  1. Thanks, Earl. I appreciate the offer and may take you up on it if the Ram mount I referenced doesn't work. I'd like to use the Ram if possible because it would be so easy to switch from cup holder to GPS to Ipod, etc. I also found another ball mount that I'm pretty sure will work on either side. It looks like you fabricated your holder out of a mirror stem. Hmm, looks like pretty good OOB thinking to me as well...I sure am glad I fell in with this crowd!
  2. Thanks, Mike. That actually led my thought process in a different direction and I found [ame=http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Mounting-RAM-B-179-AP5U-Motorcycle-Generation/dp/B00361ERVI/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1288561703&sr=1-2-fkmr1]Amazon.com: RAM Mounting Systems RAM-B-179-AP5U Offset Motorcycle Mount for Apple iPod Nano (3rd Generation): Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41y1yITOPCL.@@AMEPARAM@@41y1yITOPCL[/ame] on Amazon. I should be able to use the mirror mounting hole to add the offset base and have a stable platform. Just have to hope it's strong enough... http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n163/coy55boy/Misc/RamOffsetBase.jpg
  3. I'm getting really frustrated trying to add a cup holder on my '83 Royale. There just isn't any handlebar real estate sufficient to the task. I saw where someone had screwed one into the lower fairing, but I'm reluctant to go that route. Does anyone know of an alternate solution?
  4. Aw, ain't love grand? Congrats Tom!
  5. That's just the manufacturers way to help keep us all safely within the speed limitations imposed by our friendly government...
  6. Gotta add my .02 worth. I ran across a mention of dyna beads someplace and was very interested though somewhat skeptical. I mean, if the claims were true, why wasn't EVERYONE using them? They've been out long enough. But, I had never even heard of them. So, being a skeptic and a long time believer of "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is", I started searching the web for user reviews. I gotta say, I was pretty blown away by the number of people that swear by these little beads. That, plus it seemed that the only detractors were people that had never tried them. Now, I just got a new bike (well, new to me) that had recently gotten new tires. When I got the bike, there was a single 1 oz. stick on weight (HATE them thangs) on the rear wheel. But, the front tire really bugged me. It had a 1 oz. sticky weight on the right and another one on the left (but, it was barely hangin on) and it also had a 1 oz. clip on as well. It just seemed to me that somebody did a piss poor job of balancing that tire. So, I said "What the hell". I ordered some dyna beads and when they arrived, I happily removed all the ugly weights and installed the beads. Today was the first chance I had to test 'em out. I did both city and highway driving with speeds up 85 (indicated) and didn't have any problems. I'm no scientist nor a suspension expert, I'm just sayin' they worked for me. BONUS! Now I don't have to try and clean around them dang things anymore. Nice smooth rims...
  7. I admit that I've been out of the loop for a couple of decades. But, during the last couple of months since I've been back up on two wheels, I've noticed something I'd like to ask about. Most of the time when I meet another bike (or bikes) going the opposite direction on the highway, I get a one fingered gesture. No...not that one! It's like they point (forefinger) at the center divider. Like they wanna make sure I know where it is or something. My assumption is that it is an acknowledgment of some sort. Now, this may be a regional thing, but can anyone enlighten me?
  8. Backrest? Only if you like riding with your belly on the tank!

    UGH!

Oh, I dunno bout the south bein all that great. I grew up in Lousy anna. Very seldom got snow, but it was humid almost all the time. Then one summer I rode my Virago 750 west to see the Grand Canyon (and my Grandma). Three months later I moved out here and never regretted it for a minute. On average, we get 315 days of sunshine a year. Course, some of those days are hotter'n hell! But, winter typically lasts only about a month and a half and I hardly ever have to wear anything heavier than a fleece jacket. Then there's spring and fall and like everywhere, that's when everything is good with the world.
  10. I've been quit for almost 5 months now (short 4 days) and I'm using the same crutch. I've also tried to quit many times before, but this has been by far my best showing. Just hope we don't find out 5 years from now that e-cigs are worse than real cigs in some dreadful way...

    Carbon One?

Go to the 'Classifieds' section and look under 'Member Vendors'
  12. Squidley, you are right. My day job is a forum host for a major software manufacturer. So, I know whereof I speak. This forum has somehow stumbled onto that 'secret sauce' that social forums like this are always looking for but seldom find. I've been talking to my boss about this site. About how a newbie can jump in and ask newbie questions and be welcomed. And about the way you genuinely care for one another (you can deny it, but it's obvious to an outsider). Now, our community would look like a giant compared to this one, but we are always trying to improve. The one thing I wish I knew how to export though is the passion. You love to ride and you love your ride and you love to talk about your ride. So, when someone asks a question and you know the answer, you're not only willing to post...it's hard to get you to shut up!:duck:JK This community has a special fabric that holds it together. Part of that is your host who builds and modifies and asks opinions. Part of it is a site that's easy to navigate. But, Squidley is absolutely correct, the biggest and most important ingredient are you, the members. You should all be very proud to call this site your home. I just wish more of you lived out here in the wild, wild west. I can only pine away when you talk of meet and greets and group rides and mechanic days... OK, sermon over. Back to the fun and games!
  13. That's some guard dog! Nice pics.
  14. Hmmm, never thought of having a spare muffler set. Are there special occasions you put the straight pipes on for?
  15. Thanks, Gary! No lateral vibration issues?
  16. I got down there and eye-balled it close up and think I see what you're talking about. It looks like that will give me good vertical support. However, not much in the way of lateral support. Not sure how important the lateral support is... Although I suppose that if I use a thick enough piece of aluminum, that should be sufficient. Have you got dimensions of the bracket you manufactured? Or did you use the 'By Guess and By Golly' method?
  17. I bought a pair of MarkII ('87) passenger boards on eBay and trying to fit them on my '83. The 3 mounting holes line up OK. The problem is with the muffler attachment. There's a wide gap and a bit of an offset. Anyone know of a solution?
  18. What about a 1st Gen machine. Anything similar to this available?

    Ebay

    ROTFLMAO
  20. You know, it's not necessary to travel or go city by city on the Craigslist site. You can search the entire country with a single google search. Just type in your search term (i.e. Yamaha Venture, etc.) put a space behind the last term and then add site: craigslist.org. Yamaha Venture site: craiglist.org I use that all the time to get an idea of what something sells for if I can't find anything locally. Works great!
  21. Thanks, Yammer!
  22. Does anyone know if an 88 Venture seat will fit an 83? Mods required?
  23. Gonna be a tad uncomfortable for the passenger though...what with that hose pokin' 'em in the back and all.
