  1. I went out to ride today. Started the 04 up and pulled it out of the gararge to load up. She started just fine. Battery is less than one year old and is kept on a battery tender. Loaded GPS and everything up then went to start it but nothing happened. No juice, no nothing. The GPS works fine and is getting power to it. Not a mechanic here so all I did was take the seat off and check the battery connections and they are fine. And the kill switch is not the problem either. Any thoughts?
  2. Ok folks.. need some help here. Out on the weekend for about 1300 Kms. At one point stopped to stretch etc. Went to get started and the engine won't turn over. Found out that I'd hit the kill switch to off with my helmet. So I turned it back to run and still nothing. I rocked it a few times and at one point I heard a click inside the bike. After that it started and I had no more problems. Is there a relay or something attached to the kill switch? How do I prevent this from happening again? I never use that switch (except accidentally) HELP?? Wayne
  3. I have an 84 VR and am not happy with the hot starting issue. Changed the cables and using an Odyssey battery. It has never NOT started but sometimes makes me nervous. Can someone tell me what years of the V-Max would fit? Wayne
  4. See pictures here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2892&id=1756953978&l=72acf347c2 I am number 64, bruisers are wearing black. The first five minutes of the game were tough. Bridge City scored a touchdown and a field goal right away. I made two mistakes by hiking the ball over the QB's head twice in a row. The bruisers defense was excellent, giving the offense a chance to get acts together and started putting points on the board. We developed a rhythm, and the game went really well. The knights were kept to 9 points until the final 5 seconds of the game, where they had a break-away pass for a touch down, but it was too late for the Knights.
  5. Thought I would run this by some of you... I just did an oil change and decided to switch to Amsoil 20W-50 and new filter. Started it and Drove it about 3 miles, shut it off and it set for a little while, when I restarted it, the engine started tapping (like valve noise). No engine oil light came on, but noise went away after about 30 seconds... Oil level was at the top of the fill mark (with engine off). Never did this with Dino oil, just wondered what caused it to start the loud ticking noise.... Sounded like it was coming more from the front of the engine. It did do it again, but not as loud and not as long.... anyone ever experienced this happening to them ?
  6. I bought this '86 VR on mothers day ( 4 weeks ago ) Of course the previous owner said it was in great shape and a great bike. I rode it home in the pouring rain (80 miles) weather men were wrong again. I found several things I wasn't happy with but I could fix them. Started with the lights and fix the bad ones then I found the rear break froze in the( will not let the tire move ) position. I thank you all for the past posts on brakes, a BIG help! Fighting with brakes and rebuilding the rear caliper was soooo much fun I dread ever doing it again but It's done now. I figured the battery was bad because of the hard starting issue, it was but also every item that GeorgeS stated in one post. I found an issue even with the starter and ended up cleaning it up and fixing the corrosion issue and now one turn of the starter and she is running. Also made new bigger cables for the starter circuit. Clean grounds and every terminal on the bike it seams. Horns didn't work, so now we have new air horns, very loud! Well finished up the brakes this morning around 7am and putting on all the stuff I took off around 8:30. Then as if on cue, I pulled the bike out of the garage and started it up, and the RAIN started, weather men wrong again. I finally got to take her the the gas station around 10 am, She rode great. Thank all of you for the Help...... Eddy G
  7. I was curious if anyone else has had this issue. Since I signed up on here, I started to get spam email under this address: eHarmonyPartner@venturertour.net Does VentureRider.org sell email addresses?
