Considering a 1983 venture with sidecar this week
coy55boy replied to Firebrick's topic in Watering Hole
I've got an '83 with about 5K miles. Not being a welder, where should I take it to get the work done? A bike shop or a welding shop? And what should I tell them so they can make effective repairs? -
I agree...it's a Road Glide. I also suspect SCAM! So many out there these days. Makes me wonder how many idiots there are that the scammers keep trying. They must be successful sometimes...

If you decide to ride in to Tucson, I'd be happy to meet up with you. It would be an interesting contrast. Your brand new 2011 with my 'new looking' 1983. There are some terrific scenic routes around here. Can't say much about Yuma...drove through there on I-8 a bunch but never really stopped for sight seeing.

Whatever happened to these mounts?

An old, blind cowboy wanders into an all-girl biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar stool and orders a shot of Jack Daniels. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the bartender, 'Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?' The bar immediately falls absolutely silent.... In a very deep, husky voice, the woman next to him says, 'Before you tell that joke, Cowboy, I think it is only fair, given that you are blind, that you should know five things: 1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat. 2. The bouncer is a blonde girl. 3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate. 4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter. 5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler. Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?' The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, 'No...not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times.'

Weepy Water Pump
coy55boy replied to coy55boy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for all the tips! Maybe I'm being overly cautious. I like to fix things BEFORE they leave me stranded! I saw the stains on the pump cover and panicked. I haven't seen any evidence of leakage on the garage floor. The coolant level is correct. The bike hasn't been running hot. And we haven't really had a temp change...it was 80 and sunny yesterday. I guess I'm just looking for an excuse to stop riding so much and do some wrenching instead. -
I put the bike up on the lift to do an oil change and noticed staining around and below the weep hole on the water pump. I've read a few threads that mention replacing the impeller with a metal one. Can someone point me to a supplier that carries the necessary parts?

Cold today (only 78F) brrrrrrr. But, I reckon I'll force myself since the sun is shining!

Being an old fart just means you are a successful long time survivor. When I was a youth, I thought old farts didn't know what they were talking about. Now I'm old enough to realize that I couldn't see clearly because my head was still up my ass. The funny thing is that now when I try to share the wisdom I've gained over the years with youngsters, they think I don't know what I'm talking about. The cycle continues...

28 degrees F and I am still commuting on my bike
coy55boy replied to KiteSquid's topic in Watering Hole
Yeah, I hear ya. I need to scout out some cold weather gear myself. It's only gonna get up to 80 this weekend... Now, where did I put those heated boots? -
Gee, I dunno...the lawn chair side car looks a little iffy. But, the balloon tire trike looks like it could be fun!

Another good source for pricing is Craigslist. You can do a search for all of Craigslist (instead of 1 city at a time) by doing a global search. Go to Google and type in 84 Harley (or whatever) followed by a space and then site:craigslist.org

Thanks for the heads up! I scampered down to HF and picked up a bike lift I've had my eye on. Regular price $199 on sale for $149 so I grabbed it for $112.50. Heck of a deal! Now, if I can just figure out how to use it without dumping the bike on the garage floor...

I ain't as young as I used to be...but, I still like to make sure I've got the right tire pressure. I ride a first gen. MKI and the way they are setup, it's difficult to use a tire pressure gauge. So, after fighting the bike a few times (the bike won), I decided to come up with a better mouse trap. It actually works pretty good, so I thought I'd share it. I took the manifold off an old discarded portable air tank to start with. It's basically a hexagonal metal pipe with several ports tapped into it. It had 4 - 1/8" NPT ports (only need 3) and a 3/8" which I capped. Add a hose with a self-locking chuck. Swap the original gauge (0-125 PSI) with a more accurate 0-60 PSI. I left the original safety (although it probably wouldn't trigger until after the gauge was gone). I set the regulator on my compressor to 60 PSI. Now I can just attach the chuck to the air valve on the wheel, add or release pressure as desired, and when finished remove the air chuck. I just have to remember to release pressure from the rig when I'm finished so as to not keep pressure on the gauge. http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/Misc/airpressurerig.jpg

Things To Do While Waiting For Coffee To Brew...

Don't matter...as long as you do #2 before #3! -
Congrats, Mike. Looking forward to the pics!

I've read tons of reviews and studies about oil filter brands and while they seldom agree 100%, there are 3 names that seem to pop to the top of the list most of the time. Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Purolator Pure 1. The filter brand that seems to get beat up the most is Fram. I use Purolator Pure 1 because it is a good quality filter at a reasonable price and readily available.
