I keep mine in my saddle bag, with hit and miss results. If they send me a violation, I can point out that I have a EZ TAG (our version). But to increase my odds, I ride the paint between lanes whenever possible. Dave

I recently saw an interview with Rush drummer Neil Peart, who is an avid motorcyclist. I think it was in the AMA magazine. One thing that stuck with me was his lane positioning. If he is riding on a two-lane (one lane each direction) highway as an independent vehicle (not following or being followed), he will ride in the right track with approaching traffic. His idea is that it allows approaching cars in platoon to see him earlier. That let's cars know that there is an on-coming vehicle and that it is not safe to pass. Since adopting this strategy myself, I have seen on-coming cars drift out and look, see me, and drift back. On the other hand, deer can be a danger on our rural roads. I stay in the left track unless there is oncoming traffic, because I want to give myself as much time and distance away from potential threats grazing along the road. I carefully choose my tracks to increase my visibility and my reaction time. Good thread. Dave

That will be wonderful, thanks! Dave -
93 octane required?
Dave77459 replied to YoungBlood's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I read this post a while back, and after doing some digging, I believe it. All that said, I get better mileage when I am outside of town. My city (Houston) is considered EPA-Non-Compliant for clean air, so they force us to use additives that sap energy in our fuel. When I travel, I often find I get better mpg, sometimes remarkably so. I always run the lowest octane because my bike was built for it, and I like to keep money in my wallet. But I do find my fuel economy varies, even so. Dave -
I suspect he means this one, since it has the same name as the subject of this thread. http://www.diamondraccessories.com/prodimages/newlightbar8.jpg

HID headlight installed

Have you installed on an RSTD yet? Figuring where to put the ballast or ignitor or whatever is giving me pause. Dave -
Great photos. Those cabins look fantastic. Dave

Thanks Tom!

My girlfriend is Roxie. Renne made me a handsome fluid cover with her name on it. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4545191029_307641b39f.jpg

I'm glad they are OK. I'd heard from Ponch about the accident. Scary stuff! Thanks for the pics. Where is that giant deer statue? Dave

Y'all really ought to try hitting the rev limiter a few times. It doesn't get scary until 2nd. LOL There is a sweet spot at those upper RPMs that just seems like a power boost. I hit my rev limiter almost every time I go out. Yesterday I found myself riding two up and stopped at a red light with a Road King two lanes over. Those Screamin' Eagle pipes of his were pretty, too. He was riding solo and blipped his throttle and looked at me. Light turns green and off he goes. He shot a good 10' in front of me, but I just had the throttle pegged until I hit the rev limiter. I shifted and kept at it until I hit the rev limiter again. He was pretty funny, ducking beneath his windscreen to be as fast as possible, but I was still walking away. But that's when my real rev limiter came on. She was screaming over the intercom and pounding my back. I shifted to third, fourth, and O/D right away and just let him run away. I reckon he needed some pride after getting beat by a Tour Deluxe riding two up. Dave

I bought my wife "shin chaps" at a rally, then she bought me a pair for Christmas. They work great for me in our southern climate. The raised part at the knee blocks the wind mostly from my thighs. The only time I missed the upper leather was when I rode with temperatures in the lower 30s. I *love* how convenient they are. Quick on and off, and extremely comfortable. They pack very easily in the saddlebags, with room to spare. My full chaps are awkward, uncomfortable, and fill the saddlebag when off. And I feel like a poser motorcycle cowboy. Ugh. I'll wear them again when I get a set of spurs. My $0.02. Dave http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2530/4222287296_c7ba8003a5.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2621/4064428339_bd6c82cb4c.jpg

Ok all you rstd folks
Dave77459 replied to starkruzen's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Nice looking bike! I see you have a tool bag on the forks, and that it is dented as if the fender bangs it. Is reduced fork travel a problem for you? No idea about the shim tool, sorry. Dave -
Beautiful! Thanks for inspiring us! Re: the photos, I'm able to upload as many photos as there are lines. 10? Sounds right. I hit the upload button, and then can add 10 more. Upload, and then more and more. Until folk are sick of it. All in one post. When I am done adding photos, I close the popup dialog. Not true for you? Dave

Regular maintenance?
Dave77459 replied to homer's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Culpa mea. Glad I posted the pages so you could check. I see also that the fuel filter doesn't need replacement until 30K miles. I'll go edit my reply. If you aren't sure that the oil and filter hasn't been changed in the last 6 months, it's time. Ditto with the fuel filter at 30 months. When I got my RSTD, it was at least 24 months old and had only 2000 miles on the ODO. I didn't know what service had been performed, so there was a lot of catching up to do. Dave- 11 replies

