  1. Just put a trunk light on my 2006 Venture today and works great. I found as a suggestion on earlier forum to get from autozone a WE6-197 led strip brake light. I mounted right to bottom of trunk. It was suggested to use brackets. I had some super stick 3M foam double backed tape used for heavy mounting. It seems to hold excellent since light bar is light weight. If not I will use brackets later. Did the suggestion with two diodes, one with 330 ohm resistor in line for running light and direct from lower brake light. This conversion worked well and in my opinion looks good. At $25.00 for light, diodes and resistor and tube of solder and some shrink tubing, you can't go wrong if you are on a budget and want more visibility. I am going to try and find some chrome caps for the ends where the original plastic brackets were located to dress it up some. For the money I saved, I am now going to invest in a lowering kit as next project.
  2. Hey Guys, I'm looking for a trunk latch for my 85. One side of mine is damaged and missing so I'm looking for a complete replacement. Anyone have any ideas of where I can find one used or new? Thanks !
  3. Seems like I've seen a post on here before about the trunk lid stay being changed but I can't find it now. Has anyone else ever modified the trunk lid to open farther? I don't see why it can't open all the way up to 90 degrees or even so far as to let the backrest lie on the rear seat. What are your thoughts or links?
  4. Alrighty.. just got back from installing two new Firesticks on my Midnight Venture with mixed results.. a lot of work and it LOOKS great but with a few probs.. A quick note, hopefully someone has an idea to help me out.. The AM/FM antenna was the hardest part and it turned out awesome.. good audio but with a few weeks of rain coming our way it's going to be hard to test for range. However, the CB antenna install was a shambles.. argh. Right now, when I press the CB button on the control unit, I get a CB:ERR message and it shuts off.. oops! Though I tested the AM/FM radio before putting everything together, I failed to test the CB at all.. argh.. I'm sure I plugged in everything under the trunk when I re-installed it.. Antenna cable plugged from antenna to box under trunk OK.. but before I start yanking things apart again, is there something I should be doing first? I must say, it does look awesome with a midnight venture hehe
  5. Taking a risk of this being a dumb question, but here goes. I am looking for a hard (not leather) travel trunk that will fit my 2005 RSTD. I have searched several threads and most of it relates to the venture. Will a Venture travel Trunk fit a RSTD? I have seen several places on the internet that sell travel trunks but nothing that is specific to my ride. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am not worried about the color because one of the guys I work with paints cars as a sideline, painting the trunk to match my colors would be easy for him to do.
  6. Do any of you happen to have the Yamaha cordura nylon tank bag? The one that sits on top of the trunk rack? I ran across one on Craigslist and bought it. I like it but when I read the description of them online, they say "comes with rain cover". This one did not have the rain cover I don't think. What does it consist of?
  7. has anyone tried or had success in getting the trunk to stop rattling all over the place? such a beautiful machine, quiet, smooth, and the dang trunk sounds like it belongs on a tonka truck.
  8. I'm looking to install a trunk and cigarette lighter on my 2006 RSTD. What are my options? I've looked but haven't found much. Will a Venture trunk fit?
  9. As some of you may know I have been fighting the busted trunk bag problem for a couple of months now and am close to having completed (purchased used bottom on e-bay for $200.00, having to dismantle the backrest, replace the broken bracket welded to fram for bottom screws). All that is left is to attach the frabrecated bracket to the bike frame and put the screws through the metal and rubber plates in the bottom of the trunk bag. Just learned today (after reading a reply to a post from last week) that this is a Yahama recall and they will fix (don't know if they just furnish the plaltes or replace the trunk or what but am taking the busted bottom and license receipt to the local dealer to see what is involved). Just wanted to alert any other 99 owners to check with a dealer first if you have this problem (wish I had checked first).
