All good points. I'll just mention that my RSTD just passed 40,000 miles in two years of ownership. It is a fully capable touring bike. Things I wish it had that the RSV has: better range -- I am seriously worrying about gas at 150 miles. the trunk -- it'd be nice to have an easy place to stick my helmet the CB -- it'd be nice to be able to join in the fun when on VR group rides the queen seat -- sometimes. My wife is perfectly happy with the RSTD seat, but when she falls asleep, I'd like her to not fall off. It also makes a great location for an auxiliary fuel tank. It'd be nice to make it 500 miles without stopping. the intercom -- although I've got bluetooth helmets that talk just fine Things I don't miss about the RSV the cassette player the speakers -- my helmet bluetooth's sound is just fine, thank you. I find blaring speakers to be obnoxious, as well. Things that I prefer about the RSTD The removable windshield -- I stay dry all the time, and the windshield gives me loads of protection. Then I can take it off for a different look and feel. But that giant windscreen is also a chief culprit on my poor gas mileage. (That and my lead wrist) The removable backseat and luggage rack -- I usually leave it on, so as to fly the flag. When I solo tour, I use my luggage on the passenger seat for a backrest. When I tour two-up, the luggage goes on the rack and gives plenty of capacity for a long weekend. But sometimes I like to ride sans pax seat. The headlight bucket -- I like the headlight look on the RSTD, and the fairing does nothing for me. Some of my upcoming projects involve wiring up front, and the fairing complicates things. To be fair, I am considering the HID headlight, and the fairing would be a convenient place to hide stuff. The RSTD exhaust -- although, I am running Road Kings now. I will switch to the stock pipes for my upcoming longer trips. Maybe I'll do that today. Hmmmmm. The pillion seat -- my wife likes the seat, with the ample room and freedom of movement. But, she hasn't rode on the RSV seat. Maybe she'd like that? The look -- I prefer the overall cruiser look to the full tourer look. I think it is cleaner. It's faster -- just sayin'. The 1300 V4 is a great platform. It works well for both bikes. I simply prefer the look of the RSTD, and don't miss the added features of the RSV. Good luck in your choice!

Doesn't seem so, but it does include a shrimp cocktail. I am sure Lonna could take that and make a cheesecake. I've been there, and the chair they seat you in is a raised throne. You are on display as you attempt to finish this. The record for eating it is 8 minutes 52 seconds. Dave

You must sit at a table that we assign. If you do not win the steak challenge, you are welcome to take the leftovers with you. The trip home was a non-event, just like I like 'em! Thanks so much for all your help! I noticed on the way home that I could read signs behind me... the taillights seem pretty bright. Even so, my next project is more lights, or perhaps this strobe. What tag do you recommend? I haven't used tags so I am more clueless about them than other things. As far as capacity, it can carry a lot. My wife was amazed. Among other stuff, I carried a tent, an air mattress, a full Coleman tailgate cooker (the kind with legs), and two barely folding chairs that I used for sitting on soccer sidelines. I just replaced the grease. The bearings seemed OK, just cheap. They ran cool before I changed the grease, and I am hopeful that they will stay that way. Squidley may have an idea of what a replacement would be; he's knowledgeable and laid hands on them. Dave

Hi Greg, Welcome. A 2006 RSTD is the best on the forum, especially if it is black! Well done! Sorry I can't offer help, but can I ask that you post how it was fixed? One of the strengths of this site is that people post the solutions to their problems. I wonder if you could have put a gas line on the output of the fuel valve, with a gas can higher than the tank. Maybe then you could have filled the gas tank from the outflow side? Is the fuel valve one way? Dave

I headed over to Squidley's last night to repack the bearings using good grease. I bought some Kendall High Temp L-427 EP Grease (Kendall Blue) and that's what we used. We found what we expected, cheap grease and cheap bearings. We also found a weld spot/bump on the bottom of the axle, where the bearings would roll (we think). It could have shortened the life of any bearings there, cheap or expensive. If you have the HF Tag-Along, you might want to check. Thank you to Brad for being so available and helpful. I have Friday off and was considering a LD ride. I went to my favorite weather site, The Weather Underground (Wunderground) and was preparing to check the major cities along the way. I just happened to see their new Road Trip Planner, and clicked the link. It is just what I was looking for. It shows me the weather along my route: sunny at both ends and possible t-showers in between. I'll keep an eye on the route, but meanwhile I can start planning something else. I love Wunderground. The most interesting thing here is that MySpace still exists. I don't know anyone who uses it. I take that back; I've seen bands advertising that they have a link there, but just assumed they were too cheap or lazy to update their bizcards. After about the millionth suspected malware download from MySpace, I blocked it at the router and my kids moved to FB. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

No comment. BTW, in case anyone wants to see a full sized cooler on that rack, here it is. I don't think I will do that again. Not only is it heavy, but the cooler echoes the exhaust sound back. Based on an idea from Squidley, I made a cooler rack. I used a BBQ Grill from Academy, and some straps+bolts from a hardware store. Squidley suggested square bottom U-bolts, but I couldn't source the right size. My solution seems to work great! Installing a Powerlet outlet

I made the Powerlet to USB adapter tonight. It was super easy, but a bit different than the instructions I found. The right angle Powerlet plug that I used was a bit different than the design used, but only modestly so. The resulting adapter easily reaches the saddle bag (a distance of 3" LOL), but could also reach the handle bars to power my GPS if the batteries die. I'm looking forward to being able to listen to my phone playing MP3s all day, without the battery on the phone dying. It was a Mr. Gasket #42S and it seems pretty universal. I don't know if it would fit your bike. Needed finagling to fit mine. But now I can get one at almost any auto parts store if the need arises. I needed a couple fittings, like a right angle and a fuel line splice, plus 4 hose clamps. I also had to drill a hole to mount it. You see, the stock fuel pump had the in and out on the same end, but the Mr. Gasket 42S had the in on one end, and the out on the other. If it were me, I'd install it and make sure it runs, then put it in the saddle bag for a future day. Then you'll have done the thinking in comfort, instead of along the road. Dave -

It sounds like fun to me. My local brewery has a history of using the recipes from large batch home brewers for their "Divine Reserve" special releases. This week, the winner of a home brewing contest was selected to provide the next recipe for... a barley wine. I make limoncello at home. Why not beer? What is the typical cash outlay to get started? I ended up buying the after-market fuel pump, commonly available at any auto parts store. I couldn't find one part (a 45 degree angle fitting), so I used more fuel line to allow a gentle bend. Long story short, the new fuel pump works and Roxie runs great. There was some concern about the pump being insufficient under load, so I hit the rev limiter on 4 gears. Weirdly, I tested the old fuel pump and it seems to work. I mean I hooked it directly to the battery, and it ran and ran. Odd. I also learned that there is some sort of shut off on the fuel pump. When you turn the ignition, it runs for five seconds or so, then shuts off until you start the engine. It's true whether or not the pump is supplying fuel. (I ran it unconnected to the engine) Thanks all, especially to Ponch. He sent me his ideas, and was available for phone a friend. Then, he called to check in on me. Much appreciated. Dave -

After opening up the side and seeing where the relative parts are, it clearly wasn't the wiring. I thought that maybe it reached down because of that wire tester I've left on top. Ponch has sent me photos and instructions, but I'm not sure if it is for a fuel pump or if he maybe sent me his plans to cap the Gulf Oil Spill. Dave
