  1. Can someone direct me to a 'How To' guide on the removal/installation of a speedo cable? I've removed the windshield and headlight assy. and can touch the connection point with one finger but can't for the life of me figure out how to route the cable and then attach it. Do I need to do more dis-assembly? On a related topic, I noticed that all the rubber holders for the relays behind the headlight have dry rotted and broken. Anyone have a suggestion for making repairs. Might not hurt anything the way they are, but I sure don't want 'em bangin' around in there...
  2. I don't know about everybody else, but I always make my own toolkit. The tools that come with the bike are usually pretty poor quality. Of course this only works if you've got bags of some kind because it will take up more space than is provided in the small tool kit storage on most bikes. Here's what I have in mine... 1/4 ratchet with 6 point metric sockets to size 12 + 3" & 6" extensions open/box combo wrenches from 4 to 17 8" crescent wrench pliers (needle nose & standard) metric allen wrench set screwdriver with handle storage for multiple bits (lg. & sm. phillips, lg. & sm. flat and select hex sizes) along with a flexible extension. air pressure gauge hand-held flashlight (LED) head-band flashlight (LED) tire plug repair kit electrical tape and a length of 16 gauge wire multi-function tool (you know the kind that has a knife, saw, pliers, can opener, etc.) It all fits into a small tool bag and I keep it tied down in the bottom of the off-side saddle bag. I also carry a small survival kit with a compass, signal mirror, binoculars, butane lighter, t.p., and water purification tablets. Ya just never know...
  3. Nope, you're absolutely correct. I misread the post. Still wanna find some housings that will fit my first gen & Mark I bike...
  4. Dang it! All the good stuff is for the Mark II's... I've been watching for some housings on fleabay without much success. They don't generally list them by their par value or even add that info in the description.
  5. I'd like to try these myself, but this site is only selling the lamp. What is everyone using for a housing? Was it something you had on hand? Or are you buying those elsewhere?
  6. Also known as shotgun trouble-shooting. Keep shooting and eventually you find the trouble...
  7. Hmmm, interesting concept. But, it doesn't look very aerodynamic.
  8. Has anyone ever tackled this job? Since the shock has less than 5K miles on it, I don't really want to replace the entire thing. But, considering the progressive spring mod if it's not horridly difficult.
  9. Never liked going out on the first day of season. Seems like they're too many people out there shooting at anything that moves!
  10. Awesome, I was planning on doing the progressive spring upgrade this winter. Sounds like I need to start with new forks and calipers. Hmm, I just installed the Super Brace (group buy) will that work on the MkII's?
  11. Does anyone know if the MkI and MkII rotors are compatible? I'd like to get some slotted ones off an '87 for sale on eBay mounted on my '83.
  12. Hey, we've already got the sand...just need some water!
  13. I have type O- blood which is often called the "Universal" type since every blood type can use it. I donate regularly. Because I ride...the life I save may be my own!
  14. I'm not sure what these are called (i.e. upper / lower / something else). I bought a pair and they attach to the lower fairing next to the vent louvers. Only available in smoke color. http://www.touringcycleaccessories.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1135
  15. Old Goat, you ain't the oldest old goat in these parts. I got ya beat by a few years and don't consider myself too old. If'n you do get that old bike up and runnin (and you will) and if'n you do ride it out to Az (and you will), you let me know and we'll share the road and a beer or two together. Count yourself lucky to have had good friends for that many years. True friendship is a precious commodity not easy to come by. Many people spend their entire life without even one friend. Right now, you're feelin' pretty low...but, it'll pass. You know it will. And you'll soldier on. 'Cuz that's what's right for your family and friends (here and elsewhere) and yourself.
  16. Speaking as a resident of the south (well, the southwest...), we're still waiting for the cold. Usually arrives in January. I went out for a ride yesterday in a Tshirt. High temp was in the mid-80's.
  17. I got a feeling you're gonna tell me that's not gonna work so well on my '83 MKI. As to the rain, we don't get much of that out here in AZ. And when we do, it pours buckets for about 15 minutes and quits. So, best to just get under something in a hurry.
  18. I'm researching for the best GPS nav system to add to my bike. I'm sure some of you have experiences (good and bad) that might help me with my decision. Obviously I want something that has a large readable screen. But, it also needs to be visible in an outdoor situation and not be prone to breakdown due to vibration. I'm not even sure what other criteria are important...you tell me!
  19. Yup, that's how tech support call centers started moving to India and other offshore locations. "Oh, they're just gonna take the overflow calls and work weekends so you employees won't have to work so hard and you'll always have weekends off." That was 8 years ago. Little by little, step by step, they've out sourced all the technical support and much of the software programming. Customers are frustrated by it, but so few vote with their wallets, the company makes the $wise decision.
  20. Yes, I've been that route myself (back in the 90's and never on a bike) but, it is some beautiful scenery specially once you cross over into Cali. Nice trips like that come along so infrequently, it's good to cherish them when they do.
  21. I went in early this morning expecting long lines...there were lots of poll workers but only a handful of voters. In-n-out:cool10:
  22. :sign yeah that::sign yeah that:
  23. +1
  24. Hmmm, looks like the tank is on backwards...