  10. Hello to all; I have just experienced some issues with the lower fairings and the travel trunk. The lower fairing left side (saddled up) is cracked at the point in which it mounts to the inner fairing cover / frame. As far as the travel trunk lid, the male latch mount on the left side (looking in from back) has cleanly separated and sheared off. I have read that these types of issues are covered under the five year warrantee. If so, is there a generic claim number to be used or is it a case by case basis? The local dealers by me are not very friendly when it comes to these warrantee issues. Nobody wants to be bothered. Can this be handled directly with Yamahahaha? Thanks for the info, when time avails:feedback:. Till next time, ride safe. Busta.
  11. I have a very nice '99 RSV, but I am getting the most annoying rattle and vibration from the area of the backrest, speaker housing or trunk that I cannot identify. I've tightened every bolt and screw I can find, lubed the trunk lid hinges, removed and reinstalled everything from the front seat on back to the trunk, and still cannot find the source. I've had my wife sit backward on the rear seat while we rode up and down the street to try to isolate it, but even she can't nail it down. The speakers work OK at all volumes, so I don't think it's them, unless it's inside the housing itself. I'm stumped. Any ideas? Thanks.
  12. On my last day of my New England trip I was loading the bike up at the hotel and I thought the trunk looked a little low. I didn't pay attention as I was in a hurry to get home. Once I got home and off loaded everything I saw what the problem was. Not one, but both bolts holding the trunk to the bracket next to the bags had come out. I checked and tightened pretty much everything I could find before leaving for my trip but never thought of checking these. I asked the parts guy at the Yamaha dealership if he'd ever see this before and in all his years he had not. The bolts were replaced and all is fine but better check yours.
  13. Just an update on the continuing saga of replacing the broken trunk bottom on my ride. I was able to secure a matching bottom from e-bay (with the help of FreezyRider). It was listed for $400.00, I offered $100.00 and purchased for $200.00. Ordered the kit for the new bottom which is just a metal plate for the top and a rubber one for the bottom. I JB Welded the metal plates to the inside and went about removing the old trunk. Lesson # 1, remove all screws and bolts that you can see first. We ended up taking the speakers apart becasuse we did not realize the screws holding the brackes for the inside net pocket also held the trunk to the backrest. I must say I am very disapointed in the quality (or lack therof) for the plates welded to the frame that the anchor screws going through the bottom to hold the trunk to the frame. It's not metal and not plastic but breaks like plastic and we had to cut off the right side plate and are trying to frabricate something to replace it with. This is for sure a two person job, just getting the hinges from the top fastened to the bottom ( you have to have the lid partly closed to get it to aline but partly open to line up the screws coming from the outside). Will keep you informed as to progress. Just want to say I would not have known where to start without all the great help from this web site, you guys are the best support group since Woddy Allen in Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex but were Afraid to Ask (for all us old timers who remember the movie)!!!!
  14. Brand new trunk on Ebay.................... Yamaha Travel Trunk in Black XVZ12TK Venture NEW 1983
  15. Dano, Have a question for ya............................... You posted on a thread that BigHack started saying that off-set brackets can be made to move the trunk back 2 inches on a 1st Gen ------- can the same thing be done on a 2nd GEn (2007)?????????????? We have moved the bolts to the second set of holes, but I was wondering if it is SAFE to move the trunk back further????????? If I could sit back a little further my stiff right leg would be in a better position on the bike and I wouldn't have to alter the seats so much.
  16. I have a trunk from an 83 or 84(I think. It's smaller than my 85 trunk) that I'd like to get rid of. It's got a crack on the right side of the lid, and it has been outside on my picnic table for a while now. Missing the lock, and I don't know what else hardware for mounting it. Free to whoever wants it, just pay shipping. I don't need it, I got it when I was trying to find all the parts for my 85. Let me know!!
  17. I am looking at a blue venture that has a trunk rack. I just dont like the look of a rack on the back. Is there anyone on here with a 2007 blue venture that would like a rack? Maybe we could work something out where we could exchange the whole trunk lid? Let me know. thanks.
