  1. Just my opinion: I have an HJC SyMax 2 modular helmet. I've had it for just over two years. It fits my head shape well and is light enough for me to wear for hours or all day without fatigue. I do ride with the chin bar up (yes, I know it's not recommended) and it forms a good sun visor that way. When I ride in rain or cold, I pull the chin bar down. The way I see it, a modular helmet is structurally the same as a 3/4 helmet but with the added benefit of the chin bar if it is used in the down and locked position. The only problem I have with the helmet, or any helmet that I have tried over the years is the reduction in peripheral vision. I have to turn my head to extreme degrees and even then there is still a significant vision blockage. I never ride without a helmet but have no problem with anyone whose opinion differs. I believe that any helmet will provide some protection. I believe that many people I see wear their helmets with the chin strap way too loose or disconnected altogether. In my opinion (again, just my opinion) that is much the same as not wearing the helmet at all, but that is their perogative of course.
  2. Just curious..... I switch between FireFox and Internet Explorer (most current version of each) on this computer and I also use Safari on my iPad2. Now and then I have to do the Username/Password to log in to the site. Here's the query: There are two log-in boxes, one on the left near the top and one on the upper right. When I use the one on the left, my information is not accepted and I am warned that I have use "X of 5 attempts". When I use the one in the upper right my information is accepted and I log in and stay logged in until I use the iPad2. Anyone else have similar problems and/or why one log-in box refuses the information while the other readily accepts it?
  3. My story: I was 16, I absolutely knew everything about everything! I had a Cushman motorscooter. The scooter had a headlight bulb out and I was not allowed to ride it after dark. I came home about an hour after dark, parked, opened the front door and started across the living room where mom and dad were watching TV. Dad spoke up telling me he had warned me not to be on the scooter until I got the head light bulb replaced. I never missed a step across the floor as I raised my right hand finger in the well known screw you salute. Opened the door to my bedroom, closed the bedroom door and started to take off my jacket. The bedroom door opened, I turned around and kabammm! I found myself on the floor between the bed and the wall. The door closed and I laid there a couple of minutes regrouping. Dad never said a thing about the incident, neither did I. We still hung out together, fishing and hunting a little bit as usual, no changes at all. The bottom line: I earned every single "whuppin'" I ever got. I worked for 'em, and by golly I never faulted my dad or my mom for any punishment they handed out. They're both gone now but they're still in my heart!
  4. For our 25th anniversary I set up a vow renewal package in Gatlinburg. Our wedding was a rush job (no not that kind of rush!). Now we're working toward our 50th. JFI: I was in the Navy in Jacksonville, FL. I had 72 hours to pick her up at the airport (she was coming from N Ireland), drive to Tennessee, get married, drive back to Jax, find a place to live and get moved in.
  5. I have the same unit on my Venture. Worth every penny on longer rides! There is no intrusion of the mounting bars for the passenger or the driver. The photo shows the mounting bars fit snug enough to hold my sheep skin seat cover in place all by itself. (photo taken about three months ago on a trip to Blythewood, SC)
  6. Hannah and I have been members of Chapter 424 in Cleveland, TN for about three years. We rode over to Greeneville, SC to a Meet and Greet there earlier this year. Met some friends from STAR Days in Chattanooga and from Columbia, SC (Cajun and Mike G). Nice folks and have enjoyed our membership.
  7. My Channel 10 (http://www.wbir.com) weather guessers are showing great weather up there for your weekend! Enjoy!
  8. I signed up for two years ($24). I accessed two "how-to" videos which allowed me to save $78 which my dealer charges for an hours work by doing it myself. So...when I take the $24 from the $78 dollars I actually only saved $54. That means that I can sign up for another 4 years of VR and still have $6 left over. I'm retired Navy and every penny helps Also $1 a month just see other bikes, get ideas, chat with new friends etc etc. I think it's a very worthwhile $12
  9. Don't know the answer but a year or so ago I need to replace one of the saddlebag bar reflectors. The split down the middle black plastic with a red reflector on the flat side. I don't recall for sure but it was either $68 or $78 just for one reflector. JFI: I went to Walmart and bought just the red reflector, 2 in a pack, for about $3. It is still there. Also JFI: Harley Davidson sells simple reflectors that stick on the saddlebag bars for about $4.99 each. I bought 4 to put on the rear of my saddlebag bars and they also are still there.
  10. Both are very nice devices. I chose iPad2 (32GB) because it has far and away more apps/software available and there were a couple that I very specifically wanted. I did not get the 3G version. WiFi is all I wanted or needed. It is a replacement for a netbook for bike touring. Gonna get it's first "tour trial" this weekend down the Natchez Trace.
