  1. Haha, I had the same thought... Sounds like a good time though!
  2. I've only been riding for about 10 years but I've had 2 bird hits already. One was a few years back, I was on my GS750 - thank gd I was only doing 30-35 mph. I took a small bird right in the chest. It nearly knocked me off the bike and it sure as hell knocked the wind out of me. Second one was a few weeks ago right after I put a practically new windshield on. Fortunately it hit the shield and not me. I would die a happy man if I never experienced that again.
  3. I am sorry to hear about your friend. My prayers go out to his family and friends...
  4. Nice looking bike http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-Royal-Star-Royal-Star-Venture-1987-Yamaha-Venture-Royal-Touring-Bike-S-W-E-E-T-NR_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem45ee1025ccQQitemZ300346779084QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles
  5. I have the same concerns about E3s and Venoms... I've put almost 9,000 miles on my avons since may and have ridden through some real nasty rain. Only once have I felt a little slippage - but it was during a lane change not long after it started raining (so I suspect I got into some road grime/oil). I feel I should add that when I ride in the rain I am EXTREEMLY conservative in my lean angle. I put many many miles on the Elete 2s that I had on my wing and I loved the way those handled in rain/snow/trails (yes the trails) so far my confidence is growing in the tred pattern of the venoms/E3s. I cannot comment on mileage on the Venoms I have as have not replaced a set due to wear yet. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed if you go with either E3s or the Venoms.
  6. +1 to this. Note these are NOT the HH sintered ones. About the same price at my local stealer too, so I get mine there.
  7. I sure miss living and riding up in the U.P. ... At least for the months of June, July, August and September... Plenty of good riding and lots of nice trials. Glad ya'll had a great trip!
  8. Hmm... I made that trip along time ago and am not sure I ever made it back...
  9. Hey hey, that is pretty sweet! Thanks for sharing
  10. +1 to that... I was almost taken out today by one...
  11. I don't know if anyone else saw this or not but this ought to stress the importance of safe riding in a group (ie staggering) and maintaining a proper following distance... I think its amazing that more were not critically injured! http://www.komonews.com/news/local/59860797.html Hope they all come out okay.
  12. A few days ago I put on the organic pads which reduced the noise from the front by at least 75% but there was still a little. As per other suggestions I went out and picked up some brake grease (syl-gel) and put it on the backs of all of the brake pads. I rode a few hundred miles today and listened very carefully. Not once did they even hint at squealing. Hopefully it'll stay that way for a while.
  13. I rode in to work then left the office a little early to do some work on the observatory that I help run... Getting it ready to have a few astronomy labs out there this semester. Then what is usually a 10 mile ride home from the observatory took me about 1.5 hours... I took the sort-of scenic route It certainly was not a day of fishing...
  14. It has been too long. Corn Bread and chili for me tonight
  15. Just remember the job isn't done right unless you have extra pieces in the end! Looks great!
  16. Ah, the problems of being good and efficient at what you do! Don't say this too loud...
  17. +1 To this except from a different prospective... A few weeks ago I was able to treat my parents to a mini-vacation (neither have had time off in the last 6 years). I rode up to Michigan on my Venture and we (them on my Wing) spent 2 days riding about 800 miles (my dad and I ended up putting on around 1000 total riding together for the few days I was there...). And That is the first time I had ridden with both of them. Long ago I did many 'quick' rides (max of 200 miles) puttering around with my dad and a few with my mom but this was different. This ride was extra special to me for many reasons and it meant a lot to me to be able to do this with them. Point being, I'm sure your son enjoyed himself and feels the same way!
  18. I presume that is on his enduro... If I take it easy I can get high 50's on my GS750.
  19. Not at all. After your warning I was extremely careful in pulling the clamps off then shot a little lube (white lithium grease - to not damage the rubber) and a touch of compressed air between the hoses and the brass deal then eased them right off. After I got them off, I checked to make sure the brass was not loose at all and it seemed okay. I was thinking about picking up two caps to replace the ones that are on there because one has that 'old dried rubber' look to it, but it wasn't brittle at all (just as a precautionary measure).
  20. If the dealer is unable to produce your parts and in the event that he files Chapter 7 Bankruptcy (which basically relieves him of any debts owed but screws himself over pretty good) and you suit is settled as a wash you ought to be able to file an insurance claim for your parts. Either under your bike or homeowners policy (you'll have to talk to your agent or consult your policy). For me, I know that I could file it under either but wouldn't hesitate to file it under the bike policy for ease. You will then be out your deductable but that is all. You may want to consider talking to your insurance agent before you saddle up with a lawyer as the insurance company may be willing to go ahead and sue for recovery of your stuff (so they don't have to be out the money for parts) but you never know. I too greatly admire your patience with this shop! Again good luck!
  21. I didn't even pay that much for my 2nd gen... Including TTL and going to pick it up with an overnight in a hotel. I suppose if he leaves it up for long enough that eventually some sucker might come and give him near what he is asking...
  22. I picked mine up at a truck trailer supply store for about 20 if memory serves me correctly... Although I do not have the turn signal functionality, when I get some time I think I'll wire that up; it is a great idea!
  23. Very nice! Enjoy!
  24. First of all ya'll aren't kidding about it being a straight forward process. It certainly helped that Brian pointed out the vacuum ports and adjustment screws (the screws of which would have tough to spot without knowing right where to look). Next, my #1 and #2 were within 2 mmHG of each other, which was acceptable (but I adjusted it anyways). #3 and #4 were off by about 6mmHG of each other. And #3 and #4 were significantly higher than #1 and #2. I apparently deleted my before picture but here is my after. I thought this bike had smooth acceleration before (there were a few rough spots, but it was much smoother than the V-twin I was on before). I took it for a spin after syncing them up and I am amazed at the difference. Maybe I am imagining things but not only does it seem smoother (which I am positive it has improved tremendously), around mid rev range it seems to have a little more umph than it did before (this may or may not be true but regardless I'm happy). Thanks again Brian (PM sent regarding returning your CarbTune)! - Rick M.
  25. Hehe, yea - I got 4600 miles of uninterrupted enjoyable trip...
