bottom of the battery, I have three dail indicator stamped on the bottom. The first number is 3, second 1, and third is 5. Is this battery 2005 or 4 years old? 3) The final question, what battery should I get that will last more than 2 1/2 years and should I look for a higher amp hour battery?

    Lifting the RSV

    My current ride is a V*1100. Using a lift under it is quite interesting because the engine is lower than the frame. I use hockey pucks strategically placed on the lift arms to avoid lifting the bike by the engine (although some have said that is no big deal). My question is: Does the RSV have a flat bottom frame with the bottom of the engine above the bottom of the frame? Or is it like the V* and creativity time again? Thanks from a prospective RSV buyer.     Just got back...

    Did a little 4 day run...did not take a lot of pics, but I had a great time in a great part of the country... Will post the pics...and if you can guess the location of the pic I will buy you a beer when we meet up.   13. Took the time to put on saddle bag rails, both top and bottom. Thing is with everything i have read on here i was expecting problems. But for some reason everything matched right up , has a great line with the bottom of the bag. Hardes part of the whole job was making sure i mesured and drilled the holes for the top right, fighured if i messed that up i was in for a major problem. But all and all it is nice to know you can come here and find help with your problems. Just maybe someone from yamaha comes here and reads this stuff as well. Thank you all
  14. Is anyone having trouble connecting to the ebay link at the bottom of the home page . When I go to the bottom of the ebay list I see that there is 290 articles for sale. When I click on the link it comes up with 2700 articles for sale many of which are not related to bikes. Does anyone have a suggestion???
  15. 2008 rsv thinking about hopnel tuxedo panel, question? how do you remove rubber tank panel , do you remove the 2 bolts on either side of gas fill ? what holds the panel on at the bottom ? any input would be appreciated . thanks mike b.

A FEW WEEKS AGO MY 93 STARTED TO BACK FIRE WHEN I ROLL OFF THE GAS ONCE IN A WHILE,SO I WAS THINKING IT MUST HAVE A EXHAUST LEAK SOME WHERE, TODAY I WAS CHECKING IT OUT AND FOUND MY COLLECTOR IS LEAKING FROM THE SMALL HOLES IN THE BOTTOM. SO IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ONE I COULD BUY TO REBUILD OR A GOOD USED ONE IM IN NEED OF IT. THANKS!
  17. What is the most common reason that my forks bottom out so easily, 83 venture, holds air pressure, but sure hits bottom hard and often. Want to know before going back to selling dealer. Thanks Also just had front bumper break off, coming home from work. What a surprise to hear it hit the front wheel and fly out from underneath. Brackets are broke.
  18. Until I get familiar enough w/ the bike, I will probably be asking a 1000 questions. I just traded in my Honda VTX for this beauty. Can you take a look at the pics. Does it look like the leak is coming from the 2 tubes (and what are those 2 tubes for) or does it look like the rear shock is leaking? If you think it is the rear shock, do you think the bike is still drivable? Unless I am misreading the manual, it says for the shocks (front and rear) standard PSI is 0. I am a little confused by that. If it is 0 then why bother having air shocks? My thought process is, if I lose air pressure because of this leak, it won't hurt anything because the manual says standard is 0. Don't really care to spend that kinda dough if I don't have to. I am riding a 1999 Venture. Thanks.
  19. Evening all, I come in search of knowledge and advice. I'm rebuilding the forks on an 89 MkII and I've run into some oddities. Quick background, someone previously has been into the bike who shouldn't have. When I went to take the handlebars off, both pinch bolts were backed way out. There are other things like this with the bike. So, I create a tool to disassemble the forks (worked well, cheap, write up to follow if anyone is interested.) and got things separated. The bottoms of these forks have been beat to death! The hole in the bottom that the allen bolt should come out of was so mangled that judicious use of a dremel tool was necessary to get the bolt all the way out. Once everything was apart, it appears I have some issues. 1. I appear to be missing the tapered spindle, part #26H-23173-00-00 from one side. What the heck? I've looked everywhere, don't THINK I could have lost it, but maybe. 2. And this is where I could use some guidance. There are still some parts "stuck" in the bottom of the upper fork tube. I can see and feel what looks like a white plastic notched or "castellated" washer type part, and there appear to be some parts "above" that. I've tried some judicious tapping with an appropriately sized socket to drive them out, but don't want to use too much force on these parts. 3. Neither fork as, as far as I can find, the two washers #26H-2319L-00-00 or the single valve spring #26H-2319M-00-00. I'm wondering if the forks could have been assembled improperly, and now those parts are jammed in the bottom of the fork tube. 4. The fork springs that were in the bike are about 75% of the length of the Progressives I'm replacing them with. I'll post pics, but the difference is ridiculous. The forks had absolutely no pre-load on them whatsoever, even with some gargantuan spaces made out of electrical conduit. So, should I continue to try to get the parts out of the bottom of the upper fork tube, or are they supposed to be where they are? I'm really thinking they need to come out, but would like other opinions. Thanks everyone! Paul

    Boats

    I know this is a Motocycle site but I trust the members here more than anybody else. Thinking of buying a used boat. Wanted to know some of the things I need to watch for. I know its not suppose to have holes in the bottom ? Right ?   21. OK, what have I done wrong or not done at all? I am attempting to replace the forks seals in my '83. I have gone according to the tech article and have gotten to the point where I pull (pound) the bottom forks off, and I can't get them to budge. Everything else that was in the article is done. The oil drained, 10mm cap screws removed from bottom of forks, upper assembly and springs, dust caps and retainer clips...but when i try doing the slide hammer technique it is like hitting solid steel. What exactly is it that is still holding the bottom forks on that I am pounding against? I even tried putting a 2x6 on the front axle bolt and pounding on that with a large hammer, but I'm at the point that I'm afraid I'm going to bend or break something. Is there something that was not listed in the tech article that I don't know about? One other thing, well actually two. One, (assuming I ever get them forks off) the replacement seal says: "oil side" on one side and "air side" on the other. Is the oil side the bottom and air side the top? and two: Do you put the new fork oil in the top of the upper tube last after everything but the top tube caps is done? I can pound a little harder if I won't break anything, but already I am raising the back tire off the floor with each stroke. Any thoughts for this old hillbilly?

  23. I just picked up an 89 Venture Royale. It has an oil leak above the exhaust crossover when running. The left frame behind the shift lever has oil on it. I think it must be the Middle Gear Cover because: - I can't see anything down the back of the engine or on top of the transmission except a coat of grime. And the oil on the floor looks like it just came out of the bottle, no dirt. - PO said the clutch slave was leaking and he hadn't been able to fix it (not clear if he tried). - The bottom of the cover is gooped up like someone tried an external patch or put lots of RTV in the joint when assembling. Before I pull the cover are there any known issues I should be looking for first? Thanks for feedback.
  24. I'd like to know how do I know if I have a bad rear shock. When I ride with a passenger it seems to bottom out easily. But I'm 300 lbs. & my wife weighs about 140 lbs. So I realize there is some weight on there. I have one of those hand pumps and I give it a few pumps before we both ride, but it seems we still bottom out easily. When I ride alone it takes a pretty extreme bump to make me bottom out.
  25. when i hit my horn the front one doesnt sound like its activating fullalso i can see that it draws my headlamp down. the bottom right one seems to working fine. whats going on?