  8. Took my first ride Saturday and the bike started shutting off. Got caught at a light and it quit and had to do the tip toe walk to get it out of traffic. Got it started and as long as I kept it revved up, I could keep it running. Sunday, I took the battery tray out and cleaned the connections on the TCI and tightened the terminals. I also took the kill switch off and cleaned with contact cleaner. I also put my new diaphragms in and a new set of plugs. It still was acting up. When I got home today I took a good look at the electrical schematic. I pulled the windshield and headlight and found the emergency cut off switch, the 60º tilt switch, out of the rubber holder and hanging down. I took it apart and checked it inside and tightened the terminals and reinstalled it with a spacer to hold it tight. I started the bike and it sounded very good, very crisp and responsive. I put it back together and as I started down the driveway, it went dead. I got it started and made a loop around the block and at about 30mph in 3rd gear I let off the gas. The tach dropped to Zero and it was dead. I flipped the kill switch on and off and it backfired and it was running again. I got it back home and again took the kill switch off and checked it out. When checking voltage across the two wires, there is no voltage drop across the two wires. I really thought I had found the problem with the tilt switch hanging down, but obviously that was not the problem. I don't know anything about the TCI and when it is running, it runs very good, especially with the new diaphragms. I also pulled the pressure sensor hose loose and put a vacuum pump on it and it would rev up when vacuum was applied. I also blew cleaner through the #2 carb tube and it was open. I also checked the clutch lever and it is out all the way. Tomorrow I intend to start the check on the TCI, but for anyone that knows about these things, is it common for it to be intermittent and run so good when it is running? It is obvious I am loosing electrical power somewhere, but with it being intermittent, I am having a problem isolating the problem. I appreciate any suggestions. RandyA
  9. Eventually I will get all the bugs out of this thing. Was out for a ride after synching carbs and my tach started to bounce a little. About 30 miles later- everything went out- except the speedo. No tach, no computer, no voltage, no turn signals. The computer would start cycling through after a short time and the tach reappeared then the whole process started again. Now it's off more than it's on. Does the computer display board control everything? Should I be looking for a loose/dirty connector or could the board be bad? How hard is it to get to? My cruise went out as well. All lights come on when powered on, all turn off but power. Can't get set or resume light to come on or function. Thanks for all the advice. It's coming together. 86VR 22,000
  10. Finally tried starting around 6 PM and no spark. Did a little troubleshooting and found no ground to the ignition module. Something must have gotten lost in the translation, so I added a ground to he line, and it started, but running very rough. Checked coil wires on right side, and looked OK but in reality they were switched. It would have seemed that the long plug would have gone tlo the short coil line, and vice versa, but Noooooo!! Switched them and it fired right up and ran great!! Wife came home, so I started it for her, and it ran a few seconds and died!! No spark again! Sooo, to make a long story short, I have 2 spare modules, one for an '83 and one for later models. Well, the one for the newer models ran for a short time, then started missing like crazy. So, tried the one for the '83 and it ran fine for a short time then died. Put the other one back in, still missing. Tried the '83 once more, it started, and is still running. Not real confident in things as of yet. Supposedly mine, being an '84, uses the newer style, but it's "Born On" date is actually 11/83, so I'll have to pull the one in it to see the model code that is in there. I also have a module in the '85 but I'm suspecting that is what's wrong with the '85 in the first place. Bottom line, we're caging it up to Carl's tomorrow, and I will have to see how things are before I try to make it to MD next weekend. May cage it there but hopefully we are riding here. Just gotta gain some confidence first! That and put all the plastic back on and get an inspection...
  11. My 1999 RSV started missing the other day. I checked the plugs and I ran seafoam thru it. I checked the spark at the plugs. The fuel pump isn't clicking. It has been doing this ever since it started missing. Is there a fuse that goes to it and if so where is it located? Where is the relay to it and how do you check it? thanks tim
  12. My headlight is not working on my bike. When the headlight started to go out they would work every once in a while. The bulb is fine. Is there a fuse box or something else that might be causing the light not to work? This is a new bike for me. What is the easiest way to jumpstart the bike? The battery is run down and I need to get it started. How do I get to the battery?
  13. This past year has had it's share of challenges. First, my job slowed down so I started a new job Sep 1st, after 11 years with the same place. 2nd, my oldest child died on Sep. 22. 3rd, my mother died 12 days later. 4th, I got carpel tunnel in both hands. 5th, I got laid off about a month ago. 6st, the one that is my own fault and probably the stuppedest thing I could have done, after quiting smoking 13 years ago while going through treatment for lung cancer, I started smoking again a few weeks ago. I can't believe that after 13 years, the first sig was like going to heaven, it tasted great. All I can say is if you have quit, don't have just that one sig, you could be hooked again.
