When parking on a level surface, or close to a level surface, the second to the last thing I do is move the tranny to neutral. That way, I am a 1/2 mile down the road and everyone else is playing catch-up. -
Shindengen Regulator/Rectifier

Aren't you concerned with it overheating in the location you mounted it? I have always thought that since excess voltage is grounded through the mounting, it tends to heat up, thus the cooling fins. Inside your fairing has very, very little moving air, probable none at all. Just my 2 cents. -
ARMY???? Ain't no Gunnery Sergeants in the Army. All GySgts are Jarheads. Yeah, I do remember "procuring" doggie stuff in the Nam. Dog faces always have more than they need anyway.

Hey, it's Gunnery Sergeant there Chief

I have the same 35W bulbs in the driving lights I've installed on an 86 and don't have the problem you are discussing. I also have them wired the same. Not sure where and what kind of switch you used; perhaps that's your problem. Do any of the wires feel unusually warm if just idling in place? Check the battery voltage with a good voltmeter at different rpms with the dl's on and off. Post the readings here to see what other folks my have to say about those readings. Just some ideas. Good luck.

Hey bud, don't let the remarks of some on here about owning a Harley get you down. Everyone has different taste in things; women, cars, houses, scooters, etc. I think your taste in bikes is pretty close to mine. And by what I mean by that is we have got to have atleast one bike that sounds like it has a real motor on it, not just a tinny sounding thingy. Let em all talk and like I've said before, I'm sure a lot more folks would own HD's if only they were more affordable. Can't be the mechanical problems; too many seeking advise on correcting broken down 2D Gens on here. First Gens? After all they are all well over 17 years old now. But I love them just as much. If ever up around the DFW area, you had best give me a shout you're here. If so, be sure to wear all your ridin armor.

All bugs are gone!
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Rick, After not running it for so long, I would be afraid the carbs need more that just synced; maybe gummed up some. Have you tried running some sort of carb cleaner through it; Sea Foam maybe? Anyway, I have lots of s... to get down around here this weekend but if I do head up towards McKinney, I'll surely give you a call and I'll bring my Carbtune with me. Herb -

Didn't know your's wasn't running. What's the deal? "get mine running too!" Plenty of beer in the fridge. -
The new motor in my lowly lst Edition 86 is totally complete; and all the bugs have been worked out. This is one heck of a strong runner. I am again ridin around looking for a challenge. That eliminates all Harleys and all 2d Editions. I still miss my 88 though. And I most likely won't be ridin my Harley Ultra for a while. Besides she likes just sittin in the garage covered up waiting; just waiting.

Need a lst Gen Part HELP
MasterGuns replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Mike (aka Snaggletooth) is sending me his old one. I know I should do the upgrade but all my fuze holders are in really good shape and don't really need the upgrade. Besides I am fairly tired of working on this thing. I'd rather ride it for the next few months and save "upgrades" for the next non-riding season. Thanks again. Did I say I'm tired of working on this bike and/or having someone else work on this bike. I know, get a 2d Gen. H&*% NO! -
While test riding my 86 VR just after getting the new motor completely installed and all the bugs worked out, I was riding it without any of the plastic body parts, except the bags and the upper fairing, and the fuze box cover went a different direction than the rest of the bike. Didn't notice it was gone until I arrived back to my place. Just checked out Fleabay and nada. I don't believe one can buy this part separately from anyone. Soooo, does anyone on here have a fuze box cover they won't mind parting with. Just let me know and how much you will need for the item.

I'd consider myself lucky, could had been a LA Harley.

Got my 86 back from the shop today with a new-to-her motor, an 89 that incidently is in perfect condition. All four cylinders test to stock compression and better yet, this is one heck of a quiet running motor. Got her home and assembled all the other stuff and took it on a good long ride. Whoa, I am impressed; runs like new, smooth, lots of power, and clean. Love it. I've heard these motors are bullet proof. Well they aren't. The original motor developed either a piston slap or a wrist pin knock and rather that fix a motor that had well over 100k, even though the PO said 24K, I picked up this one from hessforless. I replaced a motor in an 83 by myself about 3 years back and I'll never take that on again. Anyway, I just wanted to share this great experience with all. Now I again have two great running, great looking sleds in the garage.

Easiest way to REMEDY an Oil overfill
MasterGuns replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You can be quickest in the west loosening the drain plug and then trying to get it back in but you are still going to have a mess. When I purchased my "other bike"; don't want to start a war here, it was quite a bit overfilled. Here's how I lowered the level without pulling the drain plug. I had a length of small id hose maybe 3/8 id. I simply opened the fill plug, lowered the hose down into the oil, placed a recovery can right next to the right side of the motor, and sucked the hose full almost to where it entered my mouth. Be careful here but oil doesn't taste that bad anyway. Once the hose was full or almost full, I placed the other end of the hose in the can and with my breath, forced the hose to drain out. I did that a few times and lowered the oil level in my ????? to an appropriate level. Worked for me. -
Hey, what kind of oil should I be using?

I don't remember all the details but if my memory is working, had something to do with the Harley Davidson "failed" Nova Program. Way back in the last 70s, HD started development of a water cooled V-4 of varying sizes. After successfully developing several sized V-4 and even a V-6, they figured they'd loose too much of their loyal base and elected to not mass produce. I also seem to remember that this technology was sold to Yamaha and a short 2 years later, whala, the 1983 Venture 1200 V-4. I could care less of this is true, perhaps someone should do so research.

That's because of the risk of theft. The greater the risk the higher the insurance cost. Now really analyse what I just wrote.

I know exactly. Thirty year Jarhead. Glad I'm retired now and no longer dealing with billeting the troops.