  11. Okay Whoa hold on!! This is a respected Hannigan conversion shop I mentioned previously. What I said was he suggested (SUGGESTED) those things. I believe both points are valid. An extra fuel tank would be handy, but only if I actually wanted to stay in the saddle for the extra miles that the tank would provide. Frankly I would not be doing 200-250 miles at a sitting before a rest/fuel stop. As for the floor boards, I've seen them, I like them and I would like to have them. Scratches would not be a problem for me. I ride my bike, I don't just polish and show it. But the floor boards would, as I have seen, be a problem for paddle walking the bike if I need to do that. Hannigan does not have a reverse option for the Venture at this time. I test rode a trike this morning (Harley 2010). He gets 41mpg, it has reverse, he has over 14K on the front tire and it still looks brand new. I did not like the shake and vibrate but it seemed to smooth out underway. It has a solid rear axle. I believe the Hannigan would ride better with it's independent rear system. I am likely to go with the Hannigan conversion on my Venture over a new Harley trike. I appreciate all the replies and information and I hope I have not offended anyone with this reply.
  12. I bought the Nelson Rigg 1/2 cover after seeing it on BMW dresser. Packs small, quick & easy to put on my Venture. I have three flag poles on the trunk rack that I just fold down and the 1/2 cover does not require folding the CB or AM/FM antennas.
  13. Getting closer to the decision point (Sorry George) on the trike. I just talked with the local installer shop and got this information: 1. He suggested I NOT get the added fuel tank. Reason being the fuel must be used regularly or else it (ethanol!!) will contaminate the rest of the fuel if left in the add-on tank too long and then pumped forward. .....That makes sense to me and saves a chunk of $$ 2. He suggested that I might reconsider the foot fairings, but only because they are so easily scratched if you're not careful when you mount/dismount. .....That also makes sense and saves a chunk of $$ The installer/dealer said my mileage would probably drop from my current 45-46mpg to about 40-42. From what I've researched that sounds rather optimistic. I then called my Yamaha dealer to inquire how this would affect my warranty. It will!! Anything else I should know about from the RSV Hannigan owners/riders?
  14. From Murfreesboro, TN: Murfreesboro, to Woodbury, to Sparta, to Crossville, Hwy 70 to 321 at Lenoir City and then on thru Maryville, Walland and Townsend to the Great Smoky Mountains then east across to Cherokee, NC and up the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way north. p.s. Hwy 70 in Rockwood, TN is where my driveway connects.
  15. May I also add this photographer who does photos along Blood Mountain on US129. http://squidfoto.com/ This photo is me on Blood Mountain.
  16. Are you asking for a specific brand of brake pads?
  17. The one about looking at your watch three times and then still not knowing what time it is.....The next time you notice someone look at their watch, wait 5 seconds, ask them what time it is. I don't think I've ever done that without them rechecking their watch yet again!
  18. My wife is on her second pair of Audibel digital aids. VERY expensive for the hidden inside the ear digital units. Approx $4500 for both units! They work very well for her. Batteries last for 3-4 days and the aids make a small noise when die. They require period cleaning about every 3-6 months that includes checks and perhaps an adjustment. If you use a cell phone be sure that the phone is certified for hearing aids. We use Consumer Cellular phones, good service, inexpensive, no contracts and most of the phones work well with her aids. Her aids also work well with our Scala Cardo bluetooth intercom system. Small point that is of no consequence but kinda funny: My hearing is excellent and on a couple of occasions I have vainly searched for a cricket in the house. It seems that Hannah sometimes puts her aids into one of those little "7 day" pill box things. When they are placed in a tiny little space with hard sides they make this little teeny chirping sound. I musta spent 15 minutes trying to find a cricket in/on/under/behind/on top of our china cabinet day before yesterday. Finally she remembered and dumped them out on the dining room table to hush them up.
  19. This old chief says SEMPER FI!! Have a super get together!!
  20. I live in Rockwood, TN and ride in/thru/around Oak Ridge frequently! I have a 2009 RSV. Coulda been me
  21. Minivan?? oops, thought it was all on bike. A minivan would (for me) require maximum interstates for speed.
  22. Just my two cents worth..... I like hwy 70 through Tennessee. Nashville, Lebanon, Carthage, Cookeville, Monteray, Crossville, Rockwood (where I live), Kingston to hwy 321 at Lenoir City. Follow 321 through Maryville, Walland, Townsend. At Townsend you can turn left and stay on 321 through Wears Valley (really nice ride) or continue on into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Gatlinburg (even better ride) or go across the mountains to Cherokee, NC (Harrahs Casino) or a short ride on to the Wheels Through Time museum at Maggie Valley, NC. Up around the Maryville area you will be fairly close to the Tail of the Dragon also. I'm rather fond of our great motorcycling roads here in the Tennessee/Georgia/North Carolina area!
  23. I don't think think I can help with the planning/arranging but you might get some info from this website. I'm a member of the alumni association and I did two tours in Londonderry (met the wife there). You might also email and ask for information from the members on the website also. We hold a mini-reunion every 2nd year and a full reunion in Londonderry on the alternate years. http://navcommsta-londonderry.freeservers.com/index.html

  25. I'll have to respond this way....."Whoa, not even when I was young on those Brit bikes and considered myself more or less immortal"!!
