Bad start switch
dingy replied to venture83_98's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Attached below is a picture that wasn't in the write up I did. It shows the contacts after being cleaned. There are no bumps on them. Bad starter solenoid is my guess. Internal contacts burnt. Do you hear or feel the starter solenoid engaging? The relay you hear picking & dropping with kill switch is side stand relay. Gary -
I am wrong, but I was right, HUH ?? Below are the correct numbers & they are different from 83 to 86, and I was wrong referring to them as outer tubes. They are Inner tubes. 83 - 26H-23110-00-00 86 - 3JJ-23110-00-00 Gary

Think I came home on 3 cylinders.
dingy replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Draining the carbs is not a waste of time, but if it is to the point of running on 3 cylinders and it's carb related, whatever is causing it is probably past the draining point. The VMax guys do a process they call 'Shotgun' to the carbs to clean them out while still on the bike. Below is a link to the procedure. http://vmax.lvlhead.com/tips/shotgun.htm Gary -
My brother had over a hundred stitches from doing this when it didn't work one time. Don't know if he did it anymore after that. Gary

They do have different p/n's 83 - 26H-23126-00-00 86 - 3JJ-23110-00-00 If you were to replace them both, there would be no problem. There is a valve at the bottom of the inner tube that may have had some internal change to warrant the new P/N. The O.D. is the same. Gary

Cassett deck elimination.....?
dingy replied to fixit3546's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not sure if this is what you need, but here is something. Gary -
One way to get some insight into 3 or 4 cylinders is to take off in 1st, hard acceleration, wide open and at 7500 RPM the bike should still feel like it is pulling hard if it is hitting on all 4. If it has somewhat of a noticeable decline in the acceleration rate as you near the top end of the RPM's, say above 6,500 RPM's, if probably hitting on 3. When you hit 7,500 shift it hard and fast into 2, same in third. You will probably be around 47-49 MPH at 1-2 shift, 72 at 2-3 and about 95 at 3-4 shift. I don't care what any of my esteemed colleagues here may say, be they from WV or NE, you are not going to peg the speedo in 3rd gear on these bikes. You will be picking valves out off your nether regions, because 115 MPH in a stock Venture in 3rd would take about 9500 RPM's, not gonna happen. The VMax equipped bikes have a chance of this, but then not if there is a VMax rear in that bike. Mine is screaming at about 103 MPH at 9500 RPM's at the 3-4 shift. There are multiple circuits in the carbs that overlap at different velocity rates of air through the carbs. So a bike that is only idling on 3 cyl. may pull good at higher RPM's and run on 4 cyl. One of the members, think it was Snaggletooth got a rebuild kit on Ebay and found the brushes were junk. I think it was 93 the VMax's went to a 4 brush, but memory is hazy on that one. Attached is a picture that shows way to tell a 2 from a 4 brush STOCK starter externally. The 2 brush starters have 4 screws around the mid-line of the main housing that hold coils in place. 4 brush units don't have these screws. Top starter is 2 brush, bottom case is 4 brush unit. Gary

I think it takes a moderator intervention. Freebird, Squidly, GooseV7, Black Owl, Buddy Rich are a few. Gary

Below is a thread on fixing the 2 brush unit. It has a special, built in Yamaha design flaw this corrects. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46890 Won't fix a totally worn out starter, but most aren't. Gary

The one you now have will hook right up to your VMax. Adapter cable is identical between the two bikes. The TCI programming is somewhat 'hotter' for what I sent with the VMax units. The IGN file is on the CD that I sent along for the VMax. Its in the IGN files/4 pick up coils directory What is programmed in TCI now will run the Max, just not to its full potential, for one, rev limiter is set lower than Max would like, timing curve is not advanced as far. It's a way of smoothing the pulsing out that is induced on the vacuum line due to the piston cycling up and down. By tying all 4 cylinders together using a 5 port Dorman adapter, the pulses in effect somewhat cancel each other out. Then with the small storage container, they are further smoothed. The chamber is a couple of pvc caps and a very short piece of 1 1/2" pvc, just long enough to join caps. I took a vacuum tee and cut it down, then used JB weld to attach the vacuum nipples to one drilled cap. One vacuum hose runs from each port on the intake manifolds to the Dorman adapter & the 5th port then goes to the vacuum chamber, then to the MAP sensor. I haven't had the 5 hose connection on this summer for the limited amount of riding I have done. It was part of my experimentation with the TCI. I will probably put it back in at some point. I have had the vacuum chamber in. It is not necessary at all. The stock TCI was subject to identical pulsing and never had this. It's just one of those hidden anomalies that become apparent when you are able to see what some of the data is with this TCI. Gary

Fork Dampers
dingy replied to Harmonicashawn's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I disected several sets of forks, cutting lower fork tubes in half and one inner tube. From this I made some CAD models of the entire fork assemblies in order to understand the anti dive system. From what I think I understand, the AD's are only effective the last 3/4" of compressed fork travel. If you have progressive springs in, get rid of the AD's, they are a large current eater, when in traffic. Skydoc 17 sells a set of block off plates to eliminate them completly. Gary- 1 reply

Fuel pump question
dingy replied to lwinders's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
By running the wire directly to the pump, a safety circuit was bypassed. The fuel pump relay has circuitry in it that detects if there is no ignition signal to the #2 coil. If system is powered up, and no signal for about 4 seconds, the pump power is cut off. Reason for this is in case of an accident and a fuel line rupture, the pump does not keep pushing fuel out that could ignite. Fuel pump relay has the same base connection as a normal relay, but they should not be interchanged. Fuel pump relay as all black plastic on outside and about a half inch longer than the standard Omron (mfg) metal relays. Couple of internal pictures attached, all the circuitry seen is for this safety cutout. About 5 resistors, 2 transistors 2 capacitors and a diode. Picture is from a 1st gen relay. There is one other 'Special' relay in bike & that is the side stand relay, it has a blue base & can not be interchanged with other relays. It has Normally Closed contacts, where all the others are Normally Open contacts. Gary -
whats the best engine oil to use
dingy replied to mike042's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
We really need a couple of sticky threads, for 'This is the oil to use (or not)' And 'This is the tire to use (or not)'. Gary -
Well that settles that, Now I know your not an IT person. Nothing gets fixed that fast with the Ivory Tower boys. Thank You, Gary
