  1. Was the radio noise you experienced in all modes, AM, FM, CB, AUX? I always listen to music via my ZUMO and XM adapter. Would the noise affect that through the AUX input? Dennis

I use 1and1.com. The cost us $6.50/month for unlimited bandwidth. Dennis
  3. I'm goitn to rewire the auxiliary lighting on the back of my bike. Currently I have an extra tail/brake light and trailer lighting which is run through an isolation relay set. All of the taps were made using the scotch-lok type connectors (I know they are junk) and it really looks like a mess under the seat. Some of the connections were made by the installer that wired up my trailer lights and some by me. I want to solder all of the taps to the bike's lighting circuits and then run a line to a power strip where I connect the auxillary lighting. What is the best type of power strip to use? So far the only thing I've found looks like the attached photo. Is there something better? Photos of you installation would be helpful. This looks like it may be a cold Saturday job. Thanks, Dennis
  4. We'll be centered in Lexington with rides Saturday and Sunday. Dennis
  5. Valerie and I will be hosting the Memorial weekend Central KY tour again this year. May 27 - 30. Dennis
  6. Thanks for all of the feedback. I'll check into the AT&T service and the over-the-air antenna idea. Dennis
  7. I could keep the cable for telephone and internet. However, I would probably switch to Windstream for phone and DSL internet. I've tried the DSL at relatives houses and it seems OK. Dennis
  8. I've had cable TV service for years and have no experiece at all with satellite systems. Our cable provider, Insight Communications, is switching to a digital system and in doing so it will require a tuner on each TV. No problem I thought. I already had 2 DVR units and they were going to give me 3 mini box tuners for 3 other TVs which left me with needing one more. However, all of my TVs are HD TVs and the mini box tuners do not support HD, only SD. So I called Insight today and was basically told that the only way I could get HD would be to have an HD DVR on each TV for an additional $15/month per TV. I really only need the basic 4 major networks on the 4 additional TVs and today I can get that off of the standard cable using the TV tuners. So, if I want to use my HD TVs to their potential it appears I may have to switch to Direct TV or Dish. To those of you with satellite experience, can you share the pros and cons of the two systems? It seems I'll still need a tuner for each TV but they are only $5/each per month. I would also have to switch my phone and internet to the local phone company. I find all of this really annoying. Dennis
  9. You really can't prejudge people. I had an experience last night. I am on a comittee searching for a new accountant for our organization and we interviewed the last of 3 accountants last night. Prior to the meeting I had already decided that this lady was not going to be the one. In our phone conversations I had decided that she was going to be very difficult to work with. I had her pictured as a frumpy bean late middle aged bean counter and expected that she would show up with her gray hair in a bun and lookng rather grandmotherly. I had talked to the other comittee members and had them convinced as well. To my surprise a very professional looking attractive 40 year old blonde shows up. She was very well prepared, very stylishly dressed with perfect hair and makeup. What I took as a very difficult person to work with turned out be a very confident and effiecient professional. She was very easy to talk to and responded confidently to our questions. We were impressed and in our discussions after she left it was clear she was the front runner. In addition, in our conversation after the business discussion we learned that she rides a Harley with her husband and she attends the Daytona bike week every year. I won't hold that against her. You really can't prejudge people or go on first impressions. Dennis
  10. I don't know the cause of the damage to yours but I plan to have mine (2007 blue/black) replaced under warranty. Mine has a horizontal crack near the center mounting bolt. My 2004 midnight had a crack appear in the same place and neither one had been hit in that area. The '04 was replaced under warranty and I expect the same with the '07. I believe I have read here that others have had the same crack in that area. Dennis
  11. I figured my response would a raise and eyebrow or two. Those that know me know that I ride. We take at least one 4000 to 5000 mile trip each summer and a few weekends thrown in along the way. However, as a payback for going on my touring trips my wife gets her beach vacation in the fall and she takes far too much stuff to take the bike. So we compromise and I trailer it to Florida. While she's on the beach I putz around on the bike and then we take evening rides. It's a compromise that works for us. Here's link to a few photos from this summer's ride: http://www.traynorphoto.com/2010biketrip Dennis
  12. Mine will be on a trailer headed down I75 to Ft. Myers Friday. Better on the trailer and with me than leave it at home. Dennis
  13. Yep, I had that happen on the first day of a 2 week trip a couple of years ago. Pulled off an exit ramp and couldn't find the shifter. Just like you, looked down and it was on the floor board. Put it back on and made it into a gas station where I zip tied it on until I made it to a NAPA store and bought a bolt and locktite. Dennis
  14. I'm going to be in the market soon for a water heater as well. Mine will be a natural gas unit. I've pretty much ruled out the tankless type. With tankless you have there is a few seconds of cold water sandwiched between the hot when people shower back to back. That's a showstopper in our house. I'm also considering the "condensing" water heaters but due to the higher cost I'm not sure you can get a decent return on investment with it. That will probably lead me back to a 75 gallon tank type. Dennis