  14. I noticed today when I stopped to talk with a friend and started the bike back up it didn't spin the engine like it usually does. I then noticed that it wasn't charging like it usually does. When I left his house the bike immediately started charging the way it always does and did so all the way home till I went to put it in the garage, and then it started doing the same thing again, not charging the way it always did before. I just read the stator post and am wondering if it could be the connection that goes into the voltage regulator, or is this a symptom of the stator going out. I replaced one stator on a Suzuki Cavalcade, was not a fun job. Louie
  15. I don't leave my driveway without a helmet on my head. This evening I needed to make a quick run to Target so I got on the bike as usual, put the helmet on, started the engine and began to back out of the garage when something started banging on my head. I stopped immediately and thougth "what the He**". Apparently when I moved the bars I accidently hit the garage door opener on my key ring and the door came down on top of my head. It quickly reversed and no harm done. I started laughing so hard I could hardly ride thinking of what this must have looked like to the neighbors. I phoned my wife while on the way to Target and she got a good laugh from it as well. Always wear you helmet. You never know what perils lie ahead. DT
  16. Just started the bike, (1987 VR), for the first time this season and before I decided to put the new tires on, I took it for a ride. Wasn't running great and when I looked down, there was a fast drip of gas out of one of the overflow tubs. The back carb on the clutch side is overflowing and running gas out. Think it had started to cause trouble last fall already but not to the point that it is now. How hard is it to work on the one carb, can I just remove and repair the one or can it be repair on the bike? I run sea foam through my bike quite often so don't think that will help. What is the easyest way to try to fix this problem? Thanks John
  17. I need some help in tracking down a problem! In the past couple of days, I have had my 84 not willing to start. She seems to run OK but twice now when I go to start her, she won't turn over. It acts like the kill switch is off, but it isn't. The first time it happened I played with things (turning the kill switch off and on, kick stand up and down, turned the key off and on, etc) and she eventually fired up. The second time... same stuff, but no help....sooo being on a hill I jump started her, no problem at all. After both times, she started up later and runs ok. SO I am off tommorrow and have some time, where should I start looking? and how should I test (I have a low wrench IQ) Dave
  18. It was about 4:30 this morning when I went to get on my bike to come to work. It was about 35 degrees, when I started it up I noticed the tach was not working. This is a first, as I rode in the tach started responding very slowly. By the time I made the 20 mile ride the tach was acting better but still slow to react. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen, wondering if the cold had something to do with it. Any thoughts?

    D'OH!

The other day my speedo quit working while I was in Marshfield. I just figured it had froze up and snapped my cable again. But I thought it was kind of strange for that to happen when it wasn't making any noise before it quit. After I got home I started tearing the things apart to get at the speedo. when I got the cable off the speedo I noticed there was nothing inside. When I looked at the other end, it had come loose and fell off and the center slid out somewhere along the road. D'OH!
  20. I decided to take the bike to work tonight. Weird thing happened. The starter turned the engine over just fine but it would not fire. Choke in, choke out it didn't matter. Finally, I shut off the ignition then turned it back on and tried it. Now it started right up and has started just fine three more times. Should I be concerned? Perhaps, the ignition switch is going bad? The bike is fairly new (07) with only 9,000 miles.
  21. I have noticed over the last 3 to 5 years the fan belts seem to make noise after a short time frame. The last two or three that I have bought and installed, they started squeaking or making a little noise after several weeks to several months. If you spray them with say WD40, or let a bar of soap rub against the belt, they quiet right down and several days later you start to hear them agaim. Mostly when they are cold or just started. The surpentine belts is what I'm referring to. A few years back you only replaced a belt when it was cracked however the last couple I did it was for noise. I remember using belt dressings years ago but don't see that like you use to. Anybody else have this issue and what have you done? Thanks. Spotsy
  22. How much more of this partly cloudy we gonna get? 4 inches of snow last night and still snowing. Weather man says snow season is just getting started. Is it true they delayed spring by 30 days?
  23. Engine just quit. Was running fine and then just died. Pushed it for a bit and tried to start it again, it finally started. Runs OK for now, but looking for any thing to check before it does it again. Thanks
  24. My riding buddie (who happens to be computer illiterate) has a 1998 Tour Deluxe with right at 100,000 miles. This past summer while on short rides around our county roads his bike would without warning QUIT. This happened more than several times but only once required trailering home. The one time I was with him when it happened we had just left a restaurant (ice cream) and had traveled less than a mile and it died. Within 3 minutes and without any trouble shooting it started and ran beautiful the rest of the way home. All we did was let it sit with the key off for a couple minutes and it started and away we went. Because of this problem and at the recommendation of our 'factory' mechanic, the carbs were taken off and rebuilt. Sure made a heck of a difference in performance. I'm not sure if the tank was taken off and cleaned or not. I do believe the filter was changed. Unfortunately the dog-gone thing won't mis-behave while in the care of our local Yamaha shop. Any theories or similar circumstances happen to any of you ??
  25. I just finished a winter bike project and am very happy with the results. I have a 98 RSTD, had it a couple of years. The valve guides started leaking and puffing out smoke once in a while. I liked the bike but didn't like the smoke and I wanted a little more zip. I bought a 2004 RSV engine/trans, 2007 RSV carbs, bub full exhaust, Dyna 3000, K&N pods and some other goodies. I also bought a bike stand from Carbon One (which worked perfect) and started tearing it down Thanksgiving week. I searched for and studied everything I could find, especially the wisdom of venture riders. A special thanks to my brother Pete who listened to my challenge every day, for the knowledge given to my by Freebird and Pegscraper, and others who have posted tech help. I don't have any pictures yet, but am working on them. Thanks, Iceman