2008 Venture performance
Dave77459 replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have cruised at 80+ mph without any problem, except that my cruise control won't hold faster than 78mph. There's too much error on the speedo. 78 is plenty fast for me, except in West Texas where the speed limit is 80. Dave -
Regular maintenance?
Dave77459 replied to homer's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Nice! I too have a 2006 RSTD, midnight. You'll find lots of help here. I also bought the service manual off eBay, but I think one is available here. Much more useful than the owner's manual. I am attaching pages 3 and 4 of the service manual section 3, which outlines the schedule of services. 4000 miles is a regular service interval, and there is a lot to do. All this should also be done every 6 months. Check the spark plugs Check the crankcase ventilation system Check the fuel line Check the exhaust system Check carburetor synchronization Check the idle speed Check the air filter Check the cooling system Check the brake system Check the brake fluid Check the clutch Check the control cable Check the brake / clutch lever pivot shaft Check the brake pedal and shift pedal shaft Check the sidestand pivot Check the sidestand switch Check the front fork Check the steering bearings Check the wheel bearings Since you don't know much about the bike, you might want to buddy up with someone experienced in your area. I went to the dealer the first few times, to make sure the maintenance was caught up. IMO, sitting around is worse for a bike than riding a lot. If you don't know that it was ridden recently, you might think about that. Welcome aboard! Dave- 11 replies

I got mine too! It's beautiful! Unfortunately, my wife was the one who collected the post and brought it to me. She did not believe that this was a piece of safety equipment. She called it "jewelry for your girlfriend". I am shocked. SHOCKED! Thanks for the great work Renne! Dave http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2154/4545824510_cd2bd0b6a5.jpg

Helemt lock options
Dave77459 replied to DAKn2's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I haven't done it yet, but I was thinking about one of those helmet lock pins that go on the clutch or brake levers. That's an option, but I've never seen an owner around one to talk about whether they like it. Dave http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/images/image_21048.jpg -
Motion Pro SyncPro - either I or it ain't right
Dave77459 replied to GigaWhiskey's topic in General Tech Talk
I worked with MotionPro last year. They sent me a "fixit kit" that let me actually use it once. In this thread, I say how I went to V7Goose's and how he hooked it up to a vacuum pump. It performed so poorly that I've given up on it. When you work with a company to get a tool to perform it's best, and it is still bad, it's time to pitch it. I'm getting a set with dials. Dave -
HID headlight installed

Way to think outside of the box now have me thinking about spending more $$$ At our MD here a few weeks back, I saw Massey130 had modulators on his passing lamps. I think it was he. VERY distinctive and effective. I think he had a 3-way switch, on / off / modulating, but no light sensor to turn it off. If you really want HID and modulating lamps, you could hardly do worse than this. I was interested to see these BikeVis LED lamps with PodMod reviewed. They don't modulate, but they "twinkle" in an attention-grabbing way. Video below. I think it is really distinctive and would be a good enhancement for the modulator groupies. Thanks for the interesting blow-by-blow description. As I contemplate putting this on my RSTD, I have a couple questions.... I don't have a fancy fairing to hide the ballast and igniter. My headlamp bucket is pretty cramped already, so I reckon that I'd have to put it under the tank or in that area. Is there enough slack wire between the ballast or igniter and the bulb to accommodate the forks turn lock to lock? I guess I've not paid attention to computer problems. Is this an issue also with 2nd Gens? Dave

Thanks guys! Did you try the file, and did it work? I'm riding to lunch, but when I get home, I'll work on other states if it did work. Dave

somewhat dissapointed w/ Garmin
Dave77459 replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I create my files in GPX format using the MapSource program. Then I put them into a folder, called C:\GARMIN\POI. When I run POILoader, I tell it the folder where the .GPX files live, and it asks me whether I want to load each file individually. I would say that you need to know what folder your .CSV file is in. I'd move it into an isolated folder so it doesn't ask you about each file. Then you can tell POILoader where that folder is. I have never used .CSV files, but if Garmin says they will work, they will. Dave -
I'll generate state maps if someone can tell me that they work for them. I have decent tools that makes generating them simple, if tedious. I just want to know that I'm not wasting my time and giving false hope. I'll attach the TX map, that I made for my own use. BTW, I use the POILoader program from Garmin to store them as findable points of interest in my GPSr. Dave