  15. I'll add my story from yesterday. On my way home from work I was in the far right lane of 3 through lanes at an intersection. The two left lanes were starting to move slowly as they proceeded from the light on green. The right lane was clear so I was proceeding at about 40 mph. Just as I crossed the white line at the intersection a car turned right from the side street. I didn't have time to anticipate him because he didn't pull up and stop and then turn on red. He just ran the light. So, what to do? It's amazing how much data you process in a couple of seconds. I was left of center in my lane. I slammed the brakes to the point of locking the rear and kept moving left looking for room. I was concerned about the traffic in the adjacent lane and was hopeful someone would see me coming over and give me room. I ended up on the dividing line with my front tire next to the driver's door of the van. Forturnately there was space in the adjacent lane between cars and the guy that pulled out stayed to the center of his lane. That was my closest call short of actually crashing. During all of this I'm thinking how I was about to ruin my weekend ride that I had planned. Afterwards I pulled along side the guy to have a discussion and he wouldn't even look at me. I've relplayed that incident in my mind a few times and I really don't know what I would have done differently. I do know that had it happened a few years ago the outcome wouldn't have been the same. Experience pays off. Dennis
  16. Surprised this thread resurfaced. I painted it about 18 months ago. I have mixed feelings about the trailer. The positives: It's small and my wife can't pack 500 lbs to push me down the road. It fits through hotel room doors so I can roll it into the room at night. It's light weight empty and loaded so it doesn't hurt the braking and acceleration too much. The negatives: Too much tounge weight to suit me, about 1/3rd of the total trailer weight, 40 to 50 lbs when loaded. You have to balance the weight of the trailer along with the bike and passenger and it can get a little tricky in parking lots and around gas pumps. Costs you a lot of time at stops from all of the other riders wanting to come over and check it out. Way too expensive for what it is. Dennis
  17. You can back it up with slight inputs. If you turn to sharp the universal locks and the trailer tire just scoots on the pavement. Sometimes when I'm getting ready to mount the bike and I know I have to back a particular direction I just pick the trailer up and move it in the direction I need to back. Dennis
  18. I'm using it now to reply. For me it us a much faster tool to use on the iPhone for reading the forum. It doesn't offer all of the tools that the web site offers but it is fine for reading and replying to posts. It's formatted better for small screen. Much quicker to navigate through posts when your using 3G access. Dennis
  19. If you have a favorite helmet call the folks at Sierra Electronics see if they can install a system in it for you. I had used J&M clamp on microphone systems for years and when I bought a new full face helmet I wanted to get rid of the clamp and make it a more clean installation. I called Sierra and ended up riding to their shop and had a J&M speaker and microphone installed while I waited. You can also ship the helmet to them. The installation looks like it was done at the factory and no more wires hanging around the clamp. Overby's Two Wheel sound provides a similar service. http://www.sierra-mc.com/ http://www.twowheelsound.com/ Dennis
  20. Get a Whelen strip-lite. They are far brighter than any other light stop I've seen. If you search fir recent posts by me I recently posted some photos of my rear lighting setup. I believe A4pumper recently installed one also. Here is a link to the thread with a photo: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=53076 Dennis
  21. My wife and I both have Iphones, I have a 4 and she has a 3G. Both have been great. The ATT service has been fine for me. I've used them for 10 years or more with no problems. I have a couple of friends that have the Sprint EVO phone which is Android based. I've played with it a bit and I find the Iphone user interface easier to navigate. The EVO is probably a good phone and you could get used to the interface but for me Sprint lacks the coverage area. The EVO is a huge phone. Much bigger than the Iphone. I'm not an Apple fan but I do like their phone. Dennis
  22. Looks good. I've been using the Accufuel app. http://www.appigo.com/accufuel And then I use a the Iphones notepad to keep track of everything else. Dennis
  23. I was browsing through the Custom Dynamics web site a few days ago and found these little LED license plate bolts. http://www.customdynamics.com/illuminatorz_licence_plates.htm#LED_Tag_Bolts I thought they were kind of clever so I ordered a set and just installed them tonight. I decided to mount them to either side of the plate on their own bracket. Otherwise they would have to be disconnected in order to remove the plate. I wired them as brake lights and they add a little twinkle to the lower corners of the plate. Here's a photo. Dennis
  24. Consider them yours for free. Dennis
  25. Stock size, 150 Dunlop E3. A few years ago I tried a 130 Avon on the front of my '04 venture and I didn't like it either. It did improve slow speed handling but I didn't like the way it felt at highway speeds going over irregular surfaces. As Mike mentioned the links may just provide a quicker steering response and I just didn't take the time to get used to it. I put the stock links back on yesterday and we took a ride through the curves near my house and it felt right. Dennis