  18. Nope....not that rack. You guys, always one tracking it. Well now that you're here anyway I'm looking for a bigger trunk rack. The one that came on the bike is of unknown make or model to me and as I don't get to see any 1st Gens around here so I'm going to throw this out there. Mine is only 12" wide and 9" deep. It is mounted on a set of Z brackets to the truck to raise it high enough to clear the backrest. The pattern I'd like to match for the mounting is 4" X 9 1/4" to use the existing holes and backing supports inside the trunk. If a larger one had longer support legs to give it some height that would work. If a larger rack had short legs or bolted into the frame of the rack as the current one does I could reuse the Z brackets and mount to a 4" X 11 1/4" pattern. I've got a trunk bag I'd like to be able to use but it's a bit wide for my rack. I'd be looking for something about 18" wide and maybe 12" deep but I could get by with 9" or 10" if needed. I've had not much luck on fleaBay for anything that might work so I'd thought I'd ask if anyone had a parts bike with a rack they aren't going to be using that might meet my needs. I'd buy outright or some horse trading for my old rack which is in very good condition. I'm open to any suggestions, advice or offers. Thanks Mike
  19. Has anyone used this Kuryakyn trunk rack on a RSV? Model 7139 What about the mounting patern. DO you think it will get in the way of the hinges? http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/IMID/1750 Also, if anyone has an Yamaha OEM rack for sale (STR-4XY62-50-00) let me know.
  20. Has Yamaha stopped making the trunk racks. Thay have been on backorder forever and I'm a little ticked off that I can't get one. (if someone has one, please email me at my "ToolmanRR" Yahoo email) I've seen the ones that are used on the Goldwing but I'm not too crazy about the pressure point the legs put upon the lid. Has anyone had issues with the Honda trunk rack breaking a lid? Does anyone else make a rack that will work on the RSV. (I won't use JC Whittney's rack) ToolmanRR (AZ)
  21. About 1/3 of the lights are out in the trunk rear spoiler on my 04 midnight. Anyone know were I can order the diode strip without having to replace the whole thing?
  22. I created this disaster myself, since I removed the lighted spoiler from the trunk, yesterday, to see if I could determine why 3 of the lights, in the strip, were not working. I couldn't see a way to repair the problem, so I put it back on, using loctite on the screws. After returning from a short ride today, of an hour or so, I saw the light strip dangling from the wires and the spoiler was gone. We back tracked the route with the car right away, but never found it. I loved the looks with that spoiler on the trunk, now it looks naked! I now need to get another one. If any of you know of any place that I can buy one, please let me know. The color is like Plum or purple, but what ever color that is available, I'm sure it can be painted. I need your help! Thanks, Owen.
  23. Hello there Iam looking for a back trunk lens for my 1985 1200.It raps around the back of the trunk covering my brake lights. If any one has one or knows were I can get one with out spending $300.00 That would be great Thanks Stan
  24. As I stated earlier this month I discovered the prior owner of my 99 RSV had busted out the bottom of the trunk and several of the screws had or were pulling throught the holes. Joe was kind enought to hook me up with an e-bay add for a replacement in the correct color ( got it for $200.00). It just arrived and I noticed some very fine hair line cracks on the bottom of this one also (but not all the way through. Joe also gave me a web site to get different fastners that have rubber and metal reinforcements (hope they work). I am worndering if I should put down a layer of epoxy or something to reinforce the bottom prior to instillation. Any thoughts would be welcome.
  25. Just a quick question - do 1st gen trunks have a seal (?rubber?) around the "lip" of either the upper or lower part of the trunk?? I am not a "fair weather rider" therefore I do ride in the rain.......that being said water has found its way into my trunk and I'm having trouble trying to figure out where it's coming from. I can't see any obvious cracks or holes and it appears that the design of the lip around the trunk and lid may not require one but then again I don't know if I'm missing something or not. advise, comments, hints and suggestions all welcome Thanks Ed
