  1. First let me say thanks for all the well wishes and there are a lot of good people living around that area. Just about everyone that passed offered help. Second, you are right about a recipe for disaster. Most of the folks, after offering help, told us to get way off the road because about 2-3 accidents a week happen at that turn. You could see a lot of evidence where vehicles didn't make the turn and ran off the road.
  2. We had a large group out of Slidell Louisiana heading up to Natchez MS Saturday to ride part of the trace. Right outside of Columbia MS in a hard right hand turn across some RR tracks the rear got a little squirrly. I had my choice of hitting a RR crossing sign, a culvert or a patch of wet dirt. Went for the dirt and the bike laid down and immediately came to a stop, unfortunately the wife didn't and came over my back. I hit the edge of the road pretty hard and the wife didn't hit hard but twisted her already chronic back. We're ok, a lot of bruises, but I can surely testify to the advantage of leather and helmets. My jacket tore in half and the right side of my helmet is flat from scraping the concrete road. Witnesses said that we were moving about 10mph when all of this happened !! The adjuster is coming out tomorrow and basically the entire right side of the bike needs attention. I may be in the market for parts. After seeing the damage to the leather and helmet, I can only imagine how bad it could have been if we were not wearing the proper riding gear.
  3. 28 years of shift work. Started out on 21 day turn 8 hour shift and for the past 15 years been working 12 hour shift 6 to 6 with EOWO (every other weekend off). The amount of overtime we work usually works out to be 60 hour weeks. Don't think I could ever go to a day job.
  4. Work....we have over 20 riders and 10 assigned motorcycle spots. Luckily most work 12 hour swing shift but we have run out of spots and had to take up cage spots.
  5. Born and raised in New Orleans and I can attest to the fact that there are no worse drivers anywhere. If you come this way remember a few basic rules of the road. 1) Green= go Yellow= go fast Red= go really fast 2) One way streets do not exist because you are only going one way anyway 3) When turning at a neutral ground intersection "median for non nawlins folks" it is legal to drive against oncoming traffic as long as your destination is within one block. 4) Stop signs=what are they?? 5) The only signal you need to use is the middle fingure after any of the above.
  6. For 2nd Gen Rivco makes a bolt on center stand. Here is there web address, http://www.rivcoproducts.com/ .
  7. I did exactly what you are talking about to my 2002 about three years ago. I really don't like the look of the large driving lights and picked up a set of 55-watt at Wallyworld for less than 20 bucks. I didn't use the switch that came with them but installed an illuminated switch behind the fairing and used the existing bracket and screw on the wind deflectors to mount. Really easy install and lights me up big time. Three years and knock wood, I have had no electrical issues
  8. Took mine off with waxed dental floss....worked great, no heat required
  9. The door on the cassette deck popped open and now won't stay closed. Short of using duct tape to keep it closed, can anyone tell me how it latches and what I can check?
  10. Topped out the stock speedometer a number of times by myself. 2 up once, it took a little longer to get there but still topped out. No wobble or shake..actually very smooth.
  11. Is there a gasket that goes on the exhaust for stock mufflers? I wanted to put the stock mufflers back on this weekend just for a change and can't remember. I checked the manual and the diagram doesn't show one. If there is i must have lost them when I swapped the last time.
  12. Thanks for all the tips. I had time this morning to take a good look at it. The arm is not bent and goes full travel but the trunk opens just a little past half way. I unhooked the arm and it opens fully now. TFor whatever reason the arm is just to short.
  13. Maybe my original post was not very clear? sorry I love the bike. Very proud to have it stand out in the crowd because we Venture riders are the exception and not the rule and like it when folks ask what kind of bike is it. I was just curious as to the wherabouts of some other Venture brothers and sisters in the area. I actually have fun dogging my HD riding padna's telling them the reason we have windshields, fairings and cowlings is to block the parts falling off of Harley's as we pass them on the road.
  14. Thanks Squid.... I removed the bib first and liked the look so I took off the emblems and now the tank is screaming for some custom paint. Sketching out some ideas now, with such a big canvas to work with it should come out nice. When I finally get it done I'll post some pics.
  15. It must be something about the area or maybe it's the dealerships but I have only seen a handful of Ventures locally (Slidell, Louisiana) in the past four years that I have owned mine. A local restaurant has a bike night every wednesday (hundreds of bikes everyweek) with food, beer booths and music, vendors set up shop and sometimes riding exhibitions from the Sheriff's dept and over 95% of the bikes are Harleys? My bike ends up being the odd ball. I took the tank emblems off so people always ask me "what kind of bike is that?" We need more Venture riders !!!!!
  16. I have a 2002 and the trunk only opens wide enough to squeeze the helmet in. I checked the bar on the left hand side to see if it was bent but it is traveling all the way to the end. Is this normal for the trunks or can I do something to make it open more?
  17. Just let me know if ya'll ever head down this way. After a day of riding in 100* with 100% humidity a dip in the pool, a soak in the hot tub and a few foamers at the bar usually puts us in a very good mood.
  18. Very nice....I just recently finished up on my little paradise. It's a good place to spend Sunday afternoons hollering at the Saints game on TV.
  19. Here's a link to Texas motorcycle laws...you can change the state http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/laws/result.asp?state=TX I can't wait to be able to ride my grandson but here in Louisana the passenger has to be 5 or older.
  20. Helmet laws or mandatory seat belt laws both designed to protect I have a good friend who was involved in an accident with a bike rider who wasn't wearing a helmet. It was a low speed collision, the biker was at fault and hit his head hard enough to cause a brain hemorrhage and he passed away. My friend has never gotten over this and has since lived with "guilt" constantly thinking there was something he may have been able to do different, leaving the house one minute earlier or later etc. I went through a windshield at 18 not wearing a seat belt and it was no fun. (wear it all the time now) I also had to lay down a bike in the rain when someone ran a stop sign and the helmet definetly saved me from serious injury. It should be a personal choice but just wanted to share how it can affect others as well.
  21. thanks for all the info.....i'm really happy now that i know how bad i go stuck!! Unfortunately I don't have much of an option for service. The prices i originally posted were from the closest place that actually turns out to be the best for price and service. (go figure) The next closest is a beautiful dealership with very friendly people but the first time I brought the scoot for a front tire change they scratched the fairing in 2 places and after much debate i ended up buffing them out myself. They said it came in the shop that way and I couldn't prove otherwise so they are not even a consideration. Neither of the 2 will mount tires unless they sell them to you and the local Harley shop laughs when you ask about tires. Guess i'm just stuck......
  22. Like previous posts here. Both times i had wobble was at the end of the tire life trying to squeeze out every mile.
  23. There are only three places close enough to bring the scoot for any type of work. I needed a back tire and got a Bridgestone last weekend. $195 for tire $150 for labor (they all charge $100 and hour) $30 for tax $380.00 for one tire Just wondering what everyone else was paying
  24. It's true that there are cooler temperatures and better rides all around the country but as Squidley so eloquently put it : "Personally it really doesn't matter to me, curvy roads are nice, but the rally should be about the comeraderie of the group. Most folks will travel a few thousand miles to attend a rally so burning up the miles isn't an issue. From a personal standpoint, I would like to see a lot more BSing and getting to know folks as opposed to pounding out the miles on the bikes." The ride from most folks home to whatever the final destination is will bring us through some of the most scenic rides in the US. There are many group activities that can be had down south outside of riding and the city is designed to accomodate and entertain large groups. This is a great site....with good people....it'll be nice to put some faces to names where ever we end up!!!
  25. http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/laws/result.asp?state=LA Here's a link to motorcycle laws and you can filter by state.
